Rank-and-file GOP House members are now confronted with an important question: do they want to head into a presidential election with a leader who is unpopular with their own voters and hated by Independents?
Gallup released a poll today showing that just 23% of Americans view Speaker John Boehner favorably. A clear majority have an unfavorable view of him.
What is more revealing is that Boehner is under water in terms of approval with his own party.
Just 37% of Republicans have a favorable view of the Speaker, while 42% view him unfavorably. His numbers are atrocious among Independents – 17%-57%. Gallup notes that McConnell is also unusually unpopular with his own party. His only saving grace is that so many people have never heard of him. However, as witnessed by the spontaneous applause at the GOP debate when Sen. Ted Cruz called him a liar, the more Republicans know about him the more they dislike him.
When was the last time sitting GOP congressional leaders were this unpopular with their own party? When Gallup asked the same question about then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi in October 2010, although she was also very unpopular overall, only 22% of Democrats viewed her unfavorably compared to 42% of Republicans souring on Boehner this year.
Why are Republicans so dispirited about their leaders? What about Independents? Is it because they are too conservative and too aggressive in opposing Obama’s agenda? Clearly not. As indicated by the recent Pew poll, this Congress is rated much lower than the Gingrich-era Congress, even though the ’95 Republicans were more spirited in pushing a bold agenda against a more popular and less radical Democrat president.
Had this dynamic unfolded anywhere in the private sector, the corporate board would have fired a CEO like John Boehner long ago. Sadly, in the public sector, and particularly in the Republican Party, failure often seems to be a resume enhancer.
Those House conservatives who are reticent about the effort to fire Boehner are not only responsible for the devastating Obama policies that will go unchecked, they must now contend with the reality of losing the White House because of unpopular leadership. Two top aides to Hillary Clinton gave assurances to a federal judge Wednesday that they will not delete any emails or other records related to their work at the State Department during Clinton’s tenure as America’s top diplomat.
Lawyers for former Clinton Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills and Deputy Chief of Staff Huma Abedin told the State Department they would abide by U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan’s request that they not erase any copies of federal records in their possession.
In addition, Clinton lawyer David Kendall confirmed that a Colorado technology firm on Wednesday turned over to the Justice Department the private server which housed Clinton’s emails while she served as secretary of state. He also said he’d produced three thumb drives with Clinton’s digital copies of emails she gave State in paper form last December.
“We have voluntarily provided to the Department of Justice on August 6, 2015, the .pst file containing electronic copies of the 55,000 pages of emails on a thumb drive (along with two copies), which had been securely stored in my possession, after receiving from the Department of Justice an assurance that it would maintain this file in an appropriately secure manner and the Department’s opinion that such maintenance would satisfy any preservation obligations I am under,” Kendall wrote Wednesday to Undersecretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy.
“Similarly, Platte River Networks is today providing to the Department of Justice the server and related equipment on which emails to and from Secretary Clinton’s clintonemail.com were stored from 2009-2013 and which PRN took possession of in 2013,” Kendall added. “This is following the Department of Justice’s assurances to us and to counsel for PRN that it would maintain this equipment in an appropriately secure manner.” (Read more from “Clinton Aides Vow Not to Destroy Emails” HERE)
Forget joysticks and exoskeletons, the future of warfare could see robot armies controlled using just a commander’s mind.
China has been training students at a military academy to use headsets that detect and interpret the brain activity of the wearer, allowing them to control the machines.
At a demonstration at the People’s Liberation Army Information Engineering University in Zhengzhou, students used the device to send robots trundling in different directions . . .
The technology uses a brain computer interface known as a electroencephalograph, which uses electrodes embedded in a cap to detect tiny changes in the electrical activity of the brain.
By training a computer to recognize particular patterns that accompany commands, such as turn left or turn right, this can be then transmitted to control the robot. (Read more from “Rise of the Brain-Controlled Robot ARMIES: Chinese Military Trains Students to Control Machines by Doing This” HERE)

No one can deny the explosive impact of the Planned Parenthood videos painstakingly obtained over three years of undercover reporting by the Center for Medical Progress. A GOP that had shoved the abortion issue to the political back burner has suddenly seen it boiling over, with major Republican candidates (such as Marco Rubio) now speaking loudly about the “barbarism” of “murdering babies.”
As Jason Jones and I wrote here last week, if you tune out the Trump-induced static at the last Republican debate, you will hear one message loud and clear: The Republican party has committed itself to advancing protection for unborn children, to extending legal rights to one class after another of vulnerable unborn Americans as it becomes politically feasible, and slashing the funding of the organ-profiteering eugenics organization Planned Parenthood that targets the urban, black poor for abortions. The only openly pro-choice Republican candidate, George Pataki, barely registers in the polls. Donald Trump has been forced to claim a pro-life “conversion,” though he wants to use cheap accounting tricks to keep on subsidizing inner-city abortions, earning him the sobriquet “Planned Parenthood’s favorite Republican.”
You can read on left-wing sites like The Daily Beast anguished testimonies such as “I Don’t Know if I’m Pro-Choice After Planned Parenthood Videos.” You can see fear begin to edge out the arrogance on the face of pro-abortion candidates such as Hillary Clinton, as they double down on their support for Planned Parenthood, and refuse to watch the videos.
What’s the last thing you’d expect right now? That putative pro-lifers would start condemning all this evidence of moral advancement, claiming that the Center for Medical Progress used evil means to uncover the truth about Planned Parenthood — so evil that Christians should denounce the CMP for employing them, so sinister that these videos themselves will backfire and discredit the pro-life movement. Because, you see, the CMP’s investigators told Planned Parenthood employees things that weren’t true. And that is evil. By this logic, the Planned Parenthood videos are the fruit of a poison tree, and should not even be made public or shared. Like Nazi doctor Josef Mengele’s experimental results, or sins we overheard in someone else’s confession, we should shun them and keep them secret.
Catholic writer Mark Shea is leading the charge against Planned Parenthood’s critics. On July 21, Shea condemned the Center for Medical Progress in an online Catholic radio broadcast, where he also said that families sheltering Jews during the Holocaust would have sinned by deceiving the Nazis who hunted those Jews. At 35:30 he quipped, “The issue is not and never has been figuring out how to lie well; the issue is figuring out how to hide your Jews well.” Then he chortled heartily.
Curiously, Shea has no previous track record of condemning the use of deception by police trapping pedophiles, CIA operatives fighting terrorism, or animal rights activists infiltrating factory farms. But over several years, Shea has spilled tens of thousands of words denouncing pro-life investigative reporters who infiltrated Planned Parenthood, even alleging that these pro-lifers had endangered their immortal souls by “tempting” professional abortionists into sin. You see, the prolife investigators of Live Action, including Lila Rose, showed up at abortion clinics and made fake appointments, trying to see if the clinics were willing to violate relevant laws. According to Shea, Rose was playing the evil temptress by doing that, urging someone to sin … because they intended to give her an abortion, so they sinned as gravely as a murderer who shoots but misses. She “tempted” them to do that, so she is just as guilty. Really?
Clearly Shea doesn’t understand the difference between entrapment and legitimate undercover work. If someone is already in the business of habitual acts of evil, presenting him an opportunity to express that fixed intention in order to stop him is not considered entrapment under law. Nor is it a sin. By Shea’s logic, if a sniper were picking off pedestrians, police who shoved out a mannequin to draw away his fire would be “tempting” him to murder, since he intended to shoot a real person. To say that such policemen were guilty of “incitement to murder” would not just be false; it would be slander.
Such absurdities aside, let’s examine the question that deserves our serious scrutiny, which is echoed by serious thinkers, such as philosopher Christopher Tollefsen: To win the trust of the abortionists and obtain the video evidence of their human organ trafficking, the investigators from the Center for Medical Progress “lied.” And that’s always evil.
Or is it? Not every killing is murder. Is every verbal deception a sinful “lie”? That’s the only real question here, and it’s one that has vexed Christian thinkers since almost the beginning. There isn’t space here to review 2,000 years of theological debate, and in any case we can’t resolve this natural law question that bears on public policy affecting non-Christians as well as Christians by an easy appeal to authority. We must each use our reason to consider this question seriously and come to honest conclusions whose implications we’re willing to live with. An argument that yields ludicrous conclusions has got a flaw in it somewhere, usually way back in its unexamined premises.
Means and Ends
Any principled person will admit that the end does not justify the means. Not if the means is something intrinsically, that is, under every imaginable circumstance and by its very nature, evil. To clarify the point, let’s choose an extreme example. If it would have beaten Hitler sooner and stopped the Holocaust, should the Allies have been willing to recruit French and Belgian children as suicide bombers? No, because using children as weapons of war is evil, the same kind of evil as the Nazis were committing. You can’t use a “little” bit of real evil to fight for the good, a point which lay at the heart of The Lord of the Rings. The One Ring could serve as an allegory of any truly evil means, which corrupts the user. Some argue that Allied bombings of Axis cities from Dresden to Nagasaki was an intrinsically evil means, since it targeted civilians. In fact, I agree.
But the end can reveal an error in the chosen means. Keeping your hands clean and your conscience perfectly shiny is no excuse for letting the real world go to hell, or allowing the vulnerable to suffer at the hands of the utterly ruthless. When Gandhi advised Europe’s Jews (and also the Allies) to resist the Nazis by exclusively non-violent means, he played the role of a callous purist — as George Orwell pointed out.
While an individual choice for non-violence might be noble, universal pacifism is not merely quixotic and self-indulgent. It is actively sinful. It empowers the killers, thugs and rapists of this fallen world by disarming the forces of justice. When only your personal pride or even well-being is at stake, it can be right to turn the other cheek. But when the lives of others are involved, that amounts to reckless cowardice empowered by moralistic preening. So, I will argue, does refusing to fool the guilty in order to save the innocent — a stance I’ll call “verbal pacifism.”
The Bad Effects of Verbal Pacifism
Here are just a few of the implications of verbal pacifism. On that theory, the following activities would be intrinsically evil, just like using child suicide bombers against the Nazis — and it would be better to die, and let millions of others be tortured, raped or killed, rather than engage in them. In fact, doing any one of them would be a sin sufficient to damn one’s soul to hell:
Deceiving the Pharaoh who wished to kill all the newborn male Hebrews — as the midwives did in Exodus 1:15-21. (The Bible tells us that “God dealt well with the midwives.”)
Deceiving priest-hunters by using assumed names, as Jesuit missionaries did when they ministered in Reformation England, and St. Miguel Pro did in Mexico in the 1920s.
Deceiving the Nazis to rescue Jews from the gas chambers, as Oskar Schindler did.
Distributing false baptismal certificates so that Jews could pass as Gentiles and escape extermination, as John XXIII did during World War II.
Using false documents and false statements in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, like the conspirators working with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who were aided by Pope Pius XII (who passed their messages via Vatican couriers).
Deceiving the brutal dictators who hoped to hunt down and torture leftist priests, as Pope Francis did while serving as Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
Posing as a child in online forums in order to catch child porn distributors and pedophiles, as police routinely do — having found it the only effective means of capturing such predators.
Pretending to be an Islamist, in order to infiltrate terrorist organizations like al-Qaida and ISIS, as CIA operatives do.
Misleading criminal suspects about the evidence you have, as police do to obtain truthful confessions without coercion.
Infiltrating an abortion business like Planned Parenthood to see if they are breaking laws about statutory rape and organ trafficking, as Live Action and the Center for Medical Progress did.
Any moral philosophy that claims that all these activities are intrinsically evil has got some explaining to do. By insisting on premises that yield such repugnant conclusions, and claiming that the only alternative is a crass and unprincipled pragmatism, verbal pacifists are cutting off their nose to spite their face.
Where the Great Augustine Went Wrong
Verbal pacifists’ profound confusion can be traced to one of the greatest writers and thinkers in history, St. Augustine, who wrote in De Mendacio that it would be wrong to deceive murderers at your door who asked about their hoped-for victim within. (Augustine found falsehood especially repulsive because it played such a major role in his previous life as a pagan, when he worked as a rhetorician, by his own admission flattering and lying for hire.) Augustine was not a physical pacifist, however, just a verbal one. While he wouldn’t allow you to lie to these would-be killers, if they tried to force their way in, you might be justified in killing them. Thomas Aquinas agreed; he likewise condemned all deception, but allowed for defensive wars, and even the use of torture on Christian “heretics.”
How can we make sense of such a position, which sees physical violence as almost morally neutral — its merits depend on the situation at hand — but verbal falsehood as evil beyond excusing? Moral philosopher Janet Smith has done the heavy lifting here. In a brilliant article for First Things provoked by Mark Shea’s relentless campaign against pro-life activists, she critiqued the fundamental premise of the Augustinian tradition: That human speech was created exclusively for speaking the truth, and we sinfully pervert it by using it deceptively, in however worthy a cause.
As Smith writes, that claim is correct as far as it goes. Just so, human hands were not made to kill or fight with other men, but to till the Garden of Eden. However, given the Fall, God permits us and even commands us to use our bodies in new ways that would have been unnecessary and wrong in an unfallen world: Thus Christian soldiers and policemen can use deadly force when needed in defense of the innocent. Why should our words be held to such a radically different standard than our bodies?
At this point in the argument, someone is bound to start misquoting scripture, pointing to the fact that Christ is called “the Word,” and suggesting that what we say is morally more significant than what we do, since it reflects our inner selves more purely or perfectly or something. That is gnostic balderdash. Christ saved us not by what He said but by what He did. On the cross. With His body.
In the early Church, non-Christians were invited to attend the liturgy long enough to hear the Gospel — but then ushered out before the sacrifice of His sacred body and blood. Even today, we let the unbaptized read the Bible, but not partake in Communion. And so on. It is frankly bizarre to treat words, made by man, as more significant than bodies that took life from God.
Just so, CMP’s words, spoken to professional killers who have no right to expect the truth, were nothing sacred. What was sacred were the lives of those tiny, helpless humans whom Planned Parenthood sells like scrap metal or chicken parts. We must choose our words very carefully in such innocent children’s defense. We will each someday be called to answer for what we did or didn’t do to help “the least” among us. Iranian officials recently began to reveal details from the nuclear negotiations with the U.S. since their early stages. Their statements indicate that the U.S. initiated secret negotiations with Iran not after President Hassan Rohani, of the pragmatic camp, was elected in 2013, but rather in 2011-2012, in the era of radical president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The disclosures also indicate that, already at that time, Iran received from the U.S. administration a letter recognizing its right to enrich uranium on its own soil. Hossein Sheikh Al-Islam, an advisor to the Majlis speaker, specified that the letter had come from John Kerry, then a senator and head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Iranian vice president and top negotiator Ali Akbar Salehi said that Kerry, while still a senator, had been appointed by President Obama to handle the nuclear contacts with Iran.
The following are initial details from these disclosures; a full translation is pending.
Khamenei: Bilateral Talks Began In 2011, Were Based On U.S. Recognition Of Nuclear Iran
In a speech he delivered on June 23, 2015, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said that the American administration had initiated the nuclear talks with Iran during Ahmadinejad’s term in office, based on a U.S. recognition of a nuclear Iran: “The issue of negotiating with the Americans is related to the term of the previous [Ahmadinejad] government, and to the dispatching of a mediator to Tehran to request talks. At the time, a respected regional figure came to me as a mediator [referring to Omani Sultan Qaboos] and explicitly said that U.S. President [Obama] had asked him to come to Tehran and present an American request for negotiations. The Americans told this mediator: ‘We want to solve the nuclear issue and lift sanctions within six months, while recognizing Iran as a nuclear power.’ I told that mediator that I did not trust the Americans and their words, but after he insisted, I agreed to reexamine this topic, and negotiations began” . . .
In an interview with the Tasnim news agency on July 7, 2015, Hossein Sheikh Al-Islam, an advisor to Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, said that John Kerry had relayed a letter to Tehran recognizing Iran’s enrichment rights: “We came to the [secret] negotiations [with the U.S.] after Kerry wrote a letter and sent it to us via Oman, stating that America officially recognizes Iran’s rights regarding the [nuclear fuel] enrichment cycle. Then there were two meetings in Oman between the [Iranian and U.S.] deputy foreign ministers, and after those, Sultan Qaboos was dispatched by Obama to Khamenei with Kerry’s letter. Khamenei told him: ‘I don’t trust them.’ Sultan Qaboos said: ‘Trust them one more time.’ On this basis the negotiations began, and not on the basis of sanctions, as they [the Americans] claim in their propaganda.” (Read more from “Iranian Senior Officials Disclose Confidential Details From Nuclear Negotiations” HERE)
By Randy DeSoto. A British special forces sniper saved the lives of a young boy and his father who were about to be decapitated by ISIS militants.
They were dragged out of the crowd and made to kneel down as a tall, bearded, knife-wielding jihadist emerged and stood over them. Two ISIS fighters toting AK-47s also stood nearby.
“[The ISIS militant] began addressing the crowd and slapping the father and his son around the head and kicking them on to the floor,” a source told the Daily Star.
The SAS unit quickly ruled out a drone strike, concerned that innocent bystanders would be killed. Their sniper was tasked to put his skills to use.
From over a half-mile away, the sharpshooter, using a .50 calibre sniper rifle fitted with a silencer, killed the executioner just in time. (Read more from “An ISIS Thug Was About to Behead a Boy and His Father When an Unseen Force Turned the Tables” HERE)
British Sniper Saves Boy, Father From Islamic State Beheading With Half-Mile Shot
By Sharona Schwartz. A British special forces sniper saved the lives of a boy and his father who were about to be beheaded by Islamic State jihadists by firing a shot at the head of the executioner from his position more than half a mile away, a British newspaper reported.
According to the Daily Star, a unit of Britain’s special forces Special Air Service carrying out covert patrols on the Syrian-Turkish border was tipped by an Iraqi spy to the execution site where Shiites accused of being “infidels” were going to be beheaded.
An unnamed military source told the newspaper that “there were several decapitated bodies already lying on the ground” in the village where the field trial and punishment were underway.
An SAS ground unit had moved into position just outside the village where the gruesome punishment was being meted out.
“Through binoculars, the soldiers could see that the crowd were terrified and many were in tears,” the source said. (Read more from this story HERE)

By Elise Labbot. Hillary Clinton agreed to turn over her private email server to authorities on Tuesday, the same day an intelligence community inspector general told congressional committees that at least five emails from the server did contain classified information.
The decision to hand over the server, as well as a thumb drive of all her work-related emails to the Justice Department, represents an effort to blunt an expanding probe into the use of a private email account.
Clinton, now the Democratic presidential front-runner, “directed her team to give her email server that was used during her tenure as (Secretary of State) to the Department of Justice, as well as a thumb drive containing copies of her emails already provided to the State Department,” her spokesman, Nick Merrill, told CNN early Tuesday evening. “She pledged to cooperate with the government’s security inquiry, and if there are more questions, we will continue to address them.”
Merrill said in the meantime, Clinton’s team “has worked with the State Department to ensure her emails are stored in a safe and secure manner.”
The FBI, which is handling the matter, declined to comment Tuesday evening. David E. Kendall, Clinton’s lawyer, did not immediately return messages seeking comment. (Read more from “Hillary Clinton to Turn Over Private Email Server to Justice Department” HERE)
Hillary Clinton Swears: I Turned Over All My Required E-Mails
By Rosalind S. Helderman. Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton, facing questions over her use of a private e-mail system while secretary of state, signed a statement over the weekend declaring “under penalty of perjury” that she has turned over to the government all of the e-mails that were federal records.
The statement, which the State Department submitted to a federal court Monday, matches what she and her campaign have said for months about her exclusive use of a private e-mail account and server to conduct public business.
But it comes as Republicans have charged that Clinton may have withheld some correspondence that should have been part of the public record.
Clinton’s e-mail practices have also drawn scrutiny in recent days from the FBI, which is examining the security of the setup in the wake of a finding by government officials that classified material was sent through the system. Officials have said that Clinton is not a target of the investigation.
In a statement that begins, “I, Hillary Rodham Clinton, declare under penalty of perjury that the following is true and correct,” Clinton also acknowledges that her top aide, Huma Abedin, used an account on the same private domain for public business. She states that another aide, Cheryl Mills, did not use the domain, clintonemail.com. (Read more from this story HERE)

By Tom Tillison. Donald Trump fired a new salvo Monday in his ongoing feud with Megyn Kelly.
The real estate tycoon-turned-Republican-presidential-front-runner upped the ante against the popular Fox News host when he posted a link on social media to an interview Kelly participated in five years ago with smut-king Howard Stern. The interview is pretty raunchy, from Stern’s end, naturally, and touches on the size of Kelly’s breasts, her husband’s penis size and includes some graphic sex talk.
Trump also offered an opinion who’s more “innocent.”
Megyn Kelly Talks With Howard Stern, and It’s Repulsive
By Greg Richter. Megyn Kelly may have suggested that she was turned off by Donald Trump’s sexist remarks, but that didn’t stop her from rollicking with Howard Stern, discussing her breasts and her husband’s penis size and engaging in some graphic sex talk.
Stern has been accused of being tough on women, such as in 2013 when he called “Girls” actress Lena Dunham “a little fat girl who kinda looks like Jonah Hill, and she keeps taking her clothes off, and it kind of feels like rape.” He also is known for having women remove all their clothing during his radio broadcasts while he ogles and describes them.
In a 2010 interview, the Fox News star laughed with glee as Stern talked about her breasts.
“We used to call them ‘Killer B’s’ then when I got pregnant they became ‘Swimmin’ C’s’ and Doug was frolicking in the ocean,” Kelly said of her husband, author Douglas Brunt.
Stern asked whether she would have considered not marrying Brunt if his penis had been small. (Read more from “Megyn Kelly Talks With Howard Stern, and It’s Repulsive” HERE)

By Phil Helsel. Police on Tuesday released surveillance video that they say shows a teenager appear to pull a weapon from his waistband before he was later shot and critically wounded by plainclothes police in Ferguson, Missouri.
The shooting of Tyrone Harris, 18, Sunday, on the anniversary of the death of Michael Brown, threatened to reignite racial tensions in the city that exploded in unrest after last year’s deadly shooting by a white police officer.
Harris is in critical condition. He is charged with four counts of assault on law enforcement, five counts of armed criminal action and one count of shooting at a motor vehicle.
The surveillance video, given to police by a local business, shows a panicked crowd running for cover and then a young man in a white T-shirt appearing to be holding gun running off screen and pointing the weapon. Police identified that man as Harris. The video appears to dispute some recent reports and witnesses who said Harris was not armed.
St. Louis County authorities declared a state of emergency Monday after Sunday’s violence. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the police shooting took place after two separate groups in the vicinity had traded a “remarkable” amount of gunfire — between 40 and 50 shots. He said those involved were “criminals, not protesters” marking the anniversary of Brown’s death. (Read more from “Police Release Video Showing Moments Before Ferguson Shooting on Michael Brown Anniversary” HERE)
By CNN Wires. A day of civil disobedience that saw several arrests in Ferguson ended Monday with some rowdy protesters throwing rocks and bottles at police.
The St. Louis County police said frozen water bottles were thrown at officers, prompting them to order the crowd to disperse or face arrest.
“Safety, our top priority, is now compromised. This is no longer a peaceful protest. Participants are now unlawfully assembled,” the department tweeted
Police Chief Jon Belmar tried to deescalate the tension by speaking with some demonstrators, who then moved from the street to the sidewalks.
However, others were seething with anger as word spread that police had arrested a 12-year-old girl. Police contended she was 18, according to her ID. (Read more from this story HERE)

By Albuquerque Journal. Gov. Susana Martinez said New Mexico will declare a state of emergency this afternoon as a result of the 3-million-gallon yellow plume of toxic waste dumped into the Animas River and making its way through this state into the San Juan River toward Lake Powell in Utah on Monday.
The governor’s declaration, which she said would occur this afternoon, follows other emergency declarations in Colorado and on the Navajo Nation Monday.
Some drinking water systems on the Navajo Nation, which spans parts of New Mexico, Arizona and Utah, have shut down their intake systems and stopped diverting water from the river. Drinking water is being hauled to some communities.
Navajo President Russell Begaye said the tribe is frustrated with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and he plans to take legal action. An EPA-supervised crew has been blamed for causing the spill while attempting to clean up the mine area.
Elsewhere, farms along the Animas and San Juan river valleys in northwestern New Mexico have no water to irrigate their crops after the spill. (Read more from “New Mexico Declares State of Emergency After Toxic Waste Spill” HERE)
State of Emergency: Colorado Wastewater Leak Far Exceeds First Estimates
By Erin McClam. Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado declared a state of emergency on Monday, five days after a spill that sent toxic water seeping from an abandoned gold mine and turned a river orange.
The Environmental Protection Agency said Sunday that 3 million gallons of wastewater had spilled, three times as much as earlier estimates, and that health risks to humans and aquatic life were not yet clear.
Hickenlooper said the disaster declaration would allow him to use $500,000 from the state’s disaster fund to pay for the response. Some of the money will go toward towns and businesses hurt by the spill.
“We will work closely with the EPA to continue to measure water quality as it returns to normal, but also to work together to assess other mines throughout the state to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” the governor said in a statement.
On Wednesday, an EPA-supervised cleanup crew accidentally breached a debris dam that had formed inside the Gold King Mine, shuttered since 1923, sending a yellow-orange sludge leaking into the Animas River. (Read more from this story HERE)
