Democrats Want to Expand Mail-in Voting, Allow 16-Year-Olds and Felons to Vote

Democrats in New Mexico are rushing to change the state’s voting laws ahead of this year’s midterm elections that are expected to be particularly bruising for the party.

The proposal would lower the voting age to 16 for local elections, expand the use of mail-in ballots, create an option for straight party-line voting on ballots and remove a prohibition on voting by convicted felons, though felons would not be allowed to vote from prison.

Led by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Democratic state lawmakers are proposing a sweeping rewrite of elections laws to push back on what they say is a “wave of anti-democratic sentiment nationwide.”

“Protecting voting rights is essential to upholding our democracy and ensuring New Mexicans’ voices are heard,” said Mrs. Lujan Grisham, a Democrat who also is facing a tough reelection battle this year. “While voting rights are under attack across the country, New Mexico is taking every action to protect and expand them.”

Mrs. Lujan Grisham’s proposal also would permit people without a state-issued ID to register online to vote using a Social Security number. Her plan would also designate Election Day as a state holiday. (Read more from “Democrats Want to Expand Mail-in Voting, Allow 16-Year-Olds and Felons to Vote” HERE)

Biden Plans To Attack Filibuster in Last-Ditch Effort To Pass Massive Voting Bill

The Senate is set to reconvene this week — one of their top priorities being the so called “For the People Act,” which Democrats claim fights “racism” and “suppression,” but would instead effectively nationalize elections and enable voter fraud.

Republicans previously blocked the bill by using the filibuster and preventing “tyranny of the majority.” Top Democrats are now calling on President Biden to lobby for “filibuster reform” in order to ram through the legislation this time around without the need for Republican votes, Rolling Stone reported Sunday.

“According to three people briefed on the White House’s position and its recent communications with outside groups, Biden assured Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that he was ready to push for filibuster reform,” the report states.

A source briefed on the White House’s position said Biden told Schumer, “Chuck, you tell me when you need me to start making phone calls.”

During a late-July meeting, Biden reportedly made a pledge to Schumer and Pelosi saying he would “get involved himself and lobby the handful of moderate Democrats to convince them to weaken the filibuster so that the For the People Act could pass without any Republican votes” if they “tried every option they had” first to pass the bill. Multiple sources since then reportedly told Rolling Stone that the White House has “devoted more staff to the issue.” (Read more from “Biden Plans To Attack Filibuster in Last-Ditch Effort To Pass Massive Voting Bill” HERE)

Democrats’ Bid to Rewrite U.S. Voting Laws Is Blocked by GOP in Senate; Republicans Will Introduce Election Bill Requiring States to Maintain Ballot Transparency

By New York Post. An effort by congressional Democrats to rewrite U.S. election and voting laws stalled in the Senate Tuesday, blocked by a wall of Republican opposition.

The bill, known as the For the People Act, represented a breathtaking federal infringement on states’ authority to conduct their own elections without fraud — and one meant to ultimately benefit Democrats, Republicans have argued.

It failed on a 50-50 vote after Republicans, some of whom derided the bill as the “Screw the People Act,” denied Democrats the 60 votes needed to begin debate. Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the chamber as the bill failed.

The rejection forces Democrats to reckon with what comes next for their top legislative priority in a narrowly divided Senate. They’ve touted the measure as a powerful counterweight to scores of proposals advancing in GOP-controlled statehouses making it more difficult to vote.

“This is a battle for the soul of America,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. “We will keep fighting until we succeed.” (Read more from “Democrats’ Bid to Rewrite U.S. Voting Laws Is Blocked by GOP in Senate” HERE)

Republicans Will Introduce Election Bill Requiring States to Maintain Ballot Transparency

By The Federalist. Led by Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, Republicans are putting forth a bill Tuesday that seeks to address voting security and fraud irregularities in the wake of a controversial 2020 presidential election, The Federalist has exclusively learned.

The Vote Outcome Transparency in Elections (VOTE) Act would require states both publicly disclose the number of ballots in possession on election night, and mandates all ballots delivered by the United States Postal Service are postmarked. In the build-up to the election, many states changed procedures and policies, which Republicans argued were unconstitutional.

“The debacle of the 2020 elections exposed something troubling: the unconstitutional and unilateral changing of election laws by several counties and states across the country,” Donalds told The Federalist.

“The left likes to excuse these divergences from the Constitution because of the pandemic. We cannot ignore fraud and illegality, especially when it comes to the sanctity of our elections. The catastrophe of the 2020 elections must never happen again, and the American people must have faith in the security of our ballots and voting system going forward,” he said. Poll: 80 Percent of Americans Support Voter ID Laws

A new poll found that four in five Americans are in favor of people having to show a form of identification to vote in elections.

Monmouth University’s poll surveyed more than 800 potential adult voters between July 9 and 14. 80 percent of respondents said they support voter ID law measures, whereas only 18 percent opposed it.

The findings come amid debates among lawmakers about voter ID laws. Many Democrats have backed H.R. 1, also known as The For The People Act, which would do away with voter ID laws and allow universal mail-in voting. Republicans have indicated they will block the measure in the Senate. (Read more from “Poll: 80 Percent of Americans Support Voter ID Laws” HERE)
