Obama’s Interior Department Releases Plan to Close 1.6 Million Acres to Shale Oil Development

The Interior Department on Friday issued a final plan to close 1.6 million acres of federal land in the West originally slated for oil shale development.

The proposed plan would fence off a majority of the initial blueprint laid out in the final days of the George W. Bush administration. It faces a 30-day protest period and a 60-day process to ensure it is consistent with local and state policies. After that, the department would render a decision for implementation.

The move is sure to rankle Republicans, who say President Obama’s grip on fossil fuel drilling in federal lands is too tight.

Interior’s Bureau of Land Management cited environmental concerns for the proposed changes. Among other things, it excised lands with “wilderness characteristics” and areas that conflicted with sage grouse habitats.

Marines Egged While Collecting Donations for Toys For Tots

A group of Marines who were collecting donations from early morning commuters on behalf of Toys for Tots in Texas, were hit with a barrage of eggs, according to police.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m., according to San Angelo police. The department received several calls about the occupants of a pickup truck throwing eggs at pedestrians and other vehicles in town.

The pedestrians were four Marines, volunteers for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, who had set up shop at a street corner to collect new Christmas toys to be given to less fortunate children in the community.

The truck almost hit one of the Marines as it sped by — and almost collided head-on with another vehicle — before hitting a traffic island a short while later, according to Lt. Mike Hernandez, a police spokesman.

The driver, Hunter Holbert, 18, was arrested and charged with reckless driving and criminal mischief. Two other 18-year-olds, Brandon Garcia and Taylor White, and an unidentified juvenile male, all passengers in Holbert’s vehicle, were also cited for criminal mischief.

Forget Solyandra Solar! Try a Urine Powered Generator

What have you built lately? 14-year-olds Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, Faleke Oluwatoyin, and 15-year-old Bello Eniola have created a urine powered generator.

Here’s how it works:

•Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which cracks the urea into nitrogen, water, and hydrogen.

•The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.

•The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.

•This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.

•1 Liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity.

If this doesn’t motivate you to go out and start thinking about how you can really make an impact, then I don’t know what will.

A Few Things I Never Want to Hear Again

Tired. That is my overriding sensation as I write this. How to bang one’s first impressions of hell out on a keyboard? Let us begin a new day, in a new world, with a first principle of sorts — in this case, a negative principle. Here is a short list of words or turns of phrase that I never want to hear again.

(1) “America is a center-right country.” Center and right are entirely relative terms. The “center” between Lenin and FDR, for example, is very far to the “left” of George Washington. And political self-identification is a meaningless standard of judgment, even by meaningless current standards.

Many on the “right” are fond of reminding us that only twenty percent of Americans self-identify as “liberals.” I actually heard Brit Hume trying to squeeze this bromide out during the Obama victory post-mortem. But in a nation that embraced a vast social welfare system eighty years ago, and has expanded it continually ever since; a nation that for the past fifty years has moved inexorably towards the locus classicus of socialist egalitarianism, government-controlled health care; a nation that elected and re-elected a man who has openly self-identified as a progressive and advocated wealth-redistribution; and a nation in which the popular culture is dominated by artless harlots, pimps, and gangsters, a “centrist” is a person who embraces social disintegration and authoritarianism. To be “moderately conservative” in such a milieu simply means that one finds the latest music video about teenage lesbian orgies just a little over the top.

America is not a center-right country, whatever that means. It is — notwithstanding its still-sane minority (which includes almost everyone reading this) — a socialist-leaning nation that lags behind the rest of the progressive world only due to a slight residual guilt complex regarding all that old Constitution stuff. The events of the past couple of days suggest that even that little bugaboo has now been largely overcome by the majority, for whom most inhibitions about accepting their chains — and chaining their neighbors — are now gone.

(2) “Mitt Romney was only the nominee because of a thin primary field.” Phooey. He was the nominee because the entire GOP establishment threw everything it had at all the other candidates, in order to guarantee that it would get the candidate most likely to succumb to their advice and direction. As of September 2012, Romney was the only candidate left in the primary field whom no one had ever described as a conservative, let alone a constitutionalist. That, in short, is why he was the nominee.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in Talks Over Plea Agreement, Still in Hospital, Overwhelmingly Wins Reelection

Attorneys for the Justice Department and Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. are in talks about a possible deal regarding allegations of campaign finance violations, according to sources familiar with the investigation. Negotiations have been under way for some time.

It is unclear whether the talks will result in a plea agreement, but sources say the talks could come to some conclusion soon.

Part of the investigation’s focus is on whether Jackson improperly used campaign funds for personal purchases, including furnishings for his Washington, D.C., home. Investigators are also looking at allegations that Jackson bought a female friend a $40,000 Rolex watch. The investigation is being run by the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

Representative Jackson’s office said he is currently receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic – his second prolonged stay there since being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. He is refraining from any official duties until he is given a clean bill of health by his doctors.

The Chicago congressman coasted to victory in Tuesday’s election, keeping a seat he first won in a special election in 1995. Jackson won re-election despite having virtually no presence on the campaign trail. A robo-call to constituents describing his recent health troubles and thanking supporters for their “patience, your prayers … during this difficult time” appears to be the only evidence of Jackson’s campaigning at all.

Chris Christie Telephones Obama to Congratulate Him, But Emails Condolences to Romney

[Editor’s Note: Chris Christie lashed out over the media’s report that he had called Obama. Christie claims that is was, in fact, Obama who called him.] New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that he had called President Obama to congratulate him on his win in the 2012 presidential election — but has only sent an email to Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee for whom he campaigned heavily earlier this year.

“We didn’t have a political strategy discussion,” Christie said of his call to Obama, according to Bloomberg. “I said congratulations on your win last night Mr. President, he said thank you governor.”

Christie added that he had sent an email to Romney on Wednesday night.

“We haven’t spoken on the phone yet,” he continued.

Father Rapes, Impregnates Daughter, Gets One Year in Jail

A woman who was repeatedly raped by her father and gave birth to her own brother has hit out after her attacker was only jailed for a year.

Tiara Stevens said on Monday she had waited 14 years for justice only to see her father’s sentence as a ‘slap in the face.’

An outraged Tiara said: ‘To wait 14 years and all a person gets is one year?

‘A pat on the back, telling them it’s okay to molest your daughter, impregnate her, and for her to have a child, a blind child? It’s ok?’

Fred Montgomery, 47, had pleaded guilty to criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He was sentenced on Monday to 15 years in jail, but all but one year was suspended.

Tiara was just 12 years old when she was impregnated by her father at the trailer home they shared.

Video: Children Bullying, Assaulting Public School Teacher Caught on Camera

The video uploaded to YouTube is of an incident two weeks ago. It is obviously recorded on a phone by a student in a classroom; Baltimore City Schools confirms it is from Digital Harbor High School in Federal Hill.

You can watch as the female student flicks at and taunts the substitute teacher at the front of the room.

Then you can see the teacher dodging something that comes at her…all to the giggles and laughter of the rest of the class.

“My initial response was again, disgust.”

Marietta English is the head of the teachers union in Baltimore city.

She’s seen the video and says it happens more often than you think.

“Respect for adults. Somewhere there’s just, no civility. They don’t even respect the adults in the classroom who are trying to deliver a lesson and this is the battle we fight,” said English. Read more from this story HERE.

7 SEAL’s Punished For Disclosing Information Used in Medal of Honor Video Game

Seven members of the secretive Navy SEAL Team 6, including one involved in the mission to get Osama bin Laden, have been punished for disclosing classified information, senior Navy officials said Thursday.

Four other SEALs are under investigation for similar alleged violations, one official said.

They allegedly divulged classified information to the creator of the video game ‘Medal of Honor: Warfighter.’

Each of the seven received a punitive letter of reprimand- which generally prevents individuals from being promoted- and a partial forfeiture of pay for two months.

The deputy commander of Naval Special Warfare Command, Rear Admiral Garry Bonelli, issued a statement acknowledging that nonjudicial punishments had been handed out for misconduct, but he did not offer any details.

‘We do not tolerate deviations from the policies that govern who we are and what we do as sailors in the United States Navy,’ Bonelli said.
