The son of Republican Florida Rep. Carlos Gimenez was arrested Wednesday after allegedly assaulting Miami city commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla at a popular steakhouse in Coral Gables.
It is unclear why Carlos J. Gimenez, a lawyer and lobbyist, allegedly slapped the unsuspecting Portilla at Morton’s Steakhouse on Wednesday afternoon. The Gimenez and Portilla families have a long history in Miami politics, according to the Miami Herald, which described the two as “members of powerful political families with ties going back more than a decade.”
Portilla called the act “cowardly” and admitted he wasn’t aware the smack was coming, according to the Miami Herald.
Statement on today: “It was more like a flick of his wrist from behind me when I was having lunch as he cowardly approached me from behind and ran away. This guy is not known as a very courageous guy. Actually he’s quite a coward and appeared to be under the influence.”

French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday that his government would add at least six nuclear power plants to its arsenal in the coming decades.
“We are fortunate in France to be able to count on a strong nuclear industry, rich in know-how and with hundreds of thousands of jobs,” Macron said during remarks in the city of Belfort earlier in the day, France 24 reported.
“What we have to build today is the renaissance of the French nuclear industry because it’s the right moment, because it’s the right thing for our nation, because everything is in place,” Macron said.
Nuclear power, which France has relied on more than most Western nations, is at the center of the country’s net zero ambitions, according to France 24.
Macron said the government would study plans for another eight reactors, potentially increasing the number of new plants to 14 within the coming decades, France 24 reported. The popular crowdfunding site GoFundMe has taken down yet another conservative donation campaign.
As donations for the “Freedom Convoy” trucker protest in Ottawa, Ontario, reached $10 million on Feb. 4, GoFundMe pulled the plug on it and took the page down, alleging violence and unlawful activity as an excuse.
To add insult to injury, the company wasn’t originally planning on returning the donated funds from the canceled page unless asked. Instead, GoFundMe claimed it intended to distribute the money to charities the truckers selected. After massive public pushback—especially from a number of states’ attorneys general—the platform relented and said it would automatically return the funds.
GoFundMe’s excuse for closing the donations page down doesn’t pass the smell test, because it has a long history of deplatforming conservative causes while conspicuously leaving leftist crowdfunding efforts alone.
Consider a case from back in November 2020, when the site canceled a campaign to erect a billboard in California advertising a book critical of puberty blockers for kids. Local parents tried to get a sign erected that would have read “Puberty is not a medical condition,” along with a photo of the book “Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters” by Abigail Shrier.
GoFundMe offered no explanation beyond claiming the campaign went against the site’s user rules.
In March of last year, it censored another cause for purely political reasons: A women’s rape crisis center in Vancouver, British Columbia, had crowdfunded $7,000 before GoFundMe killed the page. The page was started by a short-lived internet community called “Super Straight” that wanted to support the one rape crisis center in the city explicitly for biological women. That ran afoul of GoFundMe’s liberal sensibilities regarding transgender people, so the page had to go.
While GoFundMe has ramped up its efforts against conservatives in recent years, the practice tracks back to the site’s early days.
In April 2015, The Daily Signal reported a pair of stories about bakers Aaron and Melissa Klein and florist Barronelle Stutzman, who had their GoFundMe campaigns stripped from the platform after they refused to provide service for gay weddings. The Kleins’ story is notable insofar as it ushered in a change in policy directly responsible for today’s problems.
Prior to the Kleins, GoFundMe’s terms of service prohibited “campaigns in defense of formal charges of heinous crimes, including violent, hateful, or sexual acts.” After they removed the Kleins’ page, the terms were updated to include “discriminatory acts.”
To the leftists in charge at GoFundMe, anything contrary to their narrative can be construed as “hateful” or “discriminatory,” and therefore, ripe for takedown.
GoFundMe’s bias in deciding what stays and what goes on its platform becomes even more evident when one looks at the types of violent leftist content that’s allowed to remain.
Numerous funding campaigns for violent Antifa and Black Lives Matter rioters have been allowed to remain up on the site while conservatives who have done nothing “wrong” except go against leftist dogma are frequently deleted.
The double standard employed by platforms like GoFundMe over what is acceptable is dangerous. American democracy cannot survive a system where only one political ideology can support causes it likes.
Thankfully, however, there are burgeoning alternatives. As of this writing, the Canadian truckers have raised more than $6 million on the Christian crowdfunding site GiveSendGo. While it would be preferable if GoFundMe would drop its ideological bias and accept donations to non-leftist causes, in the meantime conservatives should financially support causes they agree with through whatever means necessary.

A homeless San Francisco man said during an interview with author Michael Shellenberger that the city pays him to be homeless and boasted about having a cell phone with Amazon Prime and Netflix in a video posted Wednesday to Twitter.
“If you’re gonna be homeless, it’s pretty f**kin’ easy here” the homeless man, named James, said to Shellenberger during their interview. “I mean if we’re gonna be realistic, they pay you to be homeless here” he continued.

A Catholic mom in Northern California enrolled her daughter in a public charter school. During her initial Zoom classes, the girl, an incoming freshman who had not yet stepped foot in the school due to COVID-19, was asked her name and “preferred pronouns.”
She chose a male name and male pronouns. The school then routinely used this information without informing her parents, and then began to socially transition the child—the first in a series of steps culminating in a so-called “sex change.” . . .
And that’s just the tip of the proverbial non-binary iceberg. The gender category “non-binary” now appears on all student information forms. Few parents, reared in a prior generation, realize that “non-binary” means “unlimited gender choices.” The California Department of Education defines “non-binary” as anything beyond the historic “male-female” binary understanding of gender—new terms for a new age, including “transgender,” “non-gender,” “intersex,” “agender,” “gender-queer,” “gender fluid,” “Two Spirit, bigender,” “pangender,” “gender nonconforming,” or “gender variant.” Really.
The California Department of Education says these genders are ever expansive, ever evolving and ever changing, and that children can self-certify or choose their own gender. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention defines “gender nonbinary” as “gender creative,” meaning children can create or make-up their own gender, and these non-conforming imaginary genders are marginalized minorities. . .
The California Teachers Association adopted a policy in January 2020 stating students should be able to access hormone therapy without parent consent, for the sake of “equity.” This is already a reality for foster youth starting at age 12, thanks to Assembly Bill 2119. Also, according to Assembly Bill 1184, minors can bill their parents’ insurance without their parents’ consent for gender-affirming care, which includes hormone therapy or “sex-change” operations. Two Republican senators say the State Department impeded an investigation into Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings by “inappropriately” classifying emails about his work in Ukraine.
Sens. Chuck Grassley (Iowa) and Ron Johnson (Wis.) in a letter exclusively obtained by the Washington Free Beacon wrote that the department “improperly” classified an explosive document about Hunter Biden’s work for Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian energy company whose owner was investigated for bribery.
“Recent records have come to light confirming that the State Department withheld records from our offices and improperly restrained us from making information public by inappropriately classifying information during our investigation into conflicts of interest involving Hunter Biden,” they wrote to Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The email, sent by State Department official George Kent, makes reference to a bribe paid to Ukrainian officials to shut down an investigation into Burisma’s owner, Mykola Zlochevsky. Grassley and Johnson allege that both President Joe Biden and his son used their influence in the United States to snag lucrative business deals.
Biden has been dogged by Hunter Biden’s shady business dealings since the 2020 presidential campaign, although he has always denied that either he or his son engaged in any wrongdoing. The email sought by Grassley and Johnson, however, seems to imply that career State Department employees thought Hunter Biden’s conduct was improper. Dr. Leana Wen, a CNN medical analyst and the former head of Planned Parenthood, is facing loads of backlash on social media for her recent calls to roll back Covid-19 restrictions. And she’s getting it from both sides.
As Julio reported yesterday, Wen told CNN anchor John Berman that she supports off-ramps to mask mandates, particularly in schools, because “the science has changed.”
“We know that vaccines protect very well against Omicron, which is the dominant variant,” Wen said Monday. “Everyone 5 and older have widespread access to vaccines and we also know about one-way masking. The idea that even if other people around you are not wearing masks, if you wear a high-quality mask, that also protects you, the wearer, too … I don’t think anyone really is saying, no one should ever wear masks, but rather that the responsibility should shift from a government mandate imposed from the state or local district of the school, rather it should shift to an individual responsibility by the family who can still decide that their child can wear a mask if needed.”

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is asking three major credit card companies not to approve payments for gun kits purchased online.
Gascón is tying the purchase of gun parts kits to the construction of “ghost guns.”
Gascón released a statement Tuesday, the Pasadena Star News reported, which said:
American Express, Mastercard and Visa have the ability to go beyond what any law enforcement agency, legislature or city council can accomplish. We are asking these companies to join us in stemming the flow of ghost guns into our communities by preventing a ghost gun kit from being sold with a few mere clicks on a smartphone or computer.

Russian President Vladimir Putin raised the specter of nuclear war over Ukraine this week, a threat that strikes Western observers as both “crazy” and an effort to rig the diplomatic game in his favor.
“He goes pretty far,” Atlantic Council visiting fellow Petr Tuma, a career Czech diplomat seconded at the Washington, D.C.,-based think-tank, told the Washington Examiner. “It’s crazy to even mention something like this.”
Yet Putin broached the subject during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, who had traveled to Moscow in search of a way to avert a major new Russian offensive against Ukraine. It’s a shocking rhetorical maneuver by conventional diplomatic standards, but trans-Atlantic officials and analysts regard it as just the latest Kremlin effort to use the threat of violence to gain leverage in negotiations with Western officials.
“He perceives that it works as a deterrent against the West, to talk about nuclear weapons, to talk about nuclear war,” a senior European official told the Washington Examiner. “It’s not something that you hear that often in the West because people have a long-held taboo that nuclear war is not winnable and that modern countries don’t threaten each other with nuclear war.”
Putin and President Joe Biden affirmed the principle that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,” but Western officials believe that Russian military strategists have developed nuclear weapons that they regard as substantial enough to win a conflict in Europe without provoking a full-scale nuclear response from the United States. Against that backdrop, Putin described a hypothetical crisis in which he would feel obliged to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia’s control of Crimea, a peninsula that he annexed from Ukraine in 2014. The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill subpoenaed former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro.
The Jan. 6 committee made the announcement on Wednesday, saying investigators are interested in records and information Navarro has about efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his work with Steve Bannon and others to delay Congress’s certification of the 2020 election.
“Mr. Navarro appears to have information directly relevant to the select committee’s investigation into the causes of the January 6th attack on the Capitol,” Rep. Bennie Thompson, chairman of the Jan. 6 committee, said in a statement. “He hasn’t been shy about his role in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and has even discussed the former President’s support for those plans. More than 500 witnesses have provided information in our investigation, and we expect Mr. Navarro to do so as well.”
In a statement to the Washington Examiner, Navarro blasted the inquiry as a “partisan witch hunt” and appeared to suggest he would not cooperate with the Jan. 6 committee. He claimed that news of the subpoena had been leaked to key members of the press before he received it. Navarro also questioned why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Capitol Police, and the Pentagon left the “perimeter unguarded” at the Capitol.
