Elon Musk Announces Successful Neuralink Implant in First Human

In a groundbreaking development, Elon Musk has revealed that the first human has received a Neuralink implant, marking a significant milestone in the company’s mission to integrate technology with the human brain. Musk shared the news on X, stating that the recipient is recovering well, and early results indicate promising neuron spike detection.

Neuralink, a company founded by Musk, aims to revolutionize the relationship between humans and technology by enabling individuals to control devices with their thoughts. The long-term vision extends beyond mere control; Neuralink aspires to restore critical functions such as vision, motor skills, and speech, ultimately reshaping the human experience.

The inaugural product from Neuralink, named “Telepathy,” empowers users to control their phones, computers, and a variety of devices through thought alone. Musk emphasized that the initial beneficiaries of this technology will be individuals who have lost the use of their limbs. He painted a visionary picture, invoking the image of renowned physicist Stephen Hawking communicating at speeds surpassing those of a skilled typist or auctioneer.

Neuralink’s approach involves a fully-implantable, wireless brain-computer interface (BCI) that is part of the PRIME Study. This groundbreaking investigational medical device trial leverages a surgical robot to implant the technology in participants’ brains. The study aims to assess the safety of the implant and surgical robot, as well as evaluate the initial functionality of the BCI in enabling individuals with quadriplegia to control external devices through their thoughts.

Elon Musk’s vision for Neuralink extends beyond immediate applications. Last year, he expressed the company’s long-term goal of contributing to AI risk reduction, envisioning improved human-to-AI and human-to-human bandwidth by several orders of magnitude.

The successful implantation in the first human represents a major leap forward in the convergence of technology and neuroscience.

Six Million Dollar Man One Step Closer to Reality With Giant Leap in Mind Control of Computers

The science fiction behind the Six Million Dollar Man took a step closer to science reality yesterday when researchers announced a breakthrough in thought control of computers.

Researchers from Stanford University in California have developed an algorithm that translates the neurological signals for movement with greater than ever speed and accuracy. The system, which relies on a silicon chip implanted in the brain, has been used to allow monkeys to control computer cursors – but could one day control prosthetic limbs.

‘These findings could lead to greatly improved prosthetic system performance and robustness in paralysed people,’ said Krishna Shenoy, who led the team that carried out the research.

When a paralysed person imagines moving a limb, cells in the part of the brain that controls movement still activate as if trying to make the immobile limb work again, the researchers explain. Even where a neurological injury or disease has severed the pathway between brain and muscle, the region where the signals originate often remains intact and functional…

Previous research into the field of neural prosthetics has begun to develop brain-implantable sensors able to measure signals from individual neurons, interpret them, and use them to control computer cursors using thoughts alone. But the new algorithm developed at Stanford, known as ReFIT, vastly improves the speed and accuracy of the control, the researchers reported on the November 18 issue of the Journal Nature Neuroscience.

Chilling Brain Scans Show Impact of Mother’s Love on Child’s Brain Size

A shocking comparison of brain scans from two three-year-old children reveals new evidence of the remarkable impact a mother’s love has on a child’s brain development.

The chilling images reveal that the left brain, which belongs to a normal 3-year-old, is significantly larger and contains fewer spots and dark “fuzzy” areas than the right brain, which belongs to that of a 3-year-old who has suffered extreme neglect.

Neurologists say that the latest images provide more evidence that the way children are treated in their early years is important not only for the child’s emotional development, but also in determining the size of their brains.

Experts say that the sizeable difference in the two brains is primarily caused by the difference in the way each child was treated by their mothers.

While at first glance, the images might indicate that the child with the right brain might have suffered a serious accident or illness, neurologists said that the truth is that the child with the shrunken brain was neglected and abused by its mother, and the child with the larger and more fully developed brain was raised in a loving, supportive home and was looked after by its mother, according to The Sunday Telegraph.

Colorado Gun Club Owner Rejected Aurora Shooter’s Membership Application Last Month

Shooting suspect James Holmes applied to join a Colorado gun range last month but never became a member because of his behavior and a “bizarre” message on his voice mail greeting, the range’s owner said Sunday.

Police said James Holmes began buying guns at Denver-area stores nearly two months before Friday’s shooting. He also received at least 50 packages in four months at his home and the University of Colorado that authorities are investigating to see whether they contained materials for the potentially deadly booby traps that police found in his apartment.

At the same time, the quiet 24-year-old was in the final weeks of the first year of a rigorous Ph.D. neuroscience program, where he took a three-part final exam required for students to progress in the program and was scheduled to give a presentation on MicroRNA Biomarkers before abruptly leaving in June.

Holmes is being held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder after a shooting rampage minutes into a premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora early Friday that left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

He is scheduled for an initial hearing Monday and has been assigned a public defender.
