Christians Form 24 Hour-a-Day Human Shield Around Church after Demolition Threat

Thousands of Chinese Christians have mounted an extraordinary, round-the-clock defence of a church in a city known as the ‘Jerusalem of the East’ after Communist Party officials threatened to bulldoze their place of worship.

In an episode that underlines the fierce and long-standing friction between China’s officially atheist Communist Party and its rapidly growing Christian congregation, Bible-carrying believers this week flocked to the Sanjiang church in Wenzhou hoping to protect it from the bulldozers.

Their 24-hour guard began earlier this week when a demolition notice was plastered onto the newly-constructed church which worshippers say cost around 30 million yuan (£2.91 million) and almost six years to build.

Officials claimed the church had been built illegally and used red paint to daub the words: “Demolish” and “Illegal construction” onto its towering facade.

The threat triggered a furious reaction in Wenzhou, a booming port city known for its vibrant Christian community, said to be China’s largest.

Democrats Joining Republicans in Protest Over Medicare Advantage Cuts

medicare1485Several Democrats — including some lawmakers whose re-election bids are seen as vulnerable in this year’s midterm races — are joining Republicans in calling for the Obama administration to stop proposed cuts to the Medicare Advantage program.

Administration officials plan to announce the 2015 rates for the program on Monday, reports The Hill, and could prove a sensitive issue as both parties are courting the senior citizens who tend to turn out in high numbers to vote in midterms.

Republicans say the program is a valid private alternative to Medicare, as it allows seniors to enroll in plans offered by private insurers, who are then directly paid by the federal government.

Until now, Democrats have complained that the plan receives a disportionate amount of money compared to the Medicare program, and Obamacare was partially funded through $200 billion in cuts over 10 years.

Opponents include Sens. Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, considered two of the Democratic Party’s most vulnerable senators seeking re-election. But some powerful Democrats are also speaking out, including Sens. Charles Schumer and Michael Bennett.

Ex-CIA Boss Says Emotional Opposition From Feinstein May Taint Agency Probe

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden on Sunday questioned the objectivity of a forthcoming report on the agency’s detention and interrogation programs, saying California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who ordered the probe, might have let her feelings about the issue get in the way.

Hayden zeroed in on Feinstein recently saying that declassifying the report would “ensure that an un-American, brutal program of detention and interrogation will never again be considered or permitted.”

Hayden told “Fox News Sunday”: “That sentence, that motivation for the report, may show deep, emotional feeling on the part of the senator. But I don’t think it leads you to an objective report.”

Feinstein, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which led the probe, responded sharply to Hayden’s remarks, saying the report is “objective, based on fact, thoroughly footnoted.”

“I am certain it will stand on its own merits,” she said, according to The Washington Post.

Planned Parenthood to Open $2M Mega-Facility in Florida, Local Residents and Doctors Upset

Planned Parenthood is spending $2 million to open a new 10,000 square foot abortion facility in Kissimmee – the largest yet in Central Florida – and local residents are begging city officials to stop them.

“We do not want a death factory in our back yard,” one resident said at a Tuesday city commission meeting, which attracted hundreds of citizens to protest the facility’s planned May opening.

Another begged, “Do not let one of our attractions be baby-killing.”

But Kissimmee Mayor Jim Swan told residents that local zoning laws leave the city with no option but to let the facility open as planned. “The folks moving in there are providing medical services, just like the person who just left, so there’s no rezoning. There’s no [change of] land use,” Swan told WFTV-9. “We had no authority. I know most folks don’t understand that.”

The majority of city officials told residents they were personally against allowing the abortion facility to open, and that they hoped to take the issue to the state legislature, at a minimum to address whether the facility will receive state funding.

Two Powerful Forces Join to Take Over GOP

Richard Viguerie, often called the “founding father of conservatism” for his advances in direct-mail fundraising, is on a campaign to take back the Republican Party from the “big government” advocates.

In that pursuit, he has a new book, “Takeover: The 100-Year War for the Soul of the GOP and How Conservatives Can Finally Win It,” coming out in just days.

Now he’s being joined in his effort by a force powerful enough to turn the tide in the 2010 elections and leave the U.S. House of Representatives in the hands of Republicans, including many that follow a conservative pathway.

That would be the tea party, represented here by Tea Party Patriots President Jenny Beth Martin, who wrote the forward for Viguerie’s book.

She explains that a “bitter political civil war” is happening now that ultimately will determine whether America remains a constitutional republic.

This Second Grader’s Revenge Against Common Core Math Will Make Your Day

By Eric Owens.

The litany of frighteningly stupid Common Core math worksheets never ends. Perhaps now, though, kids are starting to fight back in satisfyingly creative ways.

An alert reader sent The Daily Caller this image of her seven-year-old son’s perfectly reasonable homework answer. The boy attends a public elementary school in San Jose, Calif. He is in the second grade.

The math curriculum used by the school is GO Math! The publisher of GO Math! is Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

The parent who sent the homework question to TheDC noted that the curriculum aligns with the Common Core math standards.

Common Core: Anatomy of a Failure

By Bruce Deitrick Price.

When Bill and Melinda Gates go to Africa and see healthy people and sick people, they presumably have a single thought: what can we do to make everyone healthy? The problems are easily understood; goals can be clearly stated. Given a big commitment, there’s a high chance of success.

When Bill Gates looks at education in America and sees good students and bad students, he probably assumes that these variations are part of the human condition. That’s not a promising problem to focus on.

What fascinates Bill Gates is something else entirely: namely, the variety and incoherence from school to school, city to city, and state to state. It looks so messy and inefficient. And he thinks: a guy with my money and management skills should be able to organize all this disorder, turn it into an efficient machine, save the country, and make another fortune in the process.

Potentially all true.

But at that moment he has lost the game. Because he is no longer talking about educational goals, which must be our main concern. He is talking about standardization. He is talking about a tidier assembly line. (But nobody ever said that democracy is supposed to be tidy. Dictatorship is tidy.)

Bill Gates brought a programmer’s sensibility to education. There is a maximally efficient way to design a piece of software. So let’s do that, and stop all this other nonsense. Bad plan, even with the best of intentions.

‘Major Hurdles’ Ex-Obama Strategist Says Dems Face Midterm Defeat

Former top Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod acknowledged Saturday that Democrats face tough challenges in November, following a new Associated Press-GfK poll that shows voters increasingly appear to want Republicans over Democrats to control Congress.

“Every bit of evidence points to stronger GOP turnout in a low turnout elections this fall. Major hurdle for Ds,” Axelrod tweeted after the poll was released Saturday.

Thirty-seven percent in the poll last month chose Republicans, compared to 36 percent who said they would rather see Democrats in charge, with the November general elections seven months away.

Asked the same question in January, 39 percent favored the Democrats and 32 percent favored Republicans.

In the new poll, registered voters, who are most strongly interested in politics, favored the Republicans by 14 percentage points — 51 percent to 37 percent. In January, they were about evenly split, with 42 percent preferring Democrats and 45 percent the Republicans.

The Only Candidate Who Can Beat Begich is Miller

The Republican elite are skilled at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Their arrogance in dealing with social conservatives, libertarians and the Tea Party underscores the continued rejection of the “big tent philosophy” they allegedly promote. If you don’t adopt D.C.’s version of big-government conservatism and war-machine foreign policy, you can expect open opposition.

The worst perpetrator of this jihad on unconventional Republicans is Karl Rove (and his minions at the Crossroads committee).

And now, Rove and the rest of the D.C. consultants controlling the GOP are going to lose their best chance to win the U.S. Senate majority in a decade. How? Well, it starts with Alaska, where the GOP’s misguided Puritanism has created astounding resentment.

In Alaska, the GOP elite are concerned with two things: helping the companies that they run to get federal contracts and keeping control of a Tammany Hall-type patronage system in state jobs.

On top of that, the consultants in D.C. smack their chops at a race in Alaska because their favorite campaign tactic – saturating the market with TV ads – costs chump change in Alaska compared to many other media markets.

But this thinking has inspired a series of stiff-armed moves that have laid waste to the Alaskan GOP. Six years ago, for example, Mark Begich – a generally unaccomplished unknown – was able to snatch the U.S. Senate seat away from long-term Republican Ted Stevens.

This election cycle, Begich is vulnerable… but the GOP elite would rather play blood sports to stop Tea Party leader Joe Miller than simply beat Begich.

In the end, either Joe Miller will win or Alaska will re-elect Begich.

A Vicious GOP Backstabbing

How can I be so sure?

I’ve watched Alaskan politics closely since I agreed to speak at their Lincoln Day Dinners in Juneau and Fairbanks over a decade ago. And to understand why either Miller or Begich will win, you need to know what happened in 2010, in Miller’s last race, as it left a residual distaste for Republican elite tactics.

You see, Miller is typical of the candidates whom D.C. consultants dislike: He’s too smart, too pro-life, too anti-government and too anti-establishment. He’s also a decorated war veteran and a former Judge who cut his political teeth challenging the Alaskan GOP establishment owned by the Murkowski family. Alaska’s senior Senator, for example, is Lisa Murkowski, whom Miller challenged – and beat – in the 2010 Republican primary.

When Murkowski lost the GOP primary, the D.C. establishment circled the wagons, helping Murkowski run an independent race as a write-in. The Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, didn’t remove her from leadership even when she decided to launch her bid against the legitimate Republican nominee.

Meanwhile, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) manipulated the very grassroots, fresh-faced Miller campaign and used his name to raise money… then subsequently spent the money helping Murkowski win her race.

Time to Widen the Circle

But the plan has backfired this election cycle. Emotions run deep because of the viciousness of the Murkowski campaign against Miller. And this time, he’s the only GOP candidate who can win the general election. Polling shows that if anyone else wins the primary, scores of general election voters (in the double-digit percentages) intend to write in Miller as a protest against the aggressive backstabbing in 2010.

Miller’s opponent in the primary is a Karl Rove favorite, Dan Sullivan… a Bush administration appointee and member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the World Economic Forum’s “World Agenda Council.” Sullivan is committed to aggressive War Party policies in Syria and elsewhere. Yet Miller, a veteran tank commander who has seen bloody conflict, is much more wary of American intervention abroad.

Frankly, Miller cares more about America than he does the Republican Party, and many of his supporters are encouraging him to just skip the GOP primary and run an unconventional campaign as an independent. Even if he went this route, it would still be disastrous for the GOP’s hopes of recapturing the U.S. Senate.

With recent polling showing Miller’s candidacy beginning to surge in a matchup against Begich, the GOP’s best hope for picking up the seat is to embrace Miller as the Party nominee. The question is, will the Republican elite do their best to snatch defeat from victory again, or will they lengthen the tent cords enough to stand with a true conservative from Alaska?

Ready to Smirk

The communications giant Comcast announced in February that it would buy Time Warner Cable for $45 billion, creating the largest cable provider in America, with more than 33 million customers. That is about one third of the U.S. cable and satellite television market. FCC approval is required for the merger to go into effect. Critics of the deal say it would lessen competition and lead to even shoddier customer service. They are probably right, as all of us will soon find out, because there is little chance the merger will be stopped. Comcast, Time Warner, and their political fixers have spent years preparing for this moment—by buying off the Democratic Party.

Comcast, which employs more than 100 lobbyists, spent almost $19 million last year on lobbying activities. Its president and CEO, Brian L. Roberts, is a golf buddy of President Obama’s, and a Democratic donor who has contributed thousands of dollars not only to the president’s campaigns, but also to the Democratic Party of Pennsylvania, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the DNC Services Corporation, and to Steny Hoyer, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Bob Casey. Roberts’ executive vice president, David Cohen, is a former aide to Democratic bigwig Ed Rendell. Cohen skirts lobbying regulations through loopholes, has raised more than $2 million for Obama since 2007, and in 2011 hosted a DNC fundraiser at which the president called him “friend.” Cohen has visited the White House 14 times since 2010, including two visits to the Oval Office. He attended the recent dinner for President Hollande of France.

Cohen plays a major role in the Comcast Foundation, which has disbursed more than $3 billion since 2001, primarily to “groups that serve African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians” and other segments of the Democratic coalition. You will be surprised to learn that many of the groups to whom the Comcast Foundation has donated now support the proposed merger. Of the $33 million Comcast has spent on political campaigns since 1989, more than half, or some $18 million, has gone to Democrats. Barack Obama is number one on the list of the top ten recipients of Comcast’s largesse. There are four Republicans on the list.

Comcast’s in-kind contributions to the Democratic Party are more difficult to calculate. In a media environment that already tilts leftward, the NBC networks, which Comcast owns, distinguish themselves as especially pro-Obama. Comcast has one channel, MSNBC, which is almost entirely devoted to furthering the president’s agenda and the broader priorities of the American progressive movement. How do you put a price on the contributions of the invaluable Ed, Al, Chris, Chris, Rachel, and Lawrence? Where would the Democratic Party be today without The Reid Report? They give so much.

MSNBC shares staff and resources with NBC News, whose chief foreign affairs correspondent is a personal friend and tireless advocate of Hillary Clinton’s. NBC Sports, which during its recent Olympics coverage bent over backwards to apologize for Russia, has on its payroll the liberal pink eye victim Bob Costas, famous for advocating gun control during a sporting event. President Obama and Michelle Obama are regulars on the Jimmy Fallon show, and Joe Biden was the first guest on Seth Myers’s Late Night. Biden is always good for laughs.

EPA Tested Deadly Pollutants on Humans to Push Obama Admin’s Agenda

By Michael Bastasch.

The Environmental Protection Agency has been conducting dangerous experiments on humans over the past few years in order to justify more onerous clean air regulations.

The agency conducted tests on people with health issues and the elderly, exposing them to high levels of potentially lethal pollutants, without disclosing the risks of cancer and death, according to a newly released government report.

These experiments exposed people, including those with asthma and heart problems, to dangerously high levels of toxic pollutants, including diesel fumes, reads a EPA inspector general report obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. The EPA also exposed people with health issues to levels of pollutants up to 50 times greater than the agency says is safe for humans.

The EPA conducted five experiments in 2010 and 2011 to look at the health effects of particulate matter, or PM, and diesel exhaust on humans. The IG’s report found that the EPA did get consent forms from 81 people in five studies. But the IG also found that “exposure risks were not always consistently represented.”

“Further, the EPA did not include information on long-term cancer risks in its diesel exhaust studies’ consent forms,” the IG’s report noted. “An EPA manager considered these long-term risks minimal for short-term study exposures” but “human subjects were not informed of this risk in the consent form.”

Epa Conducted Pollution Experiments On Children

By Kerry Picket.

The Environmental Protection Agency is under fire for exposing children to pollution as part of an experiment at the University of Southern California.

This information is coming to light from the website junkscience.com after an investigation from the EPA’s Office of the Inspector General stated in a recent report that the EPA’s pollution experiments on older people, done at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, were more harmful to the subjects than what the EPA presented.

The IG also said that while the experiment’s subjects did consent to exposure, the “risks were not always consistently represented.”
