Ex-Cruz Campaign Spokesperson: Trump Lying About Campaign Cash
Typically, there’s a healthy amount of exaggeration in any kind of political rhetoric, but what Donald Trump has told voters about his fundraising doesn’t even have a shred of truth.
Take this tweet he wrote on May 29
Good news is that my campaign has perhaps more cash than any campaign in the history of politics- b/c I stand 100% behind everything we do.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2016
On Sunday evening, when his FEC report covering his spending and expenses for the month of May was made public, it was revealed he only had a meager $1.3 million cash on hand, even after lending his campaign $2.2 million in personal funds over the last filing period.
Hillary Clinton reported $42 million in the bank.
Trump’s campaign does not, not even “perhaps,” have “more cash than any campaign in the history of politics.” His presidential campaign, perhaps, has the least amount of cash on hand for any presidential campaign in modern history at this stage of the election.
He lied.
His supporters, grasping at straws, argue that Trump’s personal wealth is a backstop and can be used at any time to infuse the campaign with resources.
Republican National Committee Spokesman Sean Spicer told CNN “Donald Trump financed his campaign all the way to this point by adding in more of his own personal money. So it’s false to say that he has $1.3 million. If he wanted to get that number up in two seconds, he just strokes a check and it’s up.”
Well, why hasn’t he stroked that check? What’s Trump waiting for? For Clinton and her allies to amass the $1 billion they’ve discussed? Why is he choosing to let Clinton get such a significant head start?
No one in their right mind would make this choice. Trump isn’t stupid; he’s stuck. Remember, he won the primary, in part, by promising voters he didn’t need anyone else’s financial support. He backed himself into a corner.
If Trump could and was truly willing to self-fund his campaign, he would be self-funding his campaign. He’s not and it’s either because he doesn’t have the money or doesn’t want to put it into his campaign.
Not that the reason really matters. Bottom line, Trump’s campaign doesn’t have cash from donors or Trump’s coffers. Either way, it’s broke.
And that’s what makes the tweet he wrote on May 29 about having “more cash than any campaign in the history of politics” his biggest lie yet. (For more from the author of “The Biggest Lie Trump Has Told About His Campaign Yet” please click HERE)
