The Right ‘Loves Putin’ and Other Lies the Media Tell About Trump and Russia

What is it about Russia and Vladimir Putin that forces the American national media to lie, make things up, and blurt out statements that have no basis in reality? The latest fiction is that Republicans and conservatives have a newfound affinity for Putin.

If you only watched MSNBC or read The New York Times, you’d be forgiven for holding the impression that all of Fox News and the Republican party have draped themselves in Russian flags and set up GoFundMes for the invasion of Ukraine.

The Times on Sunday ran the headline, “How the American Right Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Russia,” by Emily Tamkin. According to the piece, the “American political right” has in recent years “shifted toward fawning praise for autocrats” and now views authoritarian regimes like Russia’s as “symbols of U.S. conservatism — a mirror for the right-wing worldview.”

That sounds awful! Tamkin’s examples of this “fawning praise for autocrats” include Tucker Carlson telling his audience to ask, “Why do I hate Putin so much?”; former President Trump referring to Putin as “smart” and “savvy”; and GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate J.D. Vance remarking in a recent podcast interview that “We did not serve in the Marine Corps to go and fight Vladimir Putin because he didn’t believe in transgender rights.” (Read more from “The Right ‘Loves Putin’ and Other Lies the Media Tell About Trump and Russia” HERE)

Why Parents Should Assume Government Schools Will Sexually Abuse Their Children Until Proven Otherwise

. . .Coaxing 10-year-old girls away from their parents, promising a fun and safe environment, and then forcing them to sleep in the same room as grown men is the kind of behavior you’d expect from a sexual predator. It’s child endangerment at best and traumatizing abuse at worst. Yet that’s exactly what California’s Los Alamitos Unified School District forced little girls at a school-organized science camp to do for three nights in San Bernardino, according to outraged parents.

“No parent should feel the way I feel after knowing what could have happened to my daughter,” parent Suzy Johnson told local news. “If I was aware of it and I had initialed something saying this was going to be done at this outdoor science camp, I would have kept my children home.”

When confronted about the sleeping arrangements, the camp’s defense was, “Per California law, we place staff in cabins they identify with,” and the two men refer to themselves as “they/them.”

While the science camp incident is enraging, it’s far from the first or only indication that government schools likely harm children more than they benefit them. Before entrusting their kids to a behemoth that has repeatedly subjected children to abuse, parents should demand proof that schools are trustworthy — and assume they aren’t until proven otherwise.

Public schools’ insane obsession with the transgender agenda has physically endangered young girls before. Just look to Loudoun County, where a boy in a skirt raped a young lady in the women’s bathroom and the school board covered it up to keep the incident from sinking their transgender bathroom policy. What else don’t parents know about? (Read more from “Why Parents Should Assume Government Schools Will Sexually Abuse Their Children Until Proven Otherwise” HERE)

Our Mortal Enemy Trudeau

Some people have been astonished by dictator Justin Trudeau’s seizure of emergency powers in order to suppress the heroic truckers who are protesting Covid dictatorship. They shouldn’t be. In order to understand Trudeau, we need to look at his background.

According to a persistent rumor, Justin Trudeau is the “love child” of Cuban tyrant and mass murderer Fidel Castro. The Canadian government took this rumor seriously enough to issue a denial, but the denial itself raises some interesting questions. According to Douglas Perry, writing in The Oregonian, “A persistent internet rumor has led Canada’s government to officially deny that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is the love child of the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. The Associated Press reported the denial Sunday and added that Cuba has never claimed it and Trudeau’s parents never visited Cuba until several years after Justin Trudeau was born.’”

As Perry pointed out, though, “At the time of the social-media post, Justin Trudeau was being heavily criticized for praising Castro in the wake of the communist tyrant’s death. Pierre Trudeau and Castro had had a friendship in the 1970s and ’80s, and Pierre and Margaret visited Cuba in 1976. . . Margaret Trudeau, nearly three decades younger than her husband, made tabloid headlines in the 1970s for dancing nights away at New York discos such as Studio 54 while her husband was busy with affairs of state in Ottawa. She infamously had dalliances with celebrities such as actors Ryan O’Neal and Jack Nicholson.”

One thing is certain. There’s a strange affinity between the Trudeaus, father and son, and the monster Castro. After Fidel made a beeline to Hell in 2016, Justin, already Prime Minister, issued this statement: “It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of Cuba’s longest serving President.

Fidel Castro was a larger than life leader who served his people for almost half a century. A legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and healthcare of his island nation.

While a controversial figure, both Mr. Castro’s supporters and detractors recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for “el Comandante”.

I know my father was very proud to call him a friend and I had the opportunity to meet Fidel when my father passed away. It was also a real honour to meet his three sons and his brother President Raúl Castro during my recent visit to Cuba.

On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and many, many supporters of Mr. Castro. We join the people of Cuba today in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader.”

You can imagine what Justin would have said had he been around for the death of Mao.

After Trudeau became Prime Minister, he showed right away that he wanted to be a dictator. As Paul A. Nuttall points out, “With the possible exception of New Zealand’s PM, Jacinda Ardern, Trudeau must be the wokest leader on the planet. Indeed, I actually think that he revels in his own wokeness and enjoys being provocative.

I often hear wokeness being described as just having good manners and not wanting to offend people, and it might have started out that way. But as with everything, it always gets taken too far and ends up being used for more sinister purposes.

Woke is now being deployed by people like Trudeau to alter language, and in some cases, cancel people who have not signed up to the new ideology. But, in the end, it generally just gets on most people’s nerves.

And there can be no doubt that when it comes to world leaders, Trudeau is the commander-in-chief of woke. There are plenty of examples of his silly wokeness, and I’ll give you two examples that made me laugh.

In 2018, Trudeau told a woman not to refer to ‘mankind,’ but instead to use ‘peoplekind,’ because ‘it’s more inclusive.’ He later claimed it was a joke, but the reality is that he got carried away with his own politically correct waffle. And earlier this year, Trudeau could not even bring himself to wish Canadians a happy Easter – no doubt afraid that any reference to the Christian holiday would offend non-Christians and non-believers. Instead he wished everyone a happy ‘long weekend,’ to widespread derision.” See this.

Trudeau doesn’t do much to conceal his aims. If you talk about freedom, that makes you an enemy, according to an official of a “Centre on Hate” that has government backing. “As demonstrations against COVID-19 restrictions continue across Canada, the word freedom is on the lips and placards of many protesters.

Often associated with protests and rallies in the United States, the term has taken hold among protesters who are part of the Freedom Convoy, which rolled into Ottawa in late January and has become entrenched in the city’s downtown.

For many, freedom is a malleable term — one that’s open to interpretation.

That flexibility, in part, has fuelled its growth among certain groups, said Barbara Perry, director of the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism at the Oshawa-based Ontario Tech University.

‘It is a term that has resonated…. You can define it and understand it and sort of manipulate it in a way that makes sense to you and is useful to you, depending on your perspective,’ she told Cross Country Checkup. It’s also a term that has thrived among far-right groups, said Perry.”

Trudeau has acted ruthlessly against the heroic truckers to seize dictatorial power. “As expected, Canadian PM Trudeau invoked sweeping emergency police powers Monday in his latest attempt to stamp out dissent from citizens protesting vaccine mandates and other COVID restrictions.

“This is not a peaceful protest,” the Canadian leader told reporters in Ottawa alongside top cabinet officials. “The federal government is stepping in because local police authorities have had difficulty enforcing the law,” he said.

“This is about keeping Canadians safe, protecting people’s jobs and restoring confidence in our institutions.”

Enacting the new never-before-used law gives Trudeau, in effect, martial law control over everything and everyone; and not all of Canada is behind him… Premiers of Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, and Saskatchewan oppose Trudeau decision to invoke the Emergencies Act on the truckers.

His first act, it appears, was to choke off any funding for the protesters by broadening its anti-money-laundering rules to cover crowdsourcing sites, threatening them with financing ‘terrorism’.

‘We are broadening the scope of Canada’s anti-money laundering and terrorist financing rules so that they cover Crowd Funding Platforms and the payment service providers they use,’ Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said.

‘This is about following the money. This is about stopping the financing of these illegal blockades.’

Canada authorizes banks and financial institutions to ‘temporarily cease providing financial services where the institution suspects that an account is being used to further the illegal blockades and occupations. . . This new law applies to personal and corporate accounts and covers all forms of transactions including cryptocurrencies:

A bank or other financial service provider will be able to immediately freeze or suspend an account without a court order’”

The “justification” that the tinpot dictator gave for invoking emergency powers was ridiculous: he charged the leader of the truckers’ campaign with “mischief”! “The need for control is a reaction to fear. What does the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fear so much that he invoked the first ever declaration of the Emergency War Measures Act? A group of middle class Canadians who challenged him. That’s it. That’s the sum total of the Trudeau justification.

Need proof? Well, here’s the lead organizer of the Trucker rebellion, Tamara Lich, who triggered the declaration of a national emergency and invocation of the federal Emergency Act. What heinous crime against the state was she charged with? ‘Counseling to Commit the Offense of Mischief’.

Think about it. . . The Canadian Parliament is currently debating whether or not the members within government will support the use of the Emergency Act.

The members of Parliament are spending hours waxing philosophically, with tremendous seriousness, about the need to support the same declaration that is used when Canada would decide to go to war with another country. And they are doing this because blue collar workers have infiltrated the capital city with a demand to remove COVID mandates.

The crimes against the truckers are so serious, they require the invocation of the most massive weapon that can be deployed to remove the constitutional freedoms of Canadian citizens, in an effort to protect them from grave and serious harm stemming from…

…. people charged with “MISCHIEF

And in this fashion, true to his communist roots, dictator Trudeau has responded to a peaceful protest with an unprecedented grasp for power. (For more from the author of “Our Mortal Enemy Trudeau” please click HERE)

What if This Whole ‘Ukraine Invasion’ Was a Hoax?

Let me preface this with the fact that I don’t know what I’m going to speculate about here to be true, but it’s the only thing that makes sense of the entire situation. Of course, if Russia invades Ukraine, either by the time this is published Tuesday or anytime thereafter, this could look pretty stupid. Still, I’m willing to risk it because nothing else makes any sense, when you consider the entire situation.

What if the idea of Russia invading Ukraine is a hoax? What if it’s just Russia doing what Russia loves doing – saber rattling – and nothing else? What if the western governments scrambling now to “prevent war” know this and are hoping the whole situation serve as a distraction from the various “Freedom Convoys” forming around the world to protest oppressive and ineffective government actions related to COVID?

Joe Biden needs a distraction from a lot of things, inflation being chief among them. It makes sense that he’s spewing things in such a panicked way that even the President of Ukraine is confused by it. You’d think the leader of the country “on the verge” of being invaded would be sounding the loudest alarm, but he’s not. The American President is. . .

Honestly, if Russia did attack Ukraine you would care? Would you even notice?

The answer is pretty easy to figure out. Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014. Did you notice then? How has your life been impacted by it? I’d bet not at all. So why would this be different? (Read more from “What if This Whole ‘Ukraine Invasion’ Was a Hoax?” HERE)

Why We Need Secession

The leftists who control Washington, D.C., with brain-dead Biden as their figurehead, want to impose a totalitarian dictatorship on America. The tyranny of Covid vaccines, mask mandates, and lockdowns, and preparations for war in the Ukraine are the latest signs of this, but the leftist plans have long been in the making.

Ordinary Americans don’t want this, and their resistance has generated to so-called split between Red and Blue States. Actually, the leftists control a few big cities through corrupt machine politics and pandering to minority and immigrants mobs, and the rest of the country resists them. The leftists are determined to crush this resistance. As Bill Sardi explains: “Democrats ‘own’ the cities (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Philadelphia, Boston, etc.); Republicans ‘own’ the space (rural land). That is maybe why fires razed through rural areas in California as the Red zones were burnt to the ground. This may have been a covert attempt to force Republicans to move into cities.”

The federal government’s agenda to impose its draconian measures on the Red States goes far beyond this. Mike Adams supplies the details: “With illegitimate occupier-in-chief Joe Biden waging outright war and economic terrorism against red states (see examples below), the leaders of those red states must now nullify federal government overreach in order to prevent their own citizens from being mass murdered by D.C. swamp policies that are intentionally designed to achieve depopulation.

Some of the ways the Biden regime is waging war on red states include:

Economic terrorism: Unleashing OSHA to destroy all businesses that won’t enforce vaccine mandates by levying fines of $70,000 per day or even higher.

Engineered medicine shortages: Biden recently announced restrictions on shipping monoclonal antibodies to red states in order to maximize covid fatalities in those states.

Vaccine mandates: Through vaccine mandates, Biden is committing medical genocide against every American, working to achieve a mass die-off that will leave states in a worsening economic crisis (and humanitarian crisis) as the deaths unfold.

Border invasion: The Biden regime and its corrupt DOJ are actively fighting against sensible border security, openly allowing a land invasion of states like Texas and Arizona in order to flood the nation with replacement Democrat voters.

Money printing madness: Every dollar printed by the Fed and distributed by the Treasury is actually an instrument of debt that steals purchasing power from the hard-working Americans who produce things. Those producers tend to live in red states, while blue states are the welfare states where more people get handouts that were essentially stolen from the producers in the red states.

Election rigging: Biden and other Democrats like Newsom are now institutionalizing never-ending election rigging in order to make sure the will of the people is never honored in any election. Although their own disastrous policies are wildly unpopular they can continue to maintain power by cheating in elections, just like they cheated in 2020.

Outlawing of medicine that works: Notice how the D.C. swamp has attacked ivermectin and made sure no hospital prescribes it to patients? This is also part of the medical genocide agenda, and it’s a war on humanity.
Punitive taxation: Under the Biden regime (which is actually run by Obama), the IRS will be handed a mandate to raise taxes on productive American workers, punishing them for having jobs, all while handing out more welfare and entitlements to the illegals who are allowed to invade America by the hundreds of thousands each month.”

Even if we succeed in rolling back the current totalitarians, this won’t be enough. There is a structural problem in the American government that won’t go away, even if the current mob in Washington is replaced with “good guys.” The government is too big. The American population is around 330,000,000. States like California and Texas are bigger than many countries. How can a nation that vast be governed by a few people? The situation is even worse if we think about the division between the Reds and the Blues that I mentioned before. As Stephen Marche puts it, “Each side accuses the other of hating America, which is only another way of saying both hate what the other means by America…. On both sides, the sense of being under occupation dominates…. Every political faction operates under a siege mentality…. Everyone wants to build a wall of one kind or another. The geographical divide between the competing American Utopias means that, in every election, whoever loses comes to feel like they’ve been dominated by a foreign power.”

Clearly, we have a disunion, not a union, today, and we would do better to recognize this and act accordingly. The problem is nothing new. When the Constitution was up for ratification, the Anti-Federalists pointed to the danger. In the fifth volume of Conceived in Liberty, Murray Rothbard quotes one of the most eloquent of them, Patrick Henry: “Shall we imitate the example of those nations who have gone from a simple to a splendid government? Are those nations more worthy of our imitation? What can make an adequate satisfaction to them for the loss they have suffered in attaining such a government—for the loss of their liberty? If we admit this consolidated government, it will be because we like a great, splendid one. Some way or other we must be a great and mighty empire; we must have an army, and a navy … When the American spirit was in its youth, the language of America was different: liberty, sir, was then the primary object. … But now, sir, the American spirit, assisted by the ropes and chains of consolidation, is about to convert this country into a powerful and mighty empire. … Such a government is incompatible with the genius of republicanism. There will be no checks, no real balances, in this government. What can avail your specious, imaginary balances, your rope-dancing, chain-rattling, ridiculous ideal checks and contrivances? But, sir, we are not feared by foreigners; we do not make nations tremble. Would this constitute happiness or secure liberty.”

The Federalists thought they knew better, and they gave us such nonsense as Madison’s claim that an extended government was a “cure” for faction, not one of its main causes. The tragic result of their efforts was the terrible War Between the States. Let’s not make that mistake again. Let’s try peaceful secession while there is still time. Turns Out the Real Threat to ‘Norms’ Was the Clinton Presidential Campaign

From the perspective of several years ago, it’s the stuff of an implausible political thriller or a conspiratorial YouTube account. One presidential campaign spies on another as part of a broad effort to get government agencies to pick up the baton and launch a high-stakes investigation of the new president that hampers his first years in office and consumes massive public attention.

Where could such a thing happen? Maybe Brazil or Equatorial Guinea? Well, we now know it happened in these United States.

The latest from special counsel John Durham is that a tech executive connected to the Hillary Clinton campaign mined Internet contacts between Russia and the entities connected to Donald Trump in a search for material to try, as Durham put it in a court filing last week, to “establish ‘an inference’ and ‘narrative’ tying then-candidate Trump to Russia.”

Durham’s probe is a righteous effort to get to the bottom of a matter that deranged American politics for two solid years but has been derided or ignored by the mainstream press, with baleful consequences.

Russiagate did more than its share to undermine the norm that losing campaigns should accept the result of free-and-fair elections and to erode confidence in institutions at the highest levels of our government. One way to minimize the harm is to insist on accountability. The people who were most invested in Russiagate for the longest, though, are least interested in revisiting its origins, let alone in apologizing for their own credulousness or malice. The Great Epstein Cover-Up

. . .Barry Krischer was the first prosecutor to let Epstein off for child molestation. The local police presented then-Palm Beach state attorney Krischer with bales of evidence. They had affidavits from dozens of witnesses: girls abused by the pederast, the women who recruited them, the butler who cleaned up sex toys after the “massages,” as well as records of Epstein’s molestation appointments, one delayed because of a victim’s “soccer practice.”

Pretty much everything we know today about Epstein’s sex ring was unearthed by the Palm Beach Police back in 2005 and handed to Krischer on a silver platter.

Five underage girls had given police sworn statements that Epstein had sexually abused them, backed by 17 other witnesses, but when Krischer brought the case to the grand jury, weirdly, he allowed only one of the girls to testify — and then attacked her on the stand! (Epstein’s attorneys had helpfully provided Krischer’s office with the girl’s posts on MySpace, where she talked about boys and drinking, the little harlot.)

According to an extensive review by The Palm Beach Post, most of Krischer’s 2,800-page investigative file on the case consists of dirt against the teens — and against the police — given to him by Epstein’s lawyers. (Thanks, Epstein attorneys! Do we owe you anything?)

The grand jurors, who’d been meticulously kept in the dark by Krischer, ended up voting only for a single charge of “solicitation of prostitution” against Epstein in 2006. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years’ probation. No jail time, no record as a sex offender — no criminal record whatsoever. (Read more from “The Great Epstein Cover-Up” HERE)

No, Those Who Pushed Lockdowns Can’t Hide From the Consequences Now

Americans are starting to feel the increasing collateral damage from our unprecedented, ineffective, and ill-advised Covid lockdowns. It was known before March 2020 that lockdowns would cause lifelong and avoidable damage to billions, yet the world’s ruling classes who claim to have earned their place atop a “meritocracy” strenuously demanded such damage be inflicted especially on children and other vulnerable people.

This ruling class used all their massive financial, communications, and government powers to ensure these tragic outcomes, even though anyone who was an actual expert—or, like me, just someone who reads and has common sense—predicted this false “cure” would hurt worse than the disease.

Now that people are beginning to more deeply feel the foreseeable evil consequences of ruling class responses to a novel virus, that ruling class is pulling what propaganda experts call a “limited hangout.” That’s admitting to bits of the truth in order to re-establish yourself as a credible authority while attempting to keep the whole truth hidden.

So we have outlets such as The Atlantic and The New York Times, which have throughout the Covid era worked as government butt-coverers, now publishing articles admitting that lockdowns and continued rolling blackouts of school instruction is irrevocably damaging Americans, especially children and even more especially the poorest. The kids, as I pointed out in April 2020 and numerous times thereafter, will never as a generation recover.

The Loss of Trust

If there is no trust, we cannot function as a society.

Do you trust your doctor’s mainstream medicine advice anymore?

Do you trust the mainstream educational agenda?

Do you trust the mainstream military leadership?

Do you trust your mainstream religious leaders?

Do you trust your favorite mainstream sports heroes?

Do you trust the mainstream media?

Do you trust mainstream political leadership?

Locally, we might just have more trust with our political leadership. And not just on the municipal or borough level, but even on the state level. Alaska is, after all, a small state in population. We are neighbors, if not friends. If we see our state officials in a parking lot, they know that giving up a little of their time comes with the job. That the eyes are “the windows to the soul” is not just a piece of folklore or a shopworn cliché.

Telling a bald-faced lie in such circumstances usually cannot work. Body posture, facial countenance, sidelong glances are read within our human experience and subliminally communicate to us in a way that is palpable.

Let us ask our officials a final question about trust:

Do you trust the integrity of our elections, both state and nationwide?

Our national and state mainstream politicians have danced around this for over a year. The media tells us to trust them. Michigan, under the control of Marxist/feminist tyrants, has been threatening to disbar any lawyer who enjoins a lawsuit that questions election integrity.

And now we have Washington state, our neighbor to the south, doing worse: threatening to make questioning election integrity a crime! And at the same time a bill is introduced to send unvaccinated citizens into concentration camps.

Without election integrity, we might as well despair of any human remedy to our cultural crisis. Elections are the safety valve of a republic. The concept of “majority rules with minority rights” is utterly lost if they are rigged. If the old-fashioned Chicago-style ballot-stuffing and bribery seemed quaint and even humorous, those days are gone. We are now into full-fledged tyranny.

Worse yet, Lt. Gov. Kevin Meyer, along with the election bureaucracy, basically admitted that election integrity has been compromised, and over a year ago. No, not with the Dominion voting machines or the data-base breach, which is suspicious enough to make us skeptical of their claims. It is through the lack of witness signatures for mail-in ballots, which both Meyer and the division of elections roundly denounced.

And how did this come about? Surprise! Through a court order.

Gov. Dunleavy was told, twice in private meetings backed up by constitutional experts, that he need not obey a court opinion. The discussion was over abortion funding, but the point was made that when one caves in to the false paradigm that “The constitution means whatever the judiciary says it means”, they have forfeited the proper superiority of the executive and legislative branches to the judiciary in all things.

His oath is not to defend judicial opinions, but to defend the state constitution. He might have intercepted this overthrow by the judiciary. Even Meyer might have, for he is empowered to supervise the Division of Elections.

For that matter, every single conservative lawmaker ought to have made a fuss over this, but except for a few conservative lawmakers, they did not. The legislature might easily have provided, with the witness signature statute, that the judiciary was to be removed from review. But they were intimidated by the propaganda of Covid fears and the mainstream media.

Voting machines are absurd. We have seen where local and state election results are going to take weeks to sort out in many cases. Why not use paper ballots, then? People were suspicious of machines, and from both sides of the aisle, long before 2020.

Our Alaska elections have been rigged for a long time, although the official histories totally ignore it. Our statehood vote was compromised by permitting the non-resident military personnel to participate, and were under actual orders to vote for statehood. Walter Hickel’s 1978 primary loss against Jay Hammond was a long, drawn-out melodrama of the worst Chicago-style kind. The vote to finance the capital move from Juneau was literally shot to pieces by a high-powered rifle blasting away at an electrical substation at the hour of highest voter turn-out in the area most likely to favor it by huge majorities. If you think Lisa Murkowski won the write-in vote against Joe Miller, you probably believe that Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump, too.

And the erosion of the “red-tide” of a conservative state house suspiciously melted away after election night. And it led to the train-wreck of Ranked-Choice Voting, which will likely eliminate third-parties and damage the healthy participation of citizen-activism in the larger ones. It will create a mess beyond imagining if it is implemented.

But there is still time: the legislature could demand a statute that only paper ballots be permitted, and remove the judiciary from review. The legislature might post-date a repeal of RCV when the constitutionally mandated two-year restraint expires. The Governor could decide that RCV violates the state constitution on any number of grounds, the judicial opinions — still pending on appeal — be damned.

Our freedom melts away daily in shockingly larger doses. Act and speak up now, for while you might not be interested in dictatorship, dictatorship is very interested in you.

Why the U.S. Military Isn’t Ready for Civil War

The unimaginable has become reality in the United States. Buffoonish mobs desecrating the U.S. Capitol building, tanks parading down the streets of Washington, running battles between protesters and militias, armed rebels attempting to kidnap sitting governors, uncertainty about the peaceful transition of power—if you read about them in another country, you would think a civil war had already begun. The basic truth is the United States might be on the brink of such a war today. Americans must now take the proposition seriously, not just as a political warning but as a probable military scenario—and a potential catastrophe. . .

Only a spark is needed, one major domestic terrorist event that shifts the perception of the country—an anti-government patriot who takes his rage against the federal authority and finds expression in flying a drone loaded with explosives into the Capitol dome or a sheriff who decides to take up arms to defend the doctrine of interposition. It’s even possible, though unlikely, that a left-wing rejection of the police, like the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in Seattle, might force military action. Retired U.S. Army Col. Peter Mansoor, a professor of military history at the Ohio State University, is a veteran of the Iraq War who now studies the insurgencies of the past. He doesn’t have any difficulty picturing a contemporary U.S. equivalent to civil wars elsewhere. “It would not be like the first Civil War, with armies maneuvering on the battlefield,” he said. “I think it would very much be a free-for-all, neighbor on neighbor, based on beliefs and skin colors and religion. And it would be horrific.” . . .

Under the conditions of the Insurrection Act, the Justice Department is the lead federal agency in cases of homeland pacification. In practice, this means the president would appoint a senior civilian representative of the attorney general to oversee military operations. The two-tier authority that results—inherent in the double role of police action and military action—would crush intelligence-gathering efforts. The Reagan administration explicitly decreed in Executive Order 12333 that the military is only allowed, in the case of U.S. citizens, to gather enough information for situational awareness. The nub of the problem is coming up with an effective definition of the phrase “essential to meet operational requirements,” as the Defense Department terms it. Any failure to uphold the constitutional rights of the rebels would justify their claim that the government is illegitimate.

The struggle would take place under conditions of greater scrutiny than any U.S. military operation in history. Information operations are the great weakness of the U.S. military; control over the subtle but all-powerful narratives that give governments legitimacy have always eluded even the most brilliant American soldiers. Four-star Army Gen. John Galvin, back in 1986, described the military mind as “uncomfortable with warfare’s societal dimension.” Every general who has written a new counterinsurgency operating manual—or reported on the reasons for the failures in Afghanistan and Iraq, including retired Army Gens. David Petraeus and Stanley McChrystal—has mentioned the same weakness in understanding the interplay of culture and conflict. Military leaders are, by nature, technicians rather than humanists. They are deliberately not politicians. The Joint Chiefs of Staff’s failure to address the informational nature of conflict in the 21st century is another example of the oldest crisis in warfare. The generals are always preparing for the last war.

During a domestic operation, the military information support officer would be more important than anyone in the intelligence preparation of the battlefield process or any of the engineering officers. Whatever actions are undertaken will be in the context of a highly active and highly polarized media and in the context of a highly polarized legal system with diminishing legitimacy. For half the country, the military engagement against insurrectionists or terrorists will be necessary to preserve democracy and the rule of law. For the other half, it will be the desecration of individual liberty. The beginning of any action, of any sort, by a U.S. military force against U.S. citizens would create an automatic sense of illegitimacy. The already incipient legitimacy crisis would be exacerbated.
