Hope, Family, Warm Traditions, and Our Redeemer: The Meaning of Christmas in Our Hardest Years

. . .The bright lights, smells, and smiles discernible even to an infant quickly grow into a sense of hope, awe, and mystery as young boys and girls crane their necks on the car ride back from papa’s house to look out the window for a sign of that bright red nose in the sky. As time moves on, our hopes turn to the company of friends and family, and our awe to the sacred mysteries of God made man for our sake.

Our experience of Christmas changes as we grow older. While the fortunate ones spent childhood ignorant of the troubles between men and maybe even their own families, over the years our broken world comes into focus, and hopefully we come to understand that Christ came among us not to sing carols, but because we have gone astray.

This year has been America’s worst in a long while. We’ve seen our churches boarded up by those who think God merely a hobby. Our elderly have died alone under the orders of those who think it’s better for their health this way. Our livelihoods have been shattered, and even that fleeting innocence of childhood has been taken from masked boys and girls not allowed to go to school or play on public swings. . .

This year was a hard one. Many of my friends suffered more hardship than I, although loneliness and anger stalked us all. And since the moment Halloween ended and All Saints Day dawned, I’ve been excited for Christmas with what feels like the hope of a young child. Christmas, and all the traditions it welcomes. . .

Although for many there might be less under the tree or fewer at our table, our faith in God remains strong. And the songs, traditions, and tales passed down from those who celebrated Christmases past in trenches, basement shelters, empty homes, and sometimes without even a home, just as the Holy Family, can keep us warm wherever we find ourselves. Police Fatally Shoot Man Breaking COVID-19 Regulations, Protests Erupt

Hundreds of protesters set a Christmas tree on fire and knocked over other seasonal decorations in demonstrations Wednesday night after police fatally shot a man for not adhering to a COVID-19 curfew in Albania, Politico reported Thursday.

Protests started in Tirana, Albania, on Wednesday where protesters reportedly threw rocks at government buildings and flares at law enforcement officials before they were teargassed, according to Politico. Two protesters and 16 officers sustained injuries, and one officer was in serious condition.

Protesters demanded Prime Minister Edi Rama and Interior Minister Sandër Lleshaj’s resignations, Politico reported. The officer who shot the man has been arrested. . .

Police shot a 25-year-old man when he didn’t stop after officers approached him for breaking curfew on Tuesday, Politico reported. Boy Cries After Mall Santa Tells Him No Nerf Guns for Christmas

. . .In all seriousness, it takes a lot to screw up as a mall Santa. It’s not the most pleasant work, you need to have a lot of patience, but making a kid cry because you want to peddle some Moms Demand gun control nonsense is a special kind of idiocy. What are you doing, Saint Nick? If you’re going to do this, at least take a page from Billy Bob Thornton’s book and be drunk, vulgar, and a total degenerate. Yeah, in Illinois, some boy wanted a Nerf gun for Christmas. This idiot Santa said no (via The Hill):

A mall in Chicago has apologized and delivered a surprise to a young boy who was told by a mall Santa Claus that he could not have a toy gun for Christmas.

Video posted by the boy’s mother on Facebook shows Michael asking a Santa at the Harlem Irving Plaza Mall for a nerf gun.

“No, I … nope. No guns,” the Santa replied. “Not even a Nerf gun. If your dad wants to bring it to you that’s fine, but I can’t bring it to you. What else would you like?”

The boy eventually breaks into tears.

Kansas School Stops Collecting Toys for Kids After Atheist Group’s Legal Threats

A Kansas middle school ended its participation in a Christmas toy donation program after an anti-Christian, out-of-state group threatened it with a lawsuit.

The Christian Post reported the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), based in Madison, Wisconsin, sent a letter to Tony Helfrich, superintendent of the Pratt Unified School District 382, demanding it stop participating in a program managed by Samaritan’s Purse in which students collect toys, toiletries, and other items in shoe boxes to be donated to impoverished children.

Liberty Middle School must “cease participation in Operation Christmas Child or taking any other actions promoting Christianity like including religious references over morning announcements,” the FFRF letter demanded, which cited an anonymous “concerned staff member.”

The anti-Christian group claimed there are “multiple constitutional violations” occurring within the school district. The group cited an allegation that a staff member communicated “their personal religious beliefs” to a student in an email.

According to the Christian Post, Helfrich responded to the threat by caving in. (Read more from “Kansas School Stops Collecting Toys for Kids After Atheist Group’s Legal Threats” HERE)

Republican Congressman Posts Video for Holidays of Hillary Clinton Getting Hit by Light Fixture

Representative Paul Gosar marked Christmas Eve by sharing a clip of a light falling on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from 27 years ago. . .

In 1992, when Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas, Hillary joined him on 60 Minutes, her first interview on the show, to discuss his run for president and accusations he had an affair. About 40 minutes into the interview, a light bar that was set up for the interview crashed onto the back of the couch where Bill and Hillary were sitting.

As the Clintons jumped off the couch and away from the fallen light, Hillary exclaimed, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph.” Given the Biblical names she used and their importance at Christmas time, it’s possible that’s what Gosar meant by “remember the reason for the season.” . . .

People on social media didn’t take kindly to him sharing the clip, and some Twitter users said they reported it for promoting violence against the former secretary of state. Others, including Neera Tanden, the president of the Center for American Progress, claimed the representative’s behavior was one of the reasons his family made an ad encouraging voters to support his opponent.

‘We’re Blessed to Have Them’: More Than 200,000 Troops Will Spend Christmas Away From Home This Year

By Washington Examiner. Each year at Christmas, a soldier’s version of a beloved children’s poem circulates on military social media groups. In The Soldier’s Night Before Christmas, Santa drops in on an American soldier curled up alone on a poncho in some far flung locale. The soldier is spending Christmas deployed without his family.

This year, Santa might have similar encounters with other American forces – not all on ponchos, but definitely far from home. Some 214,277 service members are serving around the world this year, including as many as 18,700 in combat zones in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

American troops also are in Africa, South Korea, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and other land bases, and aboard ships in oceans around the globe. . .

While Iraq and Afghanistan deployments are not as common as they were in years past, troops are still putting their lives on the line. The death of Sgt. 1st Class Michael James Goble in Afghanistan on Monday is a stark reminder of that, Heritage Foundation foreign policy analyst James Carafano told the Washington Examiner.

“The loss of every American life is tragic, particularly this time of year. It just reminds us that, not just in Afghanistan, we have men and women around the world every day, not just on Christmas, that put their life in harm’s way for our interests, and we’re really blessed to have them,” said Carafano, an Army veteran. Operation Holiday Express Brings Gifts to U.S. Troops in Syria

By The Associated Press. Hundreds of American troops based in Syria have received Christmas gifts thanks to Operation Holiday Express, launched by U.S.-led coalition forces from across the border in neighboring Iraq.

This year, Santa’s sleigh and reindeer were apparently swapped for a workhorse CH-47 Chinook helicopter. But coalition forces still donned jolly red caps as they unloaded boxes of gifts at five locations in eastern Syria, as seen by The Associated Press on Monday.

In addition to the presents, Christmas tunes were provided by a military band from the 1st Infantry Division, flown in from Fort Riley, Kansas. The soldiers received stockings stuffed with candies, toiletries and other gifts. Most were donated by military support organizations in the U.S., as well as churches and charity organizations, coalition spokesman Col. Myles Caggins said. Author Explains How God Used Ordinary People to Bring Jesus to the World

. . .Daniel Darling, author of “The Characters of Christmas: The Unlikely People Caught Up in the Story of Jesus” recently told “The Pure Flix Podcast” why he finds the story of Jesus’ birth so incredible.

“When we think about the Christmas story you think about all those people around the Nativities that are in our homes [and Christmas plays],” he said. “These were ordinary people in the first century who were swept up in the story of God sending his son to Earth.”

So, Darling set out on a mission to tell these peoples’ stories, noting that each of the biblical figures involved in Christ’s birth helps show the “kind of people” who make up God’s kingdom.

“The Characters of Christmas” is filled with ordinary stories of people who were enveloped into the greatest story ever told.

“Outsiders like the Magi who follow the star, follow the spirit … [are] the kind of people who make up this story,” Darling said. (Read more from “Author Explains How God Used Ordinary People to Bring Jesus to the World” HERE)

Church to Give $5 Million to Families Struggling With Medical Debt

Christian Assembly Church in Eagle Rock, California, will be giving struggling families the greatest gift this Christmas: Canceling over $5.3 million in medical debt.

According to Good Morning America, Christian Assembly partnered with the non-profit RIP Medical Debt to bring $5.3 million in aid to families crushed by the weight of medical bills. . .

In a video released online, co-pastor Tom Hughes said the gift will have “no strings attached,” noting that 75% of people struggling with medical debt went bankrupt despite having health insurance.

“For many people in our communities, medical debt is a crushing weight during a most challenging time in their life,” said Tom Hughes. “Medical debt is one of the leading causes of personal bankruptcy and contributes significantly to the likelihood of a person experiencing homelessness.” . . .

“We mapped out all of the active households that call Christian Assembly Church home, and we chose the top 28 neighborhoods. This gift is really impacting the poor in the 28 neighborhoods where we live,” said Hughes. “Because of the generosity of the people of Christian Assembly Church, we are able to make this gift possible. All of this is being done in Jesus’ name because of the generosity of our God and the compassion and mercy He has shown us.” (Read more from “Church to Give $5 Million to Families Struggling With Medical Debt” HERE)
