The Attempted Coup Reveals Turkey’s Instability. That’s Bad News for the US.

An attempted military coup in NATO member Turkey was foiled over the weekend.

At the time of writing, at least 265 people have been killed and another 1,400 wounded. Thousands of judges have been dismissed or arrested. Tanks shelled the parliament in Ankara and at one point President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was forced to address the nation using FaceTime.

After finally landing at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport, a serious, if not slightly shaken, Erdogan declared on national TV: “This uprising is a gift from God to us because this will be a reason to cleanse our army.”

He isn’t wasting any time. Since those words were uttered thousands of military personnel have been arrested, including several senior generals.

This weekend’s coup was the fourth since 1960 (the fifth if you count the so-called “post-modern coup” in 1997). In each previous case the military had been successful and democracy was returned to the people.

The Turkish military considers itself to be the guardian of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s (the founder of the Republic of Turkey) legacy of a Turkey based on secularism and Western orientation. Consequently, military coups have been a peculiar feature of the Turkish Republic when the country strays from these founding principles.

It is still not clear what motived the coup plotters, but some reasonable assumptions can be made.

It’s only logical that many in the military are increasingly worried that Erdogan has embraced a more conservative brand of Islam at the expense of state secularism. Recent crackdowns on press freedom by the government have not gone unnoticed either.

Erdogan has also been accused of flirting with Sunni Islamists for too long in Syria. The increase in Islamic State terror attacks across Turkey, and the seemingly reluctance of Erdogan to respond in a meaningful way, could have played a role in driving the coup.

The recent rapprochement with Russia could have tipped the military over the edge. It has been reported that the Turkish fighter pilot who shot down the Russian jet after illegally entering Turkey’s airspace last year was a participant in the coup.

In many ways this coup was doomed to fail from the beginning. It was a nameless coup with no public leader or mandate. Instead of protecting the citizens and the country’s democratic institutions, the coup plotters attacked civilians and shelled the parliament building. No major military base came under the full control of the plotters and no senior leader of the government was captured. There was no reason for the average Turk to get behind such shambles, and unsurprisingly very few did.

Paradoxically, the coup demonstrated how resilient democracy is in Turkey, at least for now. Like him or not, Erdogan is a democratically elected leader. All the major political parties, including the opposition, signed a joint letter condemning the attempted coup. Many Turks who protested in Istanbul’s Gezi Park in 2013 against Erdogan’s rule were there this weekend protesting against the coup plotters trying to overthrow Erdogan.

Under Erdogan, Turkey has been a contentious partner for the U.S., but it remains an important ally and NATO member. It is in America’s interests for Turkey to remain stable and become a productive leader in the region and beyond.

The fact that an attempted coup took place shows that Turkey is anything but stable. Instead of being a leader in the region, Erdogan will focus a lot of resources and energy at home bringing the plotters to justice. This invites Russia and ISIS, for example, to take advantage of the situation. This would be bad for Turkey and the U.S.

The coup might not have lasted long, but the fallout will be felt for years. Erdogan will use the coup to consolidate even more power. The political landscape in Turkey will be fundamentally changed. But if Erdogan responds to the coup by completely abandoning Turkey’s democratic principles, he will be planting the seed for the next coup.

The choices Erdogan makes now will impact Turkey for a generation. (For more from the author of “The Attempted Coup Reveals Turkey’s Instability. That’s Bad News for the US.” please click HERE)

TURKISH CHAOS: Fox Reports Coup Still Underway, Others Say Military Failed

At least 60 killed, more than 700 detained as Turkish military attempts coup

By FoxNews.com. Turkish President Recep Tayyip ensured the country Saturday that his government was in control after a coup attempt brought a night of explosions, dog fights, gunfire and arrest across the capital, leaving dozens dead, at least 150 people wounded and many of the country’s armed forces arrested.

An official in the president’s office said at least 60, including 17 police officers, were killed and at least 754 members of the armed forces were arrested.

Government officials said it appeared the coup had failed as Turks took to the streets overnight to confront troops attempting to take over the country. However, the sounds of explosions, including one that hit the parliament complex, continued to echo across the capital, Ankara, and Istanbul throughout the morning. CNN: Updates on Increasing Turkish Chaos

By Katie Hunt, Madison Park and Ralph Ellis. After a night of explosions, gunfire and tanks rolling along the streets, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Turkey Saturday that an attempted military coup was over and the government was in charge.

However, the sounds of fighting were still being reported in Ankara and Istanbul after the chaotic attempt by members of the military to wrest control from Erdogan.

At least 42 people died and 1,000 people were injured across the country. . .

Five generals and 29 colonels are relieved of their duty, according to Turkey’s Interior Ministry, and several high court judges are also being questioned.

At least one air force base in the country is still in control of the insurgents, according to the ministry. (Read more on the Turkish chaos HERE)

President Erdogan Blames Coup Attempt on U.S.-based Islamic Preacher

By Selcan Hacaoglu, Firat Kozok, and Onur Ant. Turkey’s leaders appeared to have largely quelled an attempted military coup as reports began to surface of rebel soldiers surrendering to police authorities, bringing to an end a bloody conflict that had tanks blockading roads, soldiers fighting police and warplanes bombing the parliament in Ankara.

In the clearest sign yet the government had gained the upper hand, about 50 rebel soldiers who had been blocking a critical bridge across a waterway in Istanbul, left their tanks and armored carriers with hands raised, according to images broadcast by NTV.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a speech from Istanbul’s international airport, blamed the coup attempt on a group of followers of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen. “They will pay a heavy price for their treason,” Erdogan said in comments carried by AHaber. A group backed by the preacher condemned any military intervention in Turkish domestic politics in a statement on its website. (Read more about the Turkish chaos HERE)

SAUDI GOVERNMENT IMPLICATED: Feds Release the Mysterious “28 Pages” Missing From 9/11 Report

Unleash the revisionist history. Congress released on Friday a long-classified report exploring the alleged ties of the Saudi Arabian government to the 9/11 hijackers.

The missing 28 pages from the 9/11 report begins as follows:

“While in the United States, some of the September 11 hijackers were in contact with, and received support from, individuals who may be connected to the Saudi Government…”

The “28 pages,” the secret document was part of a 2002 congressional investigation of the Sept. 11 attacks and has been classified since the report’s completion. As CNN reports, former Sen. Bob Graham, who chaired the committee that carried out the investigation and has been pushing the White House to release the pages, said Thursday he was “very pleased” that the documents would be released.

The pages, sent to Congress by the Obama administration, have been the subject of much speculation over what they might reveal about the Saudi government’s involvement in the attacks masterminded by terrorist Osama bin Laden when he led al-Qaeda.The pages were used by the 9/11 Commission as part of its investigation into the intelligence failures leading up to the attacks.

A telephone number found in the phone book of al-Qaeda operative Abu Zubaida, who was captured in Pakistan in March 2002, was for an Aspen, Colo., corporation that managed the “affairs of the Colorado residence of the Saudi Ambassador Bandar,” the documents show.

Osama Bassnan, who the documents identify as a financial supporter of two of the 9/11 hijackers in San Diego, received money from Bandar, and Bassnan’s wife also got money from Bandar’s wife. “One at least one occasion,” the documents show, “Bassnan received a check directly from Prince Bandar’s account. According to the FBI, on May 14, 1998, Bassnan cashed a check from Bandar in the amount of $15,000. Bassnan’s wife also received at least one check directly from Bandar.”

The top two members of the House Intelligence Committee cautioned that much of the information in the newly released pages were not “vetted conclusions.”

“It’s important to note that this section does not put forward vetted conclusions, but rather unverified leads that were later fully investigated by the Intelligence Community,” said Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif. and the committee chairman, in a statement. “Many of the Intelligence Community’s findings were included in the 9/11 Commission report as well as in a newly declassified executive summary of a CIA-FBI joint assessment that will soon be released by the Director of National Intelligence.”

Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the panel’s senior Democrat, said he hopes the newly released pages will reduce the continued speculation over Saudi involvement. “I hope that the release of these pages, with appropriate redactions necessary to protect our nation’s intelligence sources and methods, will diminish speculation that they contain proof of official Saudi Government or senior Saudi official involvement in the 9/11 attacks,” Schiff said in a statement. “The Intelligence Community and the 9/11 Commission…investigated the questions they raised and was never able to find sufficient evidence to support them. I know that the release of these pages will not end debate over the issue, but it will quiet rumors over their contents — as is often the case, the reality is less damaging than the uncertainty.”

Actually, a quick skim of the report indicates precisely the opposite.

The 9/11 Commission did not actually write the newly released pages. Instead, the pages were part of the material the panel reviewed. The commission’s chairmen have described the pages in the past as information based almost entirely on raw, unvetted material received by the FBI and handed over to House and Senate intelligence committees in 2002 as part of an earlier investigation of 9/11.

Current and former members of Congress have been calling for the pages to be declassified and released for more than a decade.

The 9/11 Commission concluded in its report that senior Saudi officials did not knowingly support the terrorist plot to attack the United States. The panel also found “no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution or senior Saudi officials individually funded” al-Qaeda.While the 9/11 Commission found no evidence that senior Saudi officials were involved in the 9/11 attack, the report did criticize the Saudi government for tolerating and sometimes fanning the flames of radical Islam by funding schools and mosques around the world that spread extreme ideology. The report also noted that some rich Saudis gave money to charities with terrorist links.

To be sure, what the report does provide is much circumstantial evidence that the Saudis were most certainly involved in 9/11, sufficient to convince any rational man, but perhaps not enough to launch a lawsuit against, say, the King.

The Saudi government itself has repeated called for the pages to be made public so that it can respond to any allegations, which it has long called unfounded.

“We’ve been saying since 2003 that the pages should be released,” said Nail Al-Jubeir, director of communications for the Saudi Embassy, ahead of Friday’s developments. “They will show everyone that there is no there there.”

Moments after the release, Saudi Arabia has already issued its prepared press release:

saudi response[1]

Here are some real-time annotations of the report:

The infamous Prince Bandar is also named:

While we have yet to read the full document, one section caught our eye – the use of Saudi “charitable organizations” to finance terorrism:

saudi chareitable_0[1]

And then this:

al haramain[1]

That names sounded familiar, and then we remembered this WND article:

The lawmakers noted Huma Abedin “has three family members – her late father, mother and her brother – connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations. Her position affords her routine access to the secretary and to policymaking.” Last week, Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner, who admitted he hadn’t read the letters, defended Abedin, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called the accusations “sinister” and “nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American and a loyal public servant.”

* * *

Now it has emerged that Huma [Abedin] served on the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs’s editorial board from 2002 to 2008. Documents obtained by author Walid Shoebat reveal that Naseef served on the board with Huma from at least December 2002 to December 2003.

Naseef’s sudden departure from the board in December 2003 coincides with the time at which various charities led by Naseef’s Muslim World League were declared illegal terrorism fronts worldwide, including by the U.S. and U.N.

The MWL, founded in Mecca in 1962, bills itself as one of the largest Islamic non-governmental organizations. But according to U.S. government documents and testimony from the charity’s own officials, it is heavily financed by the Saudi government.

The MWL has been accused of terrorist ties, as have its various offshoots, including the International Islamic Relief Organization, or IIRO, and Al Haramain, which was declared by the U.S. and U.N. as a terror financing front.

Indeed, the Treasury Department, in a September 2004 press release, alleged Al Haramain had “direct links” with Osama bin Laden. The group is now banned worldwide by United Nations Security Council Committee 1267.

The MWL in 1988 founded the Al Haramain Islamic Foundation, developing chapters in about 50 countries, including for a time in Oregon until it was designated a terrorist organization.

In the early 1990s, evidence began to grow that the foundation was funding Islamist militants in Somalia and Bosnia, and a 1996 CIA report detailed its Bosnian militant ties.

The U.S. Treasury designated Al Haramain’s offices in Kenya and Tanzania as sponsors of terrorism for their role in planning and funding the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in East Africa. The Comoros Islands office was also designated because it “was used as a staging area and exfiltration route for the perpetrators of the 1998 bombings.”

The New York Times reported in 2003 that Al Haramain had provided funds to the Indonesian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah, which was responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. The Indonesia office was later designated a terrorist entity by the Treasury.

In February 2004, the U.S. Treasury Department froze all Al Haramain’s financial assets pending an investigation, leading the Saudi government to disband the charity and fold it into another group, the Saudi National Commission for Relief and Charity Work Abroad.

In September 2004, the U.S. designated Al-Haramain a terrorist organization. In June 2008, the Treasury Department applied the terrorist designation to the entire Al-Haramain organization worldwide

In other words, the US government knew about this terrorist front all the way back in 2001, even as Hillary’s right hand (wo)man was working for an affiliated entity for years later?

We hope to find out more after reading the full document shortly, although sadly we are convinced the important sections will be fully redacted. (For more from the author of “SAUDI GOVERNMENT IMPLICATED: Feds Release the Mysterious “28 Pages” Missing From 9/11 Report” please click HERE)

France Truck Attacker ID’D as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel

News outlets in France have reported the suspected terrorist who shot a gun and drove his truck into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, killing at least 84 and injuring 100 or more, was a local resident with a Tunisian background.

And his name was Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, said the Nice-Matin newspaper. An unnamed senior French government official and an anti-terrorism official also confirmed the terrorist as Bouhlel to other media.

Meanwhile, police sources confirmed to Thompson-Reuters that Bouhlel, 31, was the attacker, saying he was a French national of Tunisian descent who lived in Nice.

Nice-Matin also reported Bouhlel was not on any intelligence watch lists, and that he worked as a delivery driver. His criminal past was confined to arrests for petty theft and minor acts of violence, the newspaper reported . . .

The Daily Mail reported Bouhlel told local authorities he was delivering ice cream, and that’s why he was allowed to drive his truck onto the promenade section of the heavily populated beachfront area. The news outlet also reported Bouhlel had actually been parked on the street nearby the scene of attack for almost nine hours before police questioned him – and had they checked his vehicle, would have found the back “packed full of explosives and ammunition,” the Daily Mail reported. Facebook Helping Germany Crack Down on Anti-Islam Speech

German police conducted a pre-dawn raid on about 60 homes this week rounding up residents accused of posting xenophobic, racist or other “right-wing extremist” content to a private Facebook group in violation of German laws against “hate speech.”

And the crackdown, while being touted by much of the media as targeting “anti-Semitism,” appears largely focused on those who are critical of Islam and the hundreds of thousands of Muslim migrants who have flooded into Germany.

The country’s federal police agency – the Bundeskriminalamt or BKA – said in a press release it was the first nationwide use of police force to combat hate speech on the Internet.

Facebook, along with Twitter and Google/YouTube, have come under fire in some quarters for letting hate speech fester on their platforms in Germany, reported technology journalist Lisa Vaas.

In December the social media giants agreed to help the German government crack down on hateful speech. They pledged to delete certain comments from their services within 24 hours to help fight a rising tide of “online racism” directed at the country’s influx of refugees, Vaas reported. U.S. MARINE-KILLING HEZBOLLAH: All of Our Weapons and Rockets Come From Obama’s Buds in Iran

Hezbollah’s leader said on Friday that the Lebanese terrorist organization will not be harmed by U.S. sanctions since it is funded and armed directly by Iran, Agence France-Presse reported.

“We are open about the fact that Hezbollah’s budget, its income, its expenses, everything it eats and drinks, its weapons and rockets, are from the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, who insisted that the Lebanese terrorist organization “will not be affected” by the recently imposed sanctions.

“As long as Iran has money, we have money… Just as we receive the rockets that we use to threaten Israel, we are receiving our money. No law will prevent us from receiving it,” he added.

Lebanon’s central bank ordered all financial institutions to cease dealings with Hezbollah and come into compliance with U.S. sanctions last month, which led Nasrallah to accuse central bank governor Riad Salameh of “yielding” to American pressure. A bomb exploded outside a Beirut bank earlier this month, only hours after an Iranian news agency issued a threat against institutions enforcing the law.

Dr. Majid Rafizadeh, an expert on the Middle East, pointed out the significance of Nasrallah’s declaration in Al Arabiyah:

It has been long known to political observers that the Islamic Republic played a key role in giving birth to the Lebanese Shiite militant group in 1982. For over three decades, Iran’s financial, military, intelligence, logistical, and advisory assistances to Hezbollah have been well known. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its elite force, the Quds force, transformed Hezbollah to be one of Iran’s most important and powerful regional and international proxies.

Nevertheless, what highlights the significance of Nasrallah’s speech is the fact that this is the first time in which he is announcing and publicly confirming that his group is receiving full monetary and arms support from the Iranian government.

Lebanese MP Saad Hariri criticized Hezbollah following Nasrallah’s acknowledgement, saying, “this admission shows Hezbollah follows Iran par excellence.” Hariri’s father Rafic, the former prime minister of Lebanon, was assassinated in 2004. A United Nations investigation implicated Hezbollah in the killing.

Nasrallah’s admission was made in the course of a speech marking 40 days since the death of Hezbollah commander Mustafa Badreddine. After Badreddine’s death, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif eulogized the explosives expert, who was implicated in the 1983 bombing of U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut that killed 305 people.

Nasrallah’s speech seems to confirm an assurance given to him last August by Zarif that the nuclear deal presented “a historic opportunity” to confront Israel. Iran recently announced that its defense spending would increase by 90% in the coming year.

The comments also call into question assurances made by Secretary of State John Kerry last year that the U.S. would ensure that Iran could not arm Hezbollah, despite the lifting of nuclear sanctions against Tehran. “Our primary embargo is still in place,” Kerry said at a Senate hearing last year. “We are still sanctioning them. And, I might add, for those things that we may want to deal with because of their behavior, for instance, Hezbollah, there is a UN resolution, 1701, the prevents the transfer of any weapons to Hezbollah. That will continue and what we need to do is make sure that we’re enforcing it.” (For more from the author of “U.S. MARINE-KILLING HEZBOLLAH: All of Our Weapons and Rockets Come From Obama’s Buds in Iran” please click HERE)

DEVELOPING STORY: Dozens Killed in France, Over 100 Wounded

By Steve Almasy. A long white truck ran into a crowd of people in Nice, France, on Bastille Day, killing “probably” 30 people and injuring 100 more, a local prefecture official told CNN.

One witness, an American who was about 15 feet from the truck, said the driver pointed his tractor trailer into the crowd, mowing bodies over. The witness said the driver accelerated as he hit those bodies.

There was gunfire, he said. A CNN affiliate in France, BFM-TV, reported police exchanged gunfire with people in the truck. (Read more from “Dozens Killed in France” HERE)

By FoxNews.com. DEVELOPING: A large truck drove into a crowd of people who had gathered for a Bastille Day fireworks show Thursday in the southern French city of Nice, killing at least 30 people and injuring 100 more in an apparent terror attack, officials said.

A police official told France’s BFM TV that the driver of the truck was also dead. A witness, Wassim Bouhlel, told the Associated Press that he saw the truck drive into the crowd, then witnessed the driver emerge with a gun and start shooting.

“There was carnage on the road,” Bouhlel said. “Bodies everywhere” . . .

The Nice-Matin newspaper quoted one of its reporters as saying the truck driver “mounted onto the Prom and he drove on everyone.” The reporter added, “people are running, it’s panic.” (Read more from this story, “Dozens Killed in France,” HERE)

Why Venezuela Putting Its Food Supply Under Military Control Is So Chilling

In the state of nature, force triumphs over all else. If societal progress is measured by movement towards voluntary individualism and away from coercion at the hands of strongmen, then by all accounts Venezuela is regressing into this decivilized state.

That is the takeaway given the news breaking this week that Venezuelan potentate President Nicolás Maduro is putting the country’s military in charge of its food supply.

As the Wall Street Journal details, “Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino…will be in charge of transporting and distributing basic products, controlling prices and stimulating production, according to a decree published Tuesday in the official gazette.”

If you think that Solyndra was an epic government-backed failure, it will look like child’s play compared to the scale of the catastrophe sure to take place now that Venezuela’s government is putting the very sustenance of the nation under the central planning of a military leader.

The symbolic value of such an act cannot be overstated. When the literal lifeblood of a nation is put in the hands of a police force, you know that said nation is on the brink of total collapse, leading to more crippling state control as disorder devolves into all-out chaos. Not even the most doe-eyed Bernie Sanders supporter could think it a wise or comforting decision to put the supply over a nation’s food in the hands of a defense minister. It is as irrational a decision as it is a chilling one.

It can only be called rational from Maduro’s perspective insofar as control over the food supply is a proxy for total control over the people in a struggle to retain power.

Naturally, it represents the exact opposite of what a nation that wishes to avoid starvation, let alone prosper, ought to be doing. It is the Venezuelan government’s widespread economic intervention, its abrogation of contractual and property rights and its debauching of its currency that has ruined any semblance of a functioning marketplace. Putting the food supply under military control is dumping kerosene on the fire.

The surest path out of the socialist death spiral must involve re-empowering the citizens by creating the conditions necessary for buyers and sellers to communicate through a healthy and functioning price mechanism. Citizens must determine the quantity, quality and price at which goods and services are to be produced, consumed and traded. Government does not have the ability nor the moral right to do so.

However jarring the denationalization of Venezuelan industry might be, such pains will pale in comparison to the starvation and bloodshed that the Chavez-Maduro regime’s tyrannical central planning will result in.

Meanwhile, man’s former last best hope on Earth is apparently MIA. As Senator Ted Cruz’s, R-Texas (A, 97%) national security advisor Dr. Victoria Coates noted just yesterday at Conservative Review:

The State Department issued a statement last week that acknowledged Venezuela’s “extremely difficult” past year, but urged “leaders of all branches of the government to engage in the national dialogue required to effectively address your country’s problems.”

In other words, rather than issuing a call for solidarity with the people of Venezuela as they try to regain their dignity, liberty and rights, our Department of State is proposing throwing a life line to a dying socialist regime that is the avowed enemy of the United States.

Unfortunately this statement is not a one-off; it is part of a deliberate policy initiated more than a year ago that is pursuing rapprochement with the Maduro regime rather than developing a plan to support his opposition.

And while we throw the Venezuelan people to the wolves by showing cowardice and complicity in not strongly opposing the Maduro regime, America maddeningly continues to follow in its footsteps. In spite of the self-evident disaster of Venezuelan state economic intervention, and the violent controls that its central planners are putting into place as their plans go haywire, the Democratic Party is now advocating again for the so-called “public option” on healthcare – that is, socialized medicine.

Writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association, in an article dated July 11, President Obama urges Congress to revisit a public plan option “to compete alongside private insurers in areas of the country where competition is limited.” Who knew that government-created competition was the answer to what ails us?

Examples abound around the world of the great man-caused disaster that is socialism. That we continue to attempt such collectivist experiments in spite of the abundant horrifying evidence defines insanity. When will we learn the lesson that freedom works? Report: US Tax Dollars Paid for Anti-Netanyahu Effort in Israel

Obama administration officials “took no action” to stop the Department of State-financed group called OneVoice International when it launched a campaign to topple Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a bipartisan Senate staff report issued Tuesday.

The report is the first official confirmation of Obama administration political meddling in the 2015 Israeli national elections. Republican and Democratic members of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations endorsed the report.

It’s likely to rekindle anger within Israel over the anti-Netanyahu tilt expressed by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her successor, Secretary of State John Kerry.

Neither Clinton nor Kerry attempted to block the award of U.S. tax dollars to the group despite its public intervention in Israeli politics.

“OneVoice’s track record of involvement in Israeli elections did not deter the State Department from making the grants,” the report said. “The subcommittee’s investigation revealed that, during the grant period, OneVoice developed a political strategy designed to defeat the incumbent Israeli government.”

The report also said, “the State Department failed to adequately guard against the risk that resources built with government grants would be deployed for political purposes.”

The subcommittee also found “there were regular meetings between State Department officials and grantee representatives, including some 26 meetings or events recorded by the U.S. embassy that were held between various officials and OneVoice.”

Subcommittee Chairman Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio said “it is completely unacceptable that U.S. taxpayer dollars were used to build a political campaign infrastructure that was deployed against the leader of our closest ally in the Middle East. The State Department ignored warnings signs and funded a politically active group in a politically sensitive environment with inadequate safeguards.”

At one point, some State Department officials expressed discomfort about the group’s anti-Israel messaging, including promotional materials “proclaiming Jerusalem to be the holy capital of Palestine.”

Even so, OneVoice received a grant of $465,000 which included the payment of $40,000 to 270 Strategies, OneVoice’s consulting firm.

270 Strategies is an American political consulting firm founded by Jeremy Bird and Mitch Stewart, two senior campaign staff for Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.

Former Ambassador Marc Ginsberg, who served during President Jimmy Carter’s administration and was the U.S. ambassador to Morocco under President Bill Clinton, was CEO of OneVoice at the time.

Ginsberg received $211,000 in income, according to the 2014 tax filing for the parent organization, called the Peaceworks Foundation

Jewish billionaire Daniel Lubetzky underwrites Peaceworks. The group reported in 2014 net assets of $3.8 million.

In 2016, Lubetzky donated $7,300 to the Democratic National Committee and $2,700 to presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016.

In an email obtained by the subcommittee, Ginsberg “circulated a ‘roadmap strategy” and said 270 Strategies “has become an essential partner” for the group.

OneVoice “resources would be deployed to disrupt the Netanyahu-led coalition by pushing for the ‘defection’ of ‘center/center-left political parties,’” the report said.

The staff stated the “Definition of Success” would be “forcing the [Netanyahu- led] coalition to collapse,” according to a OneVoice memo.

“As described by its CEO, OneVoice’s objective was to use its grassroots- organizing resources to become a decisive influence in the next election,” according to the report.

OneVoice was not coy about its political ambitions in its discussions with federal officials.

“OneVoice was candid with the State Department regarding its past political involvement. … Less than six months before seeking State Department funds, [OneVoice] had operated a grassroots campaign in the 2013 Israeli parliamentary elections to help ‘increase[e] the number of center-left seats in the [Israeli] Knesset’—which it described as one of its ‘Strategic Milestones,’” according to the report.

When the Netanyahu coalition government collapsed, “OneVoice shifted its focus to influencing the electoral outcome by working to defeat incumbent Prime Minister Netanyahu. Planning for this effort began during the period when OneVoice was still a State Department grantee.”

OneVoice did not directly use State Department funds for political activities, “but it did use the campaign infrastructure and resources that it had built, in part, with State Department funds to support a campaign to defeat Prime Minister Netanyahu in the 2015 elections,” the report said.

OneVoice “absorbed” the Israeli anti-Netanyahu group called “Victory 15” or V15. “V15 had no further independent organizational existence,” the report said. “There was no legal entity known as V15 in Israel or the United States. V15 had no separate bank account.” (For more from the author of “Report: US Tax Dollars Paid for Anti-Netanyahu Effort in Israel” please click HERE)

ISIS Turning to Mass Casualty Attacks, Expanding Network Amid Territorial Losses

The Islamic State’s territorial losses in Iraq and Syria have been hailed by the Obama administration as evidence that the terror group is failing, but experts predict that the group will continue to instigate large-scale attacks in the Middle East and westward.

According to a report from IHS Jane’s 360 released on Sunday, the terror group’s so-called “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria shrunk by 12 percent during the first six months of 2016 and is now roughly the same size as Ireland or the state of West Virginia. ISIS will increasingly turn toward mass-casualty attacks, the report suggested, to compensate for territorial losses in Iraq and Syria and demonstrate its influence.

The new assessment came one day before Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced the deployment of 560 more U.S. troops to Iraq, where Iraqi security forces backed by U.S airstrikes retook Fallujah from ISIS control at the end of June after a month-long offensive. Over the weekend, Iraqi forces took control of Al-Qayyarah air base, located about 50 miles south of Mosul.

“With the retaking of Qayyarah West airfield, the Iraqi Security Forces have once again demonstrated a serious will to fight,” Carter said Monday. “I congratulate them on their recent successes and reaffirm that the United States, along with our coalition partners, will continue to do all we can to support Iraq’s effort to serve ISIL a lasting defeat” . . .

ISIS’ recent territorial losses have been accompanied by a series of mass-casualty attacks in various parts of the globe that evidence shows were either inspired or committed by the terror group. These include high-profile assaults in Dhaka, Istanbul, Orlando, and Brussels. (Read more from “ISIS Turning to Mass Casualty Attacks, Expanding Network Amid Territorial Losses” HERE)
