By BBC. The murder of ex-Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in 2006 in the UK was “probably” approved by President Vladimir Putin, an inquiry has found.
Mr Putin is likely to have signed off the poisoning of Mr Litvinenko with polonium-210 in part due to personal “antagonism” between the pair, it said.
Home Secretary Theresa May said the murder was a “blatant and unacceptable” breach of international law.
But the Russian Foreign Ministry said the public inquiry was “politicised”.

Like clockwork, political campaigns degrade to low-rung rhetoric for some candidates. They also bring old acquaintances out of the woodwork who didn’t like you then and don’t like you now.
Such is the reported case for Conservative Presidential candidate Ted Cruz and a film writer in Hollywood. Conflicts in principles and ideas appear immediately apparent in any sentence that mentions Conservative and Hollywood. The Senator and the writer, Craig Mazin, have a very brief history. They were reportedly on the same dorm at Princeton during Freshman year. Mazin has been dogging Ted Cruz with attacks that surfaced nationally during the Conservative’s 2012 run for the Senate.
A skilled trash-talker, who weaponizes Twitter, screenwriter Mazin resorts to schoolyard taunts and name-calling worthy of a bully who enjoys attacking someone who rises above the ugly fray and chooses to walk away. Say, a Christian, perhaps. In a less profanity tinged missive about Cruz, Mazin recently tweeted: “Getting emails blaming me for not smothering Ted Cruz in his sleep in 1988. What kind of monster do you think I am? A really prescient one?”
What is really going on here? What would possess an adult film writer to resort to the pettiness and mean-spirited jargon of a pubescent adolescent? What could a Hollywood screenwriter have against a Senator who runs for office in the defense of faith, freedom and patriotism? The question likely answers itself.
Assuming that Mazin is for freedom and patriotism, possibly it is the issue of faith that so sticks in his craw. It is well reported that the young Ted Cruz was principled in prayer in his college days. Senator Ted Cruz hides his Christianity from no one. It is safe to say that his faith is an irritant at best for a writer of scripts that the Motion Picture Rating (MPAA) assigns an R-Rating for “graphic nudity, violent images and drug use.” It can be said for Mr. Mazin that he stands by his “graphic nudity, violent images and drug use” in his films and his juvenile, low-grade tweets.
There are others with differing opinions. Famed Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz (a renowned Liberal) calls Ted Cruz “off-the-chart brilliant”. Now, that’s got to hurt a guy like Mazin whose tweeted claim to fame is: “In 1988, I puked all over Ted Cruz’s textbooks.”
A closer look at Senator Ted Cruz and his support of the faith may only give Mazin fuel for his Twitter fire. Possibly, however, there may be a lesson in it for who Ted Cruz is today as opposed to how Mr. Mazin chooses to conjure him up during the college years. Assuming that it is the Christian faith that has Mazin all rankled, he may find the following highly disturbing. That Cruz put his years of law school to work and prevented a “takeover” of churches by the Obama administration could create a full-on, tweet blast from Mr. Mazin.
While Mr. Mazin was writing Hollywood films which can have great cultural impact, both good and bad, Ted Cruz was already protecting faith and freedom of religion before ever announcing a run for the Presidency.
In 2013, Senator Ted Cruz (TX-R) exposed unprecedented power grabs by the Obama administration in multiple cases before the Supreme Court. Cruz stood firm against Obama’s Justice Department in these cases and successfully helped block an attack on the faith and its pastors:

On the Obama Justice Department’s hit list was freedom of religion with Christianity as the primary target. Long a bane to the Progressive Left (that rejected God from it 2012 Presidential convention) is that the Ten Commandments – that are foundational to the Judeo-Christian faith – served as the biblical inspiration for both the U.S. Constitution and Capitalism. True Christians stand with Israel much to the disdain of Democrat Presidents from FDR, to Jimmy Carter, to Barack Obama. True Christianity is a blockade to bigotry and tyrannical aspirations.
In an outrageous attempt to increase its power, the Obama administration attempted to usurp the right of a church to choose its own pastors. In the case, Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church & School v. EEOC, the Justice Department reportedly argued before the U.S. Supreme Court that it “had the right to oversee a church’s choosing of ministers.” The Supreme Court foiled Obama’s egregious attempt to curtail a fundamental right of churches. In a 9-0 opinion, the justices sided in favor of the Lutheran Church.
The day Barack Obama swore on the Bible to uphold the U.S. Constitution – which includes the freedoms of speech and religion – the assault began. Obama’s gibes at Judeo-Christian belief and scripture are well documented. Gaining control of who preaches in Christian churches would have given the Obama administration control of the message. Obama acolytes in the pulpit would be in position to convolute the scripture to serve their political ideologies.
Socialist-Progressives in the Democrat Party are going to great lengths to escape the authority of God, preferring to live by their own countenance and self-devised morality while attempting to subjugate or eliminate God out of society. In a head-fake to voters, many assume the role as pretenders of faith. Those who outsmart themselves in matters eternal, including those in Washington and Hollywood, go so far as to cherry-pick the Bible and mismatch or purposely convolute scriptural intent to serve their political agenda.
That Ted Cruz professes the Christian faith may cause any number of Hollywood screenwriters angst. If so, that explains it. Though just being conservative, or simply independent in thought, has always been enough to tee-off any Hollywood liberal worthy of their far-Left credentials. Third-grade name calling or vitriolic rhetoric, whether from the Left or from the Right, that does not promote serious discussions — does the country no service. The message to Mr. Mazin is that the pillars of faith on which Ted Cruz professes to firmly stand cannot be knocked down. Whether a bitter sounding, former acquaintance can cheapen the national dialogue, that is a whole other matter entirely. For more than a decade the U.S. government has known that “Arab extremists” are entering the country through Mexico with the assistance of smuggling network “cells,” according to State Department documents obtained by Judicial Watch that reveal among them was a top Al Qaeda operative wanted by the FBI. Some Mexican smuggling networks actually specialize in providing logistical support for Arab individuals attempting to enter the United States, the government documents say. The top Al Qaeda leader in Mexico was identified in the September 2004 cable from the American consulate in Ciudad Juárez as Adnan G. El Shurkrjumah. The cable was released to Judicial Watch under the Freedom of Information Act.
The new intelligence records were released as a result of an ongoing JW investigation into the critical national security threats on the southern border, specifically those created by Islamic terrorists teaming up with Mexican drug cartels to infiltrate and attack the U.S. In response to JW’s reporting in the last two years the Obama administration—through various spokespeople, including FBI Director James Comey—has vehemently denied that Islamic terrorists are operating in Mexican towns near American cities or entering the U.S. through the famously porous southern border.
The State Department documents, which include substantial redactions supposedly to protect classified and personal information, contradict this. JW obtained them as part of an investigative series into Shukrijumah, an Al Qaeda operative also known as Javier Robles. In December, 2014 Shukrijumah was killed by the Pakistan Army in an intelligence-borne operation in South Waziristan. But before he died Shukrijumah helped plan several U.S. attacks, including plots to bomb Oprah Winfrey’s studio and detonate nuclear devices in multiple American cities. For years Shukrijumah appeared on the FBI’s most wanted list and, despite being sought by the agency, he crossed back and forth into the U.S. from Mexico to meet fellow militant Islamists in Texas. JW has reported that, as one of the world’s most wanted terrorists, Shukrijumah piloted an aircraft into the Cielo Dorado airfield in Anthony, New Mexico. The illegal immigrant who was arrested this week in Arizona for a sex crime against a three-year old girl, was being shielded from repatriation by President Barack Obama’s 2012 ‘Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals’ program, according to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The little girl was found Monday, while duct-taped, inside a trash bag, and covered in feces in a closet in an apartment occupied by Francisco Rios-Covarrubias. He was charged with kidnapping, sexual conduct with a minor, felony child abuse, and sex trafficking. The child’s mother was also arrested.
Rios-Covarrubias was caught after he allegedly offered the girl for sex to another man, who subsequently notified the police . . .
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Sen. Jeff Flake say their committee has information that Rios-Covarrubias was protected from repatriation by Obama’s 2012 decision to largely halt deportations of younger illegals, and to give them work-permits.
“According to information received by the Committee, 30-yr-old Rios-Covarrubias was a recipient of deferred action under the President’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program,” Grassley and Flake wrote in a letter Friday to DHS Sec. Dr. Ben Carson resumed his campaign for the GOP Presidential nomination Thursday, ending the temporary suspension of all campaign activities following a tragic crash involving his volunteers.
The accident took place in Iowa on January 19th, according to a statement issued by the Carson campaign.

“A van transporting three campaign volunteers and a Carson campaign employee hit a patch of ice and flipped on its side where it was struck by another vehicle,” the statement describes.
The campaign members injured in the crash, according to another campaign statement, were Braden Joplin, Drew McCall, Aaron Ohnemus and Ryan Patrick Shellooe.
Joplin, who was a campaign volunteer, succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The powerful blizzard packing gale-force winds, heavy snow and coastal flooding across the East Coast has left at least nine dead in storm-related accidents as of late Friday.
Five of the nine deaths occurred in North Carolina. Gov. Pat McCory said one person who was injured in an accident in Wilkes County Wednesday died and another motorist was killed in a separate crash on Interstate 95 in Johnston County. A 65-year-old woman hit an “extremely icy” patch and overturned her car eventually landing in a creek and dying, according to state Highway Patrol.
In Forsyth County, a 55-year-old woman was killed when she slid on the icy road way, crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into a pickup truck head on. A 4-year-old died Friday died after a pickup truck carrying his family spun out on Interstate 77 and crashed, State Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Baker said. Troopers said the boy was restrained in a child seat and died as a result of the impact.
In Tennessee, a car slid off the roadway due to speed and slick road conditions, killing the driver and injuring a passenger, the Knox County sheriff’s department said. A woman was killed after the vehicle carrying her and her husband slid down a 300-foot embankment Wednesday night, Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford. The woman’s husband was able to climb the embankment and call for help.
A man died in Kentucky Thursday after his car collided with a salt truck, state police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene on state Route 92 in Whitley Country. A Virginia man died Friday after his car went off the snowy George Washington highway and slammed into a tree, Officer Leo Kosinski said. Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is seeking to siphon evangelical voters from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, by revealing the senator’s inconsistencies in his faith.
Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, said tax records show that Cruz tithed less than 1 percent of his income to his church. Cruz and Huckabee are Southern Baptists, and that denomination’s doctrine states members are to tithe 10 percent of their income.
The tax returns are from Cruz’s 2012 senate race. According to Huckabee in one interview, “Cruz contributed less than 1 percent of his income to charity between 2006 and 2010 – a far cry from the 10 percent most evangelical leaders believe the Bible demands.” Huckabee said the amount given to his church demonstrates Cruz’s priorities in his life.
“I just think it’s hard to say God is first in your life if He’s last in your budget,” Huckabee said. “If I can’t trust God with a dime out of each dollar that I earn, then I’m not sure how I can tell Him that I trust him with my whole life.”
He said tithing demonstrates a person’s spiritual place . . .
Huckabee launched an attack on Cruz earlier in the week when he criticized the Tea Party favorite for meeting with New York gay hotel owners early in his campaign while stating he is against gay marriage. Huckabee’s criticism came after Cruz attacked “New York values” in criticizing leading GOP presidential rival Donald Trump. Peter Schiff has been credited as being one of the few financial analysts to predict the collapse of the housing and financial markets in 2008 and the subsequent financial recession. He is also the author of several popular books on our financial state as well as a stockbroker and the founder of schiffgold.com and Euro Pacific Capital.
This week, on Joe Miller’s radio show, Peter Schiff had a strong warning for all Americans, especially investors. He is predicting an imminent recession that will last longer and be more painful than the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Due to past policies and current issues, he contends there is no way the US can avoid this catastrophe.
He blames the Federal Reserve as the primary cause of this imminent recession. He points to the Fed’s seven years of zero percent interest rates and three rounds of quantitative easing. Now that the Federal Reserve is trying to ease up on the monetary stimulus, the terrible financial state the U.S. is really in will be revealed.
Schiff also maintains that we are in a far worse position because we currently hold much more debt than we did seven years ago. He analogizes U.S. financial strategy in accruing debt with countries like China and Russia to a huge Ponzi scheme. Our foreign creditors are on to the fact that it may be impossible for us to make good on that debt and have no desire to be part of a free-money-to-the-US scheme.
Schiff contends another major problem is that the US dollar is currently overvalued. Many countries are taking advantage of this high valuation by making moves to get rid of their United States dollars. As the world’s reserve currency, this overvaluation also creates instability internationally.
The only reason the U.S. hasn’t collided with economic disaster yet is, in Schiff’s opinion, the currency speculators. However, no matter what the speculators do, the dollar will eventually fall, as much as 30%. In a worst case scenario, the end result could be hyperinflation, wiping out most of the value of the dollar.
Schiff also reminded listeners that the dollar itself does not hold any intrinsic value. Its value is entirely contingent upon people’s confidence in it. Once people lose confidence in the dollar, its value will evaporate and will be worthless to purchase anything with, so political leaders do what they can to reinforce faith in it. A case in point is Obama’s State of the Union address where he falsely claimed that the economy had recovered. According to Schiff, these false reports that the economy has recovered are being used to prop up confidence in the dollar.
There are numerous indicators that the US economy is in serious trouble. At the beginning of this year several companies (Walmart, Macy’s, and Finish Line) all reported numerous store closures and massive layoffs. Walmart alone is expected to layoff 10,000 people. Other companies that do not have physical stores such as Yahoo and Johnson and Johnson have also announced layoffs that will affect thousands of more people. Finally, the percentage of adults in the labor force is at the lowest level in 40 years while wage gains for most workers has been a nonexistent. These are all indicators that the U.S. economy is in troubled waters.
What is Peter Schiff’s advice for U.S. investors? To protect against the imminent collapse, they should immediately divest themselves from the U.S. stock market and sink their money in international markets, gold and silver stocks, and other commodities.
Only time will tell whether Schiff has accurately predicted yet another financial catastrophe for the United States. One thing is sure: if he’s right about an imminent Second Great Depression, this nation – and probably the world at large – will experience an era of unprecedented political instability.

Looking ahead to the Iowa Caucuses on Tuesday, February 1, IVN predicts that Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders will win their respective caucuses. However, IVN further predicts that the parties will find a way to take these wins away from them.
Every election year, IVN makes at least one prediction about the outcome of a major race. In 2012, IVN called Florida for Barack Obama before any other news outlet. In 2014, IVN projected that U.S. Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.) was going to keep his seat in a hotly contested race against Republican Carl DeMaio.
This year, though the media reports a tight race going into the Republican and Democratic caucuses, IVN predicts that Trump and Sanders will take the most votes from caucus participants and win their respective contests.
Both Trump and Sanders have strong support, not only from members of the Republican and Democratic parties, but from voters who are fed up with the status quo and feel disenchanted or disenfranchised by the current political system or cannot find a home in any political party.
The Republican leadership has frequently rebuked the candidacy of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders is often at odds with the Democratic National Committee, which briefly denied him access to the party’s voter database in December and scheduled a limited number of debates on the weekend, an inconvenient time for a presidential primary debate.
