Here’s What We Still Don’t Know After Release of Redacted FBI Trump Raid Affidavit

Friday’s unsealing of the affidavit tied to the FBI’s raid on former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate has raised more questions than answers.

West Palm Beach US Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhardt had ordered the Justice Department earlier in the week to prepare a redacted version of the document in which authorities laid out their reasons for the controversial Aug. 8 search-and-seizure operation at Mar-a-Lago. . .

Reports have said an informant tipped off authorities about official documents that remained in Trump’s possession even though they were supposed to have been turned over to the National Archives and Records Administration when he left office last year. . .

The blacked-out-affidavit doesn’t provide any new details about the 11 sets of classified records seized during the raid, but it alleges that 14 of the 15 boxes of records recovered from Trump’s West Palm Beach mansion earlier this year contained classified documents. . .

The blacked-out affidavit doesn’t reveal the targets or subjects of the Justice Department probe, but anyone who allegedly moved or hid classified records could face prosecution, according to USA Today. FBI Agents Behind Controversial Hunter Biden Briefing Ordered to Talk

The senators said they had repeatedly raised the issue with FBI Director Christopher Wray. The request comes after whistleblower disclosures claimed the bureau improperly labeled evidence on Hunter Biden “disinformation” around the same time as the briefing.

The two Republicans said the briefing itself “consisted primarily of information that we already knew and information unconnected to our Biden investigation” and that “we made clear to you at the briefing that it was not relevant to the substance of our work.” The senators quoted the FBI as saying at the time that it was not attempting to “quash, curtail, or interfere” in their Biden family investigation.

“We also made clear our concern that the briefing would be subject to a leak that would shed a false light on the focus of our investigation,” Grassley and Johnson said, pointing to a Washington Post story that they said “did exactly that.”

Grassley and Johnson said Thursday that they have repeatedly requested “relevant records relating to what happened at the briefing, including the 302 or similar summary, the intelligence basis for the briefing and the personnel involved in making the decision to brief us,” but that the FBI has “consistently failed to respond in full to each request and failed to provide those critical records which casts further doubt on the true purpose for the briefing.” (Read more from “FBI Agents Behind Controversial Hunter Biden Briefing Ordered to Talk” HERE)

Plurality of Independents Don’t Trust DOJ or FBI

Anew poll out Wednesday shows a plurality of independents have lost faith in federal law enforcement two weeks after FBI agents raided former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.

According to a survey from the Trafalgar Group and Convention of States Action shared exclusively with The Federalist, nearly 48 percent of independent respondents said the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI “are too political, corrupt, and not to be trusted.” Less than 44 percent said otherwise.

Republicans were most distrusting of the federal law enforcement agencies with more than 68 percent identifying the FBI and DOJ as corrupt compared to nearly 25 percent who said “they are to be respected for their pursuit of justice and law and order.”

More than 73 percent of Democrats, on the other hand, reported trust in the FBI and DOJ while nearly 20 percent said the agencies were “corrupt.” (Read more from “Plurality of Independents Don’t Trust DOJ or FBI” HERE)

‘In a Body Bag’: GOP Candidate Says He’d Kill FBI Agents if They Tried to Search Home; Republicans Call For Releasing Affidavit Authorizing Mar-a-Lago Raid (VIDEO)

By Yahoo Sports. A Sarasota candidate for Congress says he would have killed the FBI agents who searched former President Donald Trump’s property if they tried to do the same thing to his home.

“I wish they’d turn up at my home ’cause they’d have gone home in a body bag,” Sarasota businessman Martin Hyde says in a new video.

Hyde is a Republican running for Congress against U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Longboat Key. He has been a magnet for controversy, with his campaign imploding after he was caught on camera in February berating a Sarasota police officer and threatening her job during a traffic stop.

It appeared Hyde might drop out of the race, but he paid the qualifying fee and has remained a candidate. His campaign hasn’t attracted much attention since then until now, when Hyde put out the inflammatory video in the closing stretch of the Aug. 23 primary. . .

“When they turned up at Mar-a-Lago and raided the home of President Trump, that was an assault on every one of the 75 million people who voted for Donald Trump, it was a assault on democracy,” Hyde says as the video shows images of police officers, Mar-a-Lago and Trump supporters. “These people would stop at nothing. I wish they’d turn up at my home ’cause they’d have gone home in a body bag.”

House Republicans Call For Releasing Affidavit Authorizing Mar-a-Lago Raid

By New York Post. The top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee on Sunday said the affidavit authorizing the FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Florida home should be released in the interest of transparency — as a GOP colleague said the search warrants heightened scrutiny.

Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio, the ranking Republican on the Intelligence panel, said the court document would provide information “to understand how did the FBI justify raiding Mar-a-Lago.”

“Certainly, the American public wants to make certain this is not an abuse of discretion,” Turner said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.”

Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas, meanwhile, said the execution of the search warrant Aug. 8 on Trump’s members-only resort in Palm Beach “is a very unprecedented measure” that needs to be looked at more closely.

“When you’re going after an ex-president who may run again — this is automatically political,” Crenshaw said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” (Read more from “House Republicans Call For Releasing Affidavit Authorizing Mar-a-Lago Raid” HERE)

Man Acquitted in Gretchen Whitmer Kidnapping Plot Speaks Out

A man acquitted in April regarding a plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) spoke out Friday after both sides rested their case in the retrial of two men charged in the conspiracy.

Brandon Caserta, a former member of the Wolverine Watchmen, said if it wasn’t for the fact that the government was involved in the alleged conspiracy, no one would be charged.

“People say things that are offensive and, you know, may sound violent but there’s a difference between actually physically doing violence or just being around a group of people and talking crap,” Caserta said, according to Local 4. “If the government wasn’t involved in this situation it would have never gotten to where it is now.”

Caserta, who has posted videos with anti-government rhetoric that he claims is “all talk,” invoked the Fifth Amendment in the retrial of Barry Croft Jr. and Adam Fox. A federal judge ordered a retrial for the men after a jury failed to reach a verdict during their first trial in April. Caserta and another member of the watchmen were found “not guilty” on all charges last spring. (Read more from “Man Acquitted in Gretchen Whitmer Kidnapping Plot Speaks Out” HERE)

Trump Raid Judge’s Order Helps DOJ Drag Out Political Persecution of Its Biggest Foe

The affidavit used to obtain a warrant to search former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home will be unsealed, and the Department of Justice must justify every redaction it seeks to make to the material, Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart ruled yesterday. While Thursday’s decision represents a victory for the media outlets seeking access to the documents, whether the public sees anything of substance in the short term remains to be seen.

Following the unprecedented raid on the former president and de facto leader of the Republican Party, the Department of Justice agreed to release the search warrant and the accompanying attachments that described the places to be searched and identified the items to be seized. The government also filed an unsealed, but redacted, copy of the property receipt list, and yesterday, with the government’s agreement, the court unsealed the criminal cover sheet, the government’s motion to seal the search warrant, and the court’s order sealing the warrant and related materials.

The Department of Justice, however, refused to unseal the search warrant affidavit used to obtain the search warrant, even as multiple media outlets argued in motions that they had a First Amendment right to access that material. Thursday afternoon, Reinhart heard oral argument on the consolidated motions and quickly made clear he believed some portions of the affidavit needed to be unsealed.

“On my initial careful review … there are portions of it that can be unsealed,” Reinhart told the attorneys. Then, following arguments, the court issued an order finding “that on the present record the Government has not met its burden of showing that the entire affidavit should remain sealed.” The court further directed the government to file under seal, by Thursday, August 25, 2022, “its proposed redactions along with a legal memorandum setting forth the justification for the proposed redactions.” (Read more from “Trump Raid Judge’s Order Helps DOJ Drag Out Political Persecution of Its Biggest Foe” HERE)

Is Mike Pence Taking the FBI’s Side Over Trump’s?

Former Vice President Mike Pence called out members of the Republican Party for going after the FBI following the raid of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.

Criticizing his own party, Pence told the GOP to stop attacking rank-and-file FBI personnel.

“I also want to remind my fellow Republicans we can hold the attorney general accountable for the decision that he made without attacking the rank-and-file law enforcement personnel at the FBI,” Pence said during a speech in New Hampshire.

Pence, who has publicly spoken against Trump, is taking yet another aim at his former partner by seemingly taking the FBI’s side.

“It is fairly well-known that President Trump and I had our differences… Our party stands with the men and women who stand on the thin blue line at the federal, state, and local levels. These attacks on the FBI must stop,” Pence continued to say. (Read more from “Is Mike Pence Taking the FBI’s Side Over Trump’s?” HERE)

GOP Rep. Says 14 FBI Whistleblowers Have Come Forward

More than a dozen FBI whistleblowers have come forward to Republican investigators in Congress, according to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).

The congressman, who is the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, told Fox News host Trey Gowdy the number has risen to 14 after the FBI raid at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

During a conversation about alleged politicization at the Justice Department, along with former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, Jordan made the case that the public has “figured it out” when it comes to what he characterized as the Left generating a lie, the “Big Media” reporting the lie, Big Tech amplifying the lie, and then both piling on Republicans when they catch on and say something. He said there are agents in the bureau who have realized the same.

“Fourteen FBI agents have come to our office as whistleblowers, and they are good people,” Jordan said. “There are lots of good people in the FBI. It’s the top that is the problem. Some of these good agents are coming to us, telling us what is baloney, what’s going on — the political nature now of the Justice Department — God bless them for doing it — talking about the school board issue, about a whole host of issues.” (Read more from “GOP Rep. Trump Thanks FBI, DOJ After Passports They Stole Are Returned

Former President Donald Trump has thanked the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for returning passports that he said they “stole” during last week’s raid of his home.

In a Truth Social post on Monday, the former president accused the FBI of stealing three of his passports while executing their search warrant, calling it “an assault on a political opponent at a level never seen before in our Country.” Trump thanked the agency, while also accusing agents of behavior like that of “a common criminal,” as he announced that his documents had been returned in a post on Tuesday evening.

“The DOJ and FBI just returned my passports,” Trump wrote. “Thank you! Unfortunately, when they Raided my home, Mar-a-Lago, 8 days ago, they just opened their arms and grabbed everything in sight, much as a common criminal would do. This shouldn’t happen in America!”

Taylor Budowich, Trump’s director of communications, shared to Twitter on Monday a redacted email that appeared to confirm the passports had been taken by authorities during the raid. (Read more from “Trump Thanks FBI, DOJ After Passports They Stole Are Returned” HERE)
