Zelensky vs. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church

On January 2, an Orthodox church in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, was covered in blood. In the morning, a man burst into the church and turned the crucifix over, broke several icons, threw banners on the floor, and finally cut the priest’s throat with a razor. A few days earlier, in the city of Chornomorsk, parishioners of an Orthodox church only at the last moment disarmed a man who was about to stab the priest with a knife. In the village of Chechelnyk, a man in camouflage brutally beat a priest right on the street, breaking his nose and shouting curses.

There is a backstory to the above. Stand-up comedians at Kvartal 95, the film studio co-founded by now President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, recently released a video where they obscenely insulted Orthodox priests and publicly wished them death. The video is a news parody in the style of The Daily Show that mocks the church and refers to its clergy as “Russian agents.” Many experts see a direct connection between the appeals of the actors and the recent violence.

The target of all these attacks is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which used to be in unity with the Moscow Patriarchate but has had an independent and autonomous status for more than 30 years. . .

Fox News journalist Tucker Carlson assessed the [current] situation accurately: “Zelenskyy’s secret police have raided monasteries across Ukraine, and even a convent full of nuns, and arrested dozens of priests for no justifiable reasons whatsoever and in clear violation of the Ukrainian Constitution, which no longer matters. And in the face of this, the Biden’s administration has said nothing. Not one word. Instead, they continue to push to send Zelenskyy more tax dollars.”

[It seems] Carlson is absolutely right. The president, in violation of Ukrainian laws, imposed sanctions against Ukrainian bishops and then revoked the Ukrainian citizenship of some other bishops, despite the fact that this clearly contradicts the constitution. After Ukraine Scores U.S. Tanks, Kyiv Plans Push for Modern Fighter Jets

Ukraine intends to press the United States for fourth-generation fighter jets after President Joe Biden agreed to send dozens of top U.S. battle tanks to aid Kyiv’s war against Russia.

The White House announced on Wednesday that it will send 31 M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine, a major reversal after officials said the tanks were too complicated and high-maintenance for the inexperienced Ukraine military to effectively use. Biden said the tanks symbolized “unflagging commitment” to Ukraine’s cause.

“These tanks are further evidence of our enduring, unflagging commitment to Ukraine and our confidence in the skill of the Ukrainian forces,” Biden said. “As I told President Zelensky when he was here — and today is his birthday, by the way — in December: We’re with you for as long as it takes, Mr. President.”

The tanks will be paid for through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, a fund approved by Congress to aid Ukraine. Using the fund will delay Ukraine’s reception of the tanks by months, according to POLITICO.

The Pentagon will procure the tanks as well as support vehicles and supplies to give to the Ukrainians to maintain the battle machines. While the aid is being prepared and shipped, the U.S. will train the Ukrainian military on how to use and maintain the tanks. Joe Biden’s ‘Brutal’ Gaffe Tarnishes Monumental Ukraine Announcement

President Joe Biden on Wednesday appeared to momentarily state the wrong country’s name while delivering an important announcement regarding the sending of tanks to Ukraine.

The slipup occurred as Biden listed statistics for various armaments sent by Ukraine’s allies to aid the country against the invading Russians. He said such supplies were “all to help counter Ukraine’s brutal aggression that’s happening because of Russia.”

The president seemingly meant to say “Russia’s brutal aggression.” He paused briefly after he said aggression, then added the statement about Russia to the end of the sentence. Earlier in the speech, he had said the phrase “Russia’s aggression” multiple times.

The gaffe occurred during Biden’s announcement that the United States would provide Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces with 31 M1 Abrams battle tanks.

Report: U.S. Moving Towards Delivering Abrams Tanks To Ukraine, Germany To Also Send Tanks

According to a Tuesday report, United States officials have said that the Biden administration is moving in the direction of delivering a number of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine with a potential update on the plan this week.

The news would come in coordination with a move from Germany, which would also send some of its Leopard 2 tanks, as well as allowing more tanks made by Germany to be sent by other countries, according to The Wall Street Journal.

On Tuesday, Spiegel Politics reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is now also planning to send tanks to Ukraine. Poland has also officially requested approval from Germany to send Leopard tanks to the country.

“The Germans have already received our request for consent to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine,” Poland Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said. “I also appeal to the German side to join the coalition of countries supporting Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks.”

The United States, Germany, and other countries have contended over the delivery of tanks to war-torn Ukraine in order to help the nation in its fight against Russia. (Read more from “Report: U.S. Moving Towards Delivering Abrams Tanks to Ukraine, Germany to Also Send Tanks” HERE)

Pressure Grows on Germany to Authorize Tank Shipment to Break Ukraine War Stalemate

Germany found itself under intense and growing pressure Sunday as the government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz weighed whether to authorize the shipment of its coveted Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

U.S., Ukrainian and European officials urged Berlin to act after a summit Friday at the American military base in Ramstein, Germany, failed to nail down an agreement.

Ukraine says it needs some 300 Western tanks to bolster its forces against dug-in Russian troops in the eastern and southern parts of the country in the 11-month-old war. Both sides are preparing for further offensives when the weather allows.

An intelligence assessment of the fighting over the weekend from the British Defense Ministry described an increasingly deadlocked struggle in Ukraine’s Donbas region, with new Russian overall commander Sergei Shoigu reorganizing forces and apparently settling in for a long, grinding war of attrition.

Germany has balked at supplying Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine or authorizing other European countries such as Poland to transfer their own Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, in part because of divisions within Mr. Scholz’s coalition government and in part for fear that the move would prove too provocative to the Kremlin. Is a Real War About to Break Out in Ukraine?

As readers know, I am a critic of Putin’s “limited military operation” in Ukraine. It was eight years late, and its limited objective is unrealistic. Putin needed to occupy Kiev the minute he saw the US coup unfolding. Failing this, he needed to reincorporate Donbass in 2014 prior to its partial occupation by neo-Nazi militias and Ukrainian military. He failed to act in a timely fashion because he was deceived by the West with the Minsk Agreement, which was a delaying tactic to keep Russia at bay until the US had built and equipped a Ukrainian Army.

I understand why the Kremlin limited its intervention last February to clearing the Independent Donbass Republics of Ukrainian forces. Putin did not invade Ukraine, because he did not want widespread death and destruction in Ukraine, long a part of Russia with extensive intermarriage and mixing of populations. Where the Kremlin failed was in not realizing that Washington would not permit the conflict to be limited to the clearing of Donbass.

Having delayed necessary action for eight years, the Kremlin needed a lightening, overwhelming attack that knocked the entirety of Ukraine out of action immediately before Washington and NATO could get involved. Instead the limited military operation was confined to the territory of the breakaway republics, proceeded slowly to spare civilian lives and infrastructure, and involved little of the Russian Army. The fighting was undertaken by the Donbass militias and a private military organization, the Wagner Group, that functions as an auxiliary to the Russian Army. The Kremlin did not have ready any reserves to maintain the ever-lengthening lines of the slow Russian advance that gave Washington time to widen the conflict. It was this that made possible the limited Ukrainian “counterattacks” that had no meaningful effect. The Russian lines in two sectors pulled back in advance and made penetration impossible.

The Russian pullbacks were misrepresented as “defeats” and gave rise to such nonsense as “Ukraine in Crimea by Christmas.” Washington and NATO are lost in their own narrative and believe their own propaganda.

Mike Whitney looked beyond Western propaganda for information and presents his findings that there are now 540,000 Russian Army soldiers stationed around Ukraine and in Belarus provisioned with enormous numbers of tanks, artillery, rockets, missiles, and ammunition prepared to launch this time a real invasion. If this report is true, it indicates that Putin has learned from his many mistakes. If the report is false, it suggests that Putin is incapable of recognizing the reality that he faces.

In the Western world Russian studies has degenerated into Russophobia. Objective experts are a thing of the past. One of the few remaining objective experts wonders if the stage is now set for a ground war unanticipated by Washington and NATO. If events have forced Putin to abandon his limited operation, Ukraine will simply be rolled up.

The Polish defense minister seems to be reaching a similar conclusion. There are indications that mobilization is beginning with the callup of 200,000 reservists. Whether this is to protect against Russian attack or to occupy western Ukraine which Poland still claims while Russia takes the eastern half or to be sent as reinforcements for Ukraine is unknown.

If Zelensky and Washington are capable of reason, the reported assembled Russian invasion force, if actually present, will not have to be used. The destruction of Ukraine can be prevented by Washington’s acceptance of the return of the Russian liberated territory to Mother Russia and agreement that Ukraine will be a neutral disarmed state and never a member of NATO.

Putin has said that by spurning his diplomacy, the West has left force as his only means of dealing with the West. Putin’s previous reluctance to use force has worsened the situation. Now if he uses force late in the game, Washington will be confused. How will Washington respond if the Russian Army rolls up Ukraine? Washington will commit the world to nuclear war if Washington thinks a commitment of US soldiers to Ukraine’s defense would stop a Russian Army advance. The American soldiers would be slaughtered along with the remaining Ukrainians. What then? Can arrogant Washington overflowing with hubris accept defeat, with the consequence being the likely dissolution of its European NATO empire, or will the madmen who are misruling us push the button?

Russian Leader Claims New Arms Package Will Likely Result in Nuclear War; Ukraine Defense Ministry Corrupt

A close ally of President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday that delivering offensive weapons to Kyiv will lead to a world disaster by making arguments against using nuclear weapons untenable.

Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the Duma — Russia’s lower house of parliament — warned that US and NATO support of Ukraine is pushing the world to a “terrible war”.

He singled out the delivery of longer range weapons that could hit Russian territory.

“If Washington and NATO countries supply weapons that will be used to strike civilian cities and attempt to seize our territories, as they threaten, this will lead to retaliatory measures using more powerful weapons,” Volodin said on Telegram. . .

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense denied signing military contracts at inflated prices on Sunday, rejecting accusations of corruption in a country where embezzlement is rife. Milley: ‘Very, Very Difficult’ for Ukraine to Push Russia Out This Year

Ukraine will have an incredibly difficult time pushing Russia out of its territory this year, Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Friday, and he reiterated his belief that the war will most likely end at the negotiating table.

Milley provided his most recent perspective on the war in Ukraine during a press conference with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in Germany following a high-stakes meeting at Ramstein Air Base with defense leaders from roughly 50 countries. The Defense Contact Group convenes monthly to discuss the latest developments in the war, and this was its eighth meeting.

“From a military standpoint, I still maintain that for this year, it would be very, very difficult to militarily eject the Russian forces from every inch of Russian-occupied Ukraine,” he said, noting that future Ukrainian battlefield successes would be contingent upon the delivery and training of the newly allocated security aid to Ukraine from the United States and other Western countries.

“What can happen is a continued defense, stabilizing the front,” Milley added. “I think it’s possible to clearly do that. I think depending on the delivery and training of all of this equipment. I do think it’s very, very possible for the Ukrainians to run a significant tactical or even operational level offensive operation to liberate as much Ukrainian territory as possible.” (Read more from “Milley: ‘Very, Very Difficult’ for Ukraine to Push Russia Out This Year” HERE)

Top Putin Ally Directly Threatens West With Nuclear Strikes if Russia Loses Ukraine War

One of Putin’s closest allies has threatened to unleash nuclear war on the West if Russia is defeated in Ukraine.

Ex-Russian president Dmitry Medvedev made the warning to Nato leaders as he appeared to urge them to halt sending weapons to Zelensky’s troops.

He posted on Telegram: “The defeat of a nuclear power in a conventional war may trigger a nuclear war.

“Nuclear powers have never lost major conflicts on which their fate depends.

“And this should be obvious to anyone. Even a Western politician with any trace of intelligence.” (Read more from “Top Putin Ally Directly Threatens West With Nuclear Strikes if Russia Loses Ukraine War” HERE)

Russia to Hold Mysterious U.N. Security Council Meeting on Ukraine

A Russian envoy to the United Nations suggested Moscow would deliver a sharp riposte to criticism of its invasion of Ukraine and hold an informal meeting at the body to outline its stance.

The first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyanskiy, took aim at the nature of U.N. discussions about the war in Ukraine in a Telegram post on January 12, the Russian state-run news agency TASS reported.

In it, Polyanskiy criticized how on January 13, “western sponsors of Ukraine” would hold a meeting “the exact topic of which they cannot even formulate.” He said that “once a month” U.N. members would push an “anti-Russian” slant during discussions about the war.

He then issued an ambiguous warning about upcoming U.N. meetings, writing, “I will not expand on what will happen in the Security Council at our suggestion in Ukraine at the beginning of next week.” (Read more from “Russia to Hold Mysterious U.N. Security Council Meeting on Ukraine” HERE)
