Social Media Platforms Have No Plans to Lift Bans on Trump’s Accounts Despite Third White House Bid

Facebook officials said Wednesday that the social media platform has no plans to reinstate the account of former President Donald Trump, despite announcing his bid earlier this week for a second term in the White House in 2024.

Officials suspended Trump initially for only 24-hours after rioters hijacked the former president’s rally at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Other social media companies, including Youtube, Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram, owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta, followed suit and suspended Trump’s accounts almost immediately.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, later placed an indefinite ban on Trump’s account on January 7, saying that “the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.”

Ivy Choi, a spokeswoman for YouTube, told The Associated Press the video-sharing platform also has no plans to remove the suspension on Trump’s account.

Heidi Beirich, the founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism and a member of the Real Facebook Oversight Board, told The Associated Press that social media companies would be justified to extend such restrictions or permanently ban Trump on their platforms. White House Accuses GOP of Initiating Probes Into ‘Long-Debunked’ Hunter Biden ‘Conspiracy Theories’

The White House blasted House Republicans on Thursday for vowing to investigate whether President Biden is “compromised” as a result of his son Hunter’s foreign business dealings.

“Instead of working with President Biden to address issues important to the American people, like lower costs, congressional Republicans’ top priority is to go after President Biden with politically motivated attacks chock full of long-debunked conspiracy theories,” Ian Sams, a spokesman for the White House counsel’s office, told The Post.

“President Biden is not going to let these political attacks distract him from focusing on Americans’ priorities, and we hope congressional Republicans will join us in tackling them instead of wasting time and resources on political revenge,” he added.

Sams was responding to two top House Republicans, who said earlier Thursday that they would examine whether the 79-year-old president “is a security risk and whether he is compromised by foreign governments” in connection to his eldest son’s “shady” overseas business deals. Former Democratic Party Official Convicted of Vote Fraud

Former Stamford Democratic party chairman John Mallozzi went before a judge Monday for sentencing in an absentee ballot fraud case stemming from the 2015 local elections.

“I think he’s shown his nobility and what he has done for this community,” said former Stamford Mayor David Martin.
Martin was one of a handful of supporters who spoke fondly of Mallozzi in court Monday.

“One of John’s characteristics in his political involvement in this city is to try to increase the political participation of our first generation immigrants,” said Martin.

Rick Scott Launches Leadership Challenge to McConnell

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., launched a bid for Senate leader on Tuesday, challenging current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for the top spot in the Republican conference.

“I’m writing to you today because I believe it’s time for the Senate Republican Conference to be far more bold and resolute than we have been in the past,” Scott wrote in a letter to colleagues. “If you simply want to stick with the status quo, don’t vote for me.”

Scott’s challenge comes a week after the midterm elections yielded disappointing results for Republicans who had anticipated a wave election that would produce powerful GOP majorities in the House and Senate. On Monday, however, Democrats cemented another two years as the majority in the upper chamber after the Nevada Senate race was called for incumbent Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto. The House was called for Republicans moments before former President Donald Trump took the podium to announce his third consecutive run for the White House on Tuesday.

Scott’s move to rival McConnell also comes after the incumbent leader tasked with reclaiming the Senate undermined GOP chances for a Republican majority. In September, as the fall midterms heated up, McConnell complained about “candidate quality” when discussing Republican nominees. Kamala Harris Hits Her Stride as White House Grooms Her to Replace Biden on 2024 Ticket

Vice President Kamala Harris departed Wednesday for a weeklong trip to the Indo-Pacific region, the latest move by the White House to burnish her image as the logical successor to President Biden if he won’t or can’t run in 2024.

After a rocky start in office that included frequent staff turnover and her struggling in television interviews, Ms. Harris may have found her footing in recent months.

Indeed, Washington politicos see a concerted effort by administration officials to get Ms. Harris out in front, both domestically and on the world stage.

“They are trying to send a message to other potential [2024 Democratic] candidates that they need to cool their heels because Harris is very much in the on-deck circle,” said Patrick Basham, director of the Washington-based Democracy Institute.

Ms. Harris became the administration’s point person on abortion, an issue that helped Democrats avoid a drubbing in last week’s midterms. She crisscrossed the nation stumping for Democrats, rallying the base to fight for abortion access. Abbott Tells Biden He Left Texas Open to Migrant ‘Invasion’

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ripped President Biden Wednesday for the ongoing “invasion” of migrants at the southern border and warned the White House that Texas will escalate its efforts to repel illegal immigrants.

“Your inaction has led to catastrophic consequences,” Abbott, 65, wrote in a letter to the 79-year-old president.

“Under your watch, America is suffering the highest volume of illegal immigration in the history of our country,” added Abbott, accusing Biden of “dereliction of duty.”

The governor charged Biden had refused to enforce US immigration laws and protect the state from invasion, which Abbott wrote had “forced me to invoke Article 1, section 10, Clause 3 of the US Constitution” in order to protect Texas from “invasion by the Mexican drug cartels.”

Border Town Families Are Reportedly Hiring Armed Security Amid Illegal Immigration Surge

Some residents of the border town of Yuma, Arizona, have hired armed security guards as the town has become overwhelmed with illegal immigrants.

Border Patrol’s Yuma sector has seen a 171 percent increase in migrant crossings between 2021 and 2022, according to Fox News. Nearly one million of the four million migrants who crossed the border came through Arizona.

“Two of these families down here actually had to hire private security guards — armed security guards — to keep people out of their yards,” a Yuma county supervisor, Jonathan Lines, told Fox News in an interview. “They were constantly having people come into their homes, into their yards, and they were not very respectful.”

The damage to the crops because of the illegal immigrants impacts the town’s food production, Lines continued.

Ex-Defense Secretary for Trump Says Former President Is ‘Unfit for Office’

Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper thinks former President Donald Trump is “unfit for office” and that the GOP should look elsewhere for a primary candidate.

Esper said of Trump he “wishes he wouldn’t” run for office after the former president announced his 2024 candidacy on Tuesday night in Mar-a-Lago.

“I think he’s unfit for office,” he said in an interview with CNN. “I thought his remarks were very subdued and uninspiring.”

He added that he hopes the Republican Party will turn its attention to a different candidate rather than backing Trump again.

“I think that its time for the Republican Party, and frankly, both parties, to move on to a next generation of leaders, and particularly leaders that can unify our country and get us back to a more normal governance where we treat each other with dignity and respect, and we work on policy issues and not personal attacks,” Esper said. Here’s How Much More Thanksgiving Dinner Will Cost This Year

Americans feeling inflation’s pinch better brace themselves for the cost of hosting Thanksgiving, which surged 20 percent since last year.

According to a newly released Farm Bureau survey, the average cost for a family of 10 this year is $64.05—a $10.74 or 20 percent increase from last year, when the average cost was $53.31.

“General inflation slashing the purchasing power of consumers is a significant factor contributing to the increase in average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner,” said AFBF Chief Economist Roger Cryan. . .

An updated Thanksgiving meal, which considers the addition of ham, russet potatoes, and green beans, brings the total to $81.30 for a family of 10, up from $68.72 last year, or an increase of 18 percent.

Regional differences were also considered in the survey, with Southerners enjoying the most affordable classic Thanksgiving dinner at $58.42, followed by the Northeast at $64.02, the Midwest at $64.26, then the West at $71.37. Republicans Win Control of the House

Republicans gained control of the United State House of Representatives, edging out a narrow victory in the tightly-contested midterm elections.

The GOP currently holds 218 seats after mail-in ballots caused over a week of delays in results, The Associated Press reported, though that number may grow as the last few remaining races wrap up. The elections were far closer than pre-midterm projections, with most pollsters predicting Republicans would take between 225 and 255 seats.

“There was a widespread anticipation that [election night] was going to be a bad night for Democrats. But, you know, the question is like, How bad would it be? It was very likely that the House would flip, and by definition, that’s a bad night by any standard, but it’s a lot less bad for Democrats than I think we thought,” Charlie Cook of the Cook Political Report told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Though final results were below initial predictions, Republicans picked up key seats in Florida, taking 21 of 28 House districts, according to the Associated Press.
