San Francisco’s so Liberal, They Can’t Afford Waiters

The San Francisco Bay Area is a booming locale, and certainly one of the most naturally beautiful. It should be a fantastically desirable place to live.

Yet, according to a recent poll, nearly half of San Francisco residents say they want to leave the Bay Area entirely.

A study from the Bay Area Council, a public policy organization, found that 46 percent of San Francisco residents have plans to move out of the area, a jump of 12 percent since 2016. Of those who participated in the survey, 61 percent said they planned to leave the state, with Texas being a primary destination.

There are certainly many reasons for leaving the Bay Area. Rising crime rates and lawlessness, as well as worsening sanitation, are among them.

San Francisco’s homelessness problem is becoming, at this point, a national embarrassment.

But the top reason for wanting to leave San Francisco, according to the poll, is the cost of housing. As jobs have flowed into the Bay Area, the cost of living has become astronomical.

“Despite the fact that many of the homes and apartments are small and located close together, San Francisco now has the highest rent in the world,” wrote Rachel Alexander in Townhall. “The average monthly rent is $3,500. A median-priced home sells for $1.5 million, but only a paltry 12 percent of residents can afford this.”

The explosive housing costs can’t just be excused as simply the product of a growing economy and urban environment. Other thriving cities such as Nashville and Atlanta are also doing well without the surge in housing costs.

Some have argued that high housing costs are simply due to the natural geographic constraints of older cities.

However, as urban expert Scott Beyer wrote in Forbes, it’s a faulty argument.

“There is much raw, developable land north and south of the city, as well as east of San Francisco and the East Bay cities of Oakland and Berkeley. According to a San Jose Mercury News report, 75 percent of the Bay Area is open space,” Beyer wrote.

“Given these facts, to complain about the region’s geographical constraints is frankly ludicrous,” Beyer wrote. “San Francisco is little different than Atlanta, Houston, or Dallas in the amount of housing development it could theoretically handle.”

So why is housing in San Francisco particularly out of control? Politics.

There is actually plenty of space to grow in the Bay Area, but for over a generation San Francisco specifically has pursued “no growth” policies, deeply restricting the building that can take place in the city.

Strict zoning laws, regulations, and prohibitions on growth prevent residents from filling available space.

This parallels a philosophy that took hold around the state, where no-growth policies combined with draconian environmental restrictions — such as theCalifornia Environmental Quality Act passed in the 1970s — made new building impossible or prohibitively expensive.

The state has tried to counteract this problem by funding more low-income housing, but government meddling is now simply working against other government meddling that created the housing problem to begin with.

The more the plans fail, the more the planners plan, as Ronald Reagan once said.

When the economy boomed over the last decade in the wake of the tech surge, the pressure on the housing market became extreme — especially in San Francisco.

A CityLab article from 2015 explained:

When San Francisco should have been building at least 5,000 new housing units a year to deal with the growing demand to live here, it instead averaged only about 1,500 a year over the course of several decades. In a world where we have the ability to control the supply of housing locally, but people still have the freedom to move where they want, all of this has played out in predictable ways.

Ironically, a city deeply committed to progressive values has become a place where only the super-rich can thrive.

A report from Paragon Real Estate earlier this year showed that the “household income now required to buy a median-priced home in San Francisco reached an all-time high of $303,000 in December.”

These prices are a stretch even for those working in the tech industry; they are becoming impossible to overcome for nearly everyone else.

The situation has become so extreme that San Francisco restaurants are finding creative ways to serve guests without waiters. Waiters can’t afford to live in and around the city, and restaurant owners can’t afford to pay their waiters’ now $15-an-hour minimum wage.

San Francisco is a microcosm of California’s larger problems.

While the state is riding high due to a surging national economy and enormous growth in the tech industry, this success masks fundamental problems below the surface that are doing damage to the Golden State.

Remarkably, California has the highest poverty rate of any state and the lowest rating for “quality of life.”

San Francisco and the state of California have touted their welcoming attitude, embracing sanctuary city policies to shield immigrants who have entered the country illegally.

Increasingly, though, these newcomers, like everyone else, will find it nearly impossible to reach the middle-class lifestyle that California became famous for in the 20th century.

That’s why, even amid economic growth, people want to get out, when it used to be a place where Americans all over the country flocked — the American dream within the American dream.

San Francisco is in no danger of collapse anytime soon, but it’s important to remember that a half-century ago, Detroit was one of the great cities of the world and the heart of the American economy.

Now Detroit is a sad tale of decline and dysfunction.

San Francisco’s natural beauty and appealing climate will likely prevent such a steep fall. The fact that people are desperate to leave at the first opportunity, though, is certainly a canary in the gold mine.

Federal Judge Orders State to Pay for Gender Reassignment Surgery for Medicaid Recipients

Wisconsin must pay the gender reassignment surgery for two transgender Medicaid recipients, a federal judge in Madison has ruled. . .

Cody Flack of Green Bay and Sara Ann Makenzie of Baraboo filed a lawsuit in April that claimed that Wisconsin’s denial of coverage for transgender surgeries violated the Affordable Care Act and their “equal protection rights,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. . .

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge William Conley granted a preliminary injunction to bar enforcement of the rule. Conley also suggested the injunction be expanded to include “any transgender Medicaid patient whose doctor recommends the surgery,” according to the report.

“The likelihood of ongoing, irreparable harm facing these two individual plaintiffs outweighs any marginal impacts on the defendants’ stated concerns regarding public health or limiting costs,” Conley wrote in a 39-page order. . .

According to the report, Flack has “cerebral palsy, uses a motorized wheelchair and “relies on Supplemental Security Income for the disabled as his sole support,” the report said. He reportedly first identified as a boy at age 5. (Read more from “Federal Judge Orders State to Pay for Gender Reassignment Surgery for Medicaid Recipients” HERE)

Global Warming Study Claims Thousands Will Commit Suicide Over the Weather

A July study claims that thousands more people will commit suicide in the coming decades due to man-made global warming.

Published in the journal Nature Climate Change on Monday, the study found a one-degree increase in average monthly temperature correlated with suicide rate increases of 0.68 percent and 2.1 percent in the U.S. and Mexico, respectively.

The effect they found is extremely small, and in some cases, not statistically significant from zero. Still, the results were touted in media reports as evidence that increased temperatures exacerbate suicides.

The study predicts between 9,000 and 40,000 more people will off themselves by 2050 because of man-made warming — based on an extreme warming scenario that experts increasingly call “exceptionally unlikely.”

“So we take a specific location and we take a specific month, and we compare cooler versions of that month to hotter versions of that month, and we ask, ‘Are suicide rates different during those two months?’ We indeed find that they are,” lead author Marshall Burke told CNN. Gun-Wielding Punks Caught on Video Robbing Vietnam Vet, Cancer Survivor

By Daily Wire. A Vietnam veteran and cancer survivor was sitting on his porch at his Detroit home when two men robbed him at gunpoint on Friday afternoon.

“The guy kept saying ‘I will shoot you.’ I said ‘You [don’t have] to shoot me, take what you’ve want,'” Kendrick Holloway, 68, told Fox 2.

The suspects did not shoot Holloway; they did, however, steal jewelry right off his body that the veteran described as having sentimental value.

Holloway explained that his pupils were still dilated from an earlier doctor’s appointment, so his vision was blurred during the attack.

“I dropped the keys, I bent over to pick them up and they were right on me,” he said, adding, “It happened so fast, I didn’t even have a chance to think about it. The biggest thing was, ‘don’t shoot, just take the jewelry.’ That’s replaceable, I’m not.”

Gunmen Caught on Doorbell Camera Robbing Detroit Veteran

By Fox 2. . .They did steal sentimental valuable jewelry right off of Kendrick’s body. Then while Kendrick was speaking to FOX 2, Detroit police called a family member to say they had arrested a possible suspect.

“That’s fast action,” Holloway said. “Police is doing their job. They are working it. They are giving a Vietnam veteran some props.

“I love them for it.”

And Kendrick is confident it’s only a matter of time before all the people involved in the crime are arrested.

“I wish them well when they go to prison,” he said. (Read more from “Gunmen Caught on Doorbell Camera Robbing Detroit Veteran” HERE)

Pro-Life Priests Arrested for Prayerful Protest at Late-Term Abortionist’s Clinic in DC

By Townhall. Yesterday morning, two Catholic priests (along with two additional pro-life activists) were arrested for praying inside of a Washington, D.C. abortion facility.

The “Red Rose Rescue”–where pro-life individuals peacefully enter an abortuary, distribute red roses to mothers as a symbol of life, and quietly speak with and pray for them–was intentionally scheduled for the same day as the sentencing hearing of two different pro-life activists, arrested in December 2017 for participating in a rescue at the same clinic.

Those arrested yesterday were named as Father Dave Nix of the Archdiocese of Denver, Father Fidelis Moscinski of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, Will Goodman, and a woman who goes only by the name of “Baby Jane Doe”. Additional pro-life activists stood outside in the rain, praying, as the four were handcuffed by police and taken to jail.

The rescue took place in D.C.’s Capital Women’s Services, where the notorious Dr. Stephen Chase Brigham works as a late-term abortionist.

According to Operation Rescue (a pro-life activist organization and watchdog), Dr. Brigham is considered to be “the worst abortionist in America.” He is so bad, in fact, that the National Abortion Federation (certainly no pillar of virtue itself) allegedly revoked his membership years ago. 2 Catholic Priests, 2 Activists Arrested for Pro-Life Witness Inside Abortion Center

By Life Site News. Two Catholic priests and two pro-life activists were arrested for refusing to leave an abortion facility this morning, where they distributed red roses and begged the mothers inside to choose life.

Father Fidelis Moscinski of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, Father Dave Nix of the Archdiocese of Denver, Will Goodman, and an unidentified woman entered Capital Women’s Services, the abortuary operated by Steven Chase Brigham at 6323 Georgia Ave NW, Suite 210 shortly after 9:00 a.m.

They were inside for roughly two hours, and then, because they refused to cooperate with the police on scene, were carried out one by one. Goodman and Fr. Nix eventually stood up to get inside police cars; Fr. Fidelis and the unnamed woman, who goes by “Baby Jane Doe” in solidarity with aborted children, were both limp as officers loaded them into police vehicles. “Baby Jane Doe,” who participated in a May 26 Red Rose Rescue at the same facility, will not give her name to the police. After her last arrest, the charges against her were dropped and she was released from police custody without ever revealing her name. Here’s the Jail Time Food Service Employees Could Face for Giving out Straws

On Tuesday, the Santa Barbara City Council unanimously passed a bill that bans employees of bars, restaurants and any food service business from giving plastic straws to their customers.

“Plastic stirrers and utensils could still be legally provided, but only if customers request them,” reported Reason. In September of 2017, Seattle became the first major metropolis to pass this kind of legislation. The Seattle straw ban was implemented earlier this month.

Under the Seattle ban, if a customer asks for a straw, the straw must be both compostable and biodegradable. Violators of the Seattle ban will be fined $250.

Reason.com describes the Santa Barbara ban as “likely the most severe straw ban in the country.” Violators of the Santa Barbara ban will face up to six months of jail time or $1000 fine. “Santa Barbara has banned not only plastic straws, but also compostable straws,” reports National Review Online (NRO). Furthermore, each illegal straw is an individual fraction. So for example, if a waitress gives out to two illegal straws, she could face up to a year or jail time or a $2000 fine.

Furthermore, the impact that this legislation will have on the environment is minimal. “Straws on average weigh so little—about one sixty-seventh of an ounce or .42 grams—that all those billions of straws add up to only about 2,000 tons of the nearly 9 million tons of plastic waste that yearly hits the waters,” reports AP. Man Claims This Planet Fitness Rule Encouraged Him to Work out Naked

By The Chicago Tribune. A man who stripped naked before working out at a New Hampshire gym told police officers that he thought he was in a “Judgement Free Zone,” before being arrested.

NECN reports 34-year-old Eric Stagno, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, was charged with indecent exposure, lewdness and disorderly conduct on Sunday for taking off his clothes and exercising at a Plaistow Planet Fitness.

Police say he walked back and forth and started doing poses on a yoga mat. He allegedly referenced Planet Fitness’ slogan that it is a “Judgement Free Zone.” (Read more from “Man Claims This Planet Fitness Rule Encouraged Him to Work out Naked” HERE)

Man Who Stripped Nude at a Planet Fitness Thought It Was ‘Judgement Free Zone,’ Police Say

By USA Today. . ,Eric M. Stagno, 34, of Haverhill, Mass., was charged with indecent exposure, lewdness and disorderly conduct after police responded to the gym in nearby Plaistow, N.H., according to local media reports.

“The story we got from witnesses was that the guy walked in, stripped down right there in front, left the clothes and belongings at the front desk, walked back and forth across the gym a couple of times and then settled in over at the yoga mats,” Plaistow police Capt. Brett Morgan told the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper. . .

The gym was fairly crowded at the time, Morgan told The Boston Globe, adding that Stagno checked himself out in the mirror before heading to the yoga mats.

“Some of the comments some witnesses gave were that they felt uncomfortable, disgusted, sick, and unsafe,” Morgan told the paper. “There were more witnesses coming forward than we could take names.” (Read more from “Man Who Stripped Nude at a Planet Fitness Thought It Was ‘Judgement Free Zone,’ Police Say” HERE)

Teens Arrested After Car Chase Leaves Officer Dead

Three teenage suspects are now in custody in connection with a police chase that led to a suburban Seattle officer being struck and killed by a pursuing officer in a patrol car.

Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla said at a news conference Monday that a passenger in the suspect vehicle was arrested with the help of a police dog after the incident early Sunday that killed Officer Diego Moreno.

Two other suspects, including the 16-year-old driver, have since been arrested, he said.

The chase began around 2 a.m. Sunday after a red truck was seen leaving a restaurant parking lot where gunshots were fired, according to Padilla.

Moreno had deployed spike strips at an intersection Sunday to slow the suspect vehicle, police said. He was on foot when he was struck by the patrol car that had been pursuing the suspects.

Authorities haven’t said what specifically led to that collision. Washington State Patrol District Commander Ron Mead on Sunday blamed the suspect for Moreno’s death.

The fleeing suspect’s truck landed on a spike but continued on for another mile before striking a barrier and coming to rest on its hood.

The patrol car also ran into an SUV that spun into two other vehicles. Padilla said three bystanders were provided medical care and that they were all doing OK.

The officer driving the patrol car was hospitalized in critical condition but had improved by Sunday night. He remained in a Seattle hospital Monday with serious injuries, Padilla said.

That officer has been with the department for 18 years and is one of their best, Padilla said. Police said they would release his name at a later time.

Padilla said Moreno made significant contributions during his eight years on the force, and described him as an “incredible human being.”

The Venezuela native was honored last year by the city with a Lifesaving Medal for saving someone from an opioid overdose. In 2016, he was praised for rescuing an elderly woman from a fire.

Kent Mayor Dana Ralph said Moreno’s efforts went above and beyond in the department’s Shop with a Cop holiday event. Ralph said last year Moreno pulled out his own wallet to cover extra costs for the things a child wanted.

“That was the type of person he was, the public servant he was,” Ralph said. “He leaves a huge hole in our hearts.”

Moreno is survived by a wife and two young children.

Community members added Monday to a memorial of flowers, candles, drawings and other items outside the Kent Police Station.

A vigil will take place Wednesday evening at Kent Town Square. (For more from the author of “Teens Arrested After Car Chase Leaves Officer Dead” please click HERE)

Whoopi Goldberg Spit on Judge Jeanine, Screamed Curse Words at Her; Whoopi is Now Finished

By Daily Wire. An on-air fight that broke out between ABC’s “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg and Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro did not end on stage as Pirro claims that Goldberg spit on her off stage and screamed at her to “get the f**k out of this building.” . . .

“I’m still reeling from it to be honest with you,” Pirro told Hannity. “I went on thinking that we would have a discussion about the book. The truth is, that it was an attack on Donald Trump, and then on me. I sat there as Whoopi Goldberg pontificated about how horrible Donald Trump was and at one point I said ‘you know I’m here to talk about the book’ and then she went ballistic – ended the segment.”

“She said ‘that’s it I’m done’ and what people didn’t see who were watching the show, was she yanked away from the desk where we were all sitting and she decided that she was going to end it,” Pirro recalled. “No one saw that, but it got worse.” . . .

“When I went off the stage, Sean, I’m walking downstairs and I said something like, Whoopi I fought for victims my whole life and she came at me as I was leaving and she said ‘F you’ in my face – literally spitting at me, ‘F you, get the F out of this building,’” Pirro said. “And I said to her, ‘did you just say that?’ She said that’s what I said, ‘get the F out of this building’ and she was screaming at me and I’m walking out of the building like a dog who was just kicked off.”

Whoopi Is Finished: Judge Jeanine Puts Goldberg in Her Place

July 26, 2018/by Conservative Tribune

In a week where serious events took up most of the news, we had the Whoopi Goldberg/Judge Jeanine feud to add a bit of bizarre levity to the whole thing.

Pirro, as you may have heard, was invited on ABC’s “The View” only to be summarily told “goodbye” by co-host Goldberg when Pirro brought up violence committed by illegal immigrants. Because clearly, when someone gives you the phlegmatic attempt at summary dismissal that appending “goodbye” to the end of an argument entails, they’ve obviously won. If there’s anything that my years of scrutinizing public discourse has taught me, it’s that. . .

Pirro had the last laugh on her Fox News show Saturday, giving some gratitude to Goldberg for the free advertisement.

“I do want to thank Whoopi and the ladies for helping to make my book No. 1 on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. So go out and get a copy if you haven’t already,” a smiling Pirro said during her show, according to the Daily Wire.

“All of you saw it, and most of you probably heard both my and Whoopi’s version of what you didn’t see after I was thrown off the set. But I’m not here to rehash old news, and in the spirit of tonight’s opening statement, I’d like to close the book on this and move on,” she said. “And I’d like you to do so, as well.” (Read more from “Whoopi Is Finished: Judge Jeanine Puts Goldberg in Her Place” HERE)
