No Difference Between Fast Food, Protein Bars as Post-Workout Meals

questbarA recent study shows that eating a fast food meal after you work out is just as good for muscle-building as eating a protein bar. Of course it’d be nice to think that McDonald’s has switched its focus from greasy burgers to health supplements, but alas, that is not the case. Rather, sports supplements may not be all they’re cracked up (or marketed) to be.

As published in the “International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism,” the study examined how a post-workout meal affects a man’s muscle glycogen recovery. The researchers had 11 men perform an intense 90-minute workout, followed by a meal right after the workout, and then another meal two hours later. In each trial, the men’s meals were either sport supplements or fast food. The fast food meals consisted of hotcakes, hashbrowns and orange juice right after the workout (amounting to 2720 calories) and a hamburger, coke and fries two hours after the workout (amounting to 2845 calories). The sport supplement meals, on the other hand, consisted of Gatorade, Kit’s Organic PB and Clif Shot Bloks right after the workout (2775 calories) and Cytomax, Power Bar Recovery, PBCC and Power Bar Energy Chews two hours later (2678 calories). Tests measuring muscle growth, blood lipids and glucose showed that there was no difference between the fast food and sport supplement trials. In addition, participants noted the same level of discomfort or sickness following the meals.

This study seemingly backs up a 2009 study published in the “Journal of The International Society of Sports Nutrition,” in which the workout routines of 28 overweight or exercise-averse men were analyzed over the course of 12 weeks, along with their consumption of soy or whey protein. Results showed that neither type of protein was more effective for building muscle, and in fact there were no discernible differences between those 28 men and a third group which was given no added protein to their diet.

So if protein bars are essentially just as useful as fast food when it comes to post-workout nutrition, what is all the hype about? Naturally, there’s the protein factor. But all protein is not synonymous with health. In fact, many unhealthy products use the guise of “high-protein” labels to sell their highly processed, sugary content. For instance, the protein in many bars comes from soy protein isolate, which is made from processed soybeans. While natural soybeans can be a wonderful source of protein, processed soy is a whole other story. The processing of soybeans at high temperatures denatures the proteins, which essentially results in a low quality form of protein. In fact, most soybean meal (which is what’s used to make soy protein isolate) is used as livestock feed in the U.S. (Read more from “No Difference Between Fast Food, Protein Bars as Post-Workout Meals” HERE)

Disgusting: College Students Spit on Wounded Vet, Urinate on American Flag; University Apologizes

By Todd Starnes. Investigations have been launched at two universities over accusations that fraternity members taunted wounded war heroes, urinated on an American flag, and spit on a wounded veteran and his service dog in Panama City Beach, Florida.

The April 17 incident, involving Zeta Beta Tau fraternity members from the University of Florida and Emory University, has infuriated residents of Panama City.

“They were being treated like the Vietnam veterans were treated,” said Linda Cope, the founder of the Warrior Beach Retreat. . .

Cope tells me the fraternity members were staying in the same resort – and caused a night of mayhem. The college kids made derogatory comments about the warriors’ wives, threw items off balconies and desecrated an American flag.

She also said one of the warriors and his service dog were spit on. (Read more from “Disgusting: Frat Boys Spit on Wounded Vet, Urinate on American Flag” HERE)

Emory University Apologizes for Horrendous Frat Behavior

By News Herald. Emory University was appalled to learn of acts of disrespect and harassment that were directed at attendees of the Warrior Beach Retreat in Florida this past weekend.

Our brave veterans who have sacrificed much for our country deserve the utmost respect and appreciation for their service.

The disrespectful behavior exhibited by students toward our veterans is not acceptable and will not be tolerated by members of the Emory community.

When Emory received complaints that students from one of our fraternities might be involved, Campus Life administrators immediately began an investigation. To date, no evidence has been found to implicate Emory students in these reported incidents. If any members of our community are identified as being responsible, they will be held accountable for their actions by the university.

Emory University thanks veterans for the significant contributions they have made to our country, and for exhibiting the values that we hold with great respect within our university community. (Read more from this story HERE)

Community Shocked at Veterans’ Treatment

By Kelly Baumgarten. Twice a year Panama City Beach welcomes our wounded heroes into the community for the Warrior Beach Retreat, but an event aimed at honoring our nation’s veterans took a different turn at their hotel. . .

“This retreat has just been an eye opener. It’s been more amazing than I ever thought it would be,” said Gina Harden, the wife of a wounded veteran.

Our community has always gone above and beyond to give them a heroes welcome. However, during this Warrior Beach Retreat it was a different story when it comes to some of our visitors.

Some veterans say they now know how Vietnam Veterans felt when they came home. They say they were subjected to similar harassment by a group of college students.

“They actually spit on me and my service dog as well, and that’s just so disrespectful and it hurts. I come and I feel honored and I feel safe and that I belong, but now I feel like I’m defending myself,” said wounded veteran Nicholas Connole. (Read more from this story HERE)

Obama Admin Admits Illegal Alien Gang Member Who Killed ‘Top Model’ Not Deported Due to Obama’s Amnesty Program

Mirjana-Puha-e1429745768456-913x512The Obama administration confirmed that the illegal immigrant charged with the first degree murder of a contestant on America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) and two others had been granted amnesty under the president’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, also known as the “dreamer” policy.

Emmanuel Jesus Rangel-Hernandez and David Ezequel Lopez, both 19, are accused of triple homicides in the deaths of ANTM contestant Mirjana Puhar, 19; her boyfriend, Jonathan Alvarado, 23; and his roommate, Jusmar Isiah Gonzaga-Garcia, 21, on February 24, 2015, at Alvardo’s home in Charlotte, N.C.

As previously reported by Western Journalism, Sens. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa (Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee), first raised concerns about Rangel-Hernandez’s status a few days after the murders in a letter to Department of Homeland Security head Jeh Johnson. By the following month, Grassley and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., had confirmed that the murder suspect avoided deportation through the DACA policy.

Grassley and Tillis’ inquiry further revealed that Rangel-Hernandez had been placed in the removal process by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following drug charges in 2012, but his proceedings were dismissed in 2013 after his approval for Obama’s deferral program.

The senators added, “Whistleblowers allege that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services granted Rangel-Hernandez’s DACA application despite knowledge that he was a gang member.”

In light of their discoveries, the senators asked Sec. Jeh Johnson pointed questions, demanding to know why someone who was not eligible for DACA, due to his criminal record and gang membership, was allowed to stay in the country.

Grassley released U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) director Leon Rodriguez’s reply on Tuesday, in which he admitted, “Given the fact that the individual [Rangel-Hernandez] was a known gang member, his request should have been denied.” He further noted that, during their investigation, the USCIS identified others in the country under DACA who “merit further review.”

Grassley responded to USCIS’s admission, saying:

This statement by USCIS confirms what we have feared – that USCIS is not doing a thorough job reviewing the individuals who it allows to stay in this country under the President’s deferred action program. It’s no secret that USCIS staff is under intense pressure to approve every DACA application that comes across their desk, and based on this information, it’s clear that adequate protocols are not in place to protect public safety. The fact is that this tragedy could have been avoided if the agency had a zero tolerance policy with regard to criminal aliens and gang members.

Sen. Tillis added:

The flawed implementation of the President’s blanket deferred action program has created a loophole that allows dangerous criminals who came here illegally – even known gang members – to stay in the country. The USCIS needs to immediately start performing detailed criminal background checks to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Breitbart reports, as of March 20, 2015, the Obama administration had approved more than 866,638 DACA applications, 223,826 of which were renewals. (See “Obama Admin Admits Gang Member Who Killed ‘Top Model’ Not Deported Due to Obama’s Amnesty Program”, originally posted HERE)

Obama ‘Deflategate’ Joke Falls Flat

By Jordan Fabian. President Obama gave the New England Patriots a hard time about the “Deflategate” scandal on Thursday.

“I usually tell jokes at these events, but I was worried 11 of 12 of them would fall flat,” Obama joked during a ceremony honoring the Patriots’ Super Bowl title on the South Lawn.

The crowd let out an audible groan at the president’s jab.

The president conceded that the “whole story got blown a little out of proportion.”

The Patriots’ championship run was clouded by allegations that a team employee deflated 11 out its 12 footballs during the AFC Championship game. (Read more from this story HERE)

U.S. Military Hostile to Christians Under Obama; Morale, Retention Devastated [+video]

Soon there may only be atheists in the foxholes.

Christians are leaving the U.S. military or are discouraged from joining in the first place because of a “hostile work environment” that doesn’t let them express their beliefs openly, religious freedom advocates say.

Michael Berry, senior counsel at the Liberty Institute, a Texas-based legal organization dedicated to defending religious liberty in America, said recent high-profile cases of military chaplains facing punishment for private counseling sessions that reflected the teachings of their religion could cause devout Americans who are qualified for military service to think twice about joining the military.

In December, a chaplain for a Ranger training battalion received an administrative letter of concern after a soldier complained that he advocated Christianity and used the Bible during a mandatory unit suicide-prevention training session. The Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers said the chaplain “used his official position to force his personal religious beliefs on a captive military audience” in an article the group posted on its website.

And, last month, a Navy chaplain was removed from his post and may lose his career after some sailors complained about his private counseling, in which he reportedly advocated against homosexuality and sex outside of marriage.

This Just-Disclosed Heartbreaking Mistake Is a ‘Major Blow’ to Obama’s Touted Drone War

Though it reportedly happened months ago, the Obama administration just this morning (Thursday) revealed that two Western hostages held by terrorist kidnappers in Pakistan were killed in a strike on al-Qaeda by a U.S drone. The Wall Street Journal reports that this is “the first known instance in which the U.S. has accidentally killed a hostage in a drone strike.”

“The mishap represents a major blow to the Central Intelligence Agency and its covert drone program in Pakistan, which President Barack Obama embraced and expanded after coming to office in 2009.”

The two hostages reportedly killed in the January incident near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border have been identified as Warren Weinstein, an American, and Giovanni Lo Porto, an Italian. The strike on the suspected terrorist compound is also said to have killed al-Qaeda leader Ahmed Farouq, another American citizen. A separate strike in January reportedly led to the death of American-born al-Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn.

A USA Today article on the accidental deaths of the two hostages — both of whom had been held captive for years — notes that President Obama just recently decided to release the information, which had heretofore been classified.

“‘The operation targeted an al-Qaeda-associated compound, where we had no reason to believe either hostage was present, located in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan,’ [Josh] Earnest said in the statement. ‘No words can fully express our regret over this terrible tragedy.’”

Appearing before reporters after the Earnest statement announced the sad news, Obama took “full responsibility” for the incident and apologized on behalf of the government . . . (Read more from “BREAKING: The Heartbreaking Mistake Just Disclosed Is a ‘Major Blow’ to Obama’s Touted Drone War” HERE)

Fleet of Iranian Ships Heading to Yemen Turns Around After Being Tracked by US Warships [+video]

download (9)A nine-ship Iranian convoy believed to be laden with weapons bound for rebels in Yemen turned around Thursday after being followed by U.S. warships stationed in the area to prevent arms shipments, multiple sources in the Pentagon told Fox News.

The sources said the nine-ship convoy is south of Salalah, Oman, and now headed northeast in the Arabian Sea in the direction of home. The ships, which include seven freighters and two frigates, had sailed southwest along the coast of Yemen heading in the direction of Aden and the entrance to the Red Sea. The two Iranian warships escorting the convoy are Thondor Type 021-class missile boats and the other ships in the convoy are a mix of commercial vessels with some carrying shipping containers.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt, a 100,000-ton nuclear-powered aircraft carrier known as the “Big Stick” and her escort, the USS Normandy, a guided missile cruiser, have been shadowing the convoy for the past few days, the sources said.

Fighter jets taking off from the carrier have been relaying the convoy’s location to the U.S. Navy’s higher command since the start of the week.

Pentagon officials say the U.S. Navy set up the nine ships in a line parallel to the coast of Yemen stretching from the Bab-el-Mandeb Straight to waters south of Oman, which provide “continuous coverage” of the Iranian convoy. Carly Fiorina: ‘Clinton Cash’ Revelations Amidst Russian Uranium Deal Simply the ‘Clinton Way’

By Alex Swoyer. Former Hewlett Packard CEO and potential GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina is often critical about Hillary Clinton’s track record as secretary of state.

Thursday morning, Fiorina took to Facebook to criticize Clinton, the likely Democratic presidential nominee, for the new revelations regarding the Clinton Foundation’s donations exposed in Peter Schweizer’s book Clinton Cash.

“It’s the Clinton way: raking in millions from foreign governments behind closed doors while making promises about transparency that they never intended to keep. Now they’re scrambling to refile their taxes and account for her decisions as Secretary of State,” Carly stated. “The American people will have a choice. Are we going to demand trust and transparency from our leaders? Have we had enough of a ruling political class that doles out favors to the wealthy and well connected few?” (Read more from “Carly Fiorina: ‘Clinton Cash’ Revelations Simply the ‘Clinton Way'” HERE)

Cash Flowed to Clinton Foundation Amid Russian Uranium Deal

By Jo Becker and Mike McIntire. The headline on the website Pravda trumpeted President Vladimir V. Putin’s latest coup, its nationalistic fervor recalling an era when its precursor served as the official mouthpiece of the Kremlin: “Russian Nuclear Energy Conquers the World.”

The article, in January 2013, detailed how the Russian atomic energy agency, Rosatom, had taken over a Canadian company with uranium-mining stakes stretching from Central Asia to the American West. The deal made Rosatom one of the world’s largest uranium producers and brought Mr. Putin closer to his goal of controlling much of the global uranium supply chain.

But the untold story behind that story is one that involves not just the Russian president, but also a former American president and a woman who would like to be the next one.

At the heart of the tale are several men, leaders of the Canadian mining industry, who have been major donors to the charitable endeavors of former President Bill Clinton and his family. Members of that group built, financed and eventually sold off to the Russians a company that would become known as Uranium One. (Read more from “Russian Uranium Deal” HERE)

Miracle: Woman Wakes up Just Hours Before Family Was to End Life Support

download (6)Kent had lost hope that his wife would survive after he found her sick on the bathroom floor and doctors said the medication she needed to keep her organs functioning would likely result in her sacrificing her arms and legs.

Kent and his son, Ryan, watched helplessly for weeks as Teri’s tongue swelled and the tip of her nose, hands and feet turned black . . .

“We came to the conclusion as a family that the next day we were going to remove her from life support,” Ryan says . . .

That’s when she opened her eyes . . .

OB-GYN Dr. Jennifer Ashton explains that Teri had group A strep, which led to sepsis, which is caused when bacteria gets into the bloodstream and spreads throughout the body. Medication can lower the blood pressure to help prevent the infection from reaching and shutting down the vital organs, but if the arms and legs don’t receive enough blood, the tissue can die and the limbs have to be amputated. Offended Native American Actors Quit Adam Sandler Movie

US-ENTERTAINMENT-PREMIERE-MEN WOMEN CHILDRENA group of American Indian actors have walked off the set of an Adam Sandler movie production following complaints over stereotypes and offensive names.

Actor Loren Anthony told The Associated Press on Thursday that he and eight others quit the production of satirical western “The Ridiculous Six” after producers ignored their concerns about its portrayal of Apache culture.

Anthony says the script also included offensive Native American female characters named “Beaver’s Breath” and “No Bra.” He says producers told them to leave if they felt offended.

“Right from the get-go, it didn’t feel right. But we it let it go,” said Anthony, a Navajo actor who started work as an extra on the movie Monday. “Once we found out more about the script, we felt it was totally disrespectful to elders and Native women.”

“The Ridiculous Six” is produced by Sandler and Allen Covert and is slated for a Netflix-only release. Production began this month in Santa Fe and elsewhere in northern New Mexico. (Read more from “Offended Native American Actors Quit Adam Sandler Movie” HERE)
