U.S. Justice Dept. Sues Philly School District Over Beard-Length Rule (+video)

Photo Credit: James Alby / flickrThe U.S. Department of Justice has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the School District of Philadelphia, claiming a rule regulating the length of employees’ beards constitutes religious discrimination.

According to the suit filed Wednesday, the district in October 2010 instituted a new grooming policy preventing school police officers and security guards from having beards longer than a quarter of an inch.

School police officer Siddiq Abu-Bakr maintained an untrimmed beard for the 27 years he worked at the district, the suit states. Abu-Bakr is a member of the Islamic faith, which he says requires that he not cut his beard.

When Abu-Bakr notified his supervisor his religious beliefs precluded him from complying with the new policy, he was allegedly issued a written reprimand cautioning that continued violation of the rule would result in “further disciplinary action.”

School District: Disgusting Masturbation Book NOT Being Taught to Fourth Graders

Photo Credit: Web screenshot edited versionA Tennessee school district was accused of assigning a sexually graphic textbook to fourth graders and teaching them to masturbate, but district officials say there is no truth to the rumor.

The claim was made by Victoria Jackson, a conservative stand-up comedian and independent candidate for county commissioner in Williamson County, Tennessee. According to Jackson’s blog, Williamson County schools were using the book “It’s Perfectly Normal,” as part of the official curriculum for fourth graders.

It’s easy to see why inclusion of the book in the fourth grade curriculum would be offensive to many people: The book features dozens of illustrations of naked people in sexual positions. One chapter teaches kids how to masturbate — and depicts naked cartoon characters giving visual demonstrations. Another discusses the proper technique for putting a condom on a penis using detailed pictures.

By WND.

WARNING: The following article includes explicit content.

Hundreds of elementary and middle-school students touring the campus of the University of California at Berkeley received a startling “education” when they witnessed some of the vulgar displays associated with the university’s observance of National Condom Week.

UC President Janet Napolitano, the former Department of Homeland Security secretary, also was on campus Feb. 13 as a man dressed in giant penis costume walked around handing out condoms.

Also on display last week, the College Fix reported, were an assortment of “sex-themed activities such as a vagina-anus condom toss, a vulva and anus ‘pin the tail’ and a condom water-balloon game.”

An undergraduate student at the university told the College Fix that events also included an “insertive condom fisting activity to show how stretchy these sexy condoms can be.”

“There were kids walking by and looking and being confused,” UC Berkeley student Claire Chiara said. “It’s just really inappropriate.”

‘We Teach Our Children Not to Sleep Around’: Dad Outraged Over Biology Homework That Stepped Way, Way Over the Line

Photo Credit: WDIV-TVLet’s say your high school freshman son or daughter asks for your help with a particularly difficult biology homework assignment.

So you walk over, glance at the worksheet on DNA and blood type, and notice questions about a mother trying to determine the identity of her baby’s father.

Then question reads in part: “She had the state take a blood test of potential fathers. Based on the information in this table, why was the baby taken away by the state after the test?”

Possible answers? Cab driver, bartender, flight attendant, and guy at the club.

That was what Larry Basaj read on his daughter Audri’s homework page from Romeo High School — about 30 miles north of Detroit — and he said he flipped.

‘The Definition of Bullying’: Church vs. State Threat Leads School to Cut Ties with ‘Operation Christmas Child’ (+video)

Photo Credit: ShutterStock.comJust days after a South Carolina charter school came under fire and subsequently dropped support for Operation Christmas Child, an annual outreach to poor children that is operated by Samaritan’s Purse, an evangelical Christian organization, another public school in Colorado has done the same.

But while SkyView Academy, an elementary school in Highlands Ranch, Colo., officially cut ties with the group, parents are fighting back with an effort of their own to make sure that the outreach goes on as planned.

The school announced last week that it will be severing its relationship with Operation Christmas Child, ending two years of participation in the outreach, The Christian Post reported.

Students at the school had been raising funds and were preparing to put shoe boxes together for children in need. This was halted, however, when the American Humanist Association recently wrote a letter threatening a lawsuit if the charter school didn’t stop working with Operation Christmas Child.

The letter warned that the school is violating the separation of church and state by facilitating student participation in a Christian outreach — one that shares the Bible’s central message along with items for kids in need.

No Recourse for Girls Harassed by Transgender Student (+video)

Photo Credit: hunnnterrrThe push for radical transgender rights in schools is trumping privacy rights at one Colorado high school.

A male student at Florence High School who claims to be a transgender has been harrassing girls in the bathroom. When parents complained, school officials said the boy’s rights as a transgender trumped their daughters’ privacy rights.

As the controversy grew, some students were threatened with being kicked off athletic teams or charged with hate crimes if they continued to voice concerns.

Ohio School District Agrees to Keep Portrait of Jesus off Wall, Pay $95G Fine

Photo Credit: APAn Ohio school district has agreed to keep a portrait of Jesus Christ off school property and pay a $95,000 fine in the face of legal pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union.

The Jackson City School District, located in Jackson, reached a deal on Friday after the ACLU, along with the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation, sued the district in February, citing “unconstitutional” actions and charging that students and visitors to the school “will continue to suffer permanent, severe and irreparable harm and injury,” according to the lawsuit.

The picture had been hanging in Jackson’s high school since 1947 as part of a “Hall of Honor” display meant to highlight famous historical figures.

Parents Warned about Porn in School

President Obama already has declared June to be homosexual “Pride” month, but “gay” activists now are designating October “LGBT History Month.”

The move has prompted a pro-family organization in California to issue a warning to parents across the United States about the possibility their children would be confronted with explicit pornography in their public schools this month.

Teachers, they explain, could introduce material that promotes homosexuality.

The homosexual-rights group Equality Forum, which is promoting LGBT History Month, is profiling various homosexuals and lesbians for each day of the month, including some whose work can accurately be described as triple-X rated.

Many schools plan to incorporate LGBT History Month into lessons.

Obama, Holder to Place Good Guys with Guns in Schools

obama-hugs-kids-wh-photoCNN reports that President Obama is “putting millions of dollars into funding armed police officers in schools around the country, an idea not far removed from a National Rifle Association proposal.”

According to CNN, on September 27 the DOJ announced $45 million in funding meant to “create 356 new school resource officer positions.”

The $45 million will be distributed in the form of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants. One of the earliest grants will be to Newtown, Connecticut, to create two new officers for Newtown schools.

Insanity: Seventh-Grader Suspended Three Days for Gun Keychain the Size of a Quarter

Yet another student has landed in trouble for having something that represents a gun, but isn’t actually anything like a real gun.

This time, the student is 12-year-old Joseph Lyssikatos, a student in advanced math who had perfect attendance last year. The seventh-grader made the mistake of bringing a ridiculously small, silver keychain shaped like a gun to Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School in Coventry, R.I, reports local NBC affiliate WJAR.

The two-inch keychain fell out of Lyssikatos’s backpack while he was at school.

After another kid picked it up and displayed it to other students, a teacher intervened and impounded the keychain.

Apparently fearing that the roughly quarter-sized hunk of cheap metal was somehow a danger to life and limb, school officials sprang into action. They suspended Lyssikatos for three days. He has also been banned from an upcoming class field trip.

High School Football Coach’s Radical Punishment for Entire Team Gets Surprise Reaction from Parents

In these days of helicopter parenting — particularly moms and dads who view their athletic kids as superstars who can do no wrong — the jobs of non-parental authority figures are often considerably more difficult.

So when Matt Labrum, head football coach at Union High School in Roosevelt, Utah, suspended his entire team — all 80 of them — last week, can you guess what was coming next from parents of those suddenly former players?

If you figure Labrum got his head handed to him as he heard call after call for his immediate dismissal, you’d be incorrect.

Believe it or not, Labrum says he’s received no ill will from moms and dads for his radical disciplinary move — and that has everything to do with the off-field problems that fueled the total team suspension (e.g., bad attitudes toward teachers, skipping classes, failing grades, and a serious allegation of cyberbullying) and his desire to correct them.

So Labrum told the players to turn in their jerseys — if they wanted to wear them again, they’d each have to earn the right to do so by jumping through an arduous series of hoops, including extensive community service, according to Deseret News.
