Panera Bread Exempt From California’s $20 Minimum Wage Law After Owner Donated to Gov. Newsom: Report

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law that exempts Panera Bread from a new $20-an-hour minimum wage hike for fast food chains after the billionaire owner of several of the chain’s locations donated to his campaign, according to a report.

In September, Newsom, a Democrat, signed into law a measure that raises the minimum wage of food fast workers from $16 an hour to $20 an hour.

But the Fast Food Accountability and Standards Recovery Act (FAST Act) includes an unusual carve-out that exempts “chains that bake bread and sell it as a standalone item,” according to Bloomberg News.

Newsom reportedly sought the exemption, which benefits among others Greg Flynn, the billionaire CEO of Flynn Restaurant Group, the company that owns some two dozen Panera Bread locations in the state.

School Cancels Contract With ‘Woke Kindergarten’ After Backlash

A school in California will no longer be using the services of a program called “Woke Kindergarten” following national backlash, a spokesperson for Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Glassbrook Elementary School spent $250,000 in federal funds designated for failing schools to pay for the service, which provides teachers with social justice-based training. HUSD canceled the contract on Monday and officials claimed that the controversy was “distracting the district,” Michael Bazeley, HUSD spokesperson, told the DCNF.

“The controversy over this program—including the widespread media attention, the mischaracterization of the Woke Kindergarten work, social media posts by the vendor, and the public response—is all distracting the district from doing the important work of supporting our students. We concluded that now was an appropriate time to terminate the contract,” Bazeley told the DCNF.

The “Woke Kindergarten” website provides “woke read alouds” in which the creator of the program, Akiea Gross, reads books about the importance “for all of us to affirm people’s identities.” Another section of the website is called “woke word of the day,” which introduces children to “liberatory vocabulary” such as “anti-racist,” “ceasefire,” and “abolish.”

Chinese-Born Engineer Arrested for Theft Involving Missile Sensor Technology

FBI agents in California arrested a suspected technology spy for China this week, charging him with stealing some 3,600 files from a defense contractor that includes sensitive information on advanced sensors used to detect missile launches.

Gong Chenguang, 57, of San Jose, was charged by federal prosecutors in Los Angeles with being part of China’s “talents” program, a systematic Beijing effort to obtain U.S. technology by recruiting American-based scientists and technical experts with access to advanced know-how.

An FBI affidavit used to seek an arrest warrant identifies Mr. Gong as a naturalized citizen employed by a Malibu defense contractor in January 2023.

The technology involved is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars” and, if provided to a foreign government, would “compromise U.S. national security,” the affidavit states. A spokeswoman identified the company as HRL Laboratories.

No Jail Time for Woman Who Killed Her Boyfriend After She Blames Weed

A California judge on Tuesday sentenced a woman to no prison time, only 100 hours of community service and probation, after she was convicted of killing her boyfriend by stabbing him 108 times.

Bryn Spejcher killed Chad O’Melia with a kitchen knife in May 2018. She also killed her dog, and was screaming and stabbing herself when police apprehended her.

The lawyer for the now 32-year old audiologist claimed she entered a “cannabis-induced psychosis” after smoking marijuana. He said she did not have a history of using the drug, but that she did so after feeling pressured by the 26-year old accountant to smoke out of his bong.

Ventura County prosecutors originally charged Spejcher with second-degree murder, but downgraded the charge to involuntary manslaughter after medical experts gave credence to the idea of a psychotic break triggered by the drug. . .

Ventura County Senior Deputy District Attorney Audry Nafziger, who tried the case, told The Daily Wire, “The sentence is a terrible miscarriage of justice. I can only hope it is not repeated by other judges. Because involuntary manslaughter and the use of a deadly weapon in California permits judicial discretion… the court was able to set her free with no jail. At least eight people were injured Thursday after a “rogue” wave crashed into the California coastline.

A series of videos shared on social media showed the moment a series of waves, one of which was particularly massive, swamped the shorelines of California just days after Christmas. At least eight people were hospitalized after one wave overwhelmed the promenade in Ventura, footage of which was shared by the Ventura County Fire Department.

A rogue wave is a large, unexpected, and dangerous type of swell, sometimes called “killer” or “monster waves,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The wave in Ventura, seen below from a different angle, led to beach closures throughout the area due to the destruction it caused.

California Retailers Must Have a Gender-Neutral Toys Section or Risk Being Fined

. . .Under Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA.) new bill, retailers in the state must create gender-neutral toy sections for children or risk being fined hundreds of dollars.

According to a law signed by Newsom in 2021, California-based department stores with 500 or more employees selling “childcare items or toys” must have a gender-neutral section “regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or boys.”

If retailers defy the law, they will get slapped with a $500 fine.

“Childcare items” include anything designed to help children under the age of 12 sleep, eat, relax, or to help them with sucking or teething.

California Biolab Owner Arrested with Alleged Ties to Chinese Military Organizations

The recently-arrested owner of a California biolab allegedly has ties to the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and a program related to its military, the House Select Committee on the CCP announced Wednesday.

Jia Bei Zhu, 62, allegedly served as a “corporate officer” within Chinese “military-civil fusion organizations,” according to materials shared by the Select Committee on the CCP. Zhu was arrested in October for “manufacturing and distributing misbranded medical devices in violation of the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) and for making false statements to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).”

“Zhu is a PRC citizen who served as a corporate officer on military-civil fusion organizations within the PRC and private organizations affiliated with or partially controlled by the PRC government,” the committee’s film stated.

Military-Civil Fusion (MCF) is a CCP “strategy to develop the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) into a ‘world class military’ by 2049,” according to the State Department. “The CCP’s MCF strategy allows a growing number of civilian enterprises and entities to undertake classified military R&D and weapons production.”

Media Outlets Tie Themselves in Knots To Avoid Saying Jewish Man Was Killed in Fight With Pro-Palestinian Protesters

A Jewish man was killed in California after a confrontation between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian rallygoers resulted in an altercation — but if the mainstream media reports are to be believed, he might have just died after falling on the sidewalk and hitting his head.

Paul Kessler, 69, hit his head on the pavement as a result of the altercation and later died of his injuries at a nearby hospital.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department reported: “Upon arrival, responding deputies located Kessler, who was suffering from a head injury. Witness accounts indicated that Kessler was involved in a physical altercation with counter-protestor(s). During the altercation, Kessler fell backwards and struck his head on the ground. Kessler was transported to an area hospital for advanced medical treatment. On November 6, 2023, Kessler succumbed to his injuries.”

The Sheriff’s office said in a press conference on Tuesday that officers detained a 50-year-old suspect who was “advocating for Palestine” during his confrontation with Kessler. The Sheriff’s Department later released the suspect after authorities conducted a search warrant at his home. The medical examiner’s office ruled the cause of death to be homicide, and authorities have “not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime” charge.

Still, media was rife with headlines that left out the fact that he was involved in a “physical altercation” with pro-Palestinian protesters when he hit his head.

California City the First in U.S. To Condemn Israel, Accuse Jewish State of ‘Ethnic Cleansing’ in Gaza

A California city has become the first in the US to pass a resolution condemning Israel — accusing the Jewish nation of committing “ethnic cleansing and collective punishment.”

The resolution passed by the Richmond City Council around 1 a.m. Wednesday states, in part, that Palestinians in Gaza “are currently facing a campaign of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment by the state of Israel.”

That “is considered a war crime under international law,” the resolution states.

It also calls for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the safe passage of substantial humanitarian aid to Gaza,” as well as an “end to Israeli apartheid and the occupation and blockade of Palestinian land by Israeli military forces.”

Longest Serving Female Senator Dead at 90

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California has died at age 90, her office confirmed Friday.

Feinstein, a Democrat, was the oldest member of the Senate, where she had served since 1992. She held her seat in the chamber longer than any other woman and any other senator from California.

She passed away Thursday night at her home in Washington, D.C. . .

But in Feinstein’s final years, she had increasingly visible health and memory issues, and as a result of those a conflict with fellow Democrats over her refusal to step down. (Read more from “Longest Serving Female Senator Dead at 90” HERE)
