Dead Ponies Found Partially Eaten by Something in a Pasture

A week after investigators closed the book on a rash of mysterious horse attacks along the North Carolina-South Carolina border, reports of four ponies found dead in their pasture surfaced. . .

The Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement Department is investigating their deaths in Chesnee after meeting with the owner Wednesday, WYFF reported. . .

The owner, James Sexton, told WSPA he found the Welsh Ponies in their pasture off Highway 11 on Dec. 8, when he went to bring them hay and feed.

“Whatever got them ate her throat out and the two black colts, it ate their faces off,” he said, according to WSPA.

An incident report stated there weren’t any wounds indicative of “human-related involvement,” the media outlet reported. (Read more from “Dead Ponies Found Partially Eaten by Something in a Pasture” HERE)

Check out These Pics of the ‘Wolf-Like Creature’ Shot in Montana

It’s Friday, so it’s the perfect time for a story about a mysterious “wolf-like creature” shot in Montana that has people talking about the “Dogman” conspiracy and the continued existence of a prehistoric species of wolves.

“We have no idea what this was until we get a DNA report back,” said Bruce Auchly, information manager for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, of the wolf-like animal shot near a ranch in Montana. “It was near a rancher’s place, it was shot, and our game wardens went to investigate. The whole animal was sent to our lab in Bozeman. That’s the last I ever heard of it.”

The Great Falls Tribune reports that the creature, which “at this point, no one is 100 percent sure” how to identify, was shot and killed on May 16 on a ranch outside of Denton. “With long grayish fur, a large head and an extended snout, the animal shared many of the same characteristics as a wolf; but its ears were too large, it’s legs and body too short, its fur uncharacteristic of that common to a wolf,” the Tribune reports.

Social media in Lewistown exploded with theories over the creature last week, with some saying it was a starved “grizzly cub,” others suggesting it was a descendent of prehistoric dire wolves, and others going right over the conspiracy cliff with the “Dogman” theory.

“That could very well be what’s being called Dogman,” one person speculated. “They’re spotted each day and the government quells any and all reports. Several people report being strong armed into keeping quiet about their reports by men wearing black suits. These are just facts. Look into if if you don’t believe it.” (Read more from “Check out These Pics of the ‘Wolf-Like Creature’ Shot in Montana” HERE)

Turns out, Feds Are Wasting Billions Protecting ‘Endangered’ Animals That Are Just Fine

The federal government has spent hundreds of millions in taxpayer money to protect species listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) that were never in danger of extinction, according to a Heritage Foundation report.

Robert Gordon, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Free Markets and Regulatory Reform, studied the Endangered Species Act and the federal bureaus in charge of administering and regulating it. Gordon released his report, which focuses on inconsistencies and waste in the listing and de-listing of species, Tuesday.

Former-President Richard Nixon signed the ESA into law in 1973, following the president’s push for stronger environmental protections the previous year. Nixon charged his “environmental awakening” for stronger environmental regulation in areas such as sewage, air and noise just two years after the Environmental Protection Agency’s founding.

Since the ESA’s enactment, 1,661 U.S. plants and animals have qualified for federal protection as either “threatened” or “endangered” — or close to extinction. Forty-five years later, slightly more than two percent, or 38 species, have been officially de-listed as “recovered.” About half of the officially “recovered” species where never actually in danger of extinction but placed on the list because of bad or missing data or taxonomic — the way animals are classified into species and subspecies, errors — according to Gordon . . .

Often when conducting preliminary research often serving to justify whether a species is listed or not, federal researchers miscount the actual number of animals in a population or species and reach a conclusion regularly off by a factor of 10 — sometimes more. Animal Tongue Nailed to Tree in Chicago Sending a Message?

It weathered and hardened from gray-black to a leathery brown. From a distance, as professionals and students walked past the tree at the west end of Palmer Square Park to trains and buses each morning, it could have been mistaken for a hanging length of bark. But within 10 feet, it was clearly something else: a footlong tongue.

Why was a tongue, likely a cow’s, so carefully disfigured and displayed near the luxury apartments and condominiums in rapidly gentrifying Logan Square? In a neighborhood that’s now home to loads of 20-something hipsters, it could be an elaborate performance art piece or a joke.

But Logan Square and nearby Humboldt Park have much longer histories as working-class enclaves filled with first- and second-generation immigrants, so another possibility presents itself.

Tongues have long played roles in Afro-Caribbean religions like Santeria. The symbolic engine of speech, a tongue can be used in many such faiths to try to get someone to remain silent, according to Lisa Poirier, an assistant professor of religious studies at DePaul University.

“Often it has to do with a court case,” Poirier said. “You can take a tongue and bind it up to get someone to shut up.” (Read more from “Animal Tongue Nailed to Tree in Chicago Sending a Message?” HERE)

People Paying $50,000 to Clone Pets

. . .For more than 15 years, ViaGen has been cloning livestock. They have cloned thousands of cattle, more than 250 horses, and thousands of pigs and sheep, too. Two years ago, they starting doing dogs and cats . . .

Now you can — or at least duplicate that animal’s genetic DNA — and have the “new” puppy born again . . .

Cloning starts when your vet takes four small skin samples from your pet. It is a simple procedure. Most dogs go home the same day. Some owners choose to have it done when their dog is already under anesthesia for something as routine as a dental cleaning . . .

Next, the cells from you dog are put into a donor egg cell. ViaGen replaces the nucleus of the egg with the DNA from your pet. Then, the egg is put in a surrogate dog. The surrogate is chosen based on size, previous experience as a mom and for her ability to care for the puppies . . .

“The cloning fee is $50,000 to clone a dog,” said [Melain] Rodriguez. “Half of that fee is paid up front as a deposit, and that secures their spot on the wait list. So we do, there is a lot of interest. We do currently have a waiting list. It’s fairly short right now. We can usually get to the cloning in one to two months.” (Read more from “People Paying $50,000 to Clone Pets” HERE)

What Happens When You Leave Your Dog at Home Alone

…Most dog lovers have no idea how their animals cope once they have been left alone.

Now scientists have revealed how dogs spend up to half an hour howling, barking and whining after their owner leaves them alone . . .

The first few minutes of isolation are the most stressful for a dog, according to the researchers.

Alice Potter, a pet scientist at the RSPCA, told MailOnline: ‘The separation reaction is displayed soon after the departure of the owner, normally commencing within 30 minutes, and often within the first few minutes.’

‘The most common behavioural signs of seperation-related behaviour are destructive behaviour often targeted at the door the owner leaves through, various types of vocalisations (howling, barking and whining), defecating and urinating. The baby goat, born in village Felda in Malaysia, has a distinctively human face and bi-pedal frame.

The deformed ungulate did not survive long after birth, farmer Ibrahim Basir confirmed.

The 63-year-old said he was first alerted to the unnatural birth by one of his farm-hands.

Rats! Several Big U.S. Cities Seeing Surge in Rodent Complaints

Rat_diabeticSome denizens of America’s great cities probably wouldn’t mind a visit from the Pied Piper right about now.

Several major U.S. cities—including Boston, Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.— have seen significant surges in rat complaints from their residents in recent months, according to city data reviewed by USA TODAY.

Grousing about rats has long been city-dweller sport, but the long-tailed, sharp-toothed nuisances have now become so populous and so aggressive that some cities are getting creative in their efforts to stay ahead of rodents even as some frustrated city residents are increasingly taking matters into their own hands.

In Chicago, which historically notches more rat complaints than any other city, residents’ reports of rodent activity rose by about 70% in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the same period last year.

With the city on pace to shatter the more than 41,000 complaints it received in 2012, Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently acknowledged in a radio interview that rats in the Windy City have become “a real problem.” (Read more from “Rats! Several Big U.S. Cities Seeing Surge in Rodent Complaints” HERE)

‘Unlike Anything I’ve Ever Seen’: Mike Rowe Describes His Wild Night With a Pack of Rat-Hunting Dogs in New York City [+video]

On a freezing night in late December, a group a of dog-lovers gathered on a quiet corner by a park in lower Manhattan.

Their purpose? To deploy their household pets as soldiers in the never-ending war against New York City’s legendary population of rats.

Mike Rowe, host of CNN’s “Somebody’s Got To Do It,” spent an evening with the group, which calls itself R.A.T.S. (Ryder’s Alley Trencher-fed Society), last year.

Speaking with TheBlaze, Rowe described the nocturnal outing as something “unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”

“Mild manner little terriers, these loyal pets are transformed into the hound of the Baskervilles,” said Rowe. “Together they go into the city and they start killing rats.” (Read more from “‘Unlike Anything I’ve Ever Seen’: Mike Rowe Describes His Wild Night With a Pack of Rat-Hunting Dogs in New York City” HERE)

Where Is the Left’s Outrage? Obama Kills Bill to Save Battle Hero Dogs

Seven award-winning service, police, and military dogs descended upon Capitol Hill to lobby Congress in support of the National Defense Authorization Act this week.

The dogs, who had all recently been honored at the American Humane Association’s (AHA) Hero Dog Awards, appeared before an overflow crowd that included congressmen from both parties at the Cannon House office building. Their owners and handlers spoke on their behalf, advocating for a number of issues including adoption of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The act, which includes a provision ensuring military dogs are returned to the United States at the end of their service, was vetoed by President Obama over funding concerns.

The bill was passed with large bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress. The vote was 270-156 in the House of Representatives and 70-27 in the Senate. If those numbers hold, the Senate would be able to override the veto, but the numbers in the House would require representatives to switch their vote.

AHA said they were targeting 12 congressmen in particular.

“We’re down to 12 members in the House to override the veto threat that President Obama has made,” AHA president Robin Ganzert said. “So if we can get to those 12 members and make sure they support the NDAA with the possible veto threat then our military dog legislation we have been fighting for more than a year will become reality.” (Read more from “Where Is the Left’s Outrage?
