Dem Mayor Announces Plan to Ban AR-15s in City Limits

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones (D) announced plans Tuesday to ban AR-15s and AK-47s inside city limits.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that a bill containing the ban will soon come before the Board of Aldermen and will contain other gun controls as well.

Regulations on gun kits are some of the other controls expected in the bill.

Jones said, “We’re ready to fight like hell at the local level to prevent gun violence, protect our babies, and to keep our communities safe.” (Read more from “Dem Mayor Announces Plan to Ban AR-15s in City Limits” HERE)

Democrats Push 1,000% Tax on AR-15s

House Democrats introduced legislation Friday that would place a 1,000 percent excise tax on AR-15s and other firearms they refer to as “assault weapons.”

FOX News reported the tax would also apply to “high capacity” magazines.

Rep. Don Beyer (D) and 24 other Democrats are behind the tax which they also pushed last year.

The imposition would force the price of a $500 firearm to jump to $5,000 and “a weapon that normally costs $2,000 would force customers to pay more than $20,000.” (Read more from “Democrats Push 1,000% Tax on AR-15s” HERE)

AR-15 Firearms Placed in County Schools as a Security Measure

AR-15 guns have been placed on site at Madison County, North Carolina, schools as a security precaution.

“We were able to put an AR-15 rifle and safe in all of our schools in the county,” Sheriff Buddy Harwood said, according to the Asheville Citizen Times. “We’ve also got breaching tools to go into those safes. We’ve got extra magazines with ammo in those safes.”

“The reason we put the breaching tools in the safes is that in the event we have someone barricaded in a door, we won’t have to wait on the fire department to get there,” Harwood said. “We’ll have those tools to be able to breach that door if needed. I do not want to have to run back out to the car to grab an AR, because that’s time lost. Hopefully we’ll never need it, but I want my guys to be as prepared as prepared can be.” (Read more from “AR-15 Firearms Placed in County Schools as a Security Measure” HERE)

Roofing Company Offers Free AR-15 With Purchase

. . .Matt Thomas, who does marketing for Wiggins Construction, created the idea to offer a free AR-15 to those customers who sign up for a new roof installation.

He wanted to offer something to new Wyoming residents who have fled liberal states, like California.

He explained, “People are moving into Wyoming to get out of the cities and to get away from the regulation and to get away from living in fear. We’re just offering it as almost like, for the people that are recently moving to Wyoming as a ‘Welcome to Wyoming’ gift, and for the people that are here, locals, just a ‘thank you’ for doing business.”

But he’s had reactions – of outrage – from Chicago, from California, from New Hampshire, and more. . .

Not sure how the reports got all around, he noted, “But we are getting phone calls, voicemails from people saying all sorts of negative stuff about us, you know, stuff like ‘baby killers’, and we’re distributing weapons of mass destruction to the public.” (Read more from “Roofing Company Offers Free AR-15 With Purchase” HERE)

New Numbers Reveal How Many AR-15s Americans Own

AR-15s and other similar rifles may remain a key target of anti-gun politicians and activists, but new firearms industry production numbers indicate that they’re still incredibly popular among American gun owners.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation — the trade association for the firearms industry — put out a numbers report on Wednesday indicating that 17.74 million modern sporting rifles are currently privately owned in the United States. Furthermore, the report found that a 54 percent majority of all rifles produced in 2017 were modern sporting rifles. . .

Recently, MSRs have become a focal point of the American gun control debate. They’re often described as “assault weapons” by anti-gun politicians and are the subject of proposed bans, restrictions and confiscation, such as the “mandatory buyback” policy previously proposed by former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke earlier this year. . .

But even with almost 18 million in private ownership, MSRs comprise just a small fraction of Americans’ privately-owned hardware. Wednesday’s figures also estimated that the total number of privately-owned American firearms between the years 1986 and 2018 was 422.9 million guns. That estimate is based on information from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) as well as preliminary manufacturing and exportation numbers. On the subject of ammunition, NSSF says that over 8 billion rounds “of all calibers and gauges” were produced for the U.S. market in 2018. Pregnant Mother Uses AR-15 to Defend Against Thugs, Saves Her Husband

Another gun control talking point has been debunked after a pregnant woman, who remains unnamed, used an AR-15 to defend herself and her family from a violent home invasion.

Masked individuals broke into her Florida home and severely beat her husband, who suffered serious injuries. He thought he was going to die. . .

King said the two suspects grabbed his 11-year old daughter and his wife grabbed their AR-15. She shot one of them, who then ran out of the house and died in a ditch nearby. The other suspect is still on the run.

“Them guys came in with two normal pistols and my AR stopped it,” he explained, again to Spectrum News. “[She] evened the playing field and kept them from killing me.” (Read more from “Pregnant Mother Uses AR-15 to Defend Against Thugs, Saves Her Husband” HERE)

Dealership Will Give Car Buyers an American Flag, a Bible, and an AR-15

A car dealership in Honea Path, South Carolina, is offering everyone who buys an automobile an American flag, a Bible, and a voucher for a Smith & Wesson AR-15 rifle.

The dealership’s general manager said that the offer reflects the values of their community, and of his team at the dealership.

“We love America, we love God and we like to hunt,” said Derrick Hughes to Fox Carolina. . .

He said that the voucher for the AR-15 rifle could be redeemed at a local gun shop called Locked and Loaded. They will administer the necessary background check in order to redeem the voucher. . .

He says the offer has reached tens of thousands of people, including a man who came from Dawsonville, Georgia, in order to cash in on the promotion. (Read more from “Dealership Will Give Car Buyers an American Flag, a Bible, and an AR-15” HERE)

Colt Ends AR-15 Production for Civilian Use

Gun-maker Colt is suspending its production of rifles for the civilian market including the popular AR-15, the company said Thursday in a shift it attributed to changes in consumer demand and a market already saturated with similar weapons. . .

“The fact of the matter is that over the last few years, the market for modern sporting rifles has experienced significant excess manufacturing capacity,” Colt’s chief executive officer, Dennis Veilleux, said in a written statement. “Given this level of manufacturing capacity, we believe there is adequate supply for modern sporting rifles for the foreseeable future.” . . .

FBI statistics show more than 2.3 million people applied for background checks to purchase guns in August, up from just over 1.8 million in July. Those applications, the best available statistic from tracking gun sales, has have been rising steadily, with a slight decline after Donald Trump was elected president in 2016, something call the “Trump slump.”

Senator Explains to Idiot Reporters Why He Needs an AR-15

(Editor’s note: We’re no fans of Lindsay Graham, an establishment-controlled neocon hack who occasionally says things right – just so he can get reelected in South Carolina. But what he said below is common sense and worth reporting on)

A favorite question that the anti-gun crowd likes to ask is “Why does anyone need an AR-15?” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has a very practical answer to that, which he offered to reporters on Friday.

The New York Post:

Sen. Lindsey Graham knocked down the idea of banning semi-automatic weapons nearly identical to those used by soldiers on the off chance a hurricane slams into his South Carolina town.

“Here’s a scenario that I think is real: There’s a hurricane, a natural disaster, no power, no cops, no anything,” the Republican lawmaker told reporters aboard Air Force One. . .

“Yeah, people, they’re not going to come to the AR-15 home,” Graham responded. “Well, I think if you show up on the porch with an AR-15, they’ll probably go down the street.”

Nonsense: Here’s Why the Civilian AR-15 Isn’t a ‘Weapon of War’

The New York Times says that after last week’s horrific shooting attack on two mosques, New Zealand is having “its gun-debate moment.” And of course, since New Zealand is having a gun-debate moment (despite already having stringent gun control laws), the U.S. anti-gun crowd has to jump in too, once again spreading disinformation about anti-gun activists’ favorite boogeyman: the AR-15.

Every time a semi-automatic rifle with modern-looking aesthetics is used by a bad person to do evil, anti-gun politicians and pundits flood the zone with misinformation and misleading talking points. Sunday night, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough jumped into the fray with a misleading historic take on why the AR-15 modern sporting rifle (MSR) platform is supposedly a battlefield weapon that shouldn’t be protected by the Supreme Court’s Second Amendment cases.

And 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Robert O’Rourke said something similar over the weekend, calling the AR-15 a “weapon of war.”

So let’s clear up a few facts:

As I’ve explained before, in the late 1950s, small-arms whiz Eugene Stoner started designing prototypes for the United States military, with a heavy focus on making issued rifles lighter and theoretically allowing troops to carry more ammunition.

In 1956, Stoner and his team at Armalite started work on the AR-15 prototype, which followed the AR-10 prototype. AR stands for “Armalite Rifle,” not “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.”

The company had a hard time selling the original design and licensed it to Colt in 1959.

In 1963, the original fully automatic, select-fire Armalite turned into to Colt’s design for the newly commissioned M16. That same year, Colt released a semi-automatic version of the AR-15 modular platform to the law enforcement and civilian market.

When the patent expired In 1977, other manufacturers got in on the MSR game.

The typical MSR you’ll find on the wall at your nearest gun store is semi-automatic and fires a .223 round. That means a smaller cartridge and one bullet fired per trigger pull, compared to what became the M16, which used a bigger 5.56 cartridge.

Some MSRs fire both 5.56 rounds and .223 rounds. The main difference is that the 5.56 has more powder behind the bullet. A .223 can be fired out of a 5.56-chambered rifle (although with diminished pressure) but not vice versa. But they’re still semi-automatic either way.

This means that in both the ammunition it fires and the rate at which it fires, the AR-15 is more akin to the famous Ruger Mini14 ranch rifle than the M4 carbine, which is what’s been putting rounds downrange for the Department of Defense since 1994. No AR-15 marketed for civilian use is an automatic rifle.

If you want to legally purchase an automatic firearm made before 1986, there are a ton of prohibitive bureaucratic hoops you have to jump through (plus, they’re incredibly expensive because of the 1986 ban). If you want to buy one made after 1986, you either need to be a law enforcement officer with a reason to have it or a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL).

Despite the hype, rifles killed fewer people than knives, blunt objects, and fists in the U.S. in 2016, according to FBI stats.

Furthermore, people who like to point out that MSRs are popular with shooters need to realize that that’s probably because MSRs are just popular in general. The design is light, low-recoil, and – because of its modular design – easily customizable. That means that no matter how your body is configured or what your specific needs are, you can typically find a way shoot comfortably. Those are features that all kinds of shooters, from target shooters to farmers and hunters, find useful.

But saying such features themselves somehow make it easier for evil people to shoot up innocents is like saying that a popular model of motor vehicle should be banned because the seat-warmers, adjustable steering column, and extra cup holders make it more popular among drunk drivers.

The fact that so many prominent anti-gun people think that the modern sporting rifle available to civilian purchasers today is a weapon that is used or even proposed for use in combat just shows how little they understand about guns. And if you’re going to try to ban something or criminalize people’s legally purchased property, you’d better at least have your facts straight about it.
