President Barack Obama said it is easier in some neighborhoods to get a gun than a book. Is that true? The fact checkers weighed in and we have their verdict: it’s false. Here’s why: To buy a gun in most states, you need to be 18 and pass a background check. To get a book, all you need is a library card. And when it comes to price, there is no evidence that books are more expensive than guns. So why does Obama keep making this false claim?

Those were some of the last words that Fr. Ed Thompson, a priest and recovering alcoholic, said to a friend who documented his 92-year life story on video. It was a heartwarming tale of the Prodigal Son who came home, told just before his real home-going. Fr. Ed wasn’t the typical pious priest. He’d struggled with addiction for most of his adult life. But he knew one thing: Jesus Christ was the answer.
Fr. Ed was born eight minutes before his identical twin brother David. Before the boys were born, a doctor told their mother to abort them, because she would contract rheumatoid arthritis if she carried them to term. She refused. Fr. Ed said that when he and his brother were born, his mother took each of their tiny hands and made the sign of the cross over her newborn babies. He and his brother later looked back on that event as one that set their lives in motion.
A Testing and a Calling
Both boys entered the priesthood, David one year before Ed. Although he received his calling at age 11, he wasn’t “pious,” and continued to live a normal life — he dated girls, played sports and worked at Westinghouse. When he finally told his mother and father he wanted to be a Catholic priest, they discouraged him. His father accused him of trying to be like his brother. His mother said he needed to work to help support the family. Even the local priest agreed with his parents.
Later, though, he said, he realized they were testing him. “They wanted to make as sure as they could that I was doing it for the right reason,” he said.
After entering the seminary and then working as a Vocation Director for 12 years, in 1974 Fr. Ed was made a pastor in a Philadelphia church. “But I had a problem,” he said sadly. “It was a drinking problem. I was a real, live alcoholic.” He only lasted a year as a pastor there. “I was so sick and so ashamed that after a year I just left the parish.”
He went to Florida and got a job selling graves for a cemetery. Even though his mother urged his brother David to “bring him back,” David told her he would wait until Fr. Ed was ready. “Thanks be to God, my dear brother David never tried to call me, never tried to rescue me.” After about six months, he called his brother, who told him he’d immediately come to Florida.
“You know what he told me?” Fr. Ed said. “’Edward, you’re an alcoholic. And you’re a liar.’ Alcoholics when they’re drinking cannot tell the truth. They can’t survive telling the truth.” That’s when he joined Alcoholics Anonymous, and his brother arranged for him to stay in a rehabilitation house, where he lived for over a year. His job at the house was slopping the pigs. “So the Prodigal Son story was very much alive in my life,” Fr. Ed said wryly.
Fr. Ed was once again given the opportunity to practice as a priest when the bishop of Reno, Nevada, took him in. But once again he fell victim to his addiction. He celebrated the event by drinking scotch. It caught up with him about a year later, he said, and over his fifteen years as a priest in Nevada, Fr. Ed said he was sent to 3 six-month treatment centers for his alcoholism, after which he said the money ran out and the diocese told him, “We’re saying goodbye to you. You’ll have to make it on your own.”
At the Point of Desperation
Just at the point of desperation as he was kicked out of the parish and the treatment center, Fr. Ed had an experience that turned his life around. A woman was trying to reach him, and he decided to call the phone number even though he didn’t recognize the name.
It turned out to be someone he had helped 30 years prior. Jesus told her that he was in trouble and she was to help him, she said. He admitted he needed help and had nowhere to go and she invited him into her home in Florida, where he had four cats as roommates. “I was really afraid of cats,” he said. He worked for his room and board, cleaning up after the cats, cutting the grass and going to the grocery store. He was thankful for a place to stay.
Then ‘a miracle happened,’ Fr. Ed said.
He was given yet another opportunity to serve in a church, there in Florida. At first he was given only simple jobs like training altar servers or reading the Scriptures during worship. But then his bishop in Florida convinced the bishop of Reno to let him work as a priest once again.
“For the last 23 years, I’ve had the joy of being a parish priest here at St. Mary Magdalene parish,” he said. “It has been 23 years of the happiest times in my whole priesthood, my whole life. … I offer holy mass, hear confessions, teach the Scriptures, visit the sick, bury the dead. If I do those things, and do them well, I’ve had a wonderful priesthood.”
Fr. Ed’s last words on the video were intended to reach others, offer encouragement and hope and perhaps reveal the secret of what kept him going during the years he struggled.
“Whatever you do,” he said as he looked into the camera, “hold onto Jesus Christ … in the holy Communion. … He is there. He is our religion, He is our Church. … Hold onto Him. Believe in Him. Never let Him slip out of your life.” (For more from the author of “A Tale of Redemption: Recovering Alcoholic Priest Says ‘Hold onto Jesus’ in Video Released After His Death” please click HERE)

Here is the transcript and the revelation by Assange…
JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Julian, I want to mention something else. In March, you launched a searchable archive for over 30,000 emails and email attachments sent to and from Hillary Clinton’s private email server while she was secretary of state. The 50,547 pages of documents span the time from June 2010 to August 2014; 7,500 of the documents were sent by Hillary Clinton herself. The emails were made available in the form of thousands of PDFs by the U.S. State Department as the result of a Freedom of Information Act request. Why did you do this, and what’s the importance, from your perspective, of being able to create a searchable base?
JULIAN ASSANGE: Well, WikiLeaks has become the rebel library of Alexandria. It is the single most significant collection of information that doesn’t exist elsewhere, in a searchable, accessible, citable form, about how modern institutions actually behave. And it’s gone on to set people free from prison, where documents have been used in their court cases; hold the CIA accountable for renditions programs; feed into election cycles, which have resulted in the termination of, in some case—or contributed to the termination of governments, in some cases, taken the heads of intelligence agencies, ministers of defense and so on. So, you know, our civilizations can only be as good as our knowledge of what our civilisation is. We can’t possibly hope to reform that which we do not understand.
So, those Hillary Clinton emails, they connect together with the cables that we have published of Hillary Clinton, creating a rich picture of how Hillary Clinton performs in office, but, more broadly, how the U.S. Department of State operates. So, for example, the disastrous, absolutely disastrous intervention in Libya, the destruction of the Gaddafi government, which led to the occupation of ISIS of large segments of that country, weapons flows going over to Syria, being pushed by Hillary Clinton, into jihadists within Syria, including ISIS, that’s there in those emails. There’s more than 1,700 emails in Hillary Clinton’s collection, that we have released, just about Libya alone.

CNN went hunting for comments Tuesday about a presidential candidate who owes an apology to the family of a slain U.S. service member.
The network got them, but probably not in the fashion for which it had hoped.
CNN Newsroom featured Charles Woods, the father of Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, who was killed in the 2012 Benghazi attack. During the interview, CNN host Carol Costello repeatedly tried to get Woods to call for Donald Trump to apologize for his ongoing spat with Khizir Khan, the father of a slain Army officer, attacked Trump at last week’s Democratic National Convention, sparking a heated response from Trump that has since become controversial.
After playing a clip about the Khan spat, Costello asked Woods, “Should Mr. Trump apologize?”
Woods repeated an earlier statement that he didn’t know what Trump had said, then fired out a demand for an apology he knew was overdue.
“I know who should apologize, and that would be Hillary Clinton, for lying to the American families who lost their loved ones as well as to the American public,” Woods said. “She hasn’t apologized for that yet. In fact, she’s even doubled down and called us liars which is not appropriate, not at all. Like I say, either she’s lying or she has a bad memory.”
Costello then asked Woods whom he would endorse.
“Well, my son would still be alive if Mrs. Clinton was performing her job properly as secretary of state. So in good conscience, I cannot vote for the person who was directly responsible for the death of my son,” he said.
He then explained his reasoning
“There is only two choices and obviously I support Donald Trump. The main reason is because national security, as well as the economy, are the two most important issues that voters are going to have to decide upon next November,” he said.
Woods has made it clear he has not forgiven Clinton for telling him that the Benghazi attack was related to a video when she knew it was not.
“She (Clinton) stood in font of my son’s casket and blamed the rage directed at American embassies on a video she said we had no part of,” Woods said Tuesday on America’s Newsroom. “When they had the casket ceremony she also lied to the American public. These are her words as best as I can recall, ‘rage was directed at American embassies as a result of that awful video that we were not responsible for.’ She said basically the same thing in private to the families that were grieving and then a half hour later she said basically the same thing as far as causation to the American public.” (For more from the author of “Father of Slain Service Member Wants One Presidential Candidate to Apologize” please click HERE)

In his latest expression of the odds he sees against him, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Monday he has concerns about the integrity of this fall’s presidential election.
“I’m afraid the election’s going to be rigged, I have to be honest,” Trump told a crowd in Columbus, Ohio, during a campaign appearance. He did not go into detail.
Complaints about a “rigged system” have been a feature of Trump’s campaign, targeting first the Republican establishment and later the efforts of the Democratic Party to hamstring the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
“We’ll will never be able to fix a rigged system by counting on the same people who have rigged it in the first place,” Trump said in a June speech. “The insiders wrote the rules of the game to keep themselves in power and in the money. That’s why we’re asking Bernie Sanders’ voters to join our movement: so together we can fix the system for all Americans. So important. This includes fixing all of our many disastrous trade deals. … Because it’s not just the political system that’s rigged, it’s the whole economy. It’s rigged by big donors who want to keep wages down. It’s rigged by big businesses who want to leave our country, fire our workers, and sell their products back into the United States with absolutely no consequences for them. It’s rigged by bureaucrats who are trapping kids in failing schools. It’s rigged against you, the American people.”
As for the impact of the “rigged” system on the election, Trump supporter Roger Stone has said voter fraud is “widespread” and that if Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton wins a state like Florida after polls show Trump in the lead, the election would be “illegitimate.”
“If there’s voter fraud, this election will be illegitimate, the election of the winner will be illegitimate, we will have a constitutional crisis, widespread civil disobedience, and the government will no longer be the government,” Stone said. He also promised a “bloodbath” if the Democrats attempt to “steal” the election.
During Trump’s Columbus appearance on Monday, he focused on the economy.
“They call it the Rust Belt for a reason: because everything is rusting and rotting,” Trump said. “They’ve lost their jobs, they’re moving to Mexico.
He said that if elected, he would end the cycle of companies that move U.S. jobs to Mexico.
“If you leave Ohio, you’re not going to make your product and sell it back to Ohio . … You’re going to have a tax to pay,” Trump said. (For more from the author of “Trump Makes Ominous Prediction About November Vote” please click HERE)

As delegates and other attendees came and went outside the Democratic National Convention, The Daily Signal asked some of them what issue they are more concerned about this election season—climate change or the threat of terrorism. Here’s what they had to say.

A host of Hollywood celebrities are descending on Philadelphia to help crown Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee. Lena Dunham, Eva Longoria, Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks and Tony Goldwyn are only some of the names who’ll be on hand to cheer Hillary. (Yes, the guy who plays a President on a show called Scandal is plugging for Hillary.) However, as NewsBusters is noting, Hollywood support for Hillary goes well beyond fundraisers, actors at campaign events or even the entertainment media putting their finger on the scales in favor of liberals.
“It’s typical for the media to get involved in a campaign during an election cycle,” NewsBusters reports. “But in the case of Hillary Clinton, the media have been laying the groundwork for her ascendance to the Presidency since the early 1990s.”
While Dunham was abusing her sister, while Desperate Housewife Longoria was preparing to move to Wisteria Lane, and while Goldwyn was still the bad guy in Ghost, Hollywood was creating Hillary-inspired female presidents and politicians, “fictional TV characters endorsing the real-life former FLOTUS, and children’s books singing her praises.” There was even a President Hillary Clinton in a show back in the ’90s.
A couple of the clearer examples: When Hillary was mulling her 2008 run, ABC launched Commander-in-Chief, a drama starring Geena Davis as the first female President. The Traditional Values Coalition and conservative commentators suggested at the time the show was really a thinly-veiled attempt to boost the prospects of a Hillary candidacy. ABC and Davis denied the charge.
In 2014, as Hillary was gearing up for her current run, CBS premiered a drama called Madam Secretary, starring Téa Lenoi. Notice anything, aside from the obvious fact that leading Hollywood actors are typically better looking than most of us?
It’s also worth noting that one of the executive producers of Madam Secretary is Morgan Freeman. The actor has not only endorsed Clinton, he’s cut campaign commercials for her.
Here is a video compilation put together by NewsBusters of a smattering of Hollywood’s pro-Hillary efforts:
Like any good Hollywood script, this one has a twist. Not all the actors coming to Philadelphia are there to fete Hillary. Actress Rosario Dawson, a pro-Sanders activist, told The New York Times last week, “I am definitely going to the DNC, and I’ll definitely be protested outside of the DNC.” In fact, she’s hoping to get arrested.
Oscar-winner and noted liberal activist Susan Sarandon isn’t there to hug it out with Hillary either. Sarandon has been a fierce critic of the former Secretary of State, going so far as to suggest that Clinton would be “more dangerous” in office than Donald Trump.
How’s the show end? The series finale airs November 8th. (For more from the author of “Hollywood’s Been Pushing a Hillary Presidency for 25 Years” please click HERE)

DNC protesters repeatedly chanted obscenities at Fox News Channel’s Jesse Watters, forcing him to give up his reporting from the scene and walk away.
The video posted by Raw Story on its Facebook page Tuesday afternoon shows Watters at Philadelphia’s City Hall, site of some of the largest protests over the Democratic National Committee’s treatment of Bernie Sanders, as revealed by recently released hacked emails.
Watters can be seen trying to conduct an interview among hundreds of protesters, when many began chanting, “F— Fox News, F— Fox News…”
As the Fox News personality, who is a Philadelphia native, began to walk away, a new chant begins, “KKK Fox News…KKK Fox News….”
As reported by Western Journalism, Fox News has been on the receiving end of several insults and obscene gestures recently.
Earlier this month, two men passing by flashed their middle finger at the camera while Fox News senior political correspondent Carl Cameron was doing a live shot in front of Trump Tower in New York.
The act came one day after comedian D.L. Hughley appeared on The Kelly File and stated, “The only place racism doesn’t exist is Fox News and the police department. That’s absolutely true.”
“That’s insulting,” host Megyn Kelly responded. “You just insulted millions of people watching this channel.”
“And I’m insulted by the things I hear on this network, so we’re even,” Hughley fired back. “I could care less about insulting people that insult me on a daily basis.”
That same second week of July, Black Lives Matter protesters surrounded a Fox News reporter in Minnesota, with some yelling at him to “get the f— out of here” and one threatening to “knock his a– out.”
A woman nearby joined in: “Shut the f— up! The press is just as bad as the police!”
Another woman at that event also accused the Fox correspondent of being racist and siding with the police. “That’s who you are working with!” she said, adding, “He is part of the white supremacy. You are a disgrace to journalism! You are a white supremacist!” (For more from the author of “WATCH What Happens to Fox News Reporter When He Stand Right in the Middle of Democrat Protesters Mob” please click HERE)
