San Francisco’s ‘Diseased Streets’ Are Being Compared to Some of Worst Slums in the World

A combination of discarded needles and piles of feces on the streets of San Francisco has caused least one expert to say that the city’s slums are comparable to those in developing countries.

Reporters with KNTV investigated what they referred to as the “diseased streets” of the city, and found that each of the 153 downtown blocks they surveyed — an area that encompasses playgrounds, hotels and government buildings — is littered with garbage. Included in this trash were at least 100 drug needles and 300 piles of feces.

Dr. Lee Riley, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, Berkeley, warned that not only do the needles cause viral diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis, but dried fecal matter can release airborne viruses like the rotavirus.

“If you happen to inhale that, it can also go into your intestine,” he said, leading to potentially fatal results.

Riley, who has researched and written about conditions in slums across the world, believes that some parts of San Francisco may be worse than the world’s dirtiest slums.

“The contamination is … much greater than communities in Brazil or Kenya or India,” he said, while pointing out that in those countries, slums often serve as long-term housing, and thus, their residents work to maintain them.

But in San Francisco, he suggested that the homeless do not make an effort to keep the streets clean because they are forced to move around frequently.

The situation on the streets of San Francisco is particularly dangerous for children.

“We see poop, we see pee, we see needles, and we see trash,” said Adelita Orellana, a preschool teacher. “Sometimes they ask what is it, and that’s a conversation that’s a little difficult to have with a 2-year old, but we just let them know that those things are full of germs, that they are dangerous, and they should never be touched.”

A’Nylah Reed, a 3-year-old preschooler, explained that “the floor is dirty,” making her walk to school difficult.

“There is poop in there,” she said. “That makes me angry.” Reed’s mother, meanwhile, noted that she often has to physically intervene to ensure that her daughter doesn’t step on needles or human feces.

Some city officials are convinced that the solution is to provide short-term housing for the city’s homeless population.

“Unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable,” said city Supervisor Hillary Ronen. “We’re losing tourists. We’re losing conventions in San Francisco. All of this is happening because we aren’t addressing the root cause, which is we need more temporary beds for street homelessness.”

The city currently has about 2,000 temporary beds, but Rosen believes about 1,000 more are needed, KNTV reported. This would likely cost roughly $25 million.

“We need to find a source of revenue,” she said. “Whether that’s putting something on the ballot to raise business taxes or taking a look at our general fund and re-allocating money towards that purpose and taking it away from something else in the city.”

Regardless, Ronen said the situation in San Francisco is a human “tragedy.”

“We’re not going to make a huge dent in this problem unless we deal with some underlying major social problems and issues,” she stated. “There’s a human tragedy happening in San Francisco.”

Until a permanent solution is decided upon, all the city can do is remove feces and needles from the streets, an effort that cost about $30 million in the 2016-2017 fiscal year, according to Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru.

Removing just one pile of human waste takes a half an hour, Nuru said.

“The steamer has to come. He has to park the steamer. He’s got to come out with his steamer, disinfect, steam clean, roll up and go,” he explained.

The dirty streets in San Francisco haven’t stopped it from being ranked among the most beautiful in the world. But the city is also one of the most expensive in the U.S., with Fox News noting that this accentuates a large “gap between the haves and have-nots.” (For more from the author of “San Francisco’s ‘Diseased Streets’ Are Being Compared to Some of Worst Slums in the World” please click HERE)

Student Threatens to ‘Shoot up’ His School – What Police Find at His Home Is Chilling

California law enforcement authorities say they might have prevented a school shooting at El Camino High School after a student muttered that he was going to “shoot up” the campus . . .

Police were called immediately after a seventeen-year-old student said that he was planning to “shoot up” the school and was overheard by a safety officer. During an investigation, they discovered a cache of weapons at his home.

Robert Jacobsen, the general counsel for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, said that the student made the comments after a disagreement with a teacher over headphones.

Marino Chavez, the safety officer, questioned the student about what he overheard him saying. After investigating the matter, the student said that he was simply joking.

“He did say that he was just kidding, he did not mean it. I said, ‘Well you can’t say those things on a school campus,’” Chavez said.

Chavez informed the police, who saw that an AR-15 was registered at the student’s address. When they investigated the home, they discovered several weapons, including two AR-15 rifles, two handguns and 90 high-capacity magazines. Maryland Police Officer Second to Be Murdered Within 12 Hours

A Maryland police Medal of Valor winner was shot and killed Wednesday while intervening in a domestic violence dispute, officials said, making him the second police officer killed in the U.S. in just a 12-hour span.

Police named 14-year veteran Cpl. Mujahid A. Ramazziddin, 51, as the officer killed in the confrontation. He was off duty at the time of the incident. He was assigned to the Special Operations Division.

According to a news release from Prince George’s Police Department, Ramazziddin was assisting a female neighbor “who was being threatened by her estranged husband.” The armed suspect fatally shot the officer and left the area in a black SUV, police said.

NBC Washington reported the officer was a veteran of the Marine Corps and a father of four children. . .

The SUV was spotted shortly after by law enforcement and a pursuit began, the news release said. The suspect ditched his vehicle and reportedly engaged in “an exchange of gunfire.” Officers shot and killed the man as he attempted to flee in a wooded area, NBC Washington reported.

Navy Sends Destroyers to ‘Desensitize’ Russia

The Navy has deployed the guided-missile destroyer Carney to join the destroyer Ross in the Black Sea in a move that U.S. military officials told CNN is intended to “desensitize” Russia to the presence of American military assets in the strategically important region.

The deployment of the Carney marks the first time in four years that two American destroyers have operated in the Black Sea outside of scheduled exercises. The move comes as Russia continues to militarize Crimea, the peninsula it seized from Ukraine in 2014.

In recent years, the U.S. and NATO have accused Russia of sending troops and military hardware to Crimea, and there are now reports that submarines have been added to the mix.

Nevertheless, U.S. and NATO officials have insisted that they are not playing tit-for-tat with the Russians.

“Our decision to have two ships simultaneously operate in the Black Sea is proactive, not reactive,” said Vice Adm. Christopher Grady, commander of 6th Fleet, which oversees U.S. naval operations in the region. “The continued presence of the U.S. Navy in the Black Sea demonstrates our enduring commitment to regional stability, maritime security of our Black Sea partners, and the collective defense of our NATO allies,” he added. California Claims It Can’t ‘Promote Abortion’ Without Pro-Life Centers

California has filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court complaining that it cannot adequately promote abortion services without the help of a tiny number of pro-life pregnancy centers that mostly offer pregnancy tests, diapers and counseling.

The argument comes in a lawsuit against a state law, similar to others that have been struck down elsewhere, that requires the pro-life centers to provide contact information for state-funded abortion services to every woman who walks through their doors.

The state of California argues its abortion promotion is “a brief, non-ideological notice that readers will quickly identify as simply one of many government-mandated notices in the healthcare context.”

The pregnancy centers, however, insist that forcing them to promote abortionists violates their their deeply held religious beliefs.

The state argues that it is requiring pro-life centers to publish telephone numbers for abortion-linked facilities so that women are given the “full spectrum of relevant healthcare.” (Read more from “California Claims It Can’t ‘Promote Abortion’ Without Pro-Life Centers” HERE)

Bernie Goes After Hillary and Her Involvement With Russia Meddling

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) said Wednesday that he did not know at the time that Russian trolls promoted his 2016 presidential campaign and wondered why Hillary Clinton’s team did not do more to tell voters about the extent of Russia’s election interference.

In addition to their well-known efforts to boost Donald Trump, Russian trolls supported Sanders’ presidential primary campaign, when he mounted a surprisingly strong but ultimately unsuccessful challenge to Clinton, according to special counsel Robert Mueller’s indictment from last week.

Mueller’s team indicted 13 Russian nationals and three companies for interfering in U.S. elections from 2014 to 2016.

In an interview on Vermont Public Radio, Sanders took issue with a listener’s question that made it seem as if he knew about Russian bots promoting his candidacy at the time he was running.

“If he was aware that Russians were trying to promote him and divide Democrats against Mrs. Clinton, why did he not communicate this to his supporters?” the listener asked Sanders. (Read more from “Bernie Goes After Hillary and Her Involvement With Russia Meddling” HERE)

Bill Graham on Heaven

With the passing of Billy Graham, the eulogies and reflections on the famed Christian evangelist who died today at 99 are of course pouring in – many of them memorable and affecting, like that of Alveda King, niece of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who said:

“As a fledgling freelance journalist in the 20th century, I interviewed Dr. Graham who was in Atlanta to conduct a crusade. As he spoke, he admonished me to ‘pray without ceasing.’ As he spoke, his brilliant blue eyes were glowing with a heavenly brightness. As I naively asked how anyone could pray 24/7; he quietly responded in a reverberating voice: ‘I’m praying for you right now.’ This unforgettable experience changed my life forever.”

However, my own experience with Billy Graham is much more typical and impersonal – and yet likewise profound. As a kid growing up during the ’50s and ’60s I watched Billy Graham’s crusades on television with my parents and siblings, like the rest of America. I actually remember them pretty vividly – the passion of his preaching, his North Carolina accent, the altar calls, the particular music, and his closing admonition to “go to church next Sunday.” But in truth, I was much too caught up with my various ambitions and pursuits, my problems and selfishness – “the cares of this life” – to be penetrated very much by his message back then. It was only much later in life, after I’d suffered a lot and realized something very important was still missing from my life, that Billy Graham’s efforts truly hit “pay dirt” in me.

As the most heard evangelist in world history (an estimated 2.2 billion people), Billy Graham once explained the profound impact of his methods: “I have found that when I present the simple message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with authority and simplicity, quoting the Word of God, He takes that message and drives it supernaturally into the human heart.”

“I have one message,” Graham said at his final crusade in June 2005 in New York: “that Jesus Christ came, he died on a cross, he rose again, and he asked us to repent of our sins and receive him by faith as Lord and Savior, and if we do, we have forgiveness of all of our sins.” (Read more from “Bill Graham on Heaven” HERE)

Harvard Attacked for Choosing White Male as Next University President

Harvard University had only just announced its next president before he came under attack — not for anything he did, but for who he is.

That is, in the eyes of his critics, at least, a “white male.”

The New York Times greeted the selection with a news article reporting in its second paragraph that, in selecting Lawrence Bacow earlier this month, the search committee had missed “an opportunity for Harvard to choose a leader who would reflect the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements.”

Harvard’s student newspaper, the Crimson, of which I was president 25 years ago, reported that the announcement, “surprised and disappointed some College students who had hoped a person of color would take the University’s top job.”

Such intense reaction tells two newsworthy stories: a negative tale about the politics of race and gender on campus and a positive one about America and its Jews. (Read more from “Harvard Attacked for Choosing White Male as Next University President” HERE)

The Next Big Thing: Universal Basic Income

A revolution is coming to America and the world, and it’s threatening workers’ livelihoods, warn big tech moguls and politicians . . .

Humans in a wide range of industries could be rendered useless or inadequate in their fields. Telemarketers, bookkeepers, receptionists, delivery workers, customer support specialists, retail salespeople, cashiers, tax preparers, sports referees, machine operators, truckers, taxi drivers, fast-food cooks and warehouse and factory workers are at exceptional risk of being replaced.

Welcome to the Artificial Intelligence revolution, where robots and cutting-edge technology could render traditional American jobs obsolete, forcing workers to adapt their roles or lose their jobs altogether. . .

Americans will need a guaranteed source of income, say tech industry leaders, many of whom are advocating for a Universal Basic Income, or UBI, a plan to give all citizens a sum of money regardless of their employment status. The idea is quickly gaining traction across America and around the world.

In a recent interview with CNN, billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson explained why he believes many Americans will rely on cash stipends to prevent them from becoming homeless when the AI revolution is in full force. (Read more from “The Next Big Thing: Universal Basic Income” HERE)

Special Prosecutor, Grand Jury May Be in Hillary’s Future Given Recent Moves by AG Sessions, New Revelations

By Politico. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is raising the possibility of naming a new special counsel to investigate potential wrongdoing by the Clinton Foundation, according to a letter the Justice Department sent Monday to House Republicans.

Sessions has asked top Justice Department prosecutors to look into a variety of allegations that have dominated conservative media outlets in recent months, including suggestions that a U.S. government panel approved the sale of a large uranium firm to Russian interests in exchange for donations to the foundation founded by Bill and Hillary Clinton, the letter to House members says.

“The Attorney General has directed senior federal prosecutors to evaluate certain issues raised in your letters,” Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd said in the letter obtained by POLITICO and sent to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), among others.

“These senior prosecutors will report directly to the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General, as appropriate, and will make recommendations as to whether any matters not currently under investigation should be opened, whether any matters currently under investigation, require further resources, or whether any matters merit the appointment of a Special Counsel,” Boyd added. Feds Face New Demands to Probe Hillary Clinton

By WND. . .Two new lawsuits have just been filed demanding answers from the “deep state bureaucracy” to a lot of questions about what went on under the Obama administration.

The lawsuits, one against the FBI and the Department of Justice, and another against the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department of State, the FBI and the Treasury Department, were filed by the public interest American Center for Law and Justice.

Citing “an all-too-familiar pattern and practice of failure by several federal bureaucratic agencies to comply with Freedom of Information Act requirements,” the ACLJ said it is suing to get the answers federal law requires those agencies provide.

“We are asking a federal court to order the agencies to issue determinations and produce documents responsive” to the ACLJ’s questions, the organization stated.

The complaints focus on the “sham Clinton investigation” concerning her use of an unauthorized and unsecured computer server for the nation’s classified secrets while Hillary Clinton was U.S. secretary of state, and the Uranium One scandal, when millions of dollars came from Russia to the Clinton Foundation just as she was on a committee authorizing Russian ownership of uranium assets. Arkansas and the Clinton Connection

By Judicial Watch. Rumors have been floating up from Little Rock for months now of a new investigation into the Clinton Foundation. John Solomon advanced the story recently in a January report for The Hill. FBI agents in the Arkansas capital, he wrote, “have taken the lead” in a new Justice Department inquiry “into whether the Clinton Foundation engaged in any pay-to-play politics or other illegal activities while Hillary Clinton served as secretary of state.” Solomon reports that the probe “may also examine whether any tax-exempt assets were converted for personal or political use and whether the foundation complied with applicable tax laws.” Main Justice also is “re-examining whether there are any unresolved issues from the closed case into Clinton’s transmission of classified information through her personal email server,” Solomon notes.

Solomon is not alone. The Wall Street Journal is tracking the story. And earlier this month, investigative journalist Peter Schweizer cryptically told SiriusXM radio that federal authorities should “convene a grand jury” in Little Rock “and let the American people look at the evidence” about the Clinton Foundation.

Judicial Watch continues to turn up new evidence of Clinton pay-to-play and mishandling of classified information. In recent months, through FOIA litigation, Judicial Watch has forced the release of more than 2,600 emails and documents from Mrs. Clinton and her associates, with more to come. The emails include evidence of Clinton Foundation donors such XL Keystone lobbyist Gordon Griffin, futures brokerage firm CME Group chairman Terrence Duffy, and an associate of Shangri La Entertainment mogul Steve Bing seeking special favors from the State Department.
