Former UFC Fighter Dies in Tragic Accident at 33
Former UFC flyweight contender Geane Herrera tragically passed away following a motorcycle accident on Saturday in Tampa, Florida. He was 33 years old.
According to reports from multiple sources, the accident occurred around 10:45 p.m. when Herrera collided with the back of another vehicle at a high speed on Gandy Bridge, as confirmed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to TMZ.
Subsequently, Herrera’s motorcycle struck a concrete barrier, ejecting him from the vehicle. Despite emergency response efforts, Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene.
Herrera, who was on the verge of celebrating his 34th birthday, made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on August 25, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 73, where he faced Ray Borg. Although he suffered a defeat via unanimous decision in that bout, he bounced back three months later with a victory over Joby Sanchez by TKO.
Following his tenure in the UFC, Herrera transitioned to Absolute Championship Berkut in 2018. He later made his mark in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship in 2021, securing a notable victory over Abdiel Velazquez by TKO.
In the wake of Herrera’s untimely passing, his family established a GoFundMe campaign, and tributes poured in on social media platforms to honor the late MMA fighter. In a heartfelt statement on the GoFundMe page, his family expressed profound sorrow over their loss, describing Herrera as a vibrant individual with a zest for life and a passion for making a positive impact in the world.
“Our family is devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Geane Carlos Herrera known in the professional fighting world as ‘La Pulga’, whose life was cut way too short at only 33 years old,” the family wrote. “Geane leaves behind a 16-year-old son, his 3-month pregnant girlfriend, mother, father, sisters, a brother and a family that loves him and will deeply miss him.”
