Fourth of July: ‘Squad’ Members Scold America for ‘Stolen Land’ and Slavery

Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cori Bush (D-MO) used the occasion of America’s independence to “demand reparations now” and push messages about “stolen land” and slavery.

In his Fourth of July message on Twitter, Bowman tweeted, “This July 4th, we must remember that we stand on stolen land toiled by enslaved Africans and recommit ourselves to the fight for freedom, equality, & justice so that these ideals are accessible to everyone, not just a privileged few.”

Similarly, Bush posted a message admonishing the Declaration of Independence and the founders, saying, “The Declaration of Independence was written by enslavers and didn’t recognize Black people as human.”

“Today is a great day to demand Reparations Now,” the Black Lives Matter activist added.

As members of the “Squad,” Bowman and Bush are some of the most liberal Democrats in their caucus, frequently pushing items such as reparations and Green New Deal-style climate measures. (Read more from “Fourth of July: ‘Squad’ Members Scold America for ‘Stolen Land’ and Slavery” HERE)

California Reparations Task Force Votes to Approve Restitution Plan

California’s reparations task force voted on Saturday in favor of a reparations program, the first of its kind in the United States.

The committee of nine members voted to give final approval a plan with detailed explanations for how restitution should be made to victims of systemic racism, housing discrimination, mass incarceration, and health care inequities. The plan now goes to state legislature for approval. If passed, it could mean hundreds of billions of dollars in payments to black residents of the Golden State.

Calculations provided ahead of the vote showed that black residents who have lived in California their whole life and are 71 or older could receive up to $1.2 million in payments.

The proposed payments released on Wednesday revealed various alleged harms the committee seeks to atone for on behalf of the state of California, with all of the alleged harms varying depending on the time spent in California. San Francisco to Air Black Reparations Plan, $5M per Person

A controversial draft reparations proposal that includes a $5 million lump-sum payment for each eligible Black person could make San Francisco the first major U.S. city to fund reparations, though it faces steep financial headwinds and blistering criticism from conservatives.

Tuesday’s meeting of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will include a presentation by San Francisco’s African American Reparations Advisory Committee, which released its draft report in December. The $5 million-per-person payment is among more than 100 recommendations ranging from offering grants to buy and maintain homes to exempting Black businesses from paying taxes.

Supervisors can vote to adopt all, none or some of the recommendations and can change them. Several board members have expressed concerns over the potential hit the lump-sum payment and other options would have on the city budget, already facing a shortfall.
