IRS Will Monitor 99 Churches on Behalf of Freedom From Religion Foundation to Avoid Another Lawsuit

0 (91)Here’s some funny business (and not the ‘haha’ kind) going on between the IRS and the Freedom From Religion Foundation. After the IRS presented a letter to the Justice Department that states 99 churches “merit high priority for examination,” the FFRF dropped their lawsuit against them.

The IRS also held private talks with the FFRF, purportedly, to assure them that the monitoring of churches will definitely happen.

Justice Department attorney, J. Christian Adams, explains on Fox News:

“They want them to convert theology to political. They want them to convert them to politics and say, “hey that’s not theology that’s political and you shouldn’t be talking like that.” And they wan to use the IRS as a weapon against christianity, against faith.”

Israel Says Ground Troops Out of Gaza as Cease-Fire Takes Effect

By Fox News.

The Israeli military has said that all of its ground forces have been removed from Gaza as a 72-hour cease-fire went into effect Tuesday.

The truce, agreed upon Monday by Israel and Hamas, took effect at 8 a.m. local time Tuesday (1 a.m. Eastern Time). The Times of Israel reported that a barrage of rockets were fired from Gaza minutes before the cease-fire was due to take effect. The paper also reported that Israeli’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted two rockets over central Israel, while two other rockets fell into open areas in southern Israel near the Gaza border, causing no damage or injuries.

There were also signs of tensions created by the Gaza fighting spreading to Jerusalem and the West Bank, including two attacks police say were carried out by Palestinian militants.

Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner told The Associated Press that the withdrawal would go forward after forces completed the destruction of the last of the 32 known tunnels used by Hamas militants to cross between Gaza and Israel to carry out attacks on soldiers and civilians.

Why Jon Voight is speaking out on Gaza and Hollywood activism

By Max Schindler.

Hollywood celebrities on both sides of the political aisle are alternately supporting – and condemning – Israel’s month-long military operation in the Gaza Strip as the death toll climbs to more than 1,700 Palestinian and 67 Israeli casualties.

Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight is the latest to jump into the verbal fray. But the Middle East conflict has already heard from movie actors, radio jockeys, musicians and music producers. If there were a scorecard, it would be tilted toward public sympathy with the Palestinians.

Last week, Spanish actors Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, along with Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, denounced Israel’s aerial campaign in an open letter to a Spanish newspaper, calling for the European Union “to condemn the bombing by land, sea and air against the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip,” adding:

“Gaza is living through horror these days, besieged and attacked by land, sea and air. Palestinians’ homes are being destroyed, they are being denied water, electricity [and] free movement to their hospitals, schools and fields while the international community does nothing.”

Their letter was “one of the most strident messages from any global cultural figure regarding the current conflict,” reported The Guardian, and their comments provoked a fierce backlash from a number of other celebrities.

Obama's Greatest Flaw, America's Greatest Cost

I’m not a psychologist, but I’m intrigued by the work of those who study the mind and behavior, especially when it accurately explains why people do what they do — or can’t do what they would like or are expected to do. Case in point, President Barack Obama.

In 2008, I wrote a column titled “A Personality Profile of Barack Obama’s Leadership.” The warnings of mental health professionals then have come to fruition today. And other brain and personality experts, many of whom cast their votes for Obama at the ballot box, have since learned the nation appointed a man to the highest position in the land who cannot lead in or out of crisis, especially in the face of opposing forces.

Six years ago, I pointed to the research of the Unit for the Study of Personality in Politics, at St. John’s University and the College of St. Benedict, which did a professional personality profile “for anticipating Obama’s likely leadership style as chief executive, thereby providing a basis for inferring the character and tenor of a prospective Obama presidency.” The study concluded: “The combination of Ambitious, Accommodating, and Outgoing patterns in Obama’s profile suggests a confident conciliator personality composite. Leaders with this personality prototype, though self-assured and ambitious, are characteristically gracious, considerate, and benevolent. They are energetic, charming, and agreeable, with a special knack for settling differences, favoring mediation and compromise over force or coercion as a strategy for resolving conflict. They are driven primarily by a need for achievement and also have strong affiliation needs, but a low need for power.”

Comedian Jimmy Fallon: Abortion Can Be “Lighthearted” and “Funny”

jimmyfallonBy Katie Yoder.

Comedians can find the humor in anything, right? Or so Jimmy Fallon seems to think.

Comedian Jimmy Fallon invited the “very talented actress” Jenny Slate (“SNL,” “Parks and Recreation”) on “The Tonight Show” August 1. During her appearance, Fallon applauded Slate’s recent role in the media-dubbed “abortion romantic comedy,” “Obvious Child.”

Fallon explained, “It’s getting great reviews because it’s a serious issue, but you make it lighthearted, you make it funny.” “Good for you,” he added. Continued after video.

Couple Takes Heartbreaking Photos With Their Stillborn Daughter to Remember Her

By Steven Ertelt.

A California couple decided to remember their stillborn daughter by hiring a professional photographer to take special pictures of them with her so they would have a touching memorial to remember her by. Richard and Emily Staley wanted a way to mark their daughter Monroe’s place in their family even though she was dead at birth.

So they hired Lindsey Natzic-Villatoro, who typically takes happy photographs of weddings or family pictures.

Here is what the couple had to say, along with a couple of the pictures Lindsey took:

‘I wanted our family to have some way to show how beautiful our daughter was,’ Emily Staley, 26, told Yahoo Health.

‘I was proud of her, and I wanted to show her off and make sure her memory lives on.’

Muslim Brotherhood Leader: Mothers Must Nurse their Children on Hatred (+video)

0 (89)If you want to understand the Islamic totalitarian and jihadist mentality, it’s best to simply allow them to express themselves in their own words. Hat tip to Itamar Marcus over at the Palestine Media Watch for bringing us the infamous leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Kuwait, Tareq Al-Suwaidan. This video aired on Al Aqsa TV (Hamas) this past Friday, August 1st.

You see, that is the Muslim holy day and this is their version of “tele-evangelism” — and the Left finds Pastor Hagee out of San Antonio Texas reprehensible and wants to shut him down. Do any of you think the Freedom from Religion Foundation would have the IRS crack down on a sermon like this?

So, quite simply, how does one fight against an enemy that embraces death? Well, it is simple: grant them their wish. Because yes, we in the West — especially Israel and America, do see life as precious — well, perhaps not these radical abortionist Leftists — and we will fight to preserve life.

Nixon Is Gone, but His Media Strategy Lives On

Richard Nixon left the White House in disgrace 40 years ago this month, but the war he launched against journalists has continued under Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and other recent presidents.

Nixon’s resignation is remembered as a great victory for the media. Investigations by Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, and other reporters helped expose the White House crime spree that caused the president’s downfall. Even though he lost his battle to remain in power, Nixon’s way of handling the press has prevailed in American politics. Intimidating journalists, avoiding White House reporters, staging events for television—now common presidential practices—were all originally Nixonian tactics.

Nixon would enjoy the frustration many reporters feel toward the Obama White House. This summer 38 news organizations sent Obama a letter protesting his administration’s obstruction of journalists. The news groups complained of officials blackballing reporters, delaying interviews until after deadlines had passed, and preventing staff experts from talking with journalists. For example, they said the Environmental Protection Agency refused to answer questions about the mishandling of hazardous waste despite repeated requests from reporters.

Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, repeated many of Nixon’s arguments—protecting national security and executive privilege—to keep information about his administration secret. Bush bluntly told reporters he did not think they represented the public, echoing the adversarial relationship cultivated by Nixon.

Stop the Coming Obamnesty!

By Pat Buchanan.

According to Rep. Luis Gutierrez, Obama intends “to act broadly and generously” on behalf of the “millions and millions” of illegal immigrants in the United States today.

Gutierrez, who meets often with the president, is implying that Obama, before Labor Day and by executive order, will grant de facto amnesty to five million illegal immigrants.

They will be granted work permits and permission to stay. With his pen and his phone, Obama will do what Congress has refused to do.

There is a precedent. Obama has already issued one executive order deferring the deportation of “dreamers,” children brought into the United States illegally by their parents before 2007.

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions is on to what is afoot. “We must prevent the president’s massive amnesty from going forward,” he says, and urges legislation to block an executive amnesty. But this divided Congress is not going to pass any such law. Nor would Obama sign it.

Rep. King Reignites Impeachment Debate, White House Unconvinced House has Dropped the Issue

By Fox News.

Iowa GOP Rep. Steve King reignited the debate Sunday about the Republican-led House considering impeachment proceedings for President Obama, just days after party leaders furiously tried to extinguish such talk.

King suggested on “Fox News Sunday” that the impeachment issue could be reconsidered if Obama again uses his executive powers to delay or defer deportation for illegal immigrants beyond those brought illegally to the United States in past years by their parents.

“I think then we have to start, sit down and take a look at that,” King said.

Political observers have suggested Obama will expand his 2012 executive memo on deportation to include the surge of illegal Central American youths because Congress on Friday went on a five-week summer recess without passing legislation to help fix the crisis.

The GOP-led House passed legislation, but the Democrat-led Senate did not.

Did Rubio’s immigration flip-flop rehabilitate his image among Republicans?

By Noah Rothman.

Once a strong 2016 contender, Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) stock among conservatives dropped significantly after he helped to craft the Senate’s immigration reform bill.

Preliminary 2016 polling, which had shown Rubio at the top of the prospective GOP pack in late 2012 and early 2013, revealed his standing among conservatives had collapsed by the beginning of this year. Some analysts indicated that Rubio would ultimately recover from his immigration reform-induced collapse in the polls – his likely 2016 GOP opponents are not well positioned to attack the Florida senator from the right on immigration issues – but it would be months before Rubio would have the chance to rehabilitate his image with conservatives.

But the crisis on the southern border has provided Rubio with an opportunity to create some distance from his own immigration reform bill and to adopt a more hawkish stance on border security. Rubio has made the most of that opportunity, and it seems to be bearing fruit.

A recent Quinnipiac survey of the 2016 landscape in Florida found Rubio rebounding significantly among conservative voters in that critical Super Tuesday state. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who had been consistently trouncing his potential GOP opponents in his home state, has slid significantly among Republican primary voters. An April Quinnipiac poll found Rubio trailing both Bush and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). By July, however, Rubio had regained standing among Florida Republicans and is now statistically tied with Bush, at 18 and 21 percent support respectively, in the race for the GOP nomination in Florida.

Rubio’s penance on immigration reform is, however, coming at a price. While Rubio’s stock among conservatives is on the rise, standing in the media is falling proportionally.

Democrat Finds Something Sweet To Tax While Reminding Us What Freedom Doesn’t Look Like

By Kevin Boyd.

Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-Connecticut) has found another revenue stream for the federal government: sugar-sweetened soft drinks. Whether you call it pop, soda or coke, DeLauro wants to impose a 1 cent excise tax per teaspoon of caloric sweetener (either sugar or corn syrup) used in sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, and sweet teas.

Elizabeth Harrington of the Washington Free Beacon writes that DeLauro has gained the support of activists who banned smoking indoors and other health advocates who called sodas “toxic.” The goal is to reduce soda consumption in the country.

From the Free Beacon:

DeLauro introduced the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax Act, also known as the “SWEET Act,” on Wednesday, which would impose a 1 cent excise tax per teaspoon of caloric sweetener in soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, and sweet teas.

Rep. DeLauro: Tax Every Teaspoon of Sugar

By Eric Scheiner.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) introduced this week the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax (SWEET Act), which aims to institute a tax of one cent per teaspoon – 4.2 grams – of sugar, high fructose corn syrup or caloric sweetener.

The measure (HB 5279), introduced Wednesday says, “A 20-ounce bottle of soda contains about 16 teaspoons of sugars. Yet, the American Heart Association recommends that Americans consume no more than six to nine teaspoons of sugar per day.”

Even though the manufacturers’ of the sweet drinks are targeted to pay the tax, the text of the bill itself notes that the goal is to reduce public consumption through a price increase.
