Two police officers were shot and seriously wounded early Thursday outside the police department in Ferguson, Mo. amid protests that followed the resignation of the town’s police chief.
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar told a news conference just before 2 a.m. local time that a 41-year-old officer from St. Louis County was shot in the shoulder, while a 32-year-old officer from suburban Webster Groves was shot in the face. Both officers were taken to a local hospital. Belmar said both men were conscious, but had no further word about their condition except to describe the injuries as “very serious.”
Belmar said that at least three shots were fired and were believed to come from a house across the street from the police department. He said he did not know who shot the officers.
The shooting was first reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
KTVI reported that as many as 200 protesters had gathered outside the police station to demand more changes in the city’s government after the resignation of Police Chief Tom Jackson Wednesday afternoon. The station reported that at least one person had been arrested and that protesters were blocking traffic on nearby Florissant Road. Something odd happened to the US Navy a few days ago. Somewhere between February and March, the fleet lost nine ships.
The web page where the service lists its vital statistics — number of people, number of ships, etc. — showed a fleet of 284 ships as Feb. 27 came to a close. But on March 2, that same fleet was officially listed as 275 ships.
But no real ships were decommissioned, sold, sunk or otherwise disposed of. So what happened?
. . .The Democratic administration likes to point out the fleet is growing since it dropped below the 300-ship level in August 2003 — under the administration of President George W. Bush — hitting a low of 275 ships in early May 2007. . .
A year ago, the administration altered the way it counts the fleet, adding some ships not previously counted, resulting in a jump from 283 ships to 290. Opponents on the Hill cried foul, arguing the Navy was artificially inflating the fleet’s size, and inserted language into the 2015 Defense Authorization Act to force the service to return to the old rules. The Obama administration is investigating allegations that two senior Secret Service agents, including a top member of the president’s protective detail, drove a government car into White House security barricades after drinking at a late-night party last week, an agency official said Wednesday.
Officers on duty who witnessed the March 4 incident wanted to arrest the agents and conduct sobriety tests, according to a current and a former government official familiar with the incident. But the officers were ordered by a supervisor on duty that night to let the agents go home, said these people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive internal matter.
The episode presents an early test for the Secret Service’s new director, Joseph P. Clancy, who was appointed by Obama last month after a string of security lapses at the White House and other embarrassing missteps and had vowed to restore the agency’s once-stellar reputation.
Clancy on Monday directed that the inquiry be led by the Department of Homeland Security inspector general, in part because the incident involves such senior officials, a law enforcement official said.
Agency spokesman Brian Leary confirmed the investigation after questions from The Washington Post, saying the Secret Service was “aware of the allegations of misconduct involving two of our employees.” He declined to specify which allegations are the focus of the inquiry. Folks, what can I say? The words of South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham are not only chilling, they are tyrannical. Graham, speaking to a group of people gathered in New Hampsire, said that if he were president of the United States, he would not allow Congress to leave Congress until his demands were met and he would use the US military to ensure they could not leave town, a clear usurpation of power by the executive branch.
Keep in mind that this is the same Lindsey Graham I addressed nearly two Saturdays ago about his corruption, has said that alleged “terrorists,” who are American citizens, would not be provided an attorney, something protected under the Constitution, and said that Barack Obama loves America and is a patriot.
In a speech at the Concord City Republican Committee on March 7, 2015, he continued to advance the idea that we need to send more of America’s men on the ground to defeat ISIS, a group that he deemed worth of funding and training when they were in Syria. He also pushed to reverse the cuts to defense spending.
However, it was his statement that he would use the US military to make sure that members of Congress could not leave until his demands were met that has drawn attention.

A veterinary clinic worker at Tulane University might have been exposed to bacteria that can be used for bioterrorism and that a nearby research laboratory failed to contain, a federal official confirmed Wednesday night.
An initial test showed that the worker at the Tulane National Primate Research Center in Louisiana had antibodies to Burkholderia pseudomallei, said Jason McDonald, a spokesman for the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
But the worker is not ill, McDonald said, and the presence of antibodies just means the immune system has built up a defense against the bacteria. Furthermore, the test result may be a false positive, he said, and even if antibodies are confirmed, the worker’s exposure to the bacteria might have occurred long ago and elsewhere.
Nor is there any evidence that the public is in danger. “There’s nothing to indicate to us that the general public is at any significant risk,” McDonald cautioned.

The Republican senators’ statement has become the subject of immense controversy, as it challenged President Obama’s authority to strike a nuclear deal and cautioned Iran’s leaders that any agreement would need congressional approval in order to necessarily last beyond Obama’s term.
Clinton, who is widely expected to enter the presidential race in the coming months, tweeted a warning to those potential Republican candidates who have praised the letter.

Senior Democrats are increasingly worried that Hillary Rodham Clinton is not ready to run for president, fearing that the clumsy and insular handling of the nine-day fracas over her private e-mails was a warning sign about the campaign expected to launch next month.
Few Democrats believe that the revelations about her unorthodox e-mail practices as secretary of state are a substantive issue that would damage Clinton with voters, and many said she performed adequately in a Tuesday news conference defending herself.
But in interviews Wednesday with The Washington Post, current and former Democratic officeholders and operatives from across the country raised serious questions about her and her political team’s strength and readiness for a 2016 presidential campaign.
“She’s tried to put the day of reckoning off, but it’s come now, and I don’t think she can stand another couple of weeks of this without her structure in place,” said Jim Hodges, a former governor of South Carolina.
Some Democrats said Clinton’s initial refusal to provide answers in the growing e-mail controversy smacked of arrogance and a worrisome bunker mentality — and that the controversy was a self-inflicted wound. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and signed by 47 Senators in all, that warns the Iranian regime that any deal it signs with President Barack Obama could be voided by the next president if it is not ratified by the Senate under the U.S. Constitution. They have enlisted Vice President Joe Biden and even retired Sen. Richard Lugar to disparage the effort. In so doing, they have proved Cotton’s point–and checkmated the administration.
Lugar was a moderate, veteran Senator representing Indiana (though, as it turned out, not really living there) when then-candidate Obama held him up as a model of the kind of Republican he would like to work with. Lugar enjoyed wide respect as an authority on nuclear disarmament, and Obama relied on him to push the New START treaty with Russia through the Senate in 2010, over conservative objections that it gutted missile defense and required lopsided nuclear cuts for the U.S . . .
The brilliance of the Cotton letter is that it has forced Obama to admit openly what he had only hinted at indirectly before–that he has no intention of submitting any Iran agreement to Congress for ratification–or even for review. That admission exposes the fact that Obama no longer, in any meaningful sense, represents the United States at the negotiating table. That will only add momentum to efforts to override his promised veto on INARA. A freshman Senator has beaten the president. Here’s the full text of the GOP’s Iran letter, along with a listing of Republicans who signed it:
It has come to our attention while observing your nuclear negotiations with our government that you may not fully understand our constitutional system. Thus, we are writing to bring to your attention two features of our Constitution — the power to make binding international agreements and the different character of federal offices — which you should seriously consider as negotiations progress.
First, under our Constitution, while the president negotiates international agreements, Congress plays the significant role of ratifying them. In the case of a treaty, the Senate must ratify it by a two-thirds vote. A so-called congressional-executive agreement requires a majority vote in both the House and the Senate (which, because of procedural rules, effectively means a three-fifths vote in the Senate). Anything not approved by Congress is a mere executive agreement.
Second, the offices of our Constitution have different characteristics.
For example, the president may serve only two 4-year terms, whereas senators may serve an unlimited number of 6-year terms. As applied today, for instance, President Obama will leave office in January 2017, while most of us will remain in office well beyond then — perhaps decades.
What these two constitutional provisions mean is that we will consider any agreement regarding your nuclear-weapons program that is not approved by the Congress as nothing more than an executive agreement between President Obama and Ayatollah Khamenei. The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time.
We hope this letter enriches your knowledge of our constitutional system and promotes mutual understanding and clarity as nuclear negotiations progress.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Hillary Clinton said the server that housed her emails while she was secretary of state (that was reportedly housed at her home in New York) was set up for President Bill Clinton. She also said that some of the “personal” emails she deleted were between her and her husband.
But just before Hillary began the press conference at the United Nations building, the Wall Street Journal reported that Bill Clinton does not use email.
“The former president, who does regularly use Twitter, has sent a grand total of two emails during his entire life, both as president, says Matt McKenna, his spokesman,” WSJ reported. “After leaving office, Mr. Clinton established his own domain that staff use — @presidentclinton.com. Hillary: ‘Personal’ Emails Deleted, Server ‘Will Remain Private’
By Geoff Earle. Hillary Rodham Clinton revealed Tuesday that she deleted more than 30,000 “personal” e-mails from her tenure as secretary of state — and won’t allow access to the private computer server she used to send them.
“The server will remain private,” she declared — claiming the off-limits e-mails were about “yoga routines, family vacations” and other matters that had nothing to do with government.
Clinton broke her silence on the proliferating e-mail controversy at the United Nations Tuesday, after previously weighing in only with a late-night tweet.
Facing a throng of reporters in an event dubbed an unofficial kickoff for her presidential campaign, Clinton said she regretted her decision to use private e-mails for official business, which she described as all about personal “convenience” and not about secrecy control, as critics charge.
