Supreme Court Justices: Skilled Charlatans, Undeserving of Public Trust & Respect?

The ObamaCare decision exposed the Supreme Court as an emperor without clothes. Hoping for deliverance from ObamaCare, many usual critics defended the Court. But with a new term fast approaching, a month before a critical election, Chief Justice Roberts’ handiwork should be remembered as a final wake-up call to consider, once and for all, whether the Court and judicial review merit respect, acceptance and legitimacy.

Upon Paul Ryan’s vice presidential selection, supporters noted his objection that Chief Justice Roberts had “contort[ed] logic and reason to come up with [the ObamaCare] ruling.” Such contortion is nothing unusual except for one thing. The Supreme Court, which normally operates in obscurity, could not escape a glaring spotlight this time, affording a rare opportunity to inform the public about the dark side of what many justices do. This raises questions concerning the utility of elections, what remains of our actual Constitution, the rule of law, and public acceptance of judicial review.

The Roberts opinion as well as attempts to defend it provide easily understood textbook examples of how justices have turned “interpretation” into a scam by manipulating words to mean anything in order to impose their will by authorizing what is constitutionally prohibited and prohibiting what is authorized or required.

Bluntly acknowledging, in order to challenge, the charge that Roberts is “a liar [and] coward,” devoted Roberts apologist Matthew Franck candidly clarified high stakes questions rarely presented to the public. Are all high court justices always honest? Or are many of them, often a majority, just politicians undemocratically, crassly and lawlessly imposing their personal morality based on misplaced public faith in them — blind faith similar to that once placed in witch doctors and medicine men?

If many justices are merely skilled charlatans distinguished from the latter solely by using far more sophisticated and incomprehensible mumbo jumbo, then what they do is illegitimate, their whole enterprise and institution are illegitimate, and they are not entitled to public trust and respect.

Apple Supplier Foxconn Faces Massive Worker Riot in China

A large-scale incident involving some 2,000 Foxconn Technology Group factory workers has forced the closure of one of the tech supplier’s plants in China, the company confirmed Monday.

The company described the incident as a “personal dispute between several employees” that escalated to include thousands of people. Some 40 people were taken to the hospital, and “a number” of individuals were arrested. According to the statement from Foxconn, local police were in control of the situation by 3 a.m., some four hours after the dispute began.

The incident, which a worker at the scene described as a “riot,” took place in Taiyuan, a city in central China. Foxconn employs 79,000 workers at the facility. Production at the plant has been halted, but Foxconn said in a second statement that the factory will resume activity on Tuesday.

Foxconn, which supplies parts to Apple and other manufacturers, has drawn harsh criticism for its labor policies. A spate of suicides at the company’s factories in 2010 garnered media coverage of alleged harsh working conditions, including unsafe facilities and illegal amounts of overtime.

Suicide Now Surpasses Car Accidents as Leading Cause of Death as Economy Takes its Toll

Suicide is the cause of more deaths than car crashes, according to an alarming new study.

The number of people who commit suicide in the U.S. has drastically increased while deaths from car accidents have dropped, making suicide the leading cause of injury death.

Suicides via falls or poisoning have risen significantly and experts fear that there could be many more unaccounted for, particularly in cases of overdose.

‘Suicides are terribly under-counted,’ said Ian Rockett, author of the study, published on Thursday in the American Journal of Public Health.

‘I think the problem is much worse than official data would lead us to believe. We have a situation that has gotten out of hand.’

Russian DM: “Today, the world begins to unite against the USA”

The media outlet for the Russian government, Pravda, reported this weekend that a Russian observer at the recent APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit in Vladivostok came away convinced that the world is moving away from a U.S. dominated world. He noted that “everyone still plays by American rules, but the countries already demonstrate their independence in economic policy.”

This Member of the Duma, Yevgeny Fyodorov (who also serves as the head of the Duma’s Committee on Economic Policy and Entrepreneurship), said that China’s recent snubbing of Hillary Clinton reflected the United States’ loss of power and prestige: “I was there and saw how angry Mrs. Hillary Clinton was when she came from China, where several Chinese leaders – especially those who are to become top officials of China next year – did not even want to meet her.” He cited China’s refusal to allow Clinton “to take on mediator’s functions in resolving China’s territorial disputes with Asian countries” as further evidence of the US’s precipitous decline.

Observing that the U.S. “consumes a half the world’s GDP, despite the fact that there is only 4.5 percent of the population living there,” and that Americans “eat ten times as much as compared to the citizens of all other countries,” he argues that this excessive consumption occurs “at the expense of China, Russia, India, Brazil – all other countries.”

The Pravda interview concludes with DM Fyodorov stating that, “Today, the world begins to unite against the colonizer – USA.” He believes that the APEC conference is the start of a “national liberation movement to free the world from the U.S. occupation.”

There’s little doubt that the anti-American sentiment that erupted across the Middle East about this same time last week contributed to the atmosphere at the 21-nation APEC summit. And we can thank Obama’s love-fest with the Muslim Brotherhood for that.

Video: Biden’s Wife Makes Accidental X-rated Joke

The Biden’s can’t seem to get away from the gaffes. At a Democratic event, Mrs. Biden makes an apparently accidental, X-rated joke. Any respectable crowd would have let it go, but not this leftist one. Of course, the gaffe-master himself, VP Joe Biden, was encouraging the childish behavior from the background.

Joan Rivers on Romney & Obama: “Both Idiots” (+video)

Joan Rivers, who recently penned I Hate Everyone…Starting With Me, doesn’t generally veer into political territory, but made an exception in an interview that aired on Wednesday’s CNN’s Starting Point — affirming that she does, indeed, hate everyone. Asked about her thoughts about the two presidential candidates, Rivers expressed a cynical outlook, deeming both President Obama and Mitt Romney “idiots.”

Responding to Zoraida Sambolin‘s about how she feels about the two, Rivers promptly replied, “Both idiots.” Read more HERE.

Palin to Romney-Ryan: ‘Go Rogue’

In a statement to THE WEEKLY STANDARD, former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin offers some advice for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, this year’s Republican ticket for president and vice president, respectively.

“With so much at stake in this election, both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan should ‘go rogue’ and not hold back from telling the American people the true state of our economy and national security,” says Palin. “They need to continue to find ways to break through the filter of the liberal media to communicate their message of reform.”

Palin also suggests that Romney and Ryan can be responsible for an epiphany on this country’s fiscal standing. “America desperately needs to have a ‘come to Jesus’ moment in discussing our big dysfunctional, disconnected, and debt-ridden federal government,” says Palin.

“It is nothing short of appalling that President Obama couldn’t even remember how much our national debt is during his interview with David Letterman the other night. Even my 10-year-old daughter knows that it’s $16 trillion, and unlike Obama, she’s not responsible for adding trillions to it. Obama casually told America that we don’t have to worry about our debt in the ‘short term.’ Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan need to ask him how long that ‘short term’ will last.”

Palin adds that Romney and Ryan are being “counted on” to get this right.

State Department attacks ‘disgusting’ CNN for using journal of dead ambassador against family’s wishes (+video)

Government officials have hit out at CNN for reporting on the personal journal of murdered ambassador Chris Stevens, saying they did so against the wishes of his family.

Anderson Cooper revealed on Friday night that the news channel had used the document as a source after finding it inside the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

But a State Department spokesman on Friday claimed that CNN had promised not to mention the journal, and described their U-turn as ‘disgusting’ and ‘indefensible’.

Mr Stevens died alongside three other Americans on September 11 when militant jihadists stormed the consulate in protest against an American-made anti-Muslim video.

CNN found the ambassador’s personal journal four days later, and used it to report on his state of mind during Mr Cooper’s primetime show on Wednesday. Read more from this story HERE.

Common Sense and a breath of fresh air for the Mat-Su

A tiny ray of common sense is peeking out of the court system. The court threw out a lawsuit from Friends of Mat-Su against Usibelli Coal mine. The plaintiffs are miffed and say the problem is all about “constant blasting, coal dust,” “trucking of coal through our community” and “health and safety of thousands of families living near the mine and the transportation route throughout the Mat-Su Valley,” but the real reason for the suit was to shut down coal development. Alaska is one of the richest states in natural resources.

Cook Inlet Keepers have sued to reverse the federal government permit granted the Mat-Su Borough for a rail extension to Point MacKenzie because it “would harm the environment” and is “not needed because Alaska already has three tidewater ports.”

What do these two organizations, Friend of Mat-Su and Cook Inlet Keepers have in common? Mark Masteller.

Mark Masteller is the former chair of the MSB Planning Commission and currently serves as the Alaska Director for Cascadia Green Building Council. He is also a board member of Friends of Mat-Su.

Masteller is now challenging Larry DeVilbiss, our current Mat-Su Borough Mayor for the seat Larry has been doing a fine job at.

While on the Planning Commission, Masteller’s idea of conservative management was to slap heavy regulations on all natural resource development including the timber industry, coal bed methane gas exploration, and local power generation. It seems Masteller has a one track mind: green projects, energy efficient buildings and multiple smaller energy projects. Does anybody remember Solyndra? Masteller’s slogan is “A bright future for the Mat-Su,” but if he imposes more taxes, codes and regulations, the Valley will be one dark cold place.

In January 2011, Larry DeVilbiss, brought a breath of conservative fresh air to the Valley when he won the Mat-Su Borough Mayor seat. Larry brought his extensive experience and common sense as a farmer, School Board member, MEA Board of Directors, Borough Assemblyman, and long time Valley resident to his job as mayor.

Larry wants to develop resources responsibly, knowing that we can use our God-given natural resources wisely and beneficially for businesses and Valley families. Larry opposes government overreach, and California style regulation. Larry’s concern for opportunity for the people of our valley is what drove him to run for mayor just one year ago. Already we are seeing a huge increase in business and job creation with over 750 new business licenses this year alone. And, in the environment of a national recession, with Larry as mayor, over 800 new jobs have been generated in the Borough.

As a businessman, Larry understands the importance of an economy that is local as opposed to remaining a bedroom community. Larry doesn’t rubber stamp big government either. Larry worked to cut the budget, redundant or unnecessary positions and wasteful spending. He also uses integrity and thought about levying the least burdensome taxes for property owners, as well as pushing tasks needed by the Borough out to professionals in the private sector, thereby limiting government and expanding private sector jobs and still providing the services needed for Valley residents, families and businesses.

Mayor Larry DeVilbiss stays connected to the public by giving highlights of Assembly meetings in his podcast, the Mayor’s Minute. Many weighty subjects are addressed and it’s not just a gab session—Important things get accomplished in his interaction with the Borough Assembly. Here are just a few of the ones this last week:

• Approved wided supported Gas LID
• Approved a long-stalled road project in South Big Lake. This project has been desparately needed and in the works for sometime, but was stalled at the State level. Now with the Borough taking over it, by the summer of 2013, Big Lake residents from Jade Lake to Burma Road will enjoy improvements of a straighter, wider road.
• Discussed buyers for Susitna Ferry along with a debate on insurance costs for the M/V Susitna
• The issuance of $13.6 million in the voter-adopted, legislature-blessed road bond projects, just the beginning of the $64 million package. The issuance of bond money is sold in parts, matched by the state for roads, infrastructure and such for Borough wide needs, lessens the impact on the tax rate and also sets a completion date for the projects.
• $23.5 million in legislative grants for the ongoing construction of the Port MacKenzie Rail Extension

Larry’s humor, honesty, thoughtful moral character, and hard work ethic have been a huge asset to not only the Mat-Su Borough, but the entire state. Larry issued the first Mat-Su Borough proclamation in support of the National Day of Prayer. Larry is unequivocally pro-life and is always willing to speak up for the Right to Life. Alaska Right to Life PAC has fully endorsed Larry.

With the help of true conservatives like Mayor DeVilbiss, and newly elected Representative Shelly Hughes and Senator Elect Mike Dunleavy, we will back up government overreach and regulation while creating private sector jobs, opportunities and businesses that will ensure the best future of Valley families.

Chick-fil-A Claims Homosexual Groups Lying That It Agreed to Stop Funding Pro-family Organizations

Chick-fil-A has responded to news reports that it has stopped funding some pro-family groups as a concession to gain approval for a restaurant in Chicago, saying that it has made no concessions in its funding philosophy and, in the words of company president Dan Cathy, remains “true to who we are.”

News reports surfaced September 19 that the company had reached an agreement with Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno, who had vowed to block approval of a restaurant site for the company unless it agreed to stop funding “anti-gay” groups. “Chick-fil-A no longer will fund traditional-marriage groups” the Washington Times headlined its story, and USA Today reported that individuals who had supported Chick-fil-A during the recent attack against it by homosexual activists were now upset that the restaurant chain had “caved in” to gay marriage proponents.

But Cathy set the record straight on September 21, issuing a statement, posted on Mike Huckabee’s website, saying: “There [continue] to be erroneous implications in the media that Chick-fil-A changed our practices and priorities in order to obtain permission for a new restaurant in Chicago. That is incorrect. Chick-fil-A made no such concessions, and we remain true to who we are and who we have been.”

One of the main sources of the report appeared to be a press release from a Chicago-based pro-homosexual group, the Civil Rights Agenda, which stated that Alderman Moreno had “finalized his negotiations with Chick-fil-A,” and had confirmed that the company would “no longer give money to anti-gay organizations.” In July Moreno had said he would block construction of a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his First Ward because of Cathy’s statement of support for traditional marriage. “If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don’t want you in the First Ward,” Moreno said of Cathy’s stand.

As the erroneous news spread that Chick-fil-A had eased up on its support for traditional marriage and pro-family groups such as Focus on the Family, individuals who had taken part in an early August Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day began posting messages on the company’s Facebook page, expressing their disappointment. “I’m disgusted that your faith is so weak,” Baptist Press News quoted one person as posting. “You sure raked in the bucks on Chick-fil-A day, huh? So when do you start opening on Sunday? ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’”
