Democratic Opponent Says Special Forces Colonel “Not Qualified” for Congress

A retired Army colonel who served with the elite Special Forces — and who is now running for Congress — is being accused by his Democratic congressional opponent of being unqualified to serve in Congress.

Chris Perkins is running for the 11th congressional seat in Virginia, which encompasses the Washington, DC, suburbs and a large constituency of federal government employees. Perkins served most of his 24 years in uniform as an Army Green Beret overseas.

But incumbent Democrat Gerry Connolly recently told The Washington Post, which has endorsed his candidacy, that Perkins’ military service makes him unqualified to hold federal office because he has not been civically engaged in the 11th District.

In response, Perkins says Connolly has been bragging about his career in government.

Report: New Jersey Senator Up for Reelection Tied to Dominican Prostitutes

By Matthew Boyle. Two women from the Dominican Republic told The Daily Caller that Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez paid them for sex earlier this year.

In interviews, the two women said they met Menendez around Easter at Casa de Campo, an expensive 7,000 acre resort in the Dominican Republic. They claimed Menendez agreed to pay them $500 for sex acts, but in the end they each received only $100.

The women spoke through a translator in the company of their attorney, Melanio Figueroa. Both asked that their identities remain obscured for fear of reprisals in the Dominican Republic.

When shown a photograph of Sen. Menendez, the women said they recognized him as the man with whom they’d had sexual relations at Casa de Campo this spring. Both said they were brought to the resort with the understanding they would be paid for sex.

Neither knew the identity of the man at the time. Both claimed to recognize him later as Sen. Menendez. Read more from this story HERE.

Dailykos Response to “Possible” Menendez Scandal

By Coolelegans. Apparently there is a rumor flying around that Sen. Menendez hired prostitutes while touring the Caribbean and it’s being pushed on Drudge. I have a few things to say about this. First of all it’s by the guy Tucker Carlson who got his *ss kicked by Jon Stewart and no longer has a job. He is desperate to hype up some breaking news because he is irrelevant, so I would take this news with a grain of salt. But, at the same time, I wouldn’t discount it completely, because they were right about Anthony Weiner before.

In either case, this whole thing is stupid. First of all, Menendez is crushing his opposition right now, and things aren’t going to move too much in a few days. Second, New Jersians right now care about what their politicians do for them, and Obama and co. are showing how good they are at handling the storm. Third, I don’t even think Menendez is married, Wikipedia says that he is divorced. So, basically conservatives are accusing Menendez of being attracted to women. Whoop-de-doo. As long as he didn’t use tax payer money for his trysts- who cares. Read more from this story HERE.

Pilot Advisory: Volcanic Ash Over Kodiak, Alaska, But It’s 100 Years Old

Photo credit: National Park ServiceAlaska Public Radio reported last night that

There was volcanic ash in the air over the Shelikof Straight and parts of Kodiak Island yesterday. A person in Port Lions called KMXT to ask if a volcano had erupted, but the Alaska Volcano Observatory showed all was normal. However, it turned out that a volcano had erupted, though it wasn’t yesterday – it was almost exactly 100 years ago.

The National Weather Service office in Anchorage reported that ash from the Novarupta explosion in 1912 was being whipped up by strong northerly winds because of a lack of snow cover in the Valley of 10,000 Smokes and Katmai National Park on the Alaska Peninsula.

Fox News added that

The ash drifted up to about 4,000 feet and traveled over the Shelikof Strait and across Kodiak Island, prompting an aviation alert. The news was first reported by KMXT radio.

Weather service meteorologist Brian Hagenbuch said it isn’t unheard of for ash from Novarupta to create a haze, but it isn’t very common either. Winds in the area were blowing about 35 to 40 mph, with gusts of more than 52 mph.

Officials first picked up the haze on a weather camera Tuesday when the sun was rising. “It looked very foggy. … It was kind of a curious thing,” Hagenbuch said. “We didn’t expect fog there.”

As the day got lighter, the haze took on a “brownish, smog-type look,” he said.

A satellite image showed a “milky white plume” spreading out from the northern Alaska peninsula, and authorities later confirmed the existence of ash particles, he said.

The Katmai National Park website describes the “famed Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes,” the area from where the ash was blown, as

a spectacular forty square mile, 100 to 700 foot deep ash flow deposited by Novarupta Volcano in 1912. A National Park & Preserve since 1980, today Katmai is still famous for volcanoes, but also for brown bears, pristine waterways with abundant fish, remote wilderness, and a rugged coastline.
