Gunmen Shot Dead in Texas After Opening Fire Outside Prophet Muhammad ‘Cartoon’ Show

download (5)Two gunmen shot a security officer outside a “cartoon contest” depicting the prophet Muhammad near Dallas and were then shot and killed by police, authorities said late Sunday night.

Garland police spokesman Joe Harn told The Washington Post that the shooting occurred about 7 p.m. Sunday night (8 p.m. Eastern Time) outside the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, some 20 miles northeast of Dallas, when two armed men pulled up in a car in front of the event center and both started shooting at a Garland Independent School District security officer. In response, Garland police opened fire on the two gunmen, he said.

Both gunmen were killed, Harn said. Their names have not yet been released. The security officer who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The officer has been treated and released, he said.

The incident occurred outside the Curtis Culwell Center during a contest hosted by the New York-based American Freedom Defense Initiative, which promised to award $10,000 for the best cartoon depicting the prophet Muhammad, according to the Associated Press. Dutch politician Geert Wilders, an outspoken critic against radical Islam, was the keynote speaker at the event. Just before the shooting, he and Pamela Geller presented a check to contest’s winner, Bosch Fawstin, according to the Daily Caller.

The competition had been a point of contention in the community since Garland Independent School District agreed to rent out the event center to the group, which is considered an anti-Muslim “hate group” by the [extremist] Southern Poverty Law Center. Story of Man Shot in Neighbor’s Yard Turns out to have a Heartbreaking Twist

A heartbreaking twist has been revealed in the story of a Texas man shot dead on a neighbor’s porch at 4 a.m. after police say he came knocking and demanding to be let in. According to the victim’s family, Spencer Crandall had been suffering from two ruptured discs in his back and had been taking muscle relaxers.

That, his wife said, led him to sometimes sleepwalk. . .

According to his family, he took his faith very seriously, having done his own mission. He was also an Eagle Scout.

Ryan added: “His favorite was to go out with missionaries. He loved missionary work, and teaching other people about Jesus Christ.”

WFAA-TV says the homeowner isn’t likely to be charged, especially because he said he only fired his weapon because Spencer was trying to force his way into the neighbor’s home. (Read more about the man who was shot in neighbor’s yard HERE)

Fmr FBI Asst Director: ‘Race Provocateurs’ Incited Violence Towards Police

Ronald T. Hosko — a former assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and current president of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund — issued a statement Sunday condemning the brutal murder of two New York Police Department officers and placing the blame for their deaths on “race provocateurs.”

“While the criminal who shot these officers down is ultimately responsible for their murders, a thoughtful society must examine the social circumstances that fostered such outrageous criminal conduct,” Hosko stated. “To those who have chosen to incite violence against law enforcement through the reckless vilification of police officers — shame on you.”

Hosko then went on to single out racial activists, the media and even government officials for fostering a hostile anti-police sentiment that led to the deaths of two officers Saturday.

“From race provocateurs looking for five minutes of fame, to those in the media who wantonly mischaracterized and sensationalized recent criminal cases, to the government officials who have repeatedly made statements designed to undermine legitimate law enforcement efforts across our nation – it’s time to reexamine your own words and actions and take your share of responsibility,” the statement continued.

Mexican police wounded a pregnant US teenager when they opened fire on a vehicle that ignored orders to stop, authorities said Monday, in the latest episode of violence involving Mexico’s security forces.

Both the girl and the baby are out of danger, said prosecutors in the violence-plagued northeastern state of Tamaulipas, which borders the United States.

The girl and a friend were leaving a convenience store Sunday night near a bridge that links the Mexican border city of Reynosa and Pharr, Texas, when state police officers ordered their truck to stop.

Instead the driver sped away and police shot at the tires, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

When police reached the truck, the driver had disappeared and the girl was found with a stomach wound. The officers took her to a hospital.

A drive-by shooter went on a nighttime rampage near a Santa Barbara university campus that left seven people dead, including the attacker, and seven others wounded, authorities said Saturday.

The gunman got into two gun battles with deputies Friday night in the beachside community of Isla Vista before crashing his black BMW into a parked car, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said.

Deputies found him dead with a gunshot wound to the head, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether he was killed by gunfire or if he committed suicide, he said.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene near the University of California, Santa Barbara. Investigators know the gunman’s name, but Brown said he couldn’t release it pending notification of relatives.

“We’re analyzing both written and videotaped evidence that suggests that this atrocity was a premeditated mass murder,” Brown said.

Photo Credit: Facebook Santa Barbara Mass Shooting: Son of ‘Hunger Games’ Second Unit Director Is Suspected Gunman

By Erik Hayden.

A 22-year-old gunman killed six people in an Isla Vista rampage that began with a 140-page manifesto and an apartment stabbing and ended with a crashed BMW and an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“It all has to come to this,” Elliot Rodger stated during a nearly seven-minute “Retribution” video uploaded to YouTube on May 23. He later added: “After I’ve annihilated every single girl in the sorority house, I’ll take to the streets of Isla Vista and slay every single person I see there.”

Rodger, who died of a gunshot wound in the BMW, is the son of Hunger Games second unit director Peter Rodger. He had been a student who attended Santa Barbara City College classes sporadically since 2011.

The Santa Barbara sheriff’s office had made contact with Rodger three times prior to the mass shooting, including an April 30 incident where deputies followed up on a request from a family member who asked that police check on his welfare.

“The deputies contacted the suspect, at the time found him to be polite and courteous, he downplayed the concerns for his welfare and the deputies cleared the call,” stated Sheriff Bill Brown at a Saturday evening press conference carried live on local stations and cable broadcasters.

Officers draped towels over the balcony of a breezeway just outside the doors to the rooms of the motel to shield two of the bodies from people on nearby Ocean Boulevard.

“We’ve got detectives working on it around the clock,” Knipes said Sunday. “We don’t have any suspects in custody.”

Knipes would not say whether detectives have determined a motive for the shooting, but said it didn’t appear to be a random shooting.

A middle school student opened fire in his gym with a shotgun today and critically wounded two students in Roswell, N.M., according to authorities.

The injured were a 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy who were “simply sitting in their gym waiting to go to class,” New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said. The shooting occurred shortly before class was to begin at Berrendo Middle School.

The Eastern New Mexico Medical Center confirmed it treated two patients, who were then air lifted to the University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, located about 175 miles from the middle school.

A spokesperson for UMC said the boy, who the governor said was 12, is out of surgery and is listed in critical condition. The girl, 13, is also being treated at the hospital and is listed in serious condition, according to the spokesperson. A school staff member suffered a minor injury and declined treatment.

Killing anyone — let alone a teenager — was the last thing Elzie Pipkins wanted to do when she bought a handgun at a local pawn shop days after a December burglary. But a few weeks later, on Sunday evening, Pipkins found herself using that weapon to defend herself and her family — ultimately taking the life of a 16-year-old holding her at gunpoint.

“I looked him dead in his eyes, like I’m looking at you, and I said, ‘Please, please, please don’t hurt us,”’ said a tearful Elzie Pipkins as she recounted shooting Devon Antonio Young as he attempted to rob Pipkins in her home.

“I was defending myself, my grandbaby and my great-grandson. We’re innocent people and he came up on us in the house with a loaded shotgun,” she said.

The 63-year-old great-grandmother lives alone, but serves as the matriarch of a large family and often cares for the youngest members.

“I did what any parent or loved one would do and that’s try to protect her own,” said Pipkins, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren on Monday afternoon in the living room of her home in the 3000 block of Morningside Drive.
