NYC: Socialist Lawmaker Claims Stealing for ‘Biological Need’ Should Not Be Illegal

A socialist lawmaker in New York City has claimed “biological need” gives shoplifters the right to steal from store shelves.

State Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher, who describes herself as a “neighborhood organizer” and “democratic socialist,” made her comments on Thursday outside Manhattan Criminal Court, the New York Post reported Saturday.

She was joined by members of Court Watch NYC, which claimed they monitored hundreds of arraignments for several days and found half of those cases were misdemeanors.

Gallagher said:

Most of what we saw were crimes of poverty-people who are stealing things like toothpaste, people who were stealing things like, you know, soap. And that means if you’re stealing those things, you need them. And we are choosing to protect billion-dollar companies, like CVS and Walgreens, over the people who are struggling to get by. So I would say that the true crime is that there is such incredible wealth disparity in this city that there are people who can be thrown in jail simply for having a biological need.

Gallagher said she is fighting to “pass things like treatment not jail and that we hold the line on the incredible criminal justice reforms that we have done over the last 10 and 20 years that are constantly being threatened by right-wing media who are looking to fear monger about people who are actually just in absolute dire straits.” (Read more from “NYC: Socialist Lawmaker Claims Stealing for ‘Biological Need’ Should Not Be Illegal” HERE)

Chaos in Brazil: Protesters Storm Capital, Destroying Supreme Court and Congress (VIDEO)

Thousands of opponents of socialist convicted felon President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stormed his offices and the headquarters of the Congress and Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) of Brazil on Sunday, reportedly demolishing the facades of two of the three buildings and causing “irreparable” damage to priceless artifacts in the chambers.

The riot in Brasilia occurred while Lula himself was in Sao Paulo state assessing the damage of recent floods. Lula, in a public statement following police action to subdue the protesters, announced an official “federal intervention” in Brasilia – consolidating the public security powers of several agencies into the hands of a hand-picked, top-level official – and accused police of acting in “bad faith” in failing to prevent the protesters from storming the buildings.

The incident is an offshoot of months of protests following the October presidential election that saw Lula narrowly defeat then-incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro in two rounds of voting. Most protesters support Bolsonaro but, more broadly, oppose Lula’s victory as illegitimate on several grounds, including his multiple convictions on charges of corrupt acts occurring during his first two terms as president. An audit of the 2022 runoff presidential election, which featured only Bolsonaro and Lula as candidates, by the Armed Forces of Brazil concluded that no guarantee could be made of the absence of fraud or irregularities.

Protesters also accuse the STF, particularly its head justice Alexandre de Moraes, of intervening in the election by censoring mentions of Lula’s corruption case and silencing Bolsonaro supporters through fines and police raids.

Departing Whole Foods CEO Frets That “Socialists Are Taking Over”

Outgoing Whole Foods CEO John Mackey raised concerns that ” socialists are taking over” key institutions across the country.

Describing himself as a “capitalist at heart,” Mackey lamented that rights such as the right to bear arms and freedom of speech are coming “under threat” as socialist influences begin to dominate education, corporations, and other institutions.

“My concern is that I feel like socialists are taking over,” Mackey explained during an interview with Reason. “They’re marching through the institutions. They’re …taking over education. It looks like they’ve taken over a lot of the corporations. It looks like they’ve taken over the military. And it’s just continuing.”

Mackey previously co-authored a book titled Conscious Capitalism, in which he discussed four key tenets to help bolster capitalism: stakeholder integration, conscious leadership, conscious culture, and conscious management.

“You know, I’m a capitalist at heart, and I believe in liberty and capitalism. Those are my twin values. And I feel like, you know, with the way freedom of speech is today, the movement on gun control, a lot of the liberties that I’ve taken for granted most of my life, I think, are under threat,” he told the outlet. SHOCK POLL: Dems Prefer Socialism to Capitalism

Fox News released a poll on Thursday which revealed that a majority of Democratic voters prefer socialism over capitalism. The results, Ronn Blitzer says in his write-up for FOX Business, indicates a “drastic shift from last year” and a “sharp reversal from just a year and a half ago.” . . .

Among total respondents, 32 percent have a favorable view of socialism, while 61 percent have an unfavorable view. These numbers are nearly reversed, however, among Democratic voters, with 59 percent having a favorable view and 31 percent having an unfavorable view. Democratic men, at 64 percent, and liberals, at 63 percent, had the highest favorable ratings of socialism.

Other demographics where a majority had a favorable view of socialism included Blacks at 59 percent, Non-white women who had a favorable-unfavorable viewpoint breakdown of 50 to 42 percent, Democratic women whose favorable-unfavorable breakdown was 56-32 percent, and Biden voters, where the breakdown was 56 percent favorable and 34 percent unfavorable.

When it comes to capitalism, 56 percent of respondents had a favorable view, while 37 percent had an unfavorable view. While 49 percent of Democrats had a favorable view of capitalism, compared to the 44 percent who had an unfavorable view, one can clearly see that more Democrats have a favorable view of socialism than capitalism, by double digits. Further, many more Democrats have an unfavorable view of capitalism than they do of socialism. (Read more from “SHOCK POLL: Dems Prefer Socialism to Capitalism” HERE)

Dem Squad Sings ‘Communist’ Song ‘This Land is Your Land’

Democrat congressmen and women protested Monday evening to urge President Joe Biden to extend the eviction moratorium, and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) spoke about Woody Guthrie, the writer of “This Land Is Your Land,” as a “communist” and a “socialist” before proceeding to lead the group in the iconic song.

Markey was joined by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Democrat “Squad” members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Cori Bush (D-MO). Since Thursday, the “Squad” has protested the end of the moratorium by camping with a group on the steps of the Capitol.

Breitbart News livestreamed as Markey introduced “This Land Is Your Land”:

A great socialist, who wrote a great song, which a lot of people think is an anthem for our country, but it was written by a socialist, okay? Back in the 1930s. A communist. He was a communist. He was a socialist. He was a radical. And you know what that song is? “This Land Is Your Land.” Can we sing that? Who can start that?

Before the group could begin singing, a Capitol policeman interrupted, instructing protesters to gather their belongings and not leave them unattended.

Here’s How Wealthy Some of America’s Most Prominent Socialists Are

Some of America’s highest-profile advocates for socialism live quite luxurious lifestyles compared to average, working-class Americans. The average income for individual Americans is $35,977; for a household, it’s $68,703. . .

Bernie Sanders burst into the national consciousness in 2016 when he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination against Hillary Clinton by railing against millionaires and billionaires. He’s since dropped the “millionaires” part in many of his speeches and proposals, perhaps in part due to the fact that he is one himself.

Sanders released tax returns in 2019 which confirmed he is a millionaire, and his income spiked substantially after his fairly successful run for the White House. “These tax returns show that our family has been fortunate,” Sanders said at the time. “I am very grateful for that, as I grew up in a family that lived paycheck to paycheck and I know the stress of economic insecurity.” . . .

[Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Patrisse] Cullors was an original co-founder of Black Lives Matter, and she’s a self-described Marxist.

Despite her devotion to the father of socialist theory, Cullors had no issue making up to $20,000 per month as the leader of a Los Angeles-based jail reform group, and she’s purchased at least four homes worth a combined total of more than $3 million across the country since 2016. U.S. Voters Still Prefer Capitalism Over Socialism

The majority of likely voters favors a free market system over socialism, a poll from the conservative Heartland Institute conducted with Rasmussen Reports found.

The survey found that 75% of respondents preferred capitalist competition. Socialism was preferred by 11% of respondents, and 14% weren’t sure.

“Despite the increased calls for socialism by many on the far left, the vast majority of likely voters believe that the United States should embrace a free-market economy,” Heartland editor Chris Talgo said in a statement. “Only a sliver of likely voters think that the United States should abandon the free-market capitalistic policies that are responsible for making the United States the wealthiest nation in world history.”

Socialism still remained more popular among younger voters, where support grew to roughly 20%, and free market economics had made inroads — support for capitalism among respondents aged 18-39 swelled from 59% in 2019 to 68%, the Heartland Institute noted. Ukrainian-Born GOP Congresswoman Warns America: We’re ‘Building Socialism’ Like She Saw in the Soviet Union

Republican Congresswoman-elect Victoria Spartz, of Indiana, warned that the American left is now “building socialism” like she saw in the Soviet Union. . .

Future Congresswoman Spartz appeared on Fox and Friends and shared her experiences growing up in communist Ukraine, which at the time was part of the Soviet Union.

“I grew up in a socialistic country, the Socialist Republic of Ukraine. I saw what happens when it runs out of money and it is not pretty,” she said.

“And now, I came to America 20 years ago with a suitcase after meeting my husband on a train in Europe. He’s a raised and born Hoosier. And now we’re building socialism. I’m kind of going full circles. I can tell you what is going to be next. It’s very sad for me to see that,” she added.

Spartz, who spent 42 years of her life under the crushing reality of the Soviet Union and the socialist system, warned moderates who claimed that Biden and the Democrats would never implement socialism to be “good students of history.” (Read more from “Ukrainian-Born GOP Congresswoman Warns America: We’re ‘Building Socialism’ Like She Saw in the Soviet Union” HERE)

WATCH: Dems Distance Themselves From ‘Defund the Police’ Movement, Socialism

After unexpected and significant losses on Election Day, House Democrats on Sunday distanced themselves from the “defund the police” movement and the label of “socialism,” claiming that they were merely slogans or Republican smears.

“Not a single member of Congress that I’m aware of campaigned on socialism or defunding the police in this general election,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) said on CNN’s State of the Union. “These were largely slogans or they were demands from activist groups.” The congresswoman, who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, added that “Republicans levied very effective rhetorical attacks against our party” by linking Democrats to the movements.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.), who called to “completely dismantle” her city’s police department this year, went further and said it was a Republican “narrative” that radical movements doomed Democrats in swing districts.

“All of those members who are part of the progressive caucus who are also in those swing districts won their races or are on track to win their races,” Omar told CNN. “This myth that the Republicans are using to develop a narrative to start to create a wedge between Democrats is really something we can’t allow to stick and that narrative to get hold.”

Shocking Poll: 40 Percent of Americans Favor Socialism

Forty percent of Americans now hold a favorable view of socialism, a Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation report, released Wednesday, found.

The foundation’s annual report shows that younger Americans have led the United States’ leftward push, responding with higher rates of support for socialism and communism than older generations.

Thirty-eight percent of Gen Z respondents said they hope Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden “pursues socialist policies” if elected in November. Thirty percent of the same age group view Marxism favorably. (Read more from “Shocking Poll: 40 Percent of Americans Favor Socialism” HERE)
