CDC Warns of ‘Healthy’ Food Outbreaks

Ironically, all of the CDC’s outbreak warnings on its homepage are currently for items on the so-called “healthy” foods list.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is warning of five potentially fatal, multi-state outbreaks – all victimizing people who eat foods typically considered healthful:

Alfalfa Sprouts (two outbreaks),

Organic Shake and Meal Products,

Packaged Salads, and

Cucumbers

Nine people in either Minnesota or Wisconsin who ate alfalfa sprouts have been diagnosed with the outbreak strain of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 (STEC O157), which can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially-fatal type of kidney failure. The CDC has linked the infections to sprouts produced by Jack & the Green Spouts . . .

Fans of organic shakes and meals are being warned to avoid those products sold by RAW Organic Shakes & Meal products made by Garden of Life, LLC (CDC’s “likely” suspect). Eighteen cases of Salmonella Virchow from 15 states have been reported as of Feb. 17, 2016. The suspected products, sold nationally, have been voluntarily recalled. CDC: Antibiotic-Resistant Shigella Spreading, Here Are The High-Risk Groups, How You Catch It

It is late on a Sunday night and your son is clutching his stomach complaining of pain. He feels warm so you test his temperature and he definitely has a fever. He says he needs to use the bathroom and you are shocked to see that he has passed bloody diarrhea. You rush him to the emergency room in hopes that whatever he has is easily treated. A few days later you discover that your son actually has an antibiotic-resistant Shigella and that one of the few treatments available is not only more expensive but also more harmful than the antibiotics formerly used while not being as effective. You wonder how in the world your son contracted this disease which is spread through fecal matter. Could it have been at the party for new international students you attended on Friday night? Undoubtedly it would have been at that party. If you had only known of this bacterial infection common to the developing world then you could have taken steps to prevent it in your son.

The problem is that there are are some misconceptions regarding certain diseases in the U.S and where they are likely to originate. The CDC usually does a pretty good job looking at disease outbreaks and relaying to the public information by which they can protect themselves. However, unless the public is regularly checking the CDC website for themselves, they may not be aware of current disease outbreaks as the popular news websites don’t regularly post those type of stories. Sometimes these sites direct the information only to the segment of the population that they believe is affected. People who are not related to that specific segment of the population may be harmed by not getting the information they need to protect themselves and their families.

A good example of this is the recent outbreak of drug resistant Shigella that made news when it affected Kansas City. With a little research one can find that it has been affecting parts of the United States since May 2014. By February 2015 it had already been found in 32 states. By April the CDC decided it was important to let the public know how the outbreak started and how people could protect themselves. According, to their research about 50 percent of the cases originated in the homeless population and the other cases originated with international travelers. This multi-drug resistant Shigella has specifically been traced back to mostly international travellers from India and Dominican Republic. This information is not surprising once one looks at the rate of Shigella in those areas. They are both developing areas which do not have modern sewage systems.

It is also interesting that the CDC acknowledges that in the US the main outbreaks are occurring among child care facilities, gay men, and the homeless. At this same time some major news sources are mainly discussing Shigella spreading among children in child care settings. They are ignoring the fact that Shigella is also spread by international travelers, gay/bisexual men and the homeless. This is something that the general population should be aware of!

What should we learn from this information? First, this means that people traveling to developing countries should follow the advice from the CDC on how to avoid contracting Shigella. Second, residents of the US should be cautious of those immediately returning or coming from developing countries because the traveler could be infected with Shigella. The incubation period is about two days but a person may still infect others long after they are no longer showing signs of sickness. This is one reason Shigella is so contagious and at times difficult to contain.

This subject is important to me personally because I am related to one of the at risk groups by being married to a man from a developing country. When we travel internationally we are always aware of what we should be doing to protect ourselves from various diseases. However, we know that not everyone who travels internationally is as conscientious as we are. I am aware of this because many of my international friends travel back to the country of their origin, then spent part of their vacation sick from things as Shigella. They thought that since the country was their childhood home, they did not have to take the same precautions (drinking bottled water, not eating salads/fruit) that other travelers needed to take.

The media must be more diligent in informing the public concerning the entire risks of disease epidemics so that the populace can help stem the spread of infections and stop the outbreak.

The Obama Administration Proposed $72 Million In CDC Cuts Back In 2012

Photo Credit: TownHall“Republican cuts kill;” that’s an ad run by the Agenda Project Action Fund. Of all the things in the world, liberals have decided to politicize a deadly, incurable infectious disease to attack Republicans. Guy and Katie have written about the absurdity of this claim; even the Washington Post gave it four pinocchios:

This ad is simply a more extreme version of a new Democratic talking point — that GOP budget cuts have harmed the nation’s ability to handle the Ebola outbreak. It mixes statistics — the budget for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “cut” $585 million (the ad offers no date range) — with disturbing images of the outbreak and various Republican leaders saying variations of the word “cut.”

On many levels, this line of attack is absurd.

Obama’s Republican predecessor oversaw big increases in public-health sector spending, and both Democrats and Republicans in recent years have broadly supported efforts to rein in federal spending. Sequestration resulted from a bipartisan agreement. In some years, Congress has allocated more money for NIH and CDC than the Obama administration requested. Meanwhile, contrary to the suggestion of the DCCC ad, there never was a specific vote on funding to prevent Ebola.

Beyond Bizarre! CDC Has a Zombie Apocalypse Training Manual

Photo Credit: CDCYou simply cannot make this stuff up. The accompanying photo is the cover page for a CDC publication called “Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic.” No doubt they thought they were being clever and creative, two words that are anathema to government bureaucrats. But yes, the CDC has a training manual using a “Zombie Pandemic” scenario. You know, because things like an Ebola pandemic are just too farfetched. Regardless. The guidance is the same. CDC recommends that:

*People distance themselves from anyone displaying symptoms
*Gather emergency supplies
*Make plans in case you are asked to evacuate
*Print out CDC’s Emergency Preparedness Kit

Wait a minute… something is wrong here. It’s not the same. Some of this actually makes sense. I mean, a preparedness kit, emergency supplies? Basic, but at least you can’t go wrong with it. Unlike what CDC has told us they think is best to “prepare” for Ebola, such as:

*Don’t restrict flights from affected nations
*Don’t restrict travel to affected nations
*Provide minimal, ineffective screening of passengers
*Send the 101st Airborne Division to Liberia to bag bodies
*On second thought, add the National Guard, just for good measure
*Don’t quarantine the Ebola-ravaged population, no, but we may have to quarantine U.S. troops!
*Don’t don heavy protective gear. All you need is some good gloves.
*Don’t restrict travel of exposed healthcare workers, let them travel with elevated temperature.

The thought of squandering the 101st Airborne, about 3,000 other soldiers, plus the Guard, is not merely insane, it is criminally negligent. These troops are not nurses or grave diggers! They have been fighting a battle rigged to lose thanks to Obama’s military “strategy.” And now to add insult to injury, Obama is putting them and the rest of the military, and by extension their families and our entire country at further direct risk of contracting and importing the disease.

CDC: Making Subsidized Housing Smoke-Free Could Save $500M Yearly

Photo Credit: APThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that almost $500 million could be saved a year if smoking was banned in subsidized housing.

In a press release on its website, the CDC said an estimated $497 million in health care and housing-related costs could be saved if smoking was prohibited in all government subsidized housing, including public housing.

The study is considered to be the first of its kind to estimate the annual cost savings of banning smoking in subsidized housing in each state.

Almost 80 million Americans live in multi-unit housing, of which nearly 7 million multi-unit housing residents live in government subsidized housing, including 2 million in public housing.

Residents in these units are susceptible to second-hand smoke that gets into the ventilation systems and windows and spreads into units where non-smokers live. This is of particular concern among children, the elderly, and the disabled.

CDC Warning: Immigrant Children Could Be Spreading This New Mystery Virus In Public Schools

Photo Credit: Western Center for JournalismThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning yesterday about a mysterious polio-like virus that’s causing acute neurological illness and paralysis in children. The virus seems to be related to the nationwide epidemic of EV-D68 that we reported on during the first weeks of the outbreak.

The CDC is investigating nine cases of muscle weakness or paralysis in Colorado children to see if enterovirus 68 (EV-D68) might be the virus responsible for the neurological symptoms.

On Friday, The CDC issued a Health Advisory to doctors about the polio-like cases in Colorado, and said EV-D68 was detected in four of the eight sick children who were tested for the virus.

The CDC says the mysterious illness is characterized by “focal limb weakness and abnormalities of the spinal cord gray matter on MRI.” The cases, which are just now being made public, occurred between August 9 – September 17 among children aged 1-18 years old (with a median age of 10 years-old).

The nine children who have been confirmed to have this neurological illness all had fever and respiratory illness about two weeks before developing varying degrees of limb weakness. Health officials don’t think it’s polio because eight of the nine children are up to date on their polio vaccinations.

Ebola Victim was Originally SENT HOME from Hospital with Antibiotics Before the Deadly Virus was Diagnosed

Photo Credit: APBy AP and Zoe Szathmary.

A Dallas hospital gave a man antibiotics and sent him home – only for him to be admitted two days later, it has been reported. Federal health officials later confirmed he has the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the US.

The unidentified patient has been in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital since Sunday, officials said.

‘#Dallas patient diagnosed with #Ebola was initially dismissed with prescription for antibiotics,’ CBS DFW tweeted.

Medical officials said the patient would not be given the experimental treatment ZMapp because there is none of it left.

The man recently traveled from Liberia to Dallas.

Photo Credit: ReutersCDC Confirms First Case of Ebola in US

By Jessica Mulvihill.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on Tuesday that a patient being treated at a Dallas hospital has tested positive for Ebola, the first case diagnosed in the United States.

The patient left Liberia on September 19 and arrived in the United States on September 20, CDC director, Dr. Tom Frieden told reporters at a press conference Tuesday. It’s the first patient to be diagnosed with this particular strain of Ebola outside of Africa.

“[The patient] had no symptoms when departing Liberia or entering this country. But four or five days later on the 24th of September, he began to develop symptoms,” said Frieden.

The patient, who was in the U.S. visiting family in Texas, initially sought care on September 26, but was sent home and was not admitted until two days later. He was placed in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, where he remains critically ill, according to Frieden.

“The next steps are basically threefold,” said Frieden. “First, to care for the patient … to provide the most effective care possible as safely as possible to keep to an absolute minimum the likelihood or possibility that anyone would become affected, and second, to maximize the chances that the patient might recover,” said Frieden.

Chris Matthews vs. Ezekiel Emanuel on Ebola: “Obama Said It Was Unlikely. It Has Happened. It’s Here”

By Ian Schwartz.

On MSNBC’s Hardball tonight, host Chris Matthews tussled with Obamacare architect Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel over the how serious a threat Ebola is to Americans. Matthews and Emanuel also spar over President Obama saying it was “unlikely” that an Ebola case would strike the U.S.

“Obama said it was unlikely. It has happened. It’s here,” Matthews said.

Dr. Emanuel said there is some “fear mongering” going on here, but Matthews said he was just quoting the president and stating facts. Here’s a bit of the argument that lasted nearly ten minutes:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: I’m just trying to follow the logic here. Everybody’s being told, don’t worry unless they have the infectious symptoms, you can see them, that you don’t have to worry about catching them. Yet, this guy picked up the disease apparently from somebody who did not have the infectious symptoms.

Photo Credit: CELLOU BINANI / AFP / Getty American Ebola Survivor: Outbreak is ‘A Fire Straight From the Pit of Hell’

By Sophie Novack.

Ebola survivor Kent Brantly said it’s “time to think outside the box” for ways to combat the virus’s worst outbreak in history, which continues to ravage West Africa.

The physician was treating Ebola patients in Liberia when he tested positive for the disease on July 26. He is one of four American aid workers flown back to the United States for treatment.

In a hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Tuesday, Brantly implored the international community to ramp up relief efforts, calling on the U.S. to lead the efforts. His testimony came on the same day President Obama announced a new stepped-up strategy for U.S. efforts to combat the epidemic.

Obama said Tuesday that 3,000 U.S. military personnel will be dispatched to help battle the Ebola crisis that is raging in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. The president explained his plan from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Obama and Brantly met in the Oval Office ahead of the announcement Tuesday.

Duck Patriarch: Man-Man Sex ‘Not Logical’; CDC Data Concurs: ‘Highest Risk Sexual Behavior’

By Michael W. Chapman.

Although some liberal observers criticized Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson’s remarks about homosexual behavior as “disgusting” and “vile and extreme stereotypes,” the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one of the federal government’s leading health voices, uses nearly identical and even more graphic language in describing some of the sexual practices of male homosexuals.

“Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) represent approximately 2% of the United States population, yet they are the population most severely affected by HIV,” says the CDC. “Most HIV infections in men are transmitted through sexual contact, especially anal sex.”

In an interview with GQ magazine, which sparked a national controversy and his indefinite suspension from the hugely popular A&E reality-TV show, “Duck Dynasty,” head-of-household Phil Robertson, a self-described Bible-thumping Christian said, “It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

Robertson was also asked in the interview, “What in your mind, is sinful?” and he said, “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.” Robertson then paraphrased Corinthians (I,6:9-10), “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Shortly after those comments were leaked from the interview, the pro-homosexual activist group GLAAD issued a statement on Dec. 18. GLAAD said that GQ’s profile of Robertson “included some of the vilest and most extreme statements uttered against LGBT people in a mainstream publication. His quote was littered with outdated stereotypes and blatant misinformation.”

Sponsor sends a message with statement on Phil Robertson, ‘Duck Dynasty’ Controversy

By Jason Howerton.

Realtree, a hunting and outdoors company, released a statement Monday reaffirming its partnership with the Duck Commander team, including Phil Robertson. The company also made it clear that they support “everyone’s right to their opinion” and made no attempt to apologize or clarify for Robertson.

“Realtree’s partnership with Phil Robertson and the Duck Commander team has remained strong for nearly a decade. Our plan is to continue that partnership,” the statement reads. “As a company, our values align well with the Robertson’s. Realtree’s “Family, Friends and the Outdoors” slogan is one we take to heart. We support everyone’s right to their opinion, and we certainly support Phil’s right to his.”

The statement comes as other companies contemplate their relationship with the “Duck Dynasty” crew.

‘Duck Dynasty’ Star’s Firing Proves You Will be Made to Care

By Steve Deace.

A nation founded by pilgrims seeking out religious freedom, and the chance to worship the God of the Bible without interference from big government or persecution from the culture, has now come full circle.

In August, Duck Dynasty returned for another season with a record 12 million viewers, which was the largest audience for an original show in the history of cable television.

Four months later one of its stars, Phil Robertson, was essentially fired today by A&E Network which carries the show because he’s a Christian that believes the Bible. And the Bible teaches homosexuality is a sin and goes against God’s plan for His creation.

You will be made to care.

When a network fires arguably its biggest star for believing the Bible, and expressing those views in a way that was not inflammatory or incendiary, it’s essentially saying it would rather bow at the altar of political correctness than make a profit. Duck Dynasty has become A&E’s biggest cash cow. If Duck Dynasty and all the wealth, jobs, and prosperity its success provides cannot trump the homosexual agenda, then nothing can. Pop culture is essentially choosing the promotion of sexual deviancy even over its own greed. The truth is many companies in corporate America have been doing the same for years now, and so does most of the media as well. The tolerance mob and its gaystapo are out to silence all opposition to their brave new world of deviancy.

You will be made to care.

CDC Says 50% of Americans Will be Mentally Ill; No Wonder Gun Control Advocates Want Mental Illness Ban

CDC: ‘Nearly 50% of U.S. Adults Will Develop at Least One Mental Illness’

By Taylor Knopf. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention says that at any given moment about a quarter of American adults are mentally ill and that over the course of their lifetimes about half of all Americans will develop at least one mental illness.

A CDC mental-health fact sheet–Mental Illness Surveillance Among U.S. Adults–says that “published studies report that about 25% of all U.S. adults have a mental illness and that nearly 50% of U.S. adults will develop at least one mental illness during their lifetime.”

The fact sheet also notes that the authors of a 2011 CDC mental health surveillance report pointed out that “currently, no surveillance efforts at the national or state level are directed toward documenting anxiety disorders.” The authors thus call for “initiating national-level anxiety disorder surveillance activities.”

Mental illness, says the CDC, “refers collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders” and that “the most common mental illnesses in adults are anxiety and mood disorders.” Mental illnesses effects “include sustained abnormal alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior associated with distress and impaired functioning.”

In addition, says the agency, “mental illness is associated with increased occurrence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, asthma, epilepsy, and cancer.” Read more from this story HERE.

The Brilliant Gun Confiscation Trap

By Eddie Zingone. It is so simple and will be so effective it is simply nuts! I am referring to the trap that is being carefully laid by liberals to confiscate the guns of a significant number of law abiding Americans. It would be crazy to try and push their full agenda at once, so they do what liberals are much better at doing than conservatives: they will take it one step at a time and slowly tighten the noose.

Here’s how it will work: it seems to be common sense that no one wants the mentally ill to have access to firearms. After all, the shooters from Columbine to Aurora to Sandy Hook were mentally ill (at least judging by the fruit of their actions). Most of us would probably agree that no one wants individuals like that to be armed. Thus lies the rationale to clamp down on background checks and create a national ‘database’ to filter these individuals out. Read more from this story HERE.

CDC: 110,197,000 Venereal Infections In US; Nation Creating New STIs Faster Than Jobs, College Diplomas

According to new data released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 19.7 million new venereal infections in the United States in 2008, bringing the total number of existing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the U.S. at that time to 110,197,000.

The 19.7 million new STIs in 2008 vastly outpaced the new jobs and college graduates created in the United States that year or any other year on record, according to government data. The competition was not close.

The STI study referenced by the CDC estimated that 50 percent of the new infections in 2008 occurred among people in the 15-to-24 age bracket. In fact, of the 19,738,800 total new STIs in the United States in 2008, 9,782,650 were among Americans in the 15-to-24 age bracket.

By contrast, there were 1,524,092 bachelor’s degrees awarded in the United States in the 2007-2008 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. That means the total number of new STIs in 2008 outpaced the total number of new bachelor’s degrees by nearly 13 to 1, and the number of new STIs among Americans in the 15-to-24 age bracket outnumbered new bachelor’s degrees by more than 6 to 1.

While the CDC estimates that there were 19.7 million new STIs in the United States in 2008, data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that the total number of people employed in the country actually declined by 2.9 million during that year.
