Gen. Raymond Odierno, who is leaving his post, estimated that only a third of U.S. brigades are capable of operating at the level of the hybrid warfare Russia is undertaking there. And he worries that Russia could next intervene in NATO allies like Latvia or Estonia.

Russian troops have launched some of their heaviest artillery attacks on the Ukrainian forces’ positions in six months.

According to recent reports, a Michigan father has come out on top following a legal battle he said began when he was denied access to his daughter’s elementary school.
Kenneth Herman took his local school district to court after repeated efforts to enter the school while openly carrying his handgun in compliance with local law. The issue, he was told, centered around the school’s designation as a gun-free zone.
“I think schools being gun-free zones is not a wise idea,” he explained to reporters. “I think having law-abiding armed citizens in there provides some measure of protection that isn’t a glass door that can be broken out.”
The district argued that the policy exists to promote the “safety and protection of students,” though its defense did not hold up under Circuit Judge Archie Hayman’s scrutiny.
Citing state law that permits legal concealed carry on public school campuses, Hayman ruled in Herman’s favor.
Michigan Open Carry, which provided legal representation in the case, released a statement applauding the ruling, noting the speed with which it was decided suggested it was “clearly an easy decision” for Hayman. According to CNBC, a smaller blast, the equivalent 3 tons of TNT, triggered a larger one equaling approximately 20 tons, shaking the port city of Tianjin.
China’s “Xinhua news agency said a fire started by the explosion was ‘under control’ but said two firefighters were missing. Shockwaves from the blast could apparently be felt several kilometres away from Tianjin,” the BBC reports.
“At the time of the explosion the ground was shaking fiercely, nearby cars and buildings were shaking, a few buildings’ glass all broke and everyone started to run,” Ms. Yang, an eyewitness, told local media.

Liu Yue, a 25-year-old Tianjin resident, said she felt the first blast but didn’t think too much of it.
“The second explosion was so powerful that I felt the entire 16-floor-building was shaking,” said Liu, who lives about 4 kilometers (2½ miles) from the site of the blasts. “I thought it was an earthquake! I was extremely scared. I was afraid my family was in danger.”
The initial explosion erupted at a warehouse for a logistics company in an industrial area of the port city, according to Tianjin police. The company was identified as Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics Co. Ltd.

The portion of the federal debt that is subject to a legal limit set by Congress closed Monday, August 10, at $18,112,975,000,000, according to the latest Daily Treasury Statement, which was published at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
That, according to the Treasury’s statements, makes 150 straight days the debt subject to the limit has been frozen at $18,112,975,000,000 . . .
On July 30, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew sent a letter to the leaders of Congress informing them that he was extending a “debt issuance suspension period” through October 30.
In practice, that means that unless Congress enacts new legislation to increase the limit on the federal debt before then, the Treasury will continue for at least the next eleven weeks to issue Daily Treasury Statements that show the federal debt subject to the limit beginning and ending each day frozen just below that limit.
The Daily Treasury Statement for March 13 was the first to show the debt subject to the limit closing the day at $18,112,975,000,000. Every Daily Treasury Statement since then has reported the same thing: the debt closing the day at $18,112,975,000,000. Margaret Sanger, a founder of Planned Parenthood, wrote in her autobiography that an abortion at any stage is the taking of a human life.
“To each group we explained simply what contraception was; that abortion was the wrong way—no matter how early it was performed it was taking life,” wrote Sanger.
Planned Parenthood, which is now the leading abortion provider in America, will this week give House Minority Nancy Pelosi, its Margaret Sanger Award. Planned Parenthood says Pelosi has earned the honor through her “leadership, excellence, and outstanding contributions to the reproductive health and rights movement over the course of her career.”
According to its website, Planned Parenthood traces its origins to 1916 when Sanger opened a birth control office in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1922, she incorporated the American Birth Control League to address issues such as “world population growth, disarmament, and world famine,” and in 1923, Sanger opened the Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau in Manhattan to provide contraceptives to women . . .
Margaret Sanger (1879-1966), in an essay written in 1931, sought to distinguish between contraceptive measures that prevent a sperm from fertilizing a woman’s egg and post-conception measures that would destroy a fertilized egg, an embryo. She wrote the article in response to then-Pope Pius XI’s encyclical letter Casti Connubii, or Chaste Wedlock, issued on Dec. 31, 1930. Donald Trump has laid down the gauntlet to Black Lives Matter and it looks like they are picking it up.
During a news conference Tuesday in Michigan, the 2016 Republican presidential front-runner called Democrat presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders “weak” and a “disgrace” for allowing two Black Lives Matter protesters to take his microphone from him at an event last week. He vowed that such a thing would never happen to him.
“I felt badly for him, but it showed that he’s weak,” Trump told reporters. “He’s getting the biggest crowds, and I’m getting the biggest crowds. We’re the two getting the crowds. But believe me, that’s not gonna happen to Trump” . . .
It didn’t take long for the troublemakers of the Black Lives Matter brigade to take to social media and accept the challenge.

According to Gallup, nearly one quarter of Hispanics do not favor a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
The Gallup poll, conducted June 15-July 10, is the latest update from Gallup’s 2015 Minority Rights and Relations poll and includes larger samples of blacks and Hispanics. “The 2006 survey was the last time Gallup asked the question in a poll that included an expanded sample of Hispanics. Whites’ and blacks’ views are largely unchanged since then” . . .
The more recent poll, however, suggests more than a slight drop. Now seventy seven percent (77%) of Hispanics, “about half of whom are immigrants themselves,” are more likely to favor a path to citizenship for immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally . . .

The U.S. government has warned states moving to defund women’s health group Planned Parenthood that they may be in conflict with federal law, officials said on Wednesday.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a federal agency, was in contact with officials in Louisiana and Alabama this month, said a spokesperson for the agency’s parent, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The agency warned those two states that their plans to terminate Medicaid provider agreements with Planned Parenthood may illegally restrict beneficiary access to services, the spokesperson said in a statement.
Planned Parenthood has been at the center of a national debate since the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress last month began releasing undercover videos showing doctors discussing the sale of fetal body parts.
Federal law requires state Medicaid programs to cover family-planning services and supplies for anyone of child-bearing age. Ending the agreements with Planned Parenthood would limit beneficiaries’ access to care and services from qualified providers of their choice, according to HHS.
