Black Student Upset That Exam Question on Segregation Offended White People

A law professor is offering to strike an exam question after students freaked out when he asked them to argue in favor of segregation.

University of Texas at Austin law professor Richard Albert, who is black, administered an exam asking students to argue in favor of school segregation in a memo of 1,000 words or less, according to Misrule of Law.

“No one should have been forced to write an essay defending segregation,” one unnamed white student wrote to the class in an email.

He said that the question made him “shocked and disgusted” and urged students to complain to the UT law administration.

A black student expressed displeasure with the white student’s reaction, but not because she was a fan of the question. (Read more from “Black Student Upset That Exam Question on Segregation Offended White People” HERE)

After Drawing Criticism, Starbucks Clarifies New ‘Bathroom Policy’

Less than 48 hours after Starbucks revealed a new [store] policy that allows anyone to use a cafe’s facilities regardless if they make a purchase, the company clarified the policy Monday after it had been heavily criticized on social media.

Referred to as its “Third Place” policy, Starbucks said in a letter to its U.S. employees Saturday that “any person who enters our spaces, including patios, cafes and restrooms, regardless of whether they make a purchase, is considered a customer.”

The announcement immediately drew criticism from customers and even employees who feared the popular cafes would now turn into glorified homeless shelters.

Even former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was one of many on social media who poked fun at the rationale behind Starbucks’ decision.

On Monday, Starbucks revealed more about the policy, telling The Wall Street Journal that employees now have detailed instructions on what to do if someone is behaving in a disruptive manner, such as smoking, using drugs or alcohol, using restrooms improperly or sleeping.

“We want our stores to be the third place, a warm and welcoming environment where customers can gather and connect,” the company said in a statement. “When using a Starbucks space, we respectfully request that customers behave in a manner that maintains a warm and welcoming environment by: using spaces as intended, being considerate of others, communicating with respect [and] acting responsibly.”

When dealing with behavior that may be considered disruptive, Starbucks said managers and baristas should first ask a fellow employee to verify that a certain behavior is disruptive and if it is, respectfully request that the customer stop. The company also listed talking too loudly, playing loud music and viewing inappropriate content as other examples of disruptive behavior.

Starbucks says it has also provided employees with examples of instances where they should call 911, which includes when a customer is using or selling drugs.

The clarification of its “Third Place” policy comes one month after a high-profile incident in one of the company’s Philadelphia stores, where two black men asked to use the restroom but did not make a purchase. The men were then arrested for not leaving the store when asked to do so.

Starbucks apologized for the incident, but was villified on social media as being racist. In response, the company is closing all of its 8,000 company-owned restaurants in the U.S. during the afternoon of May 29 to “address implicit bias, promote inclusion and help prevent discrimination.”

While addressing negative incidents in a prompt manner is a good public relations move for any business, even some experts in the field wonder if the decision to open cafes to anyone and everyone who wants to use them is a smart move.

Gene Marks of Entrepreur magazine says Starbucks didn’t handle the situation in Philadelphia well by having the two men arrested, but he also believes the new policy is a mistake, as well.

“What will Starbucks do if the policy fails? Has this really been thought through? Was it even tested during this past month?” Marks wrote. “Please, don’t ever do this in your business. Yes, we all sympathize with the homeless, but do you sympathize so much that you would sit next to someone who’s been living rough (and smells like it) after spending six bucks on a Frappuccino?

“And what about their employees? Does the company realize just how much more difficult their jobs will become? Will Starbucks lose valuable people due to the added stress from adding ‘policeman’ and ‘psychiatrist’ to their already long list of job duties? I think so.”

Some Starbucks employees are already tired of dealing with non-paying customers. A person who identified themself as an employee at a Starbucks in downtown Chicago said in a Reddit forum they hate the new policy because the store bathrooms have turned into a hub for drug activity.

“We haven’t been allowed to change our bathroom codes since April. So almost all the junkies and homeless people know the code now. About once a week we find needles, drug baggies, blood all over the toilet or walls,” the user wrote.

The policy of how welcoming a business is to customers who don’t make a purchase, or a restaurant who allows customers to linger well beyond the time it takes to eat or drink what they’ve purchased, is not unique to Starbucks.

But because the chain has made its policy clear to the public as well as its employees, other restaurants are going to be watching the effects going forward.

“The whole Starbucks situation has opened up a can of worms. In most cases restaurants leave it up to the discretion of the individual restaurant and most are too busy to enforce a policy,” said Joe Pawlak, managing principal at restaurant consulting firm Technomic Inc., told the Wall Street Journal. Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg Met With European Parliament. Things Did Not Go Well.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg met with lawmakers from the European Union Parliament on Tuesday to answer questions about his company’s use of consumer data and election manipulation on the platform.

He was also threatened with consequences over the recent scandals involving his social media company, including increased regulations and the splitting of the company over antitrust concerns.

Several lawmakers complained about the format of the questioning, which allowed Zuckerberg to selectively provide answers. Facebook did agree, however, to later provide further responses in written format . . .

Brexit mastermind Nigel Farage accused the company of “willfully” discriminating against right-of-center views on the social network. Zuckerberg responded that Facebook had “never made a decision about what content was allowed on the basis of political orientation.” . . .

“Mr. Zuckerberg’s apologies are not enough. We are looking for further commitments…and we will be looking forward to getting his written answers on Cambridge Analytica. It’s obvious that kind of thing should not happen again.” (Read more from “Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg Met With European Parliament. Things Did Not Go Well.” HERE)

Devastating 2016 Strzok Text Found: Obama’s WH Is Running Trump Investigation

. . .That admission, combined with the voluminous ream of text messages between FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page that had previously been released, have made it abundantly clear that Obama’s FBI was indeed running a counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign, one that was directed from the highest levels . . .

McCarthy’s main takeaway was that the Department of Justice had redacted the juiciest and most revealing parts of those texts, specifically the names of high-ranking officials outside of the FBI who were involved in the investigation, among other bits of information potentially damning for the Obama administration.

There was one text in particular from Strzok that McCarthy highlighted that former Bush White House press secretary Ari Fleischer felt should have garnered even more attention than it did, a message that appeared to indicate the involvement of the Obama White House in running the entire operation.

That message from Strzok to Page was in regard to a high-level meeting — which included “agency people,” as in CIA officials — held Aug. 5, 2016 following his return from a trip to London where he presumably interviewed the FBI’s informant, though those particular details were redacted.

The message from Strzok read: “And hi. Went well, best we could have expected. Other than (REDACTED) quote: ‘the White House is running this.’ My answer, ‘well, maybe for you they are.’ And of course, I was planning on telling this guy, thanks for coming, we’ve got an hour, but with Bill (Priestap) there, I’ve got no control.” (Read more from “Devastating 2016 Strzok Text Found: Obama’s WH Is Running Trump Investigation” HERE)

Obama Education Secretary: Don’t Teach Children Until Gun Control Achieved

. . .Perhaps one of the most absurd was that of the Obama administration’s former assistant secretary of education, Peter Cunningham, who suggested in a tweet that “maybe it’s time for America’s 50 million school parents to simply pull their kids out of school until we have better gun laws.”

Rather than rein in such a ridiculous proposal, Cunningham’s former boss in the Obama administration — former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan — actually doubled down and endorsed the idea as both “brilliant” and “tragically necessary.”

“This is brilliant, and tragically necessary,” Duncan said. “What if no children went to school until gun laws changed to keep them safe? My family is all in if we can do this at scale. Parents, will you please join us?” . . .

In an interview with The Washington Post, Duncan attempted to explain his “radical idea,” which he admitted was intended to be provocative but was nevertheless an “aggressive approach” to reform gun laws that was worthy of consideration.

“I’m open to other ideas, I’m open to different ideas, but I’m not open to doing nothing,” he added. “We will see whether this gains traction, or something does, but we have to think radically. (Read more from “Obama Education Secretary: Don’t Teach Children Until Gun Control Achieved” HERE)

Trump’s Team Gets Payback for Rubio on Venezuelan Assassination Plot

By Politico. When one of Venezuela’s top leaders was suspected of conspiring to assassinate Florida Sen. Marco Rubio last year, the reaction of the United States was uncharacteristically tame.

Stiffer sanctions against Venezuela languished at the National Security Council. And Diosdado Cabello Rondon, the vice president of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, wasn’t touched by targeted sanctions even though the U.S. government has accused him of being a narco-trafficker.

But all of that changed in the past five days as new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton began flexing their muscles in the run-up to Sunday’s elections in Venezuela — elections the U.S. government called a “sham” perpetrated by “kleptocracy.”

On Friday, Cabello and his relatives had his assets frozen by the U.S. Treasury, and on Monday, further U.S. investments in Venezuela were limited as the one-two punch of sanctions heralded a hawkish new era for the Trump administration, while revealing an enhanced role for Rubio as a Trump foreign policy emissary and ally. State Wants to Offer Free Health Care to Illegal Aliens

California is poised to become the first state in the nation to offer full health coverage to undocumented adults even as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown by separating families at the border.

The proposal — which would build on Gov. Jerry Brown’s 2015 decision to extend health coverage to all children, regardless of immigration status — is one of the most daring examples yet of blue-state Democrats thumbing their nose at President Donald Trump as they pursue diametrically opposed policies, whether on immigration, climate change, legalized marijuana or health care. . .

But at a time when Trump is already attempting to re-energize state Republican voters — he met with California conservatives at the White House last week to strategize against the state’s sanctuary policies — the initiative might be risky. For starters, it will be costly: The annual price tag to expand Medicaid benefits to poor adult immigrants without legal status is projected at $3 billion annually. Some also worry that extending health coverage could make California a magnet for undocumented immigrants from other states.

“It would give Republicans relevance in California they would never have before,” said David McCuan, a political analyst and political science professor at Sonoma State University. He suggested the proposal would energize Republican voters, who make up a quarter of the electorate, as well as conservative-leaning unaffiliated voters. Another Bombshell Dropped About Stormy Daniel’s Lawyer

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Stormy Daniels’ attorney Michael Avenatti has reportedly defaulted on over $440,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest that he had personally promised to pay the Internal Revenue Service. The Los Angeles Times reported, Avenatti had promised to pay the money as part of a bankruptcy settlement for his law firm.

The Times wrote, “Under the Jan. 30 bankruptcy settlement, Avenatti personally agreed to pay the IRS $2.4 million in back taxes, penalties and interest, court records show. Nearly $1.3 million of that was for payroll taxes that his law firm withheld from employees, but did not turn over to the government. Avenatti has paid $1.5 million of what was due, but missed the deadline last week for paying the next installment of $440,291, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles.”

In another bankruptcy issue for Avenatti’s firm, the Times stated the Eagan Avenatti law firm was ordered to pay a $10 million judgment because Avenatti and his firm failed to pay Jason Frank, a lawyer who used to work for them. Avenatti reportedly personally promised to pay Frank $4.85 million; Avenatti allegedly agreed that if he missed the deadlines he would accept a Bankruptcy Court judgment ordering his law firm to pay Frank $10 million. That includes the $4.85 million that he’d personally guaranteed. (Read more from “Another Bombshell Dropped About Stormy Daniel’s Lawyer” HERE)

Backlash: Left-Leaning Poll Has Really Bad News for Democrats

A new poll released on Monday from a left-leaning news publication showed that the Democrats are paying dearly for their disastrous week last week where they lied about President Donald Trump’s comments regarding violent MS-13 gang members.

The Reuters Poll revealed that the double-digit lead that the Democrats held over Republicans last month in generic ballot voting for the 2018 midterms among registered voters is now completely gone as Republicans have opened up a six-point lead over the Democrats.

The poll, for the week ending on May 20, shows Republicans at 40.7 percent with Democrats falling down to 34.5 percent. This is the first time Republicans have taken the lead in Reuters’ poll in approximately a year. (Read more from “Backlash: Left-Leaning Poll Has Really Bad News for Democrats” HERE)

ICE Director Blasts Dems: Don’t Call Us Anti-Immigrant

The acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) slammed Rep. Nanette Barragan (D-CA) on Tuesday after she falsely accused the agency of being “anti-immigrant. . .

“Now we love to talk about this issue about the MS-13 gangs, we love paint immigrants as criminals,” Barragan said. “That is not the complete facts and that is very offensive for me to see continuing to happen, is continuing to message this is anti-immigrant agenda.”

“There are many of lots of good immigrants, and then I hear this rhetoric ‘more DACA like people,’ guess what,” Barragan arrogantly exclaimed. “DACA like people are the people we need in this country, they serve this country, they’ve gone to college, they produce and they contribute to the economy so to put them into the same category is completely offensive.” . . .

“First of all, no one on this panel is anti-immigrant, we are law enforcement officers that are enforcing the law that you all enacted, so to sit there and say we are anti-immigrant is just wrong,” Homan responded. “We are just enforcing the laws, if you think it’s okay to for them to enter this country and they shouldn’t be arrested that’s just wrong.” (Read more from “ICE Director Blasts Dems: Don’t Call Us Anti-Immigrant” HERE)
