Miss Universe Puerto Rico Announces Second Transgender Contestant

Miss Universe Puerto Rico has announced its second biological male contestant since 2023 — revealing on Wednesday that transgender model Gabriel Rodríguez Velázquez is among this year’s competitors vying for the crown.

Gabriel Rodríguez Velázquez — representing the town of Cidra — is the second male to compete for the crown in Miss Universe Puerto Rico, according to a report by Hola!.

Notably, Rodríguez Velázquez’s participation in Miss Universe Puerto Rico makes for the second transgender model to compete for the crown — after Daniela Arroyo González, who became the first trans contestant in 2023.

“Transgender man competing to become Miss Universe Puerto Rico,” one X user wrote, sharing a promotional video. “Gabriel Rodríguez Velázquez, who identifies as a woman, is hoping to win the women’s beauty pageant for 2026 after previously qualifying to compete in 2023.”

“Men replacing women in women only spaces is such a tired and played out scam. At this point is just pathetic,” one X user reacted.

WATCH: Kamala Harris Claps Along to Puerto Rican Protest Song Before Realizing It’s About Her

Vice President Kamala Harris had an embarrassing fumble during a Friday visit to Puerto Rico, where she was spotted clapping along to a protest song against her before an aide translated the lyrics.

After delivering remarks in the territory’s capital of San Juan, Harris stopped by the neighborhood of Santurce to tour the Goyoco community center and hear from community leaders, Fox News reports.

A group of protesters holding signs with messages, including “Kamala Harris war criminal,” and calling the United States “genocidal” met the vice president outside of the community center, along with a band playing music.

Video captured the hilarious moment when Harris went from smiling and clapping along to dropping her hands when a staffer next to her reportedly translated the Spanish lyrics.

Puerto Rico Statehood Might Not Be a GOP Disaster Waiting To Happen

The island of Puerto Rico becoming a state might not lead to Democrats obtaining two additional senate seats, despite the party’s high hopes.

The U.S. House passed a bipartisan bill to put Puerto Rico’s territorial status up for a vote with three potential options: statehood, full independence, or sovereignty will full U.S. association. In a symbolic 2012 referendum, statehood received over 60% of the vote with the other two options included.

New York Democratic Reps. Nydia Velazquez and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have led the push for Puerto Rican self determination, which was included in the party’s 2020 election platform. Democratic proposals for Puerto Rico include large economic, education and climate plans for the island funded by the federal government.

In contrast, South Carolina GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham said Puerto Rican statehood “dilutes our power,” referring to a Republican senate majority. Graham’s statement came during a Nov. 7 rally for GOP candidate Herschel Walker before the 2022 midterm elections.

“We assume that Puerto Ricans are democrats given the historical relationship between Puerto Ricans living in different States and the Democratic Party. But this is not necessarily true for Puerto Ricans on the Island. There’s never been a high-quality survey that measures Puerto Ricans’ ideology or their position on different issues so we can gauge what ideology they will lean toward once a state,” Mayra Velez Sarrano, a political scientist at the University of Puerto Rico told the Daily Caller. WATCH: Massive Meteor Fireball Visible for Nearly 30 Seconds Over Puerto Rico

A large meteor was visible at 4.55 local time this Friday from almost all of Puerto Rico as reported by the Caribbean Astronomy Society (SAC).

“Although most meteors are only visible for a few seconds, this event was significant since images that we managed to capture show that it was visible for 27 seconds, that is almost half a minute,” said Eddie Irizarry, vice president of the SAC.

“It looked bigger and bigger, it didn’t look like a common meteor,” said Idaly Correa, who witnessed the spectacular sighting from the municipality of Guayanilla.

The SAC director clarified that despite the long duration of the meteor, it was not space debris, but a natural meteor, that is, a space rock disintegrating through the atmosphere.

The Beautiful Secret to a Long Life by the World’s Oldest Living Man

At the tender age of 112, Puerto Rican Emilio Flores Márquez has shared the secret to his longevity — and it’s not what you might expect.

The great-grandfather, who is a month shy of 113, was recently acknowledged as the world’s oldest living male by Guinness World Records. And the great-grandfather puts his impressive age down to the simple lesson he learned from his father as a young child: to love everyone.

“My father raised me with love, loving every one … He always told me and my siblings to do good, to share everything with others. Besides, Christ lives in me,” Márquez explained to the Guinness World Records, as reported in the Daily Mail. . .

Although he had a pacemaker fitted at the age of 101, and is suffering from hearing loss, the centenarian is in good health. With his birthday approaching on August 8, he can hopefully continue to spread this message of love to his five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and all those who have the blessing of hearing his inspiring story. Lisa Murkowski Could Move the Puerto Rico Statehood Bill Forward

Last year, while most Americans were focusing on the contentious presidential election, there was another critical election that could have an outsized influence on American politics for years to come.

The vote on the island asked Puerto Ricans whether they supported statehood for the island — the third such status vote in less than 10 years. Once again, the majority of Puerto Rican voters, 52.34 percent, supported statehood. It is now incumbent upon Congress to take action.

In addition to Puerto Rico’s representative Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon in the House of Representatives and others, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the former chairwoman and current senior member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has an opportunity to play a crucial role.

The Energy and Natural Resources Committee has jurisdiction over issues surrounding Puerto Rico’s status. The committee would be the first step for relevant legislation in the Senate. This is one direct tie for Sen. Murkowski. A less direct tie is that the senator was born in Alaska at a time when it was still a territory, which may help her understand this issue better than most. Trump: I’ve Taken Better Care of Puerto Rico Than ‘Any Living Human Being’

By The Daily Beast. President Trump told reporters on Thursday that he has “taken better care of Puerto Rico than any man ever.” “Puerto Rico has been taken care of better by Donald Trump than by any living human being and I think the people of Puerto Rico understand that,” he claimed. “But you do have the mayor of San Juan who, frankly, doesn’t know what she’s doing—and the governor, they gotta spend the money wisely. They don’t know how to spend the money, and they’re not spending it wisely—but I’m giving them more money than they’ve ever gotten[.]” The mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, very publicly criticized Trump for his treatment of the U.S. territory in the wake of hurricanes Maria and Irma, going so far as to claim his administration killed people due to “neglect.” The Washington Post reported earlier this week that Trump complained about the amount of aid funding Puerto Rico got in comparison to Florida and Texas to GOP senators.

Someone Screwed Up: FEMA Delivered Millions of Bottles to Puerto Rico, It’s Been Rotting on a Runway for a Year

Last year in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, FEMA delivered millions of bottles of water to the island as part of the relief effort. After the supplies were delivered, hundreds of pallets worth, they were never distributed. CBS News broke the story.

The photos were taken by Abdiel Santana, who works with the United Forces of Rapid Action agency of the Puerto Rican Police. Santana said he snapped the photos because he was angry to still see them sitting there, nearly a year after he first spotted them.

Marty Bahamonde, director of disaster operations at FEMA, confirmed that the agency delivered the bottled water to the island but said the agency didn’t track specific shipments. It’s not clear what became of the bottles after the delivery. FEMA is investigating whether or not the agency placed the water bottles on the runway.

Food Donated to Puerto Rico Hurricane Victims Found Rotting in Parking Lot

Ten shipping containers filled with food, baby products, and over-the-counter medications like Tylenol — all supplies desperately needed in the days and weeks following Hurricane Maria — were found rotting in a Puerto Rico parking lot last week, never distributed.

The New York Times reports that a local Puerto Rican radio station found the goods, melted, spoiled, and covered in rat droppings, in a parking lot outside one of Puerto Rico’s state elections offices. The goods were clearly meant to help Puerto Ricans in need, many of whom went weeks without electricity and running water last summer in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The items, Radio Isla reports, were all private donations made by non-profits. Those items were “collected at the election commissions offices, and then distributed to the National Guard,” who gave the items to struggling residents. After the crisis subsided, though, Puerto Rico’s government officials apparently gave up on distributing supplies and left them rotting, still in their trailers, just outside their offices in San Juan.

Authorities told The New York Times that the goods had been there for “more than a year.” In one of the containers, a local official said, was “whatever was left after the National Guard left was put in those containers.” (Read more from “Food Donated to Puerto Rico Hurricane Victims Found Rotting in Parking Lot” HERE)
