Winter Woes: 65% of Americans Hesitant to Buy Electric Cars
As a winter freeze sweeps across the United States, a recent poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports sheds light on the hesitancy of Americans to consider purchasing electric vehicles (EVs). The findings indicate that 65 percent of American adults are unlikely to consider buying an EV for their next car, with 37 percent expressing that they are “not at all likely” to make such a purchase. The poll highlights concerns surrounding the practicality of EVs during adverse weather conditions.
The survey brings attention to the fact that, despite ongoing efforts to promote electric vehicles, a significant majority of Americans remain unconvinced of their viability. Less than 3-in-10 respondents expressed openness to the idea of purchasing an EV for their next vehicle.
Notably, the poll underscores the correlation between income levels and EV consideration. Approximately 52 percent of respondents earning at least $200,000 annually expressed a likelihood of purchasing an EV for their next car, with 33 percent stating that they are very likely to do so. On the contrary, over 7-in-10 working and lower-middle-class Americans, earning between $30,000 to $50,000 annually, revealed that they are not considering buying an EV. Among them, 46 percent specified that they are “not at all likely” to opt for an electric vehicle.
The reluctance towards EVs is exacerbated by recent reports of drivers experiencing difficulties with their electric cars during the winter freeze. Instances of EVs becoming stranded at homes and on the sides of roads have been reported, raising concerns about the reliability of these vehicles in cold weather.
In the Chicago, Illinois area, Tesla charging stations have witnessed a buildup of electric cars rendered immobile due to the freezing temperatures. These incidents add to a growing list of challenges faced by EV owners, particularly during winter weather conditions.
