Our Global Missions: Soldiers Serving as… Dental Hygiene Teachers in Niger

Why do we have a military?

This is the question nobody in Congress asks as they pass annual defense authorization and appropriations bills codifying our aimless deployments in well over 100 countries without an understanding of what each mission is accomplishing. Well, now that congressional Democrats are demanding answers from Trump on our posture toward Iran, they might want to also ask what in the world we are doing in places like Niger.

Last week, United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) put out a press release lauding the “first-ever dental hygiene course in Nigerien village.”

The U.S. Army 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion Civil Affairs Team 219, deployed to Nigerien Air Base 201, hosted the first-ever dental hygiene course for school children in the village of Tsakatalam, Niger, Dec. 14, 2019.

The team partnered with local Agadez city dentist, Dr. Mahaman Aicha, who taught the Tsakatalam Primary School children for the first time how to properly brush and floss their teeth and the importance of good oral health.

The release goes on to say how two airmen deployed to the 724th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron collected donations to purchase hygiene supplies as well.

These might sound like heartwarming PR efforts on behalf of the military, but the real question here is what we are doing in Niger to begin with? Why is there never any question about the interests of the United States, the prudence, or the legal authority to use our military as global civil engineers, doctors, and teachers?

However, what is worse than using our military for social work is using it for social work in a combat zone. Niger is not a safe place. It is full of Sunni terrorists who subscribe to the ideology of the Islamic State. We lost four soldiers there in October 2017 fighting with a dubious Nigerian force to combat the Islamic State. But nobody is asking how African terror groups affect us or have the ability to strike us or to shut down shipping lanes as Iran does. Nobody is asking which ground we are holding, on behalf of whom, and in what sort of sustainable way. And it’s not just Niger; we are doing this all across Africa. There are an estimated 6,000 troops on the African continent, largely highly trained special forces.

On October 4, 2017, 11 soldiers of the 3rd Special Forces Group were ambushed in Tongo, Niger, while stopping a convoy to meet with local villagers, resulting in four fatalities. A Pentagon report found that the soldiers were ill-prepared for the mission. Yet here we are over two years later, and we still have troops there engaging in social work. Why is there no desire in Congress to find out more about this mission? Why are there only legal and policy concerns about countering Iran, the one country that unambiguously attacked us multiple times recently?

Just this Sunday, with all the focus on Iraq and Iran, al-Shabab terrorists attacked a U.S. airstrip on the Kenyan coast, killing one American soldier and two American contractors. The adjacent base, Camp Simba, is used by our special forces to train Kenyan forces in the fight against Shabab. While Shabab, an offshoot of al Qaeda, is certainly a terrible collection of terrorists, what is it we hope to accomplish in Somalia and Kenya? Our operations there are all the more absurd when you consider that we’ve brought into our own country 130,000 Somali immigrants, and many of them have been caught with ties to terrorism. Some are suspected of funding those wars from our soil through welfare fraud! If it’s in our interests to go there, then by a factor of a million, isn’t it in our interests to ensure we cut off all immigration from these countries so they can’t come here, as well as fund the operations there?

It’s not that there is never a strategic purpose for us to have a base in a far-flung country as a logistical support for indispensable national security interests. And as part of that, there are times when it’s appropriate for the military to engage in community relations to build needed alliances. But we need an operational audit of where we have troops, why they are there, what is the threat assessment, and what is the scope of their mission. Once we know what it is we are doing there, then we can do a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether it’s prudent and worth the cost to continue. The fact that none of these questions are ever asked of our missions in Africa, Syria, Iraq, or Afghanistan, except for when it comes to Iran, demonstrates that the inquiry by Congress into the Soleimani drone strike is all about politics and not about concern for our troops and our national security.

As I wrote, Congress nearly unanimously signed off on $71.5 billion in “overseas contingency operations” in the defense appropriations bill and the entire status quo of military deployments in the defense authorization bill just a few weeks ago. No questions were asked. Now that there is concern by some about our posture toward Iran, why not conduct a full audit of what it is we are doing everywhere in the Middle East and Africa?

The Trump administration is in the process of looking at drawing down our troops from western Africa. But Congress, with nothing better to do this year, should spend a week auditing each part of the world and our presence there so the public can actually weigh in on the prudence of these deployments.

Were we to conduct such an audit, we’d likely discover that we are depleting our resources and resolve for what largely does not threaten us at the expense of deterring China and using the military at our own border. China remains the biggest looming conventional threat to our country, in addition to its asymmetrical warfare against us through cyber attacks and espionage.

Our border has cartels, transnational gangs, and scores of previously deported sex offenders and murderers coming over every day. Border Patrol catches some of them, as we see from daily press releases, but many of the most sinister elements successfully infiltrate, and we never know about it until one of them is arrested in one of our communities. Although these criminals might not sound as cool as Islamic terrorist groups in the Middle East, they affect our security and safety exponentially more than what goes on overseas. Remember, just one year’s worth of detainers lodged by ICE included aliens charged with 2,500 homicides, 56,000 assaults, 14,500 sex crimes, 5,000 robberies, and 2,500 kidnappings. That doesn’t even begin to factor in the scope of the drug traffickers killing 70,000 people a year.

Shockingly, the same pencil-heads in Congress and in the various executive departments who believe it’s totally within constitutional authority to deploy soldiers as dentists in Africa believe we can’t aggressively deploy our military to combat the Mexican cartels at our own border who enable all this death and carnage in our communities.

Moreover, ultimately, foreign terror groups can only affect us here if we have an open border with Mexico or bring them in through our broken visa system.

We need not spend trillions deploying soldiers all over the world to engage in social work and dental hygiene lessons in order to protect Americans. We need only to put our interests first and stop self-destructing through immigration policies while using our military where it can most effectively protect Americans. Keeping us out of the insufferable tribal wars in other countries will preserve our soldiers, treasure, and deterrent against China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. That is what our Founders envisioned as the purpose of our military. They certainly never envisioned them as the global dentists. Bernie Sanders Compares Trump Order to Kill Soleimani to Putin Assassinating Russian Dissidents

Democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders compared President Donald Trump’s decision to order an airstrike on Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani to Russian President Vladimir Putin having dissidents executed.

During an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Sanders said the killing of Soleimani will cause “chaos” and “instability.”

“This guy, you know, was, as bad as he was, an official of the Iranian government,” Sanders said of Soleimani. “And, you unleash—then, if China does that, you know, if Russia does that, you know, Russia has been implicated under Putin with assassinating dissidents. So, once you’re in the business of assassination, you unleash some very, very terrible forces. And, what I’m seeing now in this world as a result of Trump’s actions, more and more chaos, more and more instability.”

Whether one agrees with the Soleimani killing or not, Sanders’ comparison is objectively nonsensical. With the strike against Soleimani, the U.S. eliminated a military leader from an adversarial nation who was responsible for American deaths, which is obviously quite different than if the president had ordered the assassination of a domestic political opponent. Is Biden Considering “Cocaine Murkowksi” as a Potential Vice Presidential Running Mate for 2020?

According to the Hill today, some are speculating that Joe Biden might be considering Lisa Murkowski as his vice presidential running mate for 2020:

Choosing a Republican for vice president could ignite a fire on the floor at the Democratic National Convention. As Biden himself claimed last week, “You know, there are some really decent Republicans that are out there still. But here is the problem right now, of the well known ones. They have got to step up. You know what I mean?”

Only a handful of Republicans come to mind to run with Biden, and they are Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Vermont Governor Phil Scott, and former Ohio Governor John Kasich, the man who refused to be on the ticket with Trump, much to the consternation with Trump. All five of these politicians have demonstrated the capacity to buck Trump and the Republican Party.

Murkowski voted against ObamaCare repeal and Brett Kavanaugh. She has expressed her disapproval of the willingness of McConnell to act as a lackey for the White House in the impeachment inquiry. Then there is her own political history. In 2010, Murkowski won reelection as a write in after losing the Republican primary to Joe Miller . . .

But Murkowski has all sorts of troubling history. In a national race, unprotected by her minions in Alaska, you’d be sure to hear about her alleged cocaine use, being a representative for a company caught stealing bar examination results (after she herself failed the bar exam four or five times, and then mysteriously passed the exam after using the company’s stolen exams), illegal campaign donations, backing blanket amnesty for illegals, supporting Planned Parenthood’s butchery of the unborn, lying repeatedly about her support for Obamacare, practically assaulting a reporter, having her henchman Tuckerman Babcock lie to the FEC (Joe Miller was cleared of the false charges) and file a false police report, vote fraud, and numerous other issues. She’s clearly unfit for her current office, not to mention the Vice Presidency.

But more power to Biden. His vice presidential running mate would fit in perfectly with his friends and family. And lose him a few million votes.

Soleimani Was a Monster, Wanted Atomic Cloud Over Tel Aviv; I Saw Qasem Soleimani’s Brand of Evil Firsthand — It’s Worse Than You Could Possibly Imagine; Iran’s General Replacing Soleimani Vows Revenge for U.S. Killing

By Jerusalem Post. Julian Reichelt, the editor-in-chief of best-selling German newspaper Bild, on Friday authored a barn-burning commentary praising US President Donald Trump for authorizing a military strike to eliminate Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

“President Trump has freed the world of a monster whose aim in life was an atomic cloud over Tel Aviv. Trump has acted in self-defense – the self-defense of the US and all peace-loving people,” wrote Reichelt.

He added that “the Iranian terror godfather Qassem Soleimani stood for a world that no peace-loving person can want: a world in which you can be torn apart by a bomb at any time because you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The commentary singled out Soleimani’s scorched-earth campaign in the Syrian war: “A world in which entire cities are wiped out – like Aleppo. In which bloodthirsty militia go from door to door and execute civilians.”

Reichelt noted the potential of Iran’s regime to carry out terrorism in Germany and Israel, “in which the kindergartens in Germany could burn up in fireballs at any time because its children are Jewish. In which Israel is under threat of extinction every day.” (Read more from “Soleimani Was a Monster, Wanted Atomic Cloud Over Tel Aviv” HERE)

I Saw Qasem Soleimani’s Brand of Evil Firsthand — It’s Worse Than You Could Possibly Imagine

By CBN News. Just how evil was Tehran’s former top terror chief, Qasem Soleimani? While reporting in Iraq in 2015, I came face to face with his brand of terrorism and it’s been seared in my mind ever since. . .

I met the family in the above picture at an IDP camp outside of Erbil, Iraq. The father explained their desperate situation, homeless because of the latest ISIS reign of terror.

His body was severely burned, his son lay silent on the cot in the tent. When we asked about these things, he explained how Iranian Shia militias had killed his wife, tortured him and his children, including his young boy. The militias, who would have been under the control of Qasem Soleimani, proceeded to drill holes in the boy’s legs as a means to further threaten the father. . .

Qasem Soleimani was in charge of about 15,000 in Iran’s Quds force, which is mainly responsible for “military” operations that take place out of the country. . .

While it is perfectly understandable to be concerned about what happens next with Iran, it’s hard to look at it as anything but positive that Soleimani is no longer walking the face of this planet. Iran’s General Replacing Soleimani Vows Revenge for U.S. Killing

By Fox News. Esmail Ghaani, the Iranian general taking over for Qassem Soleimani, told state television Monday that “actions will be taken” to revenge the death of his predecessor.

Since Soleimani’s killing last week, Iran has issued a series of threats to the U.S.

President Trump has responded by vowing that any Iranian strike would be perhaps met with a “disproportionate” response.

“God the almighty has promised to get his revenge, and God is the main avenger,” Ghaani said, according to the Associated Press. “Certainly actions will be taken.”

Ghaani, 62, is the new leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force. He had served as Soleimani’s deputy commander since 1997 – and the Treasury Department says he has used his power to direct funding toward terrorist groups like Hezbollah. Iran offers $80million bounty for Donald Trump’s head after death of general

By Milo Boyd. An $80million bounty has been placed on Donald Trump’s head in Iran in the wake of General Qasem Soleimani’s assassination.

During the televised funeral, an unidentified eulogist speaking on official state television said one US dollar should be tabled for every Iranian in the country, with the cash going to whoever killed the US President.

“Iran has 80 million inhabitants. Based on the Iranian population, we want to raise $80million (£61million) which is a reward for those who get close to the head of President Trump,” it was announced . . . (Read more about Iran’s threatened revenge HERE)

Golden Globes Host: Hollywood in No Position to Lecture About Anything. You Know Nothing About the Real World; Tells Hollywood: You’re All Perverts (VIDEO)

By Breitbart. Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais skewered Hollywood during his opening monologue of the annual award show on Sunday, cracking jokes about virtue signaling celebrities, Apple sweatshops, and (their “friend”) Jeffrey Epstein.

“You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg,” Gervais told the A-list crowd at the top of the show. . .

Gervais started by complimenting Apple’s The Morning Show, starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, but soon switched into attack mode.

“A superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing made by a company the at runs sweatshops in China,” the actor-comedian said.

“If ISIS started a streaming service, you all would be calling your agents.”

Ricky Gervais at Golden Globes: You’re All Perverts

By Breitbart. Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais delivered his opening monologue on Sunday at the awards event, and called the room full of A-list stars, directors, and producers “perverts.”

“In this room are some of the most important TV and film executives in the world, people from every background,” said Gervais. “But they all have one thing in common: they’re all terrified of Ronan Farrow. He’s coming for you. He’s coming for you.”

“Look, talking to all you perverts,” he added, “it was a big year for pedophile movies. ‘Surviving R. Kelly.’ ‘Leaving Neverland.’ ‘The Two Popes.’” (Read more from “Ricky Gervais at Golden Globes: You’re All Perverts” HERE)

Ghislaine Maxwell Under Ex-Special Forces Guard; New Photos Released of Jeffrey Epstein’s Body

By Fox News Business. British socialite and former Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell is reportedly being guarded by former U.S. Navy SEALs amid conflicting reports about where she’s hiding out.

Maxwell faces “credible death threats” and is being guarded by former U.S. Navy SEALs in safe houses in the American Midwest, a source told The Daily Mail.

“There has been so much rubbish written about Ghislaine. The reality is she receives multiple, credible death threats on a daily basis. The hate mail is sometimes 2 [feet] high,” the source said according to The Daily Mail. “She is constantly moving. Her life is in danger. She is being guarded by the best of the very best and that includes former U.S. Navy SEALs. She’s not under the protection of any government. She’s on her own.”

That report conflicts with what a source told Page Six, claiming that Maxwell is outside of the U.S. and moving between countries including the United Kingdom and Israel. (Read more from “Ghislaine Maxwell Under Ex-Special Forces Guard” HERE)

New Photos of Jeffrey Epstein’s Body, Sheet He Used to ‘Hang Himself’

By New York Post. Newly revealed photos show Jeffrey Epstein’s face frozen in death and the torn strip of orange prison bedsheet he allegedly used as a noose to hang himself.

The photos — which include the convicted pedophile’s corpse both naked and in a hospital gown laying on a gurney — were released by CBS TV’s “60 Minutes’’ Sunday as part of a segment that included an interview with former New York City Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Baden.

Baden, who was hired by Epstein’s brother, Mark, to observe an autopsy on the disgraced financier, was asked if he thought he killed himself in his Manhattan jail cell in August — as the current ME says — or was the victim of something more sinister.

“The forensic evidence released so far, including autopsy, point much more to murder and strangulation than the suicide and suicidal hanging,” Baden replied.

The former ME noted that Epstein was taken to an emergency room when he was found in his cell, calling that “not normal protocol’’ and noting it disrupted the scene. (Read more from “New Photos of Jeffrey Epstein’s Body, Sheet He Used to ‘Hang Himself’” HERE)

WATCH: Russian Pranksters Dupe Maxine Waters by Calling as Greta Thunberg Claiming to Have Dirt on Trump

. . .The 81-year-old career politician — who has been calling for Trump’s impeachment since the day he took office — appears to have been tricked by Russian pranksters into thinking she was talking to Greta Thunberg, who reportedly claimed she had dirt on Trump.

The pranksters, Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov, who go by the stage names Vovan and Lexus, recently posted a video of them talking to a woman, who identified herself as Maxine Waters in the audio. One pretends to be Greta, the other to be her father.

The conversation begins with the fake Greta telling Waters that she is in North Carolina at a climate summit calling for the protection of the fake “Chon-Go-Chango” islands. . .

“It was a really terrible meeting in the U.N. building in September with him. And I had nightmares afterwards. It’s terrible,” fake Greta told Waters. “I saw him in the hallway. He was with security and I shouted at him, ‘Sign the Paris Climate Agreement again!’ He came over, he leaned in towards me, and said softly, ‘Listen carefully to me, little girl. You will never achieve your goal, like the congressional goal, trying to accuse me.’”

“He said you will never achieve your goal? Oh my goodness.” Waters said, sounding shocked. “Did you ask him if he would rethink signing the Paris Climate Agreement? Is that your question to him?”

Here’s How the Airstrike That Killed Soleimani Affected Trump’s Approval Rating

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has increased sharply following the impeachment proceedings against him and his decision to order the airstrike that killed Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s top terrorism architect.

According to RealClearPolitics, Trump’s average approval rating now stands at 45.3 percent, up from a low 41.6 percent just two months ago after Democrats began their formal impeachment investigation.

Since the airstrike that killed Soleimani, Trump’s approval has risen one percent.

The rating is nearly a three-year high, the Washington Examiner noted. Trump’s approval rating has not been this high since Feb. 2017, just two weeks after his inauguration when he notched a 46 percent approval rating. U.S. General Says We’re Leaving Iraq, Defense Secretary Says Not so Fast

By Daily Wire. The United States military has informed Iraq this week that it is preparing to “move out” of the country, according to an official letter. . .

President Donald Trump stated over the weekend that if Iraq forces the U.S. military to leave that it will be hit very tough sanctions.

“We have a very extraordinarily expensive air base that’s there,” Trump said of Iraq. “It cost billions of dollars to build. Long before my time. We’re not leaving unless they pay us back for it.”

“If they do ask us to leave, if we don’t do it in a very friendly basis, we will charge them sanctions like they’ve never seen before ever. It’ll make Iranian sanctions look somewhat tame,” Trump continued. “If there’s any hostility, that they do anything we think is inappropriate, we are going to put sanctions on Iraq, very big sanctions on Iraq.” (Read more from “Report: U.S. Forces Preparing Rapid Withdrawal out of Iraq” HERE)

‘Mistake’: Pentagon Says Iraq Withdrawal Letter Was Not Authorized

By Politico. The Pentagon on Monday disputed that U.S. troops are preparing to withdraw from Iraq — after a leaked letter from a U.S. general suggested plans are underway to prepare troops to leave following the Iraqi Parliament’s Sunday vote calling for their removal.

The misfire added yet another layer of confusion to an already murky situation days after the region erupted in response to the U.S. drone attack that killed Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani at the Baghdad airport. It also raised new questions about the Pentagon’s intentions as it faces new threats from Iranian militias in Iraq even as it seeks to defeat the remnants of the Islamic State terrorist group.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, took the usual step of holding an impromptu question-and-answer session with reporters at the Pentagon after media outlets reported a top US. general on Monday informed an Iraqi counterpart that American personnel are initiating steps for a possible withdrawal. . .

But Milley, agreeing the letter was a “mistake,” told reporters it was only a draft and had not been sent. He said he had just spoken to Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command, about it.

U.S. Informs Iraqi Government About Repositioning of Coalition Forces

By NPR. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper announced on Monday that some forces are being repositioned inside Iraq, not leaving the country.

Two other U.S. officials told NPR that some are going to Kuwait temporarily.

The troop movement — signaled by heavy helicopter traffic out of a U.S. base in central Baghdad — was coupled with confusion about a letter sent by the U.S. military to Iraqi officials. That letter said the movements were in response to the Iraqi call for U.S. forces to leave the country, and the letter implied a withdrawal was underway. Late Monday, Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters that the letter was “poorly worded.” . . .

The Pentagon press office underscored the message, saying in a tweet, “There has been no change in US policy with regard to our force presence in Iraq. We continue to consult with the Iraqi government regarding the defeat-ISIS mission and efforts to support the Iraqi Security Forces.”

Secret Service ‘Aware’ of Actor’s ‘Death’ Threat Against President Trump

By Daily Caller. The United States Secret Service is “aware” of an Instagram post from comedian George Lopez that many perceived as a threat on President Donald Trump’s life.

“The Secret Service is aware of the [post] made by Mr. Lopez,” a U.S. Secret Service representative told the Daily Caller via a statement. “The Secret Service takes all threats against the President and or any of our protectees seriously, and as a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving protective intelligence.” . . .

“We’ll do it for half,” the comedian wrote, leading many to wonder if the detail in charge of protecting the president was aware of the statement. (Read more from “Secret Service ‘Aware’ of Actor’s ‘Death’ Threat Against President Trump” HERE)

Qassem Soleimani Eulogist Offers $80 Million Bounty for Donald Trump’s Head During Iranian General’s Funeral

By Newsweek. A eulogist speaking during funeral events for assassinated Iranian general Qassem Soleimani has called for a multi-million dollar bounty on President Donald Trump as mourning continues for the slain Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander.

Huge crowds packed the streets of Tehran on Monday as the regime held a funeral service for Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad on Friday. He was the commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force, and oversaw Iran’s foreign military strategy and covert operations.

His funeral procession travelled through various cities and sites in Iraq and Iran on its way to Tehran. In the eastern Iranian city of Mashhad, enormous crowds attended the event, which was broadcast live on Iran’s state-owned Channel One TV station.

At one point, an unidentified eulogist called for a bounty to be placed on Trump’s head. “We are 80 million Iranians,” he said. “If each one of us puts aside one American dollar, we will have 80 million American dollars, and we will reward anyone who brings us [Trump]’s head with that amount.” (Read more from “Qassem Soleimani Eulogist Offers $80 Million Bounty for Donald Trump’s Head During Iranian General’s Funeral” HERE)
