Justin Amash Nixes 2020 Presidential Run as Third-Party Candidate

Michigan Rep. Justin Amash has announced that he will not run for president as a third-party candidate, CNN reported Saturday.

“After much reflection, I’ve concluded that circumstances don’t lend themselves to my success as a candidate for president this year, and therefore I will not be a candidate,” he tweeted Saturday.

The Republican-turned-independent said in early April he was looking “closely” at a bid as Libertarian Party candidate, after he stopped actively campaigning for his House seat in February while he considered jumping into the presidential race.

The move brings to an end to his extended flirtation with a third-party candidacy that could have introduced a new element of uncertainty into the race between President Donal Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, according to the New York Times.

He came into the national spotlight last May when he announced his support for impeaching President Trump over the findings in former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He was the first and only House Republican to support impeachment, eventually voting for both articles of impeachment against the President as an independent late last year. Trump-Hater Amash Might Run for President

Rep. Justin Amash took to the Sunday morning political programs to defend his July 4 editorial announcing his departure from the Republican Party — and suggested he may end up running for president.

Amash appeared first on CNN’s “State of the Union” to announced that he’s mulling over the possibility of running as a third party candidate for president. Amash is libertarian, but says he would be open to launching a bid as an Independent.

“I still wouldn’t rule anything like that out, I believe I have to use my skills, my public influence, where it serves the country best,” Amash said. “And I believe I have to defend the Constitution in whichever way that works best.”

When he runs to retain his Congressional seat in November, Amash will run as an Independent instead of as a Republican, a decision he announced in a widely touted op-ed published on July 4 — a declaration of independence, so to speak, from the GOP. In the essay, Amash says he isn’t blaming a single entity for his decision and did not name President Donald Trump, though Amash is, so far, the only Republican member of Congress to join the campaign to begin impeachment proceedings.

“I’ve had concerns with the Republican Party for several years,” Amash wrote. “I’ve had concerns with the party system generally. When I first got to Congress I thought I could change things from the inside, but as I’ve spent time there I’ve seen that not only me, I don’t think there is anyone in there who can change the system.” (Read more from “Trump-Hater Amash Might Run for President” HERE)

‘Impeach Trump’ Justin Amash Leaves the GOP

Michigan Rep. Justin Amash announced Thursday that he is leaving the Republican Party, saying he is disenchanted and “frightened” by party politics — a move that was quickly described as “great news” by President Trump.

Amash, a libertarian and a critic of President Trump, made the announcement in an op-ed for The Washington Post, in which he said he had once run as a Republican due to the GOP’s belief in limited government, economic freedom and individual liberty.

“In recent years, though, I’ve become disenchanted with party politics and frightened by what I see from it,” he said in the op-ed. “The two-party system has evolved into an existential threat to American principles and institutions.” . . .

Amash is the only House Republican to have called for Trump’s impeachment, and his announcement comes weeks after he resigned from the conservative House Freedom Caucus in June. Amash had said he didn’t want to be a “further distraction” for the caucus. . .

However, despite his clashes with Trump, Amash did not mention the president in his op-ed Thursday, citing instead “the consolidation of political power and near disintegration of representative democracy.” (Read more from “‘Impeach Trump’ Justin Amash Leaves the GOP” HERE)

Anti-Trump Amash Leaves the House Freedom Caucus

By Townhall. Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) on Monday stepped down from the House Freedom Caucus and the board, saying he “didn’t want to be a further distraction from the group,” POLITICO reported. “I have the highest regard for them and they’re my close friends.”

The Michigan representative told CNN he stopped attending Freedom Caucus meetings months ago after clashing with members of the group. He did, however, attend a board meeting on Monday before resigning. . .

Although Amash is one of the group’s founding members, over the last year he has been at odds with others in the Caucus. Specifically, Amash has called for President Donald Trump’s impeachment following Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. (Read more from “Anti-Trump Amash Leaves the House Freedom Caucus” HERE)

Trump on Impeachment and Nixon: ‘He Left. I Don’t Leave.’

By Politico. President Donald Trump, whose actions during the Russia investigation have prompted comparisons to the Watergate scandal, drew a distinction between himself and President Richard Nixon on Monday: “He left. I don’t leave. A big difference.”

He made the comment on the same day that John Dean, the former Nixon White House counsel, appeared before the House Judiciary Committee for a hearing on special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, which outlined possible obstruction of justice by Trump. Dean testified that he saw “remarkable parallels” between Nixon’s actions and Trump’s.

The president spoke to reporters a short while later from the South Lawn of the White House and answered questions about the possibility of impeachment.

“We have no collusion, no obstruction, no anything,” Trump said during an event honoring this year’s Indianapolis 500 champion, Simon Pagenaud, and Team Penske. “When you look at past impeachments, whether it was President Clinton or — I guess President Nixon never got there. He left. I don’t leave. A big difference. I don’t leave.” (Read more from “Trump on Impeachment and Nixon: ‘He Left. I Don’t Leave.'” HERE)

Trump Supporter Confronts Justin Amash for Endorsing Impeachment, and It Gets Very Heated

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) was confronted by a Trump supporter at his town hall meeting who wanted answers after the Republican Libertarian called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. . .

“This is what Mueller and the Democrats have all tried to, and the deep state, the bureaucrats, I don’t know if you’ve ever dealt with a bureaucrat, but it’s just mind-boggling that we have to deal with them,” the woman said, “I have a lot of experience.”

“How come you’ve become a Democrat when we voted for you as a Republican because you just drink the same Kool-Aid as all the Democrats?” she asked. . .

“First I have one of the most constitutionally conservative and fiscally conservative voting records in the whole Congress,” Amash answered to great applause.

“And in fact, I have voted to spend less than any member of Congress in either chamber since I’ve been in Congress,” he explained,” so I’ve voted for less spending. When I got elected as part of the Tea Party movement, people cared about limited government, they cared about fiscal conservatism, making sure that our government wasn’t spending too much.
