Over the past year, gun ownership has soared, particularly among black Americans concerned about self-defense.
Leon Spears, owner of D.C. Concealed Carry and a licensed firearms instructor, told the Daily Caller that he has seen a skyrocketing increase in gun sales among African Americans.
The reason, he said, was due to “national civil unrest, anxiety with the pandemic regarding financial insecurities and the highlighted political topic of gun control.”
“They’ve been thrust into … acting on their premonitions because of the most recent events,” he said.
In the first six months of 2020, gun purchases among African Americans increased by 58.2%, according to a survey conducted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). (Read more from “‘Do Not Rely On The Government To Protect You’: Black Gun Ownership Is Soaring, Here’s Why” HERE)

There are some liberal myths that (like a bad case of athlete’s foot) just refuse to go away. Ironically, these myths are easily refuted with a simple internet search, but liberals rarely let facts get in the way of a good talking point. The latest reappearance of these liberal fairytales was in the recent second presidential debate. Hillary Clinton, who is smart enough to know that these myths are about authentic as tales of alien encounters at an LSD convention, insisted on using these myths in the last debate. To me, that means that she either lied or she isn’t as smart as her supporters claim.
Myth #1 “The Clinton Surplus”
I’ve debunked this myth before in my writings here at Conservative Review, but like that foot fungus, or Jason from the Friday the 13th movies, it keeps coming back. Now, again, for the umpteenth time THERE WAS NO BUDGET SURPLUS IN THE CLINTON YEARS. Can I be candid here? If you believe that President Bill Clinton’s presidency ran a surplus in any year where he occupied the White House then 1) you don’t know what you’re talking about 2) you do know what you’re talking about and you’re lying 3) you aren’t interested in anything other than protecting the Democrat “brand.”
Here’s a simple way to debunk the myth that President Clinton ran a surplus that even liberals who choose to blind themselves like Oedipus can understand (if they choose to understand). The national debt (the accumulated debt resulting from annual federal budget deficits) rose EVERY YEAR Bill Clinton was in office. Questioning me because I’m a conservative and you think I’m shilling for the GOP? Then please go to the Department of the Treasury’s own website by clicking here and plug in the Clinton years. Voila! The national debt increased every year which, by using uncomplicated logic, must mean that Bill Clinton added to the national debt every year by running budget deficits, not surpluses. If you are interested in additional details on the many scams the liberals and their media chums employ to keep this myth going then please read this excellent article by Craig Steiner which demolishes every single liberal “Clinton surplus” scam.
Myth #2 “The Gun Show Loophole”
This liberal myth most likely originated in a liberal focus group where the goal was to fabricate terminology to mislead voters regarding access to firearms. There is NO gun show loophole. It doesn’t exist. Yes, that’s right, it’s completely made up and people using this talking point must not know that they sound ridiculous when they bring it up, Hillary included.
People who use this debunked, nonsensical, talking point are similar to that really loud guy at a small, intimate house party that’s talking loud enough for everyone to hear, and telling stories about his high school football days that absolutely no one cares about. He looks ridiculous but he’s the only one who doesn’t know it. If you go to a gun show and ask a federally licensed firearms dealer to bypass the background check citing the “gun show loophole” you will likely be thrown out or, at a minimum, you will be sternly corrected. Again, don’t believe me, then check out this terrific video by Steven Crowder in which he humorously tries to use the “gun show loophole” to speed up the gun buying process. In short, some private sales and transfers or firearms, do not require a NICS check. But, this has nothing to do with a gun show and EVERY licensed federal firearms dealer at a gun show must, by law, conduct a background check. Saying otherwise makes you look silly, or it makes you a died-in-the-wool liberal, but I just said the same thing twice. A North Carolina pastor has described how a veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder walked into a church with a high-powered assault rifle and asked the pastor if he could pray for him.
Pastor Larry Wright, who is a retired Army drill sergeant as well as a city councilor in Fayetteville, N.C., told the Fayetteville Observer that he was conducting a New Year’s Eve prayer service at Heal the Land Outreach Ministries when the unidentified man walked into the sanctuary with the gun in one hand and an ammunition clip in the other.
“I asked him ‘can I help you?'”, Wright told WRAL-TV. “[The gunman’s] next words were ‘can you pray for me?’ When he said that, then I knew everything was going to be all right.”
Wright took the man’s gun and patted him down to be certain there were no other weapons hidden on him. The man was invited to sit in the front pew, then approached Wright after the service.
“He gave his life to Christ,” Wright told the Observer. (Read more from “Veteran Armed With Assault Rifle Walks Into Church – What the Pastor Does Next Is Incredible” HERE)

One of the worst things ever written on the subject of abortion was a column in which a putatively conservative Christian writer announced that he was supporting a slate of pro-choice candidates in local elections, because they had better positions on … air pollution. “I’m pro-life,” he wrote. “Pro- my children’s lives.” (By the way, the air in his city was already among the cleanest in America, and the pro-choice Democrats whom he supported, who now mismanage Dallas, did nothing to make it cleaner.)
Others who present themselves as spokesmen for Catholic or evangelical Christianity have argued that candidates like Ted Cruz or Rick Santorum are “anti-abortion, but not pro-life” because of the candidates’ positions on the Second Amendment, capital punishment, or even immigration. As William Briggs chronicled at The Stream, Vatican officials are getting in on the action — accusing skeptics of climate change panic of contributing to abortion, human trafficking, and even organ piracy, because they oppose giving the UN more power to reduce fossil fuel use.
We can’t read minds, so we don’t claim to know what’s really going on in the heads of people who say such things.
1. Are they boldly consistent thinkers, looking bravely beyond the stale American left/right spectrum to assert a “radically” Christian position that challenges all of us?
2. Are they mushy-headed, impressionable, and desperate to fit in with their fellow shoppers at the local organic co-op? Or
3. Are they committed leftists, who put the lives of the unborn second or third to other priorities, who are working to muddy the issues and weaken the coalition of Christians and conservatives?
We suspect that they are mostly (2), convinced they are (1), gradually transforming themselves into (3).
Back in the 1980s, left-wing Catholics invented a slogan that went far and wide, and gave political cover to pro-choice Democrats like Teddy Kennedy, Geraldine Ferraro and Mario Cuomo. The “seamless garment” was a term of art among pant-suited feminist nuns and tenured, tattooed ex-Jesuits. It referred to a whole raft of “life issues” that went far beyond abortion, to include military spending, Medicaid funding, pollution control, the minimum wage, food stamps, and pretty much every subject dear to the Democratic National Committee.
By presenting such disparate issues as a “seamless,” interconnected whole, leftist Christians could claim that while Republicans might be sound on just one of those topics, abortion, Democrats were better on all the others. So pro-life voters not only could but probably should vote for liberal pro-choice candidates, since on balance their record was better.
Sometimes the seamless garment workers even add some decorative stitching, and argue that conservative policies on other issues increase the incidence of abortion, which means that pro-life conservatives are simply hypocrites. As the rhetoric goes, “You stop caring about life the moment it leaves the womb.”
There are so many intellectual fallacies woven into the seamless garment that it’s tempting to turn this column into a logic lesson. But with more than a million unborn children murdered every year with the connivance and funding of our government, and key pro-life bills before Congress and state legislatures across the U.S., protecting the lives of vulnerable unborn Americans is far too urgent for logic-chopping. So we’ll just offer a single analogy to help the reader shred the seamless garment whenever someone tries to pull that fake wool over his eyes.
Legal Protection for the Vulnerable is Non-Negotiable
If we lived in 1850, when slavery was legal in half the states, how seriously would you take someone who voted for pro-slavery politicians, but claimed that he really opposed the practice? Instead of a radical step like abolition, he’d argue, he wanted to eliminate the economic conditions that drove whites to feel like they had to own any slaves. He proposed government subsidies for farmers to buy mechanical harvesting equipment, to gradually reduce the need for slavery. In the meantime, of course, whites would still own millions of blacks and be able to flog them and even kill them with impunity. But his long-term, holistic strategy would promote a broader “culture of freedom,” and formed part of a “seamless garment” of “freedom issues,” including economic empowerment and redistribution of wealth — which in the long run would benefit black Americans. So he was the real pro-freedom voter, rather than those single-issue abolitionists.
You would know that someone who argued like this was at best deeply deluded, and at worst a slithering apologist for slavery. You would answer him that the legal protection for the fundamental human rights of African-Americans was a non-negotiable issue, and that until he supported that, all his effusions of concern for the well-being of farmers, black and white, were nothing more than a smokescreen. What black Americans demanded in 1850 were full legal rights. They deserved nothing less. It’s the same for unborn Americans today.
Being pro-life means that you favor full legal protection for unborn life. Period. That is all it means. If you want to take a stand on immigration, climate change, pollution, or food stamps, by all means take it and argue it on its merits as beneficial to society, or helpful to human flourishing. But don’t demean the lives and mock the deaths of a million children each year in order to do it. On Thursday, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill to prohibit the state from implementing or enforcing federal gun “laws,” rules, regulations and orders that are contrary to the Tennessee state constitution. It passed 74-20 in the House, and 29-1 in the Senate.
Introduced by Sen. Richard Briggs, Senate Bill 1110 (SB1110) will ban Tennessee state or local public funds, personnel or property from being used for the “implementation, regulation, or enforcement of any federal law, executive order, rule or regulation regulating the ownership, use, or possession of firearms, ammunition, or firearm accessories” if such use “would result in the violation of Tennessee statutory or common law or the Constitution of Tennessee.”
Originally introduced in the House as HB1341 by Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver, the bill represents and important first step to ending federal gun control in the state.
“I’m from the cut that there is no need for Washington D.C. to be the end all and be all with regards to the regulatory world,” said Weaver. “We should respect our 10th Amendment and shift the power back to the states and that’s what House Bill 1341 does.” (Read more from “Here’s a State That Is Trying to Block Federal Gun Control” HERE)

Amongst all the chaos in Seattle during Friday’s May Day riot, a man was seen walking through the crowd wearing a tactical vest with an SKS rifle slung over his shoulder.
Identified as Shayne Butts, he tells reporters “I’m here to ensure peoples’ civil rights get respected, just the basics, First Amendment right to peacefully assemble, to free speech… I don’t like communism, but these people have a right to free speech.”

On April 22, a customer at a Kroger in Little Rock, Arkansas, saw an elderly man surrounded by “seven people,” so he drew his gun and intervened to protect the gentleman.
The group surrounding the elderly man then turned their attention toward the armed customer and implored him to look the other way. According to Fox 16, the group kept yelling, “[This] isn’t your fight, you need to walk away and you need to put the gun down.”
The armed citizen refused to comply, and instead kept his gun trained on the group as they fled the scene.
The armed citizen–who simply gave his name as “Gene”–said that he could hear a woman behind him calling 911 and when police arrived they ascertained that the elderly man was allegedly “being assaulted by his nephew” at the time that Gene intervened. The Department of Justice is “monitoring” Gun Cave Indoor Firing Range owner Jan Morgan in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for banning Muslims from shooting in the facility.
At that time, Fox News reported that Morgan decided to ban Muslims after “two customers she deemed suspicious” showed up in September. Since that time, she has excluded those “she believes to be Muslim based upon their names.” She said, “We are dealing in lethal firearms. I am not going to let a Nazi shoot in here, or a Ku Klux Klan member in here, either.”
Breitbart News reported that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder asking him to intervene. In the letter, CAIR said, “Given the recent spike in anti-Muslim rhetoric, including Islamophobic statements by government officials, community leaders and media outlets, death threats, and other bias incidents targeting Muslims, I urge you to investigate this matter soon” . . .
And now, the DOJ says it is “monitoring the situation”. . .
CAIR’s Jennifer Wicks said, “We welcome this positive development and hope it leads to a thorough investigation of clear violations of the civil rights of American Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim by the gun range owner.” (Read more from “Department of Justice Monitoring Gun Range Owner Who Banned Muslims” HERE)

A Catholic priest from Ann Arbor, Michigan, recently encouraged his flock to arm themselves against worldly dangers via concealed carry because, “We’re not in Mayberry anymore, Toto.”
The Rev. Edward Fride announced during a sermon at Christ the King church last month that the parish would be sponsoring classes to help parishioners earn concealed carry permits in response to an uptick in crime in the area.
Fride sent a letter to parishioners using “a bad mix of two entertainment references” to explain why the church is encouraging concealed carry after some churchgoers questioned the religious merit of holding the classes.
From the letter:
Mayberry was a fictitious, idyllic rural American city in which the public safety needs were met by a kind-hearted sheriff and a clueless but well-intentioned deputy. The only “threat” to public safety was a bumbling, genial ne’er-do-well who was so accustomed to staying in jail that he had his own cell, which was never locked. The show, The Andy Griffith Show, was so popular that it had two spin offs, Mayberry RFD and Gomer Pyle, USMC. It was popular because it showed a kind of life that everybody wished were true, no threats, everything is fine, everybody’s perfectly safe, etc. There is no crisis that cannot be solved by hugs and Aunt Bea’s cooking. The “Toto” reference is to a famous line from The Wizard of Oz in which Dorothy, who comes from a rural Kansas version of Mayberry, but suddenly finds herself in a dangerous environment of witches, deadly flying monkeys, (I still have nightmares about those wretched and heinous beasts!) and real threats to her life. She begins to comprehend this and says to her cute dog: “We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto!” It is very common for Christians to simply assume that they live in Mayberry, trusting that because they know the Lord Jesus, everything will always be fine and nothing bad can happen to them and their families. Those who have followed the Lord Jesus for more than 20 minutes, however, have often experienced first-hand that the reality of living in a fallen universe can be very different. How to balance faith, reality, prudence, and trust is one of those critical questions that we struggle with all our lives. Pretending we are in Mayberry, while we are clearly not, can have very negative consequences for ourselves and those we love, especially those we have a responsibility to protect. If we are not in Mayberry, is there a real threat?

We have to give the Democrats credit for persistence – they don’t give up when it comes to going after the Second Amendment. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. In mid-March, only a few days after the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) indefinitely postponed its plan to ban common, green-tipped M855 ball ammo as “armor piercing,” Democrats in Congress decided to try it legislatively.
A few months ago, the ATF said it was considering removing a sporting exemption on the popular round. In late February and early March, word reached the media and the general public about the proposal and tens of thousands of angry gun owners flooded the ATF with emails, faxes and letters. Days before the comment period was over, the ATF announced it was indefinitely postponing the process though it said it would like to revisit the idea at an unspecified date. From there Democrats in Congress took up the torch.
U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel, a Democrat from New York, introduced his “Armor Piercing Bullets Act” to the House, appropriately enough in keeping with the insanity of the bill, on Friday, March 13. Engel’s bill goes much further than the ATF’s proposal would have gone as he would attempt to ban any ammunition that would go through the soft body armor worn by police.
That would effectively ban any Centerfire Rifle ammunition, as the bullet from any deer rifle will easily go through a bulletproof vest. Of course such a widespread ban would warm the heart of any gun banning liberal.
The ATF’s original rule change would have prevented the sale to civilians of one particular type of ball ammunition because these rounds can be used in “pistols” that shoot the 5.56/.223 round. These novelty weapons are essentially cut down AR-15s—they have AR-15 receivers and use the same magazines. These firearms are expensive, bulky, and not easily concealable, despite what Engels and his allies say.
There were repercussions for the administration from the ATF’s proposed rule change. The same day Engel propose his bill, ATF Director B. Todd Jones announced his resignation. Deputy Director Thomas E. Brandon will serve as acting director until a replacement is nominated. While he had already been planning to resign, it happened much sooner than expected.
It is hard to believe that Engels’ bill, and similar proposals by Senate Democrats, are serious efforts and not simply pre-election year efforts to fire up their base. 240 members of Congress, including five Senate Democrats, signed a letter objecting to the ban, so they must know the bill has little chance of passage, even if it has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
The response of congressional Republicans has been encouraging. Standing up for the Second Amendment is one of the few instances where they generally are reliably conservative, if only to keep their constituents quiet, if not happy. Rep. Tom Rooney of Florida introduced a bill to prohibit the ATF from creating any new restrictions on the manufacture, importation or sale of ammunition. If the numbers of Congressmen opposed to the ATF’s restriction is any indication, it should receive widespread support.
Congress is not the only place where there has been a pushback against the federal government’s efforts. The attorneys general of 23 states sent a letter to the ATF urging the agency not to attempt to ban the ammunition in the future.
This effort by the ATF and the Obama administration was beat back by a vigilant and engaged public, the formula that will be necessary to combat any future gun control legislation. (See, “Democrats Still After Ammo for AR-15s” originally posted HERE)
