South and East: Get Ready for the Icebox (+video)

By Doyle Rice.

Arctic air will plunge toward the South and East on Wednesday and Thursday, after as much as 2 feet of record-breaking snow buried portions of the upper Midwest.

Temperatures only made it into the single digits, teens and 20s Tuesday across much of the north-central U.S. — 20 to 40 degrees below average for many areas, the National Weather Service said.

Wind chills were as cold as minus 20 in parts of western Montana. By Wednesday morning, wind chills could drop to minus 35 in some spots — low enough to cause frostbite in 10 minutes.

Weather service meteorologist Paul Kocin said the cold air will reach the Appalachians to mid-South by Wednesday morning and then hit the East Coast by Thursday morning. The East Coast will see cooler temperatures but be spared from the dramatic lows in the middle of the country, Kocin said.

Freezing temperatures are still possible in parts of the South and East, AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.

Appreciation & Encouragement For Those Who Serve (+video)

Veterans Day is the day on which we thank and honor those who serve and have served in the military. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 21.8 million military vets in the U.S. Over 1.3 million of those served during multiple wars–837,000 in both Gulf War eras, 211,000 in both the Korean War and Vietnam era and 147,000 in World War II and Korea. There were 49,500 who served in both the Vietnam War and both Gulf War eras and 54,000 who served during the Korean War, Vietnam War and World War II.

President Ronald Reagan understood the huge sacrifice those who serve make and one of his noteworthy speeches honoring military veterans took place on the 40th anniversary of D-Day. The ceremony took place on the northern coast of France, on the spot where Allied soldiers had stormed ashore to liberate Europe from the Nazis–at the site of the U.S. Ranger Monument at Pointe du Hoc.

Gathered together at this event were D-Day veterans and world leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II (UK), King Olav V (Norway), Queen Beatrix (The Netherlands), King Baudouin I (Belgium), Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau (Canada) and Grand Duke Jean (Luxembourg).

The following is an excerpt from that address:

We stand on a lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France. The air is soft, but 40 years ago at this moment, the air was dense with smoke and the cries of men, and the air was filled with the crack of rifle fire and the roar of cannon. At dawn, on the morning of the 6th of June, 1944, 225 Rangers jumped off the British landing craft and ran to the bottom of these cliffs. Their mission was one of the most difficult and daring of the invasion: to climb these sheer and desolate cliffs and take out the enemy guns. The Allies had been told that some of the mightiest of these guns were here and they would be trained on the beaches to stop the Allied advance.

Obama to Boehner: You’ve Got Until the End of the Year to Pass an Immigration Bill or Else I Order Executive Amnesty (+video)

President Obama and Rep. John BoehnerHeads he wins, tails you lose. As Gabe Malor says, this deadline is completely unserious: It’d be bad enough for Republicans to pass a weak immigration bill next year, but that at least would have the virtue of giving the GOP’s new crop of senators a crack at voting on it. Trying to sneak a bill through the lame-duck session, before Cory Gardner, Joni Ernst, and the rest of the freshmen have a say, would mean all-out war at this point between Boehner, McConnell, and the base. Joe Biden at least seems to understand that. That’s why he floated a mid-February deadline at Friday’s White House summit with the GOP before Obama gave him a death stare that shut him up. I think Obama understands it too, actually. His ultimatum here is likely born not out of ignorance of Boehner’s predicament but a new determination to make Republicans pay politically after they swamped him last Tuesday. Issuing executive amnesty so soon after a landslide is an act of supreme defiance of the election results, in keeping with last week’s “I’m listening to all the people who didn’t vote” press conference. And it’s also a middle finger to congressional Democrats who spent the last six months giving him the “Barack who?” treatment on the stump. If executive amnesty puts them in a tough spot too, screw ‘em. Besides, the only Dems left in Congress at this point are in states or districts so blue that they won’t lose in 2016 no matter how crazy he gets. He’s now fully entered the YOLO phase of his presidency.

Actually, maybe Obama doesn’t understand Boehner’s predicament. Here’s a tidbit from WSJ’s mini-bombshell on Friday about secret talks on immigration between the White House and the House GOP over the past year.

Mr. Obama offered Mr. Boehner what he saw as a compromise: The White House would defer executive action on immigration until after the summer to give the speaker maneuvering room, a deal Mr. Obama confirmed in his Wednesday news conference.

In the discussion, however, he followed up with his go-to talking point in dealings with Mr. Boehner: “There will never be another Republican president again if you don’t get a handle on immigration reform.”

Prominent Scientist Says ‘Religion Will Go Away in a Generation’ If Atheists Use This Tactic to Teach Children (+video)

Cosmologist and theoretical physicist Lawrence M. Krauss believes that religion could be eradicated — or at least largely removed from society — in just one generation.

Krauss, who made this claim while delivering a speech to the Victorian Skeptics Cafe in Australia in late August, spoke, among other subjects, about how children should be taught about faith in schools, claiming that religious systems shouldn’t be treated “as if they’re all sacred.”

Instead, he argued for changes in how children learn about religion and critical thinking — proposals that are just beginning to gain traction this week.

“What we need to do is present comparative religion as a bunch of interesting historical anecdotes and show the silly reasons why they each did what they did,” he said. “Instead of shying away from it, we have to explicitly educate people to confront their own misconceptions.”

Sharyl Attkisson Just Released a Creepy Video of Her Computer That Will Likely Send Chills Down Your Spine

Former CBS News Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson — who claims the government hacked her computer, TV and phone while she reported on the Benghazi terror attack — has released a new video showing what could be evidence of the government taking over her computer.

“That very night, with [White House spokesman Eric] Schultz, [White House Press Secretary Jay] Carney and company freshly steaming over my Benghazi reporting, I’m home doing final research and crafting questions for the next day’s interview with [Thomas] Pickering. Suddenly data in my computer file begins wiping at hyperspeed before my very eyes. Deleted line by line in a split second: it’s gone, gone, gone,” Attkisson writes in her book.

In the book, Stonewalled: My Fight for Truth Against the Forces of Obstruction, Intimidation, and Harassment in Obama’s Washington, Attkisson explains the difficulties she faced while trying to get at the truth of exactly what happened on the night of September 11, 2012 in Benghazi, Libya, where four American diplomats died, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens.

Boehner Wants Immigration Reform: ‘It Is Just Time to Deal With It’ (+video)

House Speaker John Boehner said at a press conference today that “it is just time to deal with” the issue of immigration reform, indicating he hopes to enact an immigration law in the coming year.

Meanwhile, Boehner’s spokesman, Michael Steel, did not respond this afternoon to an emailed question from CNSNews.com asking him whether the speaker would rule out enacting a law that granted legal status or a pathway to citizenship to illegal aliens.

Boehner also warned President Obama not to take unilateral action on immigration, saying that if he did so it would prevent Congress from actually passing legislation for the same purpose.

“I want to talk to our members about how to move forward, but I’ve made my position very clear,” Boehner said. “It is time for the Congress of the United States to deal with a very difficult issue in our society. This immigration issue has become a political football over the last ten years or more. It is just time to deal with it.”

When a reporter asked Boehner whether a Republican presidential nominee could “afford to run if you have not acted on this issue,” Boehner said: “This is not about politics. This is about doing the right thing for the country.”

Romney Promises Immigration 'Reform' Will Pass if GOP Gains Controls of Senate Tomorrow (+video)

Photo Credit: YouTubeMitt Romney speculated today that a Republican-controlled Senate would mean passage of a conservative immigration reform bill focused on border security that President Obama would sign.

Appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” Romney predicted that although Obama would move ahead with his own executive action on citizenship for illegal immigrants, Republicans would pass a bill in line with conservative priorities if the party wins control of the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

“You’re going to see a provision, first of all, to secure the border,” said Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee. “Second of all, to deal with those who come here illegally. And third, to make sure our immigration policies are more open and transparent.”
He added:

“That’s going to happen. You’re going to see a bill actually reach the desk of the president if we finally have someone besides Harry Reid sitting in the Senate [as majority leader]. So, we’re going to get it done.”

EPA Director on Environmental Laws: ‘Enforcement Really is Democracy in Action’ (+video)

Photo Credit: APEPA Director Gina McCarthy has praised environmental lawyers for their work, telling them “enforcement really is democracy in action.”

“When I think about how effective we’ve been I keep coming back to the same reason for that effectiveness, it’s because our laws have teeth, it’s because EPA is empowered to enforce them,” McCarthy told attendees at the American Bar Association Fall Conference.

Ex-CBS Reporter: Federal Agency Bugged My Computer (+video)

Photo Credit: The O’Reilly FactorBy Kyle Smith and Bruce Golding.

A former CBS News reporter who quit the network over claims it kills stories that put President Obama in a bad light says she was spied on by a “government-related entity” that planted classified documents on her computer.

In her new memoir, Sharyl Attkisson says a source who arranged to have her laptop checked for spyware in 2013 was “shocked” and “flabbergasted” at what the analysis revealed.

“This is outrageous. Worse than anything Nixon ever did. I wouldn’t have believed something like this could happen in the United States of America,” Attkisson quotes the source saying.

She speculates that the motive was to lay the groundwork for possible charges against her or her sources.

Attkisson says the source, who’s “connected to government three-letter agencies,” told her the computer was hacked into by “a sophisticated entity that used commercial, nonattributable spyware that’s proprietary to a government agency: either the CIA, FBI, the Defense Intelligence Agency or the National Security Agency.”

Confirmed: Sharyl Attkisson’s Computer Was Hacked, Heavily Monitored By The Federal Government

By Katie Pavlich.

Last year Former CBS News investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson, who is known for incredible work on Operation Fast and Furious, Benghazi and other White House scandals, noticed her computers at work and at home were acting strange. She suspected someone had hacked into her computer, specifically into a desktop in her home due to the machine turning on and off by itself at all hours of the night. An initial review of the hard drive revealed that her computer had in fact been compromised, but it wasn’t known at the time who did it. The intruder into her system didn’t take any financial information and it was clear they were looking for something else.

The news of Attkisson’s computer problems came shortly after we found out the phones and emails of Fox News reporters James Rosen (and his parents) and William LaJeunesse were monitored. Rosen’s movements were also monitored by government officials and he was named as a criminal co-conspirator in an affidavit from the Department of Justice to a judge. All three reporters, LaJeunesse, Rosen and Attkisson work on stories typically unfavorable to the administration (and all three have also scrutinized former administrations, including those headed by a Republican).
