New Numbers Highlight Just How Bad the Partisan Divide Is on Impeachment

Democrats’ desire to drive President Donald Trump from office is higher than it was to remove President Richard Nixon 45 years ago, according to a new poll that highlights the deep partisan divide over Democrats’ current impeachment attempt.

In an October poll of U.S. adults conducted by Gallup, 87 percent of Democrats surveyed said that — based on what is currently known — Donald Trump should be impeached and removed from office. This is compared to just 71 percent of Democrats who wanted to remove President Richard Nixon from office just days before his 1974 resignation.

The comparison also finds a much higher percentage of Republicans are now opposed to the removal of Donald Trump than were to Nixon’s: 92 percent of surveyed Republicans opposed Trump removal in October, versus 59 percent in 1974. . .

A Gallup article accompanying the recent survey results notes that the wide partisan divide in public opinion on removing Trump sets this impeachment episode apart from those of Nixon and former President Bill Clinton.

“Though Republicans did not favor removing Nixon from office, enough of them did that Republican members of Congress had more latitude to vote against the party majority on impeachment,” the article notes. “As far as Democrats are concerned, their steadfast opposition to Trump throughout his presidency suggests they are unlikely to revise their opinions as the impeachment process unfolds.” (For more from the author of “New Numbers Highlight Just How Bad the Partisan Divide Is on Impeachment” please click HERE)

Media Got Impeachment Probe Witness’s Opening Statement Before Lawmakers; Schumer Claims No One Knows Who Whistleblower Is

By Breitbart. A copy of a witness’s opening statement during the closed-door impeachment inquiry was given to the Washington Post before copies were provided to members of Congress and staffers engaged in the inquiry, a recently released transcript shows.

Witnesses’ opening statements have frequently been leaked to the media, allowing for their claims to reach the public uncontested before any other information from the closed-door testimonies.

A staffer for the Republican side pressed former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch during her October 11 closed-door deposition on how the Post may have gotten a copy of her opening statement, but her lawyers refused to let her answer.

During the deposition, Steve Castor, the staffer representing Republicans for the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, asked Yovanovitch for copies of her opening statement. (Read more from “Media Got Impeachment Probe Witness’s Opening Statement Before Lawmakers” HERE)

Schumer: No One Knows Who Whistleblower Is, ‘If You Do, You Should Let Me Know’

By Breitbart. During a press conference on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) denounced calls to publicize the identity of the whistleblower and stated that “no one knows who he is, or if you do, you should let me know.”

GOP Sent Moving Boxes to Democrats in Competitive Races After Impeachment Vote

There were some reports that House Democrats didn’t have the votes. The 25 or so Democrats who won in Trump districts know the polling. In battleground states, Trump’s impeachment isn’t popular. These folks didn’t win their 2018 races by massive margins. One bad move or vote could sink them, but those concerns were extinguished yesterday when House Democrats mustered 232 votes for this coup attempt—sorry, I mean impeachment push. Pelosi must’ve promised these members all the cover ad support they need, along with the pin number to the Democrats’ 2020 war chest. Still, that didn’t stop the National Republican Congressional Committee from sending moving boxes to these competitive districts represented by Democrats with a simple message: ‘Get packing’ (via USA Today):

The National Republican Congressional Committee sent packing boxes to several House Democrats who represent battleground states to signify they’ll need them as “moving boxes” next November, prompting Capitol Hill police to investigate them as suspicious packages.

The boxes were delivered outside the offices of Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), Jennifer Wexton (D-Va.), Conor Lamb (D-Pa.) and others to indicate they will not be in office much longer because of their participation into the impeachment investigation of President Donald Trump.

Ex-CIA Director “Grateful” for Deep State’s Role in Taking Down Trump; Pelosi Now Colluding to Change 2020 Results With Impeachment Probe

Steve Scalise: Pelosi Using Impeachment Probe to Influence 2020 Presidential Election

By Breitbart. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) told reporters Thursday that House Democrat leaders are using the partisan impeachment inquiry to help decide who will be the next president of the United States, suggesting the probe will interfere with the 2020 elections.

While briefing reporters in the wake of the House Democrat’s approval, along party lines, of the impeachment inquiry resolution, Scalise declared:

If you look at where we are at right now, we’re at an important point in history. Clearly, there are people that we serve with that don’t like the results of the 2016 election — that’s their prerogative — but the country next year will be deciding who our president is going to be. It should not be Nancy Pelosi and a small group of people that she selects that get to determine who’s going to be our president.

He went on to say that Democrats are not interested in getting to the bottom of the allegations that triggered the impeachment effort. Instead, their focus is solely on removing President Donald Trump from office and overturning the results of the 2016 elections, Scalise indicated. . .

They don’t really want to get to the truth. They want to remove a sitting president. In fact, the author of the articles of impeachment [Democrat Rep. Al Green from Texas] said, ‘if they don’t impeach the president, he will get re-elected.’ Now that’s not why we have impeachment.

Ex-Acting CIA Boss Expresses Gratitude for ‘Deep State’ Involvement in Impeachment Inquiry

By Fox News. Former Acting CIA Director John McLaughlin indicated on Wednesday that he was grateful for the “deep state’s” role in prompting the impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

CBS reporter Margaret Brennan had noted to McLaughlin that the origin of the impeachment inquiry likely furthered Trump’s concerns about the “deep state”.

“There is something unique you have to agree that now that the impeachment inquiry is underway, sparked by a complaint from someone within the intelligence community, it feeds the president’s concern, an often-used term about a ‘deep state’ being there to take him out,” she said.

“Well, you know, thank God for the ‘deep state’,” McLaughlin responded, provoking laughter and applause. (Read more from “Ex-Acting CIA Boss Expresses Gratitude for ‘Deep State’ Involvement in Impeachment Inquiry” HERE)

Why Two Democrats Say They Voted Against the Impeachment Resolution

Some Democrats in the House represent districts that voted for President Trump in 2016. Two of those Democrats joined with House Republicans on Thursday in bipartisan opposition against the impeachment resolution. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ) and Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN) chose to put their constituents above their party’s abject hatred of the president.

In a statement about the House vote on Thursday, Rep. Collin Peterson called the impeachment a “mistake,” saying he would “not make a decision on impeachment until all the facts have been presented.”

This impeachment process continues to be hopelessly partisan. I have been hearing from my constituents on both sides of this matter for months, and the escalation of calls this past week just shows me how divided our country really is right now. I have some serious concerns with the way the closed-door depositions were run, and am skeptical that we will have a process that is open, transparent and fair. Without support from Senate Republicans, going down this path is a mistake. Today’s vote is both unnecessary, and widely misrepresented in the media and by Republicans as a vote on impeachment. I will not make a decision on impeachment until all the facts have been presented.”

New Poll Has Bad News for the Impeachment Inquiry

As Democrats ramp up their efforts in the impeachment inquiry, a new poll shows that although most Americans believe the president did something wrong on a controversial Ukraine call, far fewer believe he should be impeached.

Whether President Donald Trump asked for a “quid pro quo” during a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is the central impetus behind the impeachment inquiry by House Democrats. The president and his allies have denied any wrongdoing.

According to the poll, 59 percent of respondents said that what the president did on the phone call was wrong.

But of those, only 38 percent said it was an impeachable offense.

Another 21 percent said that the president’s actions were wrong, but not worth impeachment. (Read more from “New Poll Has Bad News for the Impeachment Inquiry” HERE)

Former Bush Press Secretary Suggests Why Pelosi Is Holding An Impeachment Vote

Maybe deep down House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wanted this, but she also knew the political ramifications. It would be an earthquake, and one in which Democrats could have reaped total destruction. It would galvanize the Trump base and give the president all the ammunition he needed to rip apart the Democratic Party for what is arguably one of the most explicitly partisan witch hunts in recent memory. The impeachment proceedings of President Trump are not yet official, but as Cortney wrote yesterday, a Thursday vote is going to be held. Former Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer was on Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier” where he suggested that Pelosi is doing a retroactive makeup with this vote. Why? Well, the optics can’t be polished, especially on something as serious as impeachment (via RCP):

ARI FLEISCHER: Fairness is a fundamental American value, and this should not come down to a vote or not a vote. It should always be marked by fairness. If they have a vote now, you can not make up for the lack of fairness for the last month where we’ve had a secret impeachment process, with secret witnesses and secret transcripts all started by a secret whistle-blower. That is not how we conduct things to be fair to anybody in this country. So I think this is a little bit of retroactive makeup by Speaker Pelosi who recognized that they do have a problem. And it’s not a process problem. Fairness is a fundamental American virtue.

Make no mistake; Pelosi wants Trump gone, but maybe not in this way. This shift could signal that she knows the ground is not stable for Democrats; polls show swing state voters are not enthralled with this circus up on the Hill. With a large chunk of the House Democratic caucus hailing from the Left Coast and the liberal cesspool that is the Northeast, it shouldn’t be a shock that these clowns were fantasizing about impeachment from day one of the Trump presidency, which was buoyed by a rabid and unhinged progressive base that inhabits these lands. Pelosi Announces Vote on Impeachment Inquiry

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday the House will vote this week on a resolution to formalize — and establish the parameters — of the Trump impeachment inquiry.

In a letter sent to Democratic House lawmakers, Pelosi, D-Calif., said the resolution “affirms the ongoing, existing investigation” and “establishes the procedure” for future investigative steps.

“We are taking this step to eliminate any doubt as to whether the Trump administration may withhold documents, prevent witness testimony, disregard duly authorized subpoenas, or continue obstructing the House of Representatives,” Pelosi said. . .

Republicans hit back Monday at Pelosi over the planned vote, with South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham — the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which would play a role in a Senate impeachment trial — saying, “A vote now is a bit like un-ringing a bell as House Democrats have selectively leaked information in order to damage President Trump for weeks.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told Fox News: “What it authorizes is that we were right. You can’t go back now.” (Read more from “Pelosi Announces Vote on Impeachment Inquiry” HERE)

What Are They Hiding? Top Republicans DEMAND Secret Dem Impeachment Docs

The House Judiciary Committee’s top Republican member is demanding that top Democrats allow him see investigation information that has been kept secret from other members of Congress and the American people.

In a trio of Friday afternoon letters to the Democratic chairs of the three committees conducting the House’s impeachment investigation — Intelligence, Oversight, and Foreign Affairs — House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Doug Collings, R-Ga., said that he intends to use a House rule to get access to impeachment materials that have thus far only been made available to members of those panels.

“I write to inform you of my intent to exercise my right under House Rule XI, Clause 2(e)(2)(A) to review documents and records in possession of [your committee] so that you may prepare accordingly,” the letters explain. “Please make available all records, documents, transcripts, and other materials related to or obtained in the course of the ongoing joint investigation between the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Committee on Oversight and Reform.”

According to the House rule Collins cites, “all committee records … shall be the property of the House, and each Member, Delegate, and the Resident Commissioner shall have access thereto.”

The secrecy of the three committees’ investigation has drawn an immense amount of criticism from GOP lawmakers this week.

On Monday, Judiciary Committee member Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., was kicked out of an impeachment deposition because he wasn’t a member of one of the three panels doing the investigation.

“To exclude Members of Congress from hearings confirms the American people’s suspicions: This is not a legitimate ‘impeachment inquiry’ — it is a charade,” Gaetz told Blaze Media in a statement. “Blocking Members of Congress from attending ‘impeachment’ hearings is not only unfair, it runs counter to our Democracy. The perpetrators of this impeachment hoax must be held accountable — both by the Congress, and by the American people.”

On Wednesday, Judiciary Committee member Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, said on the House Floor that he tried to get access to investigation materials but was also turned away.

“Who gave that order?” Gohmert asked. “Because until a vote is held on the rules … [impeachment] goes through the Judiciary Committee.”

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., has defended the secretive nature of the investigation, saying that congressional investigators are acting similarly to a grand jury.

In an effort to force transparency to the impeachment proceedings, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., and House Rules Committee Ranking Member Tom Cole, R-Okla., introduced legislation Friday afternoon that would allow all members of Congress to view investigation materials, regardless of their committee assignments.

“Chairman Schiff wants to impeach President Trump behind closed doors and clearly has no intention of conducting a fair and open process,” Scalise said in a statement announcing the resolution. “We demand transparency. For the sake of our republic, Members of Congress must have access to proceedings with such monumental and dangerous consequences.” (Read more from “What Are They Hiding? Analysis: Poll Showing ‘Record Support’ for Trump Impeachment Was Rigged

. . .The survey found that 51 percent of voters want Trump impeached and removed from office, while just 40 percent of voters do not want the president impeached. The poll showed a significant jump in those who want Trump’s impeachment from July. At the time, just 42 percent of voters said they want Trump impeached.

However, according to an analysis by the New York Post, the polling firm that conducted the survey — Braun Research — underrepresented Republicans and Independents, therefore skewing the poll’s results.

A more accurate voter representation would have resulted in nearly identical results for pro-impeachment and anti-impeachment support, the Post found[:]

Princeton, New Jersey, pollster Braun Research, which conducted the survey, noted 48% of its respondents were Democrats. But the actual breakdown of party-affiliation is 31% Democrat, 29% Republican and 38% independent, according to Gallup.

A poll weighted for party affiliation would have concluded that 44.9% favored impeachment and 44.4% opposed it, a Post analysis has concluded.
