Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth: Nuclear Weapons for Ukraine Is up to President Donald Trump

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News said he is not ruling out nuclear weapons for Ukraine, and that ultimately it is up to President Donald Trump.

“I’m not here to declare anything on or off the table. That’s not my job. That’s the president’s job. He’s the leader, he’s the master negotiator and dealmaker,” he said.

He added, “Some of us are out there to help set certain types of conditions that could make a deal more likely and that’s what I’ve tried to do here in the context of NATO.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week Ukraine should be given NATO membership or nuclear weapons as a security guarantee against a future Russian invasion as part of a peace deal.

But Hegseth on Wednesday outlined some U.S. positions ahead of negotiations, including that Ukraine should not be offered NATO membership. (Read more from “Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth: Nuclear Weapons for Ukraine Is up to President Donald Trump” HERE)

U.S. Rejects Chinese No-First-Use Nuke Plan

A Chinese proposal submitted to the United Nations last month calling on all nations to adopt Beijing’s questionable “no first use” nuclear weapons policy is a nonstarter for the United States.

A State Department official told Inside the Ring that the no-first-use policy would be unacceptable given China’s massive nuclear weapons buildup and its refusal to join U.S. arms talks.

“The PRC’s rapid and opaque buildup of a more flexible nuclear arsenal calls into question the objectives behind its no-first-use proposal,” the official said, speaking on background and using the abbreviation for People’s Republic of China. “[China’s] refusal to engage in meaningful bilateral or multilateral discussions on arms control and risk reduction, including on questions about the PRC’s stated no-first-use policy, reinforces these concerns.”

The proposal was introduced in a U.N. preparatory meeting in Geneva from July 22 to Aug. 2 in advance of a major 2026 review conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

In a working paper by the Chinese government, President Xi Jinping describes nuclear arms as a “sword of Damocles” threatening humanity. All nuclear weapons should be “completely banned” in pursuit of a nuclear-free world, he said. (Read more from “U.S. Rejects Chinese No-First-Use Nuke Plan” HERE)

Ukraine Recklessly Detonates Drone Against Reactor Dome at Russian-Occupied Nuclear Power Plant

Ukrainian forces detonated a drone against the dome covering a shut-down nuclear reactor at the massive Russian-occupied power plant in southeast Ukraine on Sunday, according to Kremlin and international energy officials.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said the unmanned device exploded against the dome above one of six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is the largest in all of Europe.

The damage was reported by the Russian-installed administration, which was placed on site after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Russian staff claimed there was no serious damage to the reactor, with radiation levels remaining normal.

The Russian-run plant said the Ukrainian strike “attacked the dome” of the building housing Reactor No. 6, which is currently in cold shutdown along with three other reactors. (Read more from “Ukraine Recklessly Detonates Drone Against Reactor Dome at Russian-Occupied Nuclear Power Plant” HERE)

Report: U.S. To Deploy Nuclear Weapons in the U.K. Amid Escalating Russian Threats

In a move signaling heightened concerns over the increasing threat of Russian aggression in Europe, the United States is reportedly planning to relocate nuclear weapons to the United Kingdom for the first time in nearly two decades. Sensitive Pentagon documents obtained by The Telegraph reveal that the U.S. has procurement contracts for a new facility at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, confirming the intention to station nuclear warheads three times the strength of the Hiroshima bomb at the air base.

RAF Lakenheath, which hosted U.S. nuclear weapons during the Cold War, is now set to house B61-12 nuclear gravity bombs—weapons more than three times as powerful as the one dropped on Hiroshima. These compact bombs are deployable by various aircraft, including F-16s, F-15s, and F-35s.

The threat posed by Russia has become so severe that Admiral Rob Bauer, Chairman of the Military Committee of NATO, recently cautioned Europeans to be mentally prepared for a potential major war against Russia within the next two decades.

The Pentagon has not officially commented on the relocation, but reports indicate the existence of a new “surety dormitory” intended for the base. This dormitory, disclosed in budget documents last year, would enable the U.S. to store tactical nuclear weapons deployable by F-35 fighter jets. The term “surety” underscores the Pentagon’s commitment to maintaining the safety of nuclear weapons when not in use.

The U.S. Department of Defense has also ordered additional equipment for the base, including ballistic shields designed to protect military personnel from potential attacks on high-value assets.

Russia has responded to these developments with a stern warning, asserting that if the U.S. proceeds with moving nuclear weapons to the U.K., it would be viewed as an escalation. Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, emphasized that such actions would hinder efforts to address the urgent issue of removing all nuclear weapons from European countries. She suggested that Russia might consider taking countermeasures to protect its security interests and those of its allies.

U.S. Announces New Nuclear Bomb for Arsenal

The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) announced a new modernized nuclear bomb that will increase the military’s readiness to deter aggression and launch strategic attacks if needed.

The new bomb, designated the B61-13, will be a modernized version of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb and will be deliverable by modern aircraft to the target.

“Today’s announcement is reflective of a changing security environment and growing threats from potential adversaries,” said Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb. “The United States has a responsibility to continue to assess and field the capabilities we need to credibly deter and, if necessary, respond to strategic attacks, and assure our allies.”

“The B61-13 represents a reasonable step to manage the challenges of a highly dynamic security environment,” said Plumb. “While it provides us with additional flexibility, production of the B61-13 will not increase the overall number of weapons in our nuclear stockpile.” (Read more from “U.S. Announces New Nuclear Bomb for Arsenal” HERE)

‘Tickling the Dragon’s Tale’: U.S. To Prepare for Underground Testing of Nuclear Weapons Without Any Explosions

The scientists in charge of making sure nuclear weapons in the U.S. stockpile are still functioning are set to start moving key components to the desert in Nevada in November to prepare for underground testing.

Those at national defense laboratories have not been able to confirm the effectiveness and reliability of nuclear warheads since 1992, when an underground test ban was instituted. However, the Associated Press reported that Energy Department officials announced on Thursday that they have figured out the next best thing, which has been referred to as “tickling the dragon’s tale.”

The $1.8 billion Scorpius project could move beyond the theoretical computing model to research, in detail, what goes into a nuclear implosion without carrying out a nuclear explosion. The report noted that this strategy could be put in place as early as 2027, according to Jon Custer, head of the Sandia project.

Custer noted that the reason why this strategy is referred to as “tickling the dragon’s tail” is because the experiment approaches but remains below the phase at which nuclear materials ignite a series of chain reactions, according to the report. The question scientists are trying to answer is whether U.S. nuclear weapons are still operative. ‘We’re Not Even Raising the Bar’: House Intel Chair Says U.S. Isn’t Keeping Pace With China’s Buildup of Nuclear Weapons

Republican Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio said Wednesday that the Biden administration wasn’t “even raising the bar” to address China’s nuclear weapons buildup.

“On the left, their philosophy has been, ‘we don’t want missile defense because if we do it will make others want to build more nuclear weapons,’” Turner, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow, a former Trump administration official. “Unfortunately, we have not done missile defense and that is exactly what others did anyway, they built more nuclear weapons.”

“Not only was North Korea not nuclear at the time when Reagan called us to the challenge, and Iran certainly didn’t have a nuclear weapons program, but China is tripling its nuclear weapons pointed at the United States and we’re not even raising the bar as to what our missile defense capabilities are,” Turner continued.

China has been expanding its nuclear capabilities, including an effort to increase its force of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the Wall Street Journal reported in April 2022. The buildup includes silos for 100 DF-41 ICBMs, each of which can carry up to ten warheads and hit targets up to 15,000 kilometers away, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Blame Hillary and Obama: Tons of Uranium Concentrate Missing From Libya

Some 2.5 tons of natural uranium stored in a site in war-torn Libya have gone missing, the United Nations nuclear watchdog said Thursday, raising safety and proliferation concerns.

Natural uranium can’t immediately be used for energy production or bomb fuel, as the enrichment process typically requires the metal to be converted into a gas, then later spun in centrifuges to reach the levels needed. However, each ton of natural uranium — if obtained by a group with the technological means and resources — can be refined to 5.6 kilograms of weapons-grade material over time, experts say. That makes finding the missing metal important for nonproliferation experts.

In a statement, the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency said its director-general, Rafael Mariano Grossi, informed member states Wednesday about the missing uranium. . .

Tuesday, “agency safeguards inspectors found that 10 drums containing approximately 2.5 tons of natural uranium in the form of uranium ore concentrate were not present as previously declared at a location in the state of Libya,” the IAEA said. . .

While inspectors removed the last of the enriched uranium from Libya in 2009, the yellowcake remained behind, with the U.N. in 2013 estimating some 6,400 barrels of it were stored at Sabha. American officials had worried Iran could try to purchase the uranium from Libya, something Qadhafi’s top civilian nuclear official tried to reassure the U.S. about, according to a 2009 diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks. WWIII Watch: Putin Suspends Nuke Treaty (VIDEO)

Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced in a nearly two-hour speech on Tuesday the unilateral suspension of the longstanding New START agreement that limits American and Russian nuclear development, describing Western support for Ukraine amid an ongoing Russian invasion as an existential threat to Russia.

Putin also took the time to reiterate his claim that the administration of current Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was “neo-Nazi” in its ideology and to denounce “perversion” and “spiritual catastrophe” in the West, spending particular time condemning the Anglican Church for allegedly considering “the idea of a gender-neutral God.” . . .

Putin used his speech to announce an end to the New START agreement, a treaty passed under Obama.

“I am forced to announce today that Russia is suspending its participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty,” he declared, accusing the United States and the greater West of attempting to eliminate the existence of Russia as a whole. . .

“The Western elite does not conceal their goal, which is to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. It means to finish us forever and grow a local conflict into global opposition,” Putin warned. “This is exactly how we understand it all and we will react accordingly, because in this case we are talking about the existence of our country.” (Read more from “WWIII Watch: Putin Suspends Nuke Treaty (VIDEO)” HERE)
