Outgoing Army Chief Ray Odierno: U.S. In ‘Stalemate’ With ISIS

Barack Obama, Ray OdiernoBy Morgan Chalfant. Days before his retirement, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno is emphasizing the need for the United States to continue its campaign against the Islamic State in the Middle East, describing the current U.S. position against the terrorist organization as a “stalemate.”

AFP reported that Odierno said Wednesday that though the Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIL or ISIS) “has been blunted somewhat” in Iraq by U.S. airstrikes coupled with Kurdish and Iraqi ground forces, the military must make defeating the terrorist group its top priority.

“I think right now we are kind of at a stalemate and continue to make some progress,” explained Odierno, who spent more time in Iraq than any other U.S. Army general. He also stressed the need for the U.S. to continue to rebuild the Iraqi forces.

He echoed comments made by the veteran general nominated to lead the Marine Corps earlier this month. While undergoing questioning from Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R., Ariz.), Lt. Gen. Robert Neller likewise characterized the U.S. campaign against IS in Iraq and Syria as a “stalemate.”

However, Obama administration officials–including the president himself–have touted the “progress” the United States has witnessed against IS. (Read more from “Outgoing Army Chief Ray Odierno: U.S. In ‘Stalemate’ With ISIS” HERE)

Croatian Hostage Reportedly Beheaded in Egypt

By Brian Rohan. A Croatian hostage abducted in Egypt by Islamic State militants has been beheaded, according to a gruesome image circulated Wednesday, a killing that, if confirmed, would be the first of its kind involving a foreign captive in the country.

The killing of the 30-year-old oil and gas sector surveyor would deal a blow to President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi’s attempts to burnish the country’s reputation a week after he unveiled a new extension of the Suez canal in a much hyped ceremony attended by international dignitaries.

It will also probably rattle companies with expatriate workers in Egypt and cast a cloud over hopes of boosting international investment and tourism following years of unrest in the aftermath of Egypt’s Arab Spring uprising.

The still photo, circulated by Islamic State supporters on social media, appeared to show the body of Tomislav Salopek, a married father of two, wearing a beige jumpsuit like the one he had worn in a previous video. A black flag used by the Islamic State group and a knife were planted in the sand next to his body.

A caption in Arabic said Salopek was killed for his country’s participation in the war against the Islamic State, and said the deadline had passed for Egypt to meet the group’s demands to free jailed Islamist women. (Read more from this story HERE)

Al Gore Said to Be Looking at Another Run for President

MW-CU841_algore_20140924122959_ZHBy Shawn Langlois. It’ll take more than three emoji to describe how Hillary Clinton must be feeling right now. That’s because a familiar face may have just popped up on her path to the Democratic nomination.

Yes, Al Gore is reportedly talking about a possible run for president in 2016.

Gore, of course, won the popular vote 15 years ago but veered off in different directions, environmental and otherwise, after conceding the White House to George W. Bush.

Having racked up an Oscar and a Nobel peace prize in 2007, Gore has been notably absent from the public eye in recent years. But that could change in a hurry. According to BuzzFeed, a senior Democrat said, “They’re getting the old gang together.” That team is said to be working on “figuring out if there’s a path financially and politically.” (Read more from “Al Gore Said to Be Looking at Another Run for President” HERE)

Al Gore Insiders “Figuring out If There’s a Path” for Him to Run

By Andrew Kaczynski. Supporters of Al Gore have begun a round of conversations among themselves and with the former vice president about his running for president in 2016, the latest sign that top Democrats have serious doubts that Hillary Clinton is a sure thing.

Gore, 67, won the popular vote in the 2000 election and has been mentioned as a possible candidate in every contested Democratic primary since then. He instead spent much of the 2000s focused on environmental campaigning and business ventures. He has largely slipped out of public view in more recent years.

But in recent days, “they’re getting the old gang together,” a senior Democrat told BuzzFeed News.

“They’re figuring out if there’s a path financially and politically,” the Democrat said. “It feels more real than it has in the past months.”

The senior Democrat and other sources cautioned not to overstate Gore’s interest. He has not made any formal or informal moves toward running, or even met with his political advisers about a potential run. (Read more from this story HERE)

Navajo Nation Vows to Sue EPA Over Toxic Mine Spill

downloadBy Amy R. Connolly. The Navajo Nation vowed to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over a toxic wastewater spill into waterways throughout the Southwest and warned tribal residents to avoid signing the EPA’s compensation form because it will effectively sever their legal and financial rights.

Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye ordered the nation’s Department of Justice to take action against the EPA and signed a directive banning the agency from distributing information about the federal compensation regarding the spill from the Gold King mine, north of Silverton, Colo., into the Animas and San Juan rivers and its tributaries throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.

Navajo Nation Attorney General Ethel Branch said the federal form “contains offending language that will waive future claims for individuals that sign the form and preclude our people from seeking full compensation for injuries” suffered as a result of the release of some three million gallons of toxic mine waste on Aug. 5.

“The spill has impacted us religiously, emotionally, financially,” Begaye said, adding it has affected more than 100,000 Navajo residents, cutting off drinking water and water for irrigation and farming.

“Relocated farmers now need to buy hay and haul water; others living along the river are forced to drive up to 200 miles to find bottled water. People with an average salary of $12,000 are expending dollars on things that they wouldn’t have,” Begaye said. (Read more from “Navajo Nation Vows to Sue EPA Over Toxic Mine Spill” HERE)

Facial Recognition Software Moves From Overseas Wars to Local Police

13FACIALRECOGNITIONWEB1SUB-articleLargeFacial recognition software, which American military and intelligence agencies used for years in Iraq and Afghanistan to identify potential terrorists, is being eagerly adopted by dozens of police departments around the country to pursue drug dealers, prostitutes and other conventional criminal suspects. But because it is being used with few guidelines and with little oversight or public disclosure, it is raising questions of privacy and concerns about potential misuse.

Law enforcement officers say the technology is much faster than fingerprinting at identifying suspects, although it is unclear how much it is helping the police make arrests.

When Aaron Harvey was stopped by the police here in 2013 while driving near his grandmother’s house, an officer not only searched his car, he said, but also took his photograph and ran it through the software to try to confirm his identity and determine whether he had a criminal record.

Eric Hanson, a retired firefighter, had a similar experience last summer. Stopped by the police after a dispute with a man he said was a prowler, he was ordered to sit on a curb, he said, while officers took his photo with an iPad and ran it through the same facial recognition software. The officers also used a cotton swab to collect a DNA sample from the inside of his cheek.

Neither man was arrested. Neither had consented to being photographed. Both said officers had told them that they were using facial recognition technology. (Read more from “Facial Recognition Software Moves From Overseas Wars to Local Police” HERE)

This Health Care Site Did Not Verify Social Security Numbers, Citizenship Status

healthcare-dot-govHealthcare.gov’s internal controls did not effectively determine eligibility for coverage because Social Security numbers and citizenship status were not always verified properly, according to a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) audit.

The Inspector General (IG) investigated HHS to determine whether the Federal marketplace’s internal controls determined correctly whether individuals were eligible for qualified health plans.

The IG found that the internal controls did not always correctly verify Social Security numbers, citizenship status, annual household income, and family size information to determine eligibility.

One applicant understated her income by $7,000. According to the IG, the marketplace should have compared this income data to available electronic data sources and realized that the applicant’s income was more than 10 percent below the income listed on these data sources. Then, the marketplace should have asked the applicant for additional evidence of income . . .

Another example of weak internal controls was found in efforts to verify citizenship status. The marketplace did not always verify this information through the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security, as was required. Sessions, Cruz Demand Immigration History of Homegrown Terrorists

ted_cruz2At Conservative Review, we’ve focused a lot this year on the nexus between politically correct immigration policies and risks to our national security. That, in fact, clamping down on immigration from volatile parts of the world is more important, prudent, and constitutional than engaging in nation building oversees or expanding the surveillance state.

With the FBI warning that the homegrown terror problem is growing out of control, especially among the ranks of families who emigrated from the Middle East, two conservative senators want answers on the danger of our immigration policies and the role it has played in homegrown terror. Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) have sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, and Secretary of State John Kerry demanding answers regarding the immigration status of the growing list of individuals caught planning terror attacks, executing terror attacks, or flying abroad to fight for Islamic terror groups. In the letter, they state, in part:

Based on publicly available information, we have identified at least 72 individuals in the United States who, over the last year: have engaged in or attempted to engage in acts of terrorism; conspired or attempted to conspire to provide material support to a terrorist organization; engaged in criminal conduct inspired by terrorist ideology; or who have been sentenced for any of the foregoing. We would like to understand more about these individuals, and others similarly situated in recent history, and the nexus between terrorism and our immigration system.

Sessions and Cruz are exactly right. Five American servicemen were murdered on American soil by an Islamic terrorist whose family immigrated here from Kuwait. There are so many unanswered questions about his immigration history and neither the political class nor the media seem interested in asking the relevant questions.

Instead of relying on the administration to supply half-baked information, the senators cleverly created a chart with specific permutations of immigration questions for the 72 cases and are requesting that the relevant departments coordinate to fill them out. In addition, they have requested a list of all immigrants who have engaged in terror activities since 1993. That was the year two CIA agents were shot and killed outside of the Langley headquarters and the World Trade Center was bombed by Muslim immigrants from the Middle East. The Heritage Foundation counts 69 known terror plots since 9/11, most of which were committed by Muslim immigrants to the U.S. or those from families that emigrated from the Middle East.

The senators want to know why more isn’t being done to deter the growing trend of individuals living here who attempt to join terror groups. Cruz’s office pointed to the bill he introduced earlier this year, which would strip citizenship and passports from those who join terrorist organizations. “The Senator plans to continue to push for the Judiciary Committee to take up the Expatriate Terrorist Act. This letter is part of the effort to make the case that ETA is needed as a tool to prevent acts of terror by naturalized citizens.”

What is so offensive about this growing phenomenon is that it is so avoidable. Our government can’t stop all domestic crime nor can they solve the world’s problems, but it is their responsibility and within their power to prevent security risks from coming here to begin with. However, there is so little data collected on the immigration history of domestic terrorists because it flies in the face of the left-wing agenda. And that is the goal of this letter, according to Cruz’s office. “The Senator has grave concerns about how well the government is vetting foreign nationals whom it allows into the country and whom, in some cases, it allows to become US citizens,” said a Cruz aid. “The letter is part of an effort to gain a better understanding of the problem so that we can address it.”

It was disappointing to watch the incoherence of the presidential candidates on this issue during both debates last Thursday. When the question of homegrown Islamic terror was posed to the candidates, they spoke at length about fighting overseas (with too much focus solely on ISIS) and debated the NSA surveillance program, but none of them brought up the 800-pound gorilla in the room – suicidal immigration policies. Have none of them read the bipartisan 9/11 Commission Report?

America represents 4% of the world’s population, yet it already has 20% of the world’s migrants. Gallup finds that 138 million people worldwide would like to immigrate to the U.S. There is no lack of supply for new immigrants; we can choose the best and brightest. So why are our politicians continuing the failed policies that bring in security risks, violent criminals, and even fiscal liabilities? Immigration is an elective policy and should be used to benefit the country, not dismantle it. It’s about time our representatives get to the bottom of our insecure immigration system. The Sessions/Cruz effort is a good start. (Re-posted with permission from the author, “Sessions, Cruz Demand Immigration History of Homegrown Terrorists”, originally appeared HERE)

Here’s a Look Inside of Obama’s $22.5M Vacation Mansion

Barack ObamaPresident Obama and his family are currently residing in a $22.5 million vacation home complete with six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and two half-bathrooms on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

The Huffington Post reported that the nearly 7000-square-foot Chilmark mansion, positioned on nine-and-a-half-acres, houses a sunken living room with double-height windowed walls that allow the first family a view of the heated infinity pool . . .

Despite the estate’s amenities, Obama has been spending plenty of time on the golf course. On Wednesday, the president played a game of golf with NBA stars Alonzo Mourning and Ray Allen.

The group played through the course at the Farm Neck Golf Club in Martha’s Vineyard. Days earlier, Obama was spotted on the same course playing a round with comedian Larry David and others.

President Obama and his family departed the White House for the Massachusetts getaway on August 7, a day earlier than their scheduled departure date. Their 17-day vacation is more than four times the length of the average American vacation. (Read more from “Here’s a Look Inside of Obama’s $22.5M Vacation Mansion” HERE)

Top Army Leader: Here Is America’s Most Dangerous Threat

burning-american-flag250By Theodore Schleifer and Jim Sciutto. The outgoing Army chief of staff said Wednesday that Russia posed the “most dangerous” threat facing the United States today, thanks to its “sophisticated” operations in Ukraine.

Gen. Raymond Odierno, who is leaving his post, estimated that only a third of U.S. brigades are capable of operating at the level of the hybrid warfare Russia is undertaking there. And he worries that Russia could next intervene in NATO allies like Latvia or Estonia.

“They are more mature than some other of our potential adversaries, and I think they have some stated intents that concern me in terms of how the Cold War ended,” Odierno said of Russia when asked by CNN. “They have shown some significant capability in Ukraine to do operations that are fairly sophisticated, and so, for me, I think we should pay a lot of attention.” (Read more from “Top Army Leader: Here Is America’s Most Dangerous Threat” HERE)

Russia vs. NATO – It’s War Time

By Polina Tikhonova. Analysts at the European Leadership Network think tank conducted an analysis of large-scale military drills that took place in March by Russia as well as smaller military drills carried out by NATO in June.

The analysts concluded that the “nature and scale” of the drills showed that “Russia is actively preparing for a conflict with NATO. . .

A Russian Lt. Gen expressed his opinion that if Ukrainian forces decide to cross the ceasefire line to try take back eastern Ukraine, it would unleash a [wider] war.

Russian troops have launched some of their heaviest artillery attacks on the Ukrainian forces’ positions in six months.

According to Russia military analyst Pavel Felgenhauer. back in February 2013 the chief of the General Staff of Russia, Valeriy Gerasimov, warned that a ‘great war’ was coming. (Read more from this story HERE)

A Dad Wanted to Open Carry at His Daughter’s School but Was Denied – Then a Judge Stepped In

According to recent reports, a Michigan father has come out on top following a legal battle he said began when he was denied access to his daughter’s elementary school.

Kenneth Herman took his local school district to court after repeated efforts to enter the school while openly carrying his handgun in compliance with local law. The issue, he was told, centered around the school’s designation as a gun-free zone.

“I think schools being gun-free zones is not a wise idea,” he explained to reporters. “I think having law-abiding armed citizens in there provides some measure of protection that isn’t a glass door that can be broken out.”

The district argued that the policy exists to promote the “safety and protection of students,” though its defense did not hold up under Circuit Judge Archie Hayman’s scrutiny.

Citing state law that permits legal concealed carry on public school campuses, Hayman ruled in Herman’s favor.

Michigan Open Carry, which provided legal representation in the case, released a statement applauding the ruling, noting the speed with which it was decided suggested it was “clearly an easy decision” for Hayman. 150 Days: Treasury Says Debt Has Been Frozen at This Number

treasury-ap_photo-2013-carolyn_kasterThe portion of the federal debt that is subject to a legal limit set by Congress closed Monday, August 10, at $18,112,975,000,000, according to the latest Daily Treasury Statement, which was published at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

That, according to the Treasury’s statements, makes 150 straight days the debt subject to the limit has been frozen at $18,112,975,000,000 . . .

On July 30, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew sent a letter to the leaders of Congress informing them that he was extending a “debt issuance suspension period” through October 30.

In practice, that means that unless Congress enacts new legislation to increase the limit on the federal debt before then, the Treasury will continue for at least the next eleven weeks to issue Daily Treasury Statements that show the federal debt subject to the limit beginning and ending each day frozen just below that limit.

The Daily Treasury Statement for March 13 was the first to show the debt subject to the limit closing the day at $18,112,975,000,000. Every Daily Treasury Statement since then has reported the same thing: the debt closing the day at $18,112,975,000,000.
