WATCH: Black GOP Lawmaker Responds Calmly to Heckler Accusing Him of Racism While Campaigning for Trump

In a display of composure, Texas state Representative Wesley Hunt, a black Republican lawmaker, responded to a heckler who accused him of being “racist” during his campaign speech for former President Trump in Iowa on Monday.

As Hunt spoke at a caucus site near Des Moines, a disruptive audience member shouted accusations, claiming that Hunt was “degrading himself” and “turning his back” on the black community. The heckler, also appearing to be black, questioned Hunt’s alignment with Trump on Martin Luther King Day, stating, “How can a black man stand here and talk to us about a racist?”

Undeterred by the interruption, Hunt calmly addressed the audience, highlighting his background and the importance of character over skin color. Members of the audience promptly intervened, escorting the heckler out as Hunt continued his speech.

“I come from a district in Houston, Texas, that’s a majority white district, and I won by 30 points,” Hunt asserted, emphasizing that his success was not based on race but on the content of his character. Quoting Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, Hunt conveyed the message that judgment should be based on character rather than external factors.

“When I walk into rooms like this, I don’t see race, color, or creed, I see my fellow Americans that must join together in the fight to save our country,” Hunt expressed, highlighting the unity needed for the common goal. He also acknowledged the loyalty he observed from President Trump.

Taking to social media later that evening, Hunt shared details of the incident, describing the heckler as an “enraged man” attempting to disrupt his speech by shouting the familiar accusation that Trump is “racist.” Hunt, however, emphasized that the people of Iowa, akin to President Trump, judged him based on his character rather than skin color, especially on Martin Luther King Day.

In his post, Hunt concluded by stating, “The anti-Trump movement is in full-blown meltdown.”
