FBI Warns of 'Unintended Consequences' from Media's False Reports on Boston Marathon Bombing

After a number of media outlets mistakenly reported that an arrest had been made in the Boston Marathon Bombing, the Federal Bureau of Investigation posted a news release on its website warning of “unintended consequences” from false press reports.

FBI Special Agent Greg Comcowich stated that, “Contrary to widespread reporting, no arrest has been made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack.”

The agent also noted that, “Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate.”

He then warned that “these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting.”

Mr. Comcowich did not explain what he meant by “unintended consequences.”
