The Earth's Magnetic Field Could Flip Within Our Lifetime

Photo Credit: GizmodoEarth’s magnetic field is constantly shifting, and roughly every 200,000 to 300,000 years it flips north and south completely. We’re currently overdue for a switcheroo—and scientists now say it could happen in a time as short as 100 years, potentially altering life in unexpected ways.

It was long thought that these reversals took as many as 7,000 years to completely switch, according to a 2004 study funded by the National Science Foundation. But over the past few years, other scientists have suggested that the shifts have occurred at speeds previously unimagined. And a brand-new study published in the Geophysical Journal International by a team of scientists from Europe and the U.S. sheds even more light on these speedy changes—suggesting that the last 180-degree flip only took about 100 years.

How did they discern changes in the magnetic field that date back hundreds of thousands of years? By testing layers of ash deposited by volcanic eruptions over the course of 10,000 years, found in a lakebed near Rome. According to a release from Berkeley, the magnetic field directions are “frozen” into these layers of ash, which could be reliably dated to find out when the reversals occurred and how long they took to complete. “We don’t know whether the next reversal will occur as suddenly as this one did, but we also don’t know that it won’t,” said Berkely’s Paul Renne, one of the study’s authors.

WATCH: Jumbo Squid Attack Submarine

Photo Credit: Greenpeace USAIt is like a scene from an old wives’ tale about the giant, tentacled kraken dragging shipping vessels to their doom — two Humboldt squid, flashing an angry red, attack a Dual Deep Worker submersible containing two Greenpeace USA divers on an expedition in the Bering Sea. In a Vine video shot by one of the divers, the two large cephalopods, also commonly referred to as “jumbo squid” or “red devils,” rush at the submersible while spewing vision-obscuring clouds of ink.

The video feeds the perception that the large mollusks – smaller than the elusive giant squid, but still weighing up to 100 pounds and measuring as long as 6.2 feet — are aggressively violent and dangerous to humans. The creatures typically range from 660 to 2,300 feet below the surface of the water, and roam off the coasts of British Columbia all the way down to Chile. In fact, its name is derived from the Humboldt Current off the western coast of South America.

Obama’s Credit Card Denied at Restaurant on New York City Trip

Photo Credit: White House President Obama came perilously close to having to wash some dishes on his recent trip to New York.

Mr. Obama revealed Friday that his credit card was rejected when he went to pay for his meal at a New York restaurant during the U.N. General Assembly gathering last month.

“Turns out I guess I don’t use it enough,” so the payment wouldn’t go through, Mr. Obama explained.

“Apparently they thought there was some fraud going on,” Mr. Obama joked at a meeting Friday with employees of the Consumer Financial Protection Board, adding that “even I am affected” by the difficulties of dealing with the American financial system. The remarks were picked up by the C-SPAN feed of the event.

Beyond Bizarre! CDC Has a Zombie Apocalypse Training Manual

Photo Credit: CDCYou simply cannot make this stuff up. The accompanying photo is the cover page for a CDC publication called “Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic.” No doubt they thought they were being clever and creative, two words that are anathema to government bureaucrats. But yes, the CDC has a training manual using a “Zombie Pandemic” scenario. You know, because things like an Ebola pandemic are just too farfetched. Regardless. The guidance is the same. CDC recommends that:

*People distance themselves from anyone displaying symptoms
*Gather emergency supplies
*Make plans in case you are asked to evacuate
*Print out CDC’s Emergency Preparedness Kit

Wait a minute… something is wrong here. It’s not the same. Some of this actually makes sense. I mean, a preparedness kit, emergency supplies? Basic, but at least you can’t go wrong with it. Unlike what CDC has told us they think is best to “prepare” for Ebola, such as:

*Don’t restrict flights from affected nations
*Don’t restrict travel to affected nations
*Provide minimal, ineffective screening of passengers
*Send the 101st Airborne Division to Liberia to bag bodies
*On second thought, add the National Guard, just for good measure
*Don’t quarantine the Ebola-ravaged population, no, but we may have to quarantine U.S. troops!
*Don’t don heavy protective gear. All you need is some good gloves.
*Don’t restrict travel of exposed healthcare workers, let them travel with elevated temperature.

The thought of squandering the 101st Airborne, about 3,000 other soldiers, plus the Guard, is not merely insane, it is criminally negligent. These troops are not nurses or grave diggers! They have been fighting a battle rigged to lose thanks to Obama’s military “strategy.” And now to add insult to injury, Obama is putting them and the rest of the military, and by extension their families and our entire country at further direct risk of contracting and importing the disease.

Apple, Facebook To Women Employees: Keep Working, We'll Pay To Freeze Your Eggs

Photo Credit: BEN BIRCHALL / PA WIRE VIA AP FILEBy Chanelle Bessette.

Facebook and Apple AAPL have both announced an uncommon program to help their women employees lean all the way in. The tech giants will now cover the cost of egg-freezing treatments for women (and their male partners) who want to delay their family plans in favor of advancing their careers.

Facebook began their program in January of this year, and Apple will begin offering the perk in early 2015. The oocyte cryopreservation procedure currently costs an estimated $10,000, with an average additional cost of $500 per year to maintain frozen egg storage. The companies, NBC News reports, will each offer up to $20,000 for the procedure under their health benefit programs for fertility and surrogacy.

Perk Up: Facebook and Apple Now Pay for Women to Freeze Eggs

By DANIELLE FRIEDMAN.

Two Silicon Valley giants now offer women a game-changing perk: Apple and Facebook will pay for employees to freeze their eggs.

Facebook recently began covering egg freezing, and Apple will start in January, spokespeople for the companies told NBC News. The firms appear to be the first major employers to offer this coverage for non-medical reasons.

“Having a high-powered career and children is still a very hard thing to do,” said Brigitte Adams, an egg-freezing advocate and founder of the patient forum Eggsurance.com. By offering this benefit, companies are investing in women, she said, and supporting them in carving out the lives they want.

When successful, egg freezing allows women to put their fertility on ice, so to speak, until they’re ready to become parents. But the procedure comes at a steep price: Costs typically add up to at least $10,000 for every round, plus $500 or more annually for storage.

If You Bought a Red Bull Since 2002, You Could Get $10

Photo Credit: Byung Jun Park / Creative Commons Red Bull GmbH — the makers of the popular energy drinks — settled two class action lawsuits, agreeing to pay $13 million to United States customers.

In the lawsuits, consumers argued that they were misled by the company’s claims about the benefits of drinking Red Bull, with a focus on statements such as “Red Bull gives you wings…”

“Red Bull denies any wrongdoing or liability and while Red Bull believes that its marketing and labeling have always been entirely truthful and accurate, it confirms that all future claims about the functional benefits of its products will be medically and/or scientifically supported,” according to a legal notice announcing the settlement.

Dog Named 'Lazarus' Survives Euthanasia Attempt

Photo Credit: AP / Jay ReevesAnimal control officer Wanda Snell knows what she saw: A veterinarian inserted a needle into the black-and-brown mutt and injected a chemical meant to euthanize the dog no one had adopted. The animal moved a bit and was still and quiet by the time she left the shelter for home.

What Snell can’t explain is how or why a mixed-breed dog that nobody wanted recovered overnight and has since bounced back fully from what should have been a lethal injection.

Less than a month later, the dog lives with a family in a suburb of the Alabama city of Birmingham, where the animal romps and plays with another rescue dog. His survival seemed all the more surprising since the same dog already been struck by a car before arriving at the Ozark City Animal Shelter.

A rescue worker who retrieved the roughly 4-year-old male dog after the failed procedure named him “Lazarus” after the man the Bible says Jesus brought back to life. Snell has another name for that escape artist of a dog. “I call him Houdini,” she said.

No one connected with the shelter is exactly sure what happened to prevent Lazarus’ death, and officials declined to release the name of the contract veterinarian who performed the injection.

Walking Dead: Mass Panic in Nimba County as Dead Ebola Patients ‘Come Back to Life’

Fear and panic is spreading in Nimba County, an African community where dead Ebola patients have reportedly “resurrected” and roams around among the living. The victims were allegedly women in their 40s and 60s who was thought to have died from the virus in Liberia’s Nimba County. According to the local paper The New Dawn, the pair of “walking dead” is believed to be amongst the living. The report said Dorris Quote, and Ma Kabeh who who said to be in her 60s, both from Hope Village Community and the Catholic Community in Ganta, were about to be buried when they “rose from the dead.” Witnesses claimed Ma Kabeh had stayed indoors for about two nights without receiving medication or taking any food before her reported death. When residents gathered to prepare the burial of the dead women, they were shocked to see the dead rise. Aside from the mass panic, many have wondered whether Kebeh had survived the virus after all, if the presumption of her death turned out to be false.
