The Last Tempation of Mitt

By McKay Coppins. It wasn’t long after Mitt Romney tottered off the national stage in November, 2012, bringing an end — it seemed — to the long, tragic story of his political career, when Spencer Zwick started getting phone calls from conservative millionaires who were clamoring for one last sequel.

Zwick, the square-jawed finance wunderkind who masterminded the candidate’s phenomenally successful fundraising operation in 2012, had returned after the election to the private equity firm he co-founded with Romney’s son, Tagg — but Mitt’s network of GOP money men wouldn’t stop hounding him. Inside Solamere Capital’s pristine, white-walled offices on Boston’s trendy Newbury Street, Zwick often found himself on the phone with major Republican fundraisers, bundlers, and donors putting the same questions to him.

“I got calls from people every day asking, ‘Do you think he’ll do it? How can we convince him to do it?’” Zwick said in an interview with BuzzFeed News.

With Friday’s news that Romney told a group of donors he was now actively considering a third presidential bid in 2016, it appears the boosters have gotten through. “Everybody in here can go tell your friends that I’m considering a run,” the former candidate told the gathering in midtown Manhattan, according to Politico. But insiders who spoke to BuzzFeed News about Romney’s evolution on the 2016 question said he only began to entertain the possibility recently, and that he still needs to weigh a number of factors — including Jeb Bush’s electability — before he decides to take the plunge. Obama Civil Liberties Nominee: ‘Inappropriate’ to Profile Foreigners from High-Risk Countries

Photo Credit: Breitbart Next week, the Senate will vote on Obama’s nominee to Chair the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, David Medine. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, followed up the confirmation hearing with a list of questions for the nominee. (The complete questionnaire is posted below.)

In his answers to Grassley’s question about profiling for terrorism among foreign nationals, Medine wrote, “In general, profiling of foreign nationals based solely on their point of departure to the United States is inappropriate.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings on February 28 of this year, approving the nomination of Medine. A vote will be held in the Senate next week. The other four nominees to the board have already been confirmed. They were asked to respond to the same questionnaire.

Obama to be Democratic Nominee in 2016?

Photo Credit: WNDA new poll of Democrats on their preferred candidates for the 2016 presidential race has produced the Obama name, which pollster Fritz Wenzel described as “bizarre.”

The results come from a poll by Wenzel of Wenzel Strategies, who found that Hillary Clinton is winning 55 percent of the support from respondents who said they plan to vote in the Democrat Party primary.

But in the No. 2 position was Michelle Obama, with support from 19 percent of the respondents.

“In a limited field of just four candidates – Clinton, Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, and John Kerry, Michelle Obama finished a very distant second place at 19 percent support. The second-place finish of Obama is every bit as bizarre as Clinton’s first-place finish is predictable,” he said.

“Joe Biden’s support by just 8 percent of likely Democratic voters is simply pathetic, and if John Kerry ever harbored a thought that his current role as Secretary of State might support a presidential comeback, this survey shows he should discard such a thought,” Wenzel said.

Labor Secretary Nominee Accused of 'Quid Pro Quo' Deal

Thomas Perez, President Obama’s nominee for Labor secretary, “manipulated” federal law as assistant attorney general by negotiating a so-called “quid pro quo” deal in which he persuaded a Minnesota city to drop a Supreme Court lawsuit in exchange for the Justice Department staying out of whistleblower cases brought against the city, according to a joint congressional Republican report.

In the report obtained by Fox News, Republican investigators conclude Perez “manipulated the rule of law and pushed the limits of justice to make this deal happen.”

The 67-page report also states that the Justice Department opting out of the cases resulted in taxpayers paying nearly $200 million in un-recouped damages.

The cases dropped by the agency were against the city of St. Paul and alleged the city received millions in Department of Housing and Urban Development fund, but failed to file the requisite paperwork regarding the hiring of low-income workers.

In exchange, St. Paul dropped its appeal to the Supreme Court in an unrelated case in which property owners said the city made extraordinary efforts, through strict code enforcement, to condemn their properties.
