House Republicans Rip OBGYN Group’s ‘Outrageous’ Decision to Cancel Pro-Life Doctors

House Republicans decried the nation’s leading obstetrician-gynecologist association for canceling a presentation by pro-life doctors at a recent conference, calling the move “hypocritical and outrageous.”

The five lawmakers led by Rep. Chris Smith, New Jersey Republican, called on the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to “end its discrimination against pro-life doctors” after their planned conference exhibit was pulled at the last minute.

“The reported decision by ACOG — an organization purporting to represent all obstetrician–gynecologists — to exclude qualified health care professionals of maternal and child care from presenting at an annual conference because of their pro-life positions is hypocritical and outrageous,” said the Republicans in a Friday statement.

The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists said it has booked a booth for the last 15 years at the 2023 CREOG & APGO annual meeting, but that its doctors were told last week after arriving in Maryland for the event that their exhibit was canceled.

The conference for medical educators is run by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology, which falls under the ACOG umbrella. Med School Weighed Residents’ Commitment to ‘Anti-Racist Practices’ in Admissions Process

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine considered OBGYN residency applicants’ contributions to anti-racism and diversity during the interviewing process, according to a rubric obtained by Do No Harm, a group that focuses on ending anti-racism in health care.

Interviewers for the University of New Mexico School of Medicine awarded OBGYN residence applicants points based on their “experience and interest” in “equity, anti-racist and diversity, equity and inclusion practices,” according to a 2021-2022 interviewing rubric obtained by Do No Harm. Applicants were given points if they are a member of the “LGBTQIA+” community or are “African American, Latinx or Native American.”

“This residency interview scoring system should worry all Americans who may require healthcare,” Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, board chair of Do No Harm, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “The only alphabet letters that are important in a physician are three A’s- ability, availability and affability. This is what prospective physicians should be judged on.”

Applicants also received points if they were multilingual and have an “intersection/identity including LGBTQIA+,” the document showed. It is unclear whether the rubric is still in use. (Read more from “Med School Weighed Residents’ Commitment to ‘Anti-Racist Practices’ in Admissions Process” HERE)
