China Ties Raise Questions for Biden’s Pick for Top Defense Post

Joe Biden’s pick for a top Pentagon post works at a research center partnered with China’s Peking University, a school that has long been eyed as a security risk by western intelligence.

Colin Kahl, whom Biden tapped for undersecretary of defense for policy, has served as a senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University since the beginning of 2018. The institute oversees the Stanford Center at Peking University in northern Beijing, which opened in 2012.

Peking University, which is run by former Beijing spy chief Qiu Shuiping and has been linked to multiple espionage cases in the United States, recently updated its charter to require loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party, according to an NPR report. The school has also been ramping up its student and faculty surveillance system in what China watchers see as part of the government’s broader crackdown on independent scholarship.

Kahl is not the first Biden nominee whose employer has business entanglements in China. Biden’s pick for secretary of state, Antony Blinken, cofounded the consulting firm WestExec, which helped U.S. universities raise money from China without running afoul of Pentagon grant requirements, the Washington Free Beacon reported last month. WestExec scrubbed the details of this work from its website over the summer. (Read more from “China Ties Raise Questions for Biden’s Pick for Top Defense Post” HERE)

Missing 17-Year-Old Built Snow Cave to Survive Until Rescuers Arrived

A 17-year-old in British Columbia who went missing while snowmobiling has been found safe after he survived by building a snow cave until rescuers could find him.

The unidentified boy had been snowmobiling when he was separated from his group, according to the South Cariboo Search & Rescue.

Family and friends waited for the teen but he failed to show, prompting them to alert the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, according to CNN. Some of the group began searching for the teen while others went to go alert South Cariboo Search & Rescue.

Meanwhile, after numerous failed attempts to find his group along with the fact that he was not familiar with the area, the young man decided to build a snow cave for shelter until rescuers could find him. Authorities Arrest Soldier Accused of Trying to Help ISIS Ambush U.S. Troops

A United States Army Private First Class has been charged with attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist group, and attempting to murder U.S. military service members, the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced Tuesday.

Both the charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release stated.

The charged 20-year-old, Cole James Bridges, a Stowe, Ohio native, joined the U.S. Army around Sep. 2019 and began researching and consuming online jihadist propaganda, after which he expressed support for ISIS and jihad on social media, according to the DOJ.

Bridges then began interacting with an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) employee, posing as an ISIS supporter in touch with ISIS fighters in the Middle East, around Oct. 2020.

During those interactions, he expressed frustration with the U.S. military and his desire to assist ISIS, the DOJ reported.

WATCH: President Trump Delivers Farewell Address

President Donald Trump issued a farewell address to Americans on Tuesday, where he celebrated the successes of his administration and expressed optimism for the nation’s future. . .

The president began by thanking his family, along with Vice President Mike Pence and the entire Pence family, as well as law enforcement and the U.S. military before extending his gratitude to the American people for what he referred to as the “privilege” of serving as commander in chief.

Reflecting back on when he first took office, the president said:

“Four years ago I came to Washington as the only true outsider ever to win the presidency. I had not spent my career as a politician, but as a builder looking at open skylines and imagining infinite possibilities. I ran for president because I knew there were towering new summits for America, just waiting to be scaled. I knew the potential for our nation was boundless as long as we put America first.

America had given me so much, and I wanted to give something back. Together with millions of hardworking patriots across this land, we built the greatest political movement in the history of our country. We also built the greatest economy in the history of the world.”

Democrats Pledge to Fight Trump Rule Ensuring Banks Won’t Refuse Service to Conservatives

In its final days, the Trump administration is seeking to disrupt the way progressive activists increasingly impose their will on big business: through banks controlling the loan lifelines to the economy.

A regulation just finalized (update) aims to prevent lenders from blackballing businesses in industries opposed by the left by requiring banks to demonstrate that their loan decisions are “based on quantitative, impartial risk-based standards,” rather than political or reputational concerns.

he proposed Fair Access to Financial Services Rule (FAFSR) is a response to successful pressure campaigns waged by environmental groups and congressional Democrats, which culminated in every major American bank refusing to finance drilling projects in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), despite such drilling being authorized by President Trump in 2017.

Bryan Hubbard, a spokesman for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, told RealClearInvestigations that the rule codifies longstanding OCC guidance on banks’s obligation to provide equitable access to their services, and will ensure that banks are not “terminating entire categories of customers.”

The rule has been published in the Federal Register, but it may be short-lived with the end of Trump’s term. Many Democrats oppose the measure and they will have 60 legislative days to disapprove the rule by a simple majority vote, as provided under the Congressional Review Act. Bombshell U.S. State Department Report Reveals Evidence of the Origin of COVID-19

The U.S. State Department announced last Friday it has evidence that researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), a laboratory in Wuhan, China, became sick in fall 2019 with flu-like symptoms. This has led U.S. officials to believe the researchers may have been infected with COVID-19 as a result of a lab experiment.

“This raises questions about the credibility of WIV senior researcher Shi Zhengli’s public claim that there was ‘zero infection’ among the WIV’s staff and students,” reads the State Department “Fact Sheet: Activity at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

The main theory pushed by the Chinese government and health organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control, National Institute of Health, and World Health Organization is that the virus jumped from an animal to a human in Wuhan before spreading around the world. However, the new information from the State Department adds evidence that the virus may have accidentally leaked from the WIV, a hypothesis that has been dismissed by China, the corporate media, and health officials as a “conspiracy theory.”

The fact sheet says WIV began conducting experiments in 2016 on a coronavirus that originated in bats and is closely related to the virus currently spreading. The State Department also says WIV has collaborated on “secret projects” with the Chinese military.

“Despite the WIV presenting itself as a civilian institution, the United States has determined that the WIV has collaborated on publications and secret projects with China’s military,” the fact sheet says. “The WIV has engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017.” (Read more from “Bombshell U.S. State Department Report Reveals Evidence of the Origin of COVID-19” HERE)

2 National Guard Members Removed From Biden Inauguration

Two Army National Guard members have been removed from the inauguration security mission after vetting found they had ties to far-right fringe groups, a U.S. official told ABC News Tuesday.

The two Guard members are among the 25,000 National Guard troops who have been sent to Washington to augment security at the inauguration in the wake of the violent Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol.

The two Guardsmen were removed from the mission after vetting conducted by the FBI determined they had ties to far-right extremist groups, the U.S. official said.

No details were immediately available about which State Guard units the two belonged to or about the nature of of the alleged ties. (Read more from “2 National Guard Members Removed From Biden Inauguration” HERE)

Poll Shows Republicans See Failure Coming for Biden

A new poll found Republicans out there – somewhere – who believe that Joe Biden will be “very successful” in his effort to unify the country, as he promised during his campaign.

But not very many, according to the annual Civility Poll commissioned by the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service.

In fact, only 2% had that belief, and not a single Republican thought Biden would be “extremely successful.”

The institute presumed the 2020 election was conducted fairly, accusing President Trump and his supporters of a “stubborn” refusal to “accept the will of the people.”

It also notes the “unprecedented insurrection in the nation’s capital” and charges that it was ” encouraged and incited … by the president and his supporters.” (Read more from “Poll Shows Republicans See Failure Coming for Biden” HERE)

Washington Post: Blacklist Fox News ‘As We Do with Foreign Terrorist Groups’

In a Monday op-ed, the Washington Post called on heavyweight telecommunications corporations to shut down conservative cable news outlets including Fox News, One America News, and Newsmax TV, comparing the need to do so with that of shutting down foreign terrorist influencers.

The essay, penned by prominent Trump critic Max Boot, a Post columnist and CNN global affairs analyst, begins by explaining how merely holding the president accountable for “his role in inciting this violent insurrection” is “insufficient.”

“There is a whole infrastructure of incitement that will remain intact even after Trump leaves office,” Boot writes. “Just as we do with foreign terrorist groups, so with domestic terrorists: We need to shut down the influencers who radicalize people and set them on the path toward violence and sedition.”

The essay then heaps praise on the recent purging of conservative voices on social media platforms by tech giants, hoping that broadcast media will follow suit.

“Anyone who cherishes our democracy should be grateful to the management of Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites for their newfound sense of social responsibility,” the op-ed reads. “We should expect at least the same level of responsibility from broadcast media — and in particular from Fox News, which has the largest reach on the right.” (Read more from “Washington Post: Blacklist Fox News ‘As We Do with Foreign Terrorist Groups’” HERE)
