Thirty Feet and Counting: California Town Buried in Snow

Since the start of the winter season on Nov. 2, Mammoth Lakes, California, has received 375 inches of snow. In just the past week, since Jan. 9, the town has been inundated with 119 inches of snow. That’s nearly 10 feet of snow burying the resort town. President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for California due to the amount of rain and snow hitting the state all at once.

While Mammoth Lakes is used to winter weather, a local student, Colton Goetz, talked about how schools were affected this week by all this snow. Goetz said, “I do not normally miss school. But this time, we had three red days in a row,” meaning he missed three days of school in a row this week. He added that this “is the most we had in 30 years, which is pretty impressive.” (Read more from “Thirty Feet and Counting: California Town Buried in Snow” HERE)

Vicious 2021 Cold Blast Prediction for This Part of the Country

. . .The Farmers’ Almanac recently released its extended forecast for the 2020-2021 season, which shows this upcoming winter could be brutally cold and snowy for much of the country.

“Based on our time-tested weather formula, the forecast for the upcoming winter looks a lot different from last year, quite divided with some very intense cold snaps and snowfall,” editor Peter Geiger said in a statement.

According to the forecast, those who live in the northern half of the country should get ready for extended bouts of cold.

Long-range forecasts from the periodical are calling for normal to below-normal temperatures in areas from the Great Lakes and Midwest stretching westward over the Northern and Central Plains and into the Rockies.

Areas around the Great Lakes are also expected to see a “fair share of snow,” but above-normal snowfall is also expected farther west from the western Dakotas into northern portions of Colorado and Utah, as well as Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and central and eastern sections of Washington and Oregon. POLAR VORTEX: It’s About to Get Very Cold in the Midwest

The “polar vortex” is bearing down on the northern United States and is expected to drive temperatures as low as 20 to 30 degrees below zero, with windchills registering in the low -50s. The storm is expected to bring some of the coldest temperatures the midwest has seen in decades, and could set records in cities like Chicago, Illinois, and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“By Wednesday and Thursday, morning lows may reach the minus 20s in the Twin Cities, with minus teens and minus 20s in Des Moines, Iowa, Chicago and Milwaukee,” the Weather Channel reports. “Subzero-cold lows may extend through much of the Ohio Valley and into the interior Northeast by late-week. Thursday will be the coldest day along the Northeast Interstate 95 corridor with lows in the single digits from Washington D.C. to Boston.”

Accuweather reports that the temperatures are unique, also, in that they are “prolonged,” and could last from late Tuesday night through early Thursday morning: “Some locations in the Midwest will be below zero continuously for 48-72 hours.” The high on Thusday in Chicago is not expected to top -14 degrees. . .

The rest of the country isn’t safe, either. According to meteorologists with USA Today, one day after the record cold hits the midwest, it’ll bear down on Washington, D.C., and even the “Deep South,” though temperatures down the Eastern seaboard aren’t expected to fall below zero. . .

Places as far south as Jackson, Mississippi; Birmingham, Alabama; and Chattanooga, Tennessee, may see upwards of an inch of snow. “Atlanta could even receive a coating to an inch of snow,” one local weatherman predicted, giving Georgia students an official “snow day” later in the week — something they rarely experience.
