Russian Hacker Group Threatens to Release Sensitive DC Police Records

A Russian-speaking cyberhacking group threatened to release sensitive stolen data from the Washington, D.C., police department that could put lives at risk if the group’s demands for more money are not fulfilled.

The threat comes shortly after another cyberattack on a major oil pipeline that has severely restricted gas supply on the East Coast, illustrating the threat posed by online criminal gangs that can create destruction and demise from far away.

“This is far worse than any hack of other police departments previously,” Brett Callow, a cyberthreat expert at security firm Emsisoft, told the Associated Press. He also said he was not aware of any law enforcement agency ever paying a ransom before.

In April, the Babuk group hacked into the city police department’s online network and threatened to release personal details on the identities of confidential informants to the police if a ransom was not paid. Such a release could put the lives of the informants at risk.

The gang asked for $4 million and received a counteroffer from the district police of $100,000, which it rejected, according to the Associated Press. (Read more from “Russian Hacker Group Threatens to Release Sensitive DC Police Records” HERE)

GOP Senator Has an Idea to Match Democrats’ DC Statehood ‘Power Grab’; Cruz: Dems Using ‘Race Card’ in D.C. Statehood Debate

By Townhall. The Democratic majority in the House of Representatives passed legislation recognizing D.C. statehood on Thursday, and the measure now heads to the Senate. Granting D.C. statehood has minimal GOP support, and it is unlikely to overcome the 60-vote threshold in the upper chamber.

While Republicans remain opposed to making D.C. the 51st state, on a constitutional basis, one Republican lawmaker proposed a different idea to match Democrats’ demand. GOP Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) introduced legislation to make D.C. a part of Maryland, as opposed to giving individual statehood.

Cruz: Dems Using ‘Race Card’ in D.C. Statehood Debate — ‘Only Card They Have in Their Deck’

By Breitbart. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Friday reacted to Democrats’ remarks on the House floor in defense of Washington, D.C. statehood, including Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) calling GOP arguments “racist trash.”

Cruz said in an interview with Fox News Channel’s “The Faulkner Focus” that the “race card” is the “only card” Democrats have in their deck. He called into question why the Democrats are pushing for more power instead of focusing on coming out of the coronavirus pandemic. (Read more from “Cruz: Dems Using ‘Race Card’ in D.C. House Approves Democrats D.C. Statehood Plan

The House on Thursday voted to approve what has been described as a Democrat “power grab” – a plan to make the District of Columbia the 51st state and line up two more party members in the Senate. . .

It’s because, the report said, “The district’s population of more than 700,000 residents reliably votes for Democrats and would, without question, send two additional Democratic senators to Congress.”

The vote was 216-208 along party lines but has a low likelihood of survival in the Senate, where Democrats would need at least 10 Republican senators to support their political maneuver.

Democrats have lobbied for the plan, saying taxpaying District residents are denied representation in Congress.

“Congress has the moral obligation and the constitutional authority to pass H.R. 51,” claimed Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat who now is Washington’s nonvoting member of the House. (Read more from “House Approves Democrats D.C. Statehood Plan” HERE)

New DC Gun Dealer Sees Business Boom After Overcoming City Roadblocks

A man who had to hire a lobbyist to help him navigate regulatory hurdles to become the first and only licensed Washington, D.C., gun dealer in nearly a year is now seeing business boom.

Shawn Poulin, the owner of D.C. Security Associates, located on K Street in Northwest, said he had to spend thousands of dollars on a lobbyist to help navigate the city’s complex rules and regulations on firearms businesses. “People told me, ‘Be prepared to deal with D.C. government, they’re as corrupt as anyone else,'” he said. “I had to get a lobbyist and I was getting friction from the permit zoning guys.”

Mayor Muriel Bowser (D.) and the police department did not respond to questions about Poulin’s difficulty in getting approval for his store.

After pushing through the roadblocks and being approved to open in January, Poulin said his store has seen between 15 and 20 handgun transfers per day. The transfer process that saw some residents caught in a weeks-long wait when the Metropolitan Police Department ran it has been dramatically reduced. Poulin said the store has managed to help customers through the transfer and registration process, which at one point took months, in under 10 days. DC Mayor Ends Curfew, Asks Out-Of-State National Guard Troops to Leave

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser said Thursday that she’s ending a curfew for residents protesting police brutality and that she wants National Guard troops from other states to leave.

Bowser announced the end of four nights of curfew at a press conference following two nights of relative peace despite thousands defying her earlier curfews to protest the killing of George Floyd by Minnesota police.

The mayor said that she wants thousands of National Guard members from other states to return home as order is restored. Bowser said local authorities never requested guardsmen from elsewhere and are studying the legality of their deployment.

“We want troops from out of state out of Washington, DC,” Bowser said.

The local DC National Guard was deployed on Saturday to help protect the White House after initial skirmishes on Friday between Secret Service and protesters. (Read more from “DC Mayor Ends Curfew, Asks Out-Of-State National Guard Troops to Leave” HERE)

Episcopalians Lend D.C. Cathedral to Islamists, Gratis

Leaders of the U.S. Episcopalian church aren’t asking anything in exchange for letting U.S.-based Islamist advocates of sharia law pray to Allah in the prestigious National Cathedral in Washington D.C., despite Christian persecution and murder surging across the Middle East.

“No, there is no quid pro quo here,” said Craig Stapert, the spokesman for the cathedral, where the Islamists will hold their prayers on Friday, Nov. 14.

Instead, “we’re looking for an opportunity to have prayer in our space, and to come together to see what it does for us as people of faith,” he told The Daily Caller.

The Islamists expected at the cathedral include representatives from the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). In 2009, both groups were confirmed as co-conspirators in a conspiracy to deliver funds to the Gaza-based Hamas jihad group, which regularly launches attacks to kill Jews in Israel.

This year, Hamas launched more than 4,000 rockets at Jews in Israel, often from within civilian areas.

Judge Strikes Down DC Ban On Handguns Outside Home

A federal judge struck down the District of Columbia’s ban on carrying guns outside of a person’s home, concluding it violates Second Amendment rights.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Scullin is the latest in a protracted fight over gun laws in Washington. In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision striking down the city’s 32-year-old ban on handguns. Since then, the city has rewritten its laws, lawsuits have been filed and even Congress has waded into the fight.

In a decision made public Saturday, Scullin concluded that the Second Amendment gives people the right to carry a gun outside the home for self-defense. He cited two U.S. Supreme Court cases as important to his ruling — the 2008 opinion striking down the District of Columbia’s ban and a 2010 ruling involving Chicago’s handgun ban.

“There is no longer any basis on which this court can conclude that the District of Columbia’s total ban on the public carrying of ready-to-use handguns outside the home is constitutional under any level of scrutiny,” wrote Scullin, who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush and is a retired Army colonel.

Feds Curtail Major Counterterror Exercise in Washington

The White House sharply curbed a major counterterrorism drill scheduled for Tuesday in Washington that was designed to test the federal government response to threats of car bombs attacks and a chemical weapons strike on the Metro subway system.

The exercise, code named Eagle Horizon 2014, was cut back instead to small-scale communications checks within federal agencies.

The transfer of government functions through groups of emergency personnel located at remote secure locations as part of so-called “continuity of government” operations was scrapped, according to Obama administration security officials.

Disclosure of the curtailed exercise comes as al Qaeda recently issued new threats to conduct car bomb attacks in Washington. Details of the car bombing campaign were contained in the latest issue of the English-language magazine “Inspire,” published by the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

The magazine urged Muslim youth to attack Americans with car bombs and provided detailed instructions for making the devices from easily available components, such as groups of small propane tanks used in cooking grills.

D.C. Health Plans to Include Gender-Reassignment Surgeries

Photo Credit: ASTRID RIECKEND.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray on Thursday announced that the city will recognize gender dysphoria as a medical condition, forcing insurance companies to cover treatments such as gender-reassignment surgery for transgender people.

The coverage extends to all D.C. residents with group or individual health insurance — including the roughly one-third of city residents receiving Medicaid benefits — whose doctors diagnose the condition and for whom treatment is deemed medically necessary.

“This action places the District at the forefront of advancing the rights of transgender individuals,” Mr. Gray said at his ceremonial office at City Hall. The District joins California, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon and Vermont in requiring the coverage, which the federal government will not be made to offer to its employees.

Transgender activists applauded the move, saying it guarantees coverage for treatments such as gender reassignment surgery that can cost tens of thousands of dollars and which have been denied by insurance companies that deemed the procedures cosmetic.

“This isn’t about who’s paying for things. This is about whether or not it’s medical care and who gets to decide that,” said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. “Nobody in America wants their health care decisions made by the insurance companies.”
